I really love how awesome of a team you’ve both become. As a man, becoming closer to my step father, I enjoy the work we do together. It’s calming and rewarding, and in the end, we look forward to a nice dinner with a beer.
Thank you for not only explaining the historical perspective of why installers didn't wrap and weatherproof the exterior around the door but also how to properly install an exterior door! I'be benefitted greatly from your videos,, and I greatly appreciate you. You are a God send! God bless you and yours, and I hope you are enjoying great success!
Jeff, sorry to be the master of the obvious, I do love your videos. Rough frame in dimensions and actual door dimensions usually leave you with a far more space than you had here. You spent the first 14 minutes of this install dealing with having too tight of a rough frame in. If your framer is a Ninja Level 10 type then you can get away with a tighter opening. Typically the side rough opening is approx. 2" wider and the top rough is 1" taller. The shims and the level are your time saving friend-- and over-sandwich your shims and compress them with your installation screws. Thanks again Jeff!
"Over-sandwich your shims" Were you even watching or listening to what he said? That's EXACTLY what he did! I watch these vids on YT and see so many people making inane comments about things that were already covered in the video. He also said about the opening being typically 2" wider!!
Former freight worker at Home Depot, those strapping and screws are from shipping. Most of the name-brand companies ship those doors standing up on two connected pallets. They ship 6-8 doors and strap each one to eachother.
I was once helping my dad install an interior door. He was planning on teaching me how to do all the shimming stuff, but by some kind of miracle, it installed without needing any kind of shimming or leveling, or anything. It came out absolutely perfectly. And I attribute this to the door and the jamb, and the walls all being equal amounts of uneven and unlevel in just the right places.
Ur son is very lucky to have u I wish I had some one to teach me to do what ur doing I grew up with a single mom and my dad well they split when I was 5 went the wrong way in life but now I'm back on track a father of 5 beautiful girls I just want to thank u becuz now I can show my lil girls how to build I appreciate u god bless ..
Hey, Jeff. That strapping that you had to remove from the door frame is meant to hold the doors together on a pallet. They'll ship them 5 or 6 on a pallet and have that strapping for support during shipping. Store should be removing that when they load in on a sales floor so you don't have to.
Watching Jeff paint is always is fascinating. He is so good ! He does all the little cutting strokes and feathering with ease. Every time I watch him I learn something new. Today's lesson is the one I struggle with most when painting - PATIENCE. Thanks Jeff and keep up the good work! Your lesson have saved me thousands to date.
When painting doors, it is important to not let the paint dry on you. I did not see the final product in the sun to see if his brush edges showed up. Generally, when I paint the door, I brush the edges of the top four panels but roll out the centers right away, and I don't go onto the main area until the centers are done with the small roller. Then roll the main area working down starting with the top half then to the bottom half, always trying to keep the edges wet until the area is done. In the video, I could not tell the air temperature, or moisture level either. That also can either give you more time, or dry the paint quicker, like in 80 degree weather.
Thank you sir!!! I couldn't make my door close from the bottom and I finally made it happen with some of your tips.. FYI It was my first time installing one 😅 God Bless You!!
As always love your work Jeff. Your kids are so lucky to have their old man with so much knowledge, patience and so importantly, humour! Thanks for sharing this and thanks to your kids. Merry Xmas and an awesome new year matey!! You will have a cracking 2024!! Mike-Barcelona
As you started painting the door and talking. I thought that maybe you were channeling your inner Bob Rose. Love watching your knowledge in action it inspires me to build and repair around my house and property. Thank you
6:50 That's a #3 Phillips bit. And the reason they're there, is because the HD received multiple doors on a pallet. These doors are screwed with nylon straps to prevent their movement during shipping. Store associates are supposed to remove them when they stock them, however, sometimes people get lazy and only remove the screws on one side (the side facing the store aisle). lol
As a tip for painting a door, take a wedge and wedge the bottom on the latch plate face and toss some cardboard under the length. It’ll steady the door, allow you to roll all sides without having to swing it. Toss some painters tape on the hinges and then knife the outline then just paint right over it.
Just passing thru wanting to learn . For years husband, who is so talented built 1 1/2 houses lol for real tho, before me, married 31 yrs…..ANYWAYSfor years he could lift nothing heavier than gallon of milk. So I learned to do things just to make function. Cause I worked 12 to 14 hrs. Got some big ole handsome grandsons . Sons in love too. I some good work done till no extra moolah just for minute. I love doin the little I’ve done. I certainly not woman’s lib I do have a very talented fella that is willing and will help once ship arrives. I learned alot from door thing door only 3 yrs old and has settled with gaps of air this year. So thank you! I’m also totally realize need to get you pros I’m thinking need to call new roof guy (3years ago). Window in same room falling from top, calling in troops after Christmas!! Merry Christmas 🎄 can’t officially join yet. Thanks for letting me stroll through 😊
Thank you soo much for this video. I'm about to "attempt" to install my first ever door... No experience with any of this... But the massive amounts of reading and vids have helped... I'm so glad I came across this video specifically as I was confused about the flashing tape stuff... I'm glad you took the time and demonstrated how to use it, considering how expensive the stuff is and me questioning is it really necessary since everything will be either caulked or spray foamed, etc.... But after a bit of reading then seeing you actually applying and explaining, thank you so much. Feel a bit more confident with tackling this project. Still nervous beyond words though with screwing everything in and using shims. I'm just stuck on the whole brickmould thing as there's so many and it's quite overwhelming tbh.
Love the work gents! I would recommend reading the door warranty card first. I found out that all of the jam had to be primed and painted or else the manufacturer wouldn't warranty anything on the door. Of course I found this out after the door was installed and siding put back on. End before the beginning everyone.
As someone who works in home improvement retail, that's just the store being lazy and not removing the shipping strapping. They typically come upright on pallets of 5 to 6 doors and that strap stops them from shifting.
I followed your video yesterday to install a door. I fought with it for almost 2 hours. It wouldn't lay flat, it wasn't sitting square. Nothing was right. I pulled it out and I found 2 little black plastic pieces stapled to the bottom of the door. it was packing material. Ugghhh. Once I removed those, the door was up in about 10 minutes flat!
When HGTV comes knocking on your door! It will be due to this. This, in my opinion is what crafting is about. Being able to adapt is key to getting the job done. Well done.
Nice work. One suggestion; with such an utter flimsy factory door frame as I saw in the video, I would, before constructing any walls, have pre-made a strong, square and snug fitting door frame from beams around it on a workbench. Install that in place, and then build the walls left and right of it. This way once the walls are finished you have a really strong entrance, and that factory door including its flimsy doorframe will fit perfectly, without gaps .
Nice job Jeff and son! I hate doors and they hate me. I get extremely frustrated installing them especially if I'm working with an existing opening that is all out of wack and mending in existing siding.
Have you checked that whiskey stick lately to make sure it reads true? Carpenters assume they are always accurate if there is no damage, which is incorrect. Craftsman used to,have a paper insert taped to every one with directions on how to check them for accuracy. I've actuality had to go through 2 or 3 before I could find a good one.
Having learned from my grandfather, who built a lot of North Vancouver from the late 1930s through the 1960s, I was taught to kick the hinge side of the jamb outwards just a degree or two, to prevent the door from binding with the jam when it closes. Is this an outdated concept, or still an acceptable practice? I'm guessing it compensates for seasonal movement of solid wood, which most doors are not made of anymore. Cheers!
Yeah, those annoying random screws and banding straps on the sides of the jambs at 7:00 were to keep the shipping pallet of doors upright to prevent them from toppling over individually. Great vids!
I'm curious if you have tried over sizing the framing then shimming it. That's how the framers did it at my house. It seems easier than trying to square the framing. but maybe less sturdy?
Way off topic….but you’ve helped me a lot by giving me the knowledge to DIY my basement. Could you do a video on how to frame an arch? For like a hallway or the opening of a walk in closet?
He's done a video like that and shows how to drywall it after. Just search "home renovision arch" It should be the first video that pops up. It is for me when I search it.
The reason that your wall is leaning in near the door is because you cut that 1/2 inch off the 2x4 that you put on the top. From the edge of the front top plate to the edge of the back top plate, that is the exact width of your deck. Your deck was 10 feet. Which is what you started with on the 2x4 that you put across it. When you cut it down by 1/2 inch, you made it narrower at the top, than it was at the bottom. That caused the top to lean in. I wondered if that cutting off of the 1/2 inch was going to come back to bite you, and I see it did.
I have a question I got a steel pre hung out swing door left handed do the henge go on the outside or inside I appreciate it if you could clarify thanks
I have always found it beneficial to pick up a couple extra packets of chop sticks when you order Chinese food. It's not that hard to open up one henge and glue in some chip sticks to take the slack up from worn out henge holes.
Usually, you'd go flush with the drywall on the inside (0.5" past the frame, not flush with the frame). That's why it is 4.5" wide, it accounts for 0.5" outisde sheeting and 0.5" inside drywall, so the trim could stay level over the door frame and the sheeting.
Always a pleasure watching you teach , Matt or the rest of us the quirky little in's and do's to get some things square, flush. 🥶🖤🔔👍🏻💓. Merry Holy-days 12/23/23
Hi Jeff. A quick question. Which, in your opinion, is better finnish for hard wearing paint to use on exterior front door? Satin, matt or gloss please? Colour black. Excellent job on your shed, by the way. Awesome. Cheers.👍. Happy Xmas and a great 2024 to you and your family. Thank you for a great 2023. 👌
do you have to use foam to seal up the spaces where you put the shims? and where does the caulking go? great video, with some missing pieces for those of us totally new :)
Use 3.5X 3.5 pieces of ply the appropriate thickness ply scraps off job site or invest ! Carry in a bucket ! Never shim behind hinges the shim moves by design of the weight bearing hinges ! I cut my own 8” shims out of cedar I buy or get scrap! Make a shim jig ! This way is great waterproofing however door will move over short time !
The amount of people hating on a dad just trying to build something with his kid, WHILE teaching good skills is crazy! If ya’ll don’t like what He’s sharing, don’t watch!
This is exactly what I’m about to do in my garage (right down to painting it black). I was thinking of spray painting to get a really smooth finish using Krylon Fusion. Any opinions on using spray paint?
the strap is so you can pull it around by yourself? and the screws for self depth install? I always take them all off. having just installed a dozen doors in my new home, 2 exterior I am now fully versed in door installation and cursed a lot at crooked framing and uneven floors.
Question? What about expanding and contracting of wood..? I didn’t hear you talk about this point. I make clean space, when I install a door but summer months it gets tight..
I learned from a professional finish carpenter and thee best in the business Gary Katz ! Watch his videos and learn to hang a door ! There is an order of setting screws and you do put screw in the top ! Don’t listened to me watch his video! This way is the old school when the carpenter on the job did everything and fast ! He just slowed down the fast ! In a year maybe two that door will fall into the jam near the top ! I know I fix the all the time ! Old school does not mean old carpenter I am 65 and learn from the newer pros all the time !
Hey brother, I have a beam going across my ceiling in my 2. 1/2 car garage, can I attach a door to that. If you need pictures, I can send them to you. Thanks Roger
When the doors arrive they are standing on a pallet, usually 5 doors or so. That piece of plastic screwed to the frame once ran across 5 doors holding them on the pallet. it's faster to cut the plastic than remove the screws. You can design a $4000 door and it may show up with and aluminum threshold and pallet grade lumber under the aluminum. I always wanted my R/O 2 1/2" bigger than frame size and always recommended NOT having the door stained or finished in any manner. With the added expense your painter can do it and I won't have to order another door that will take 2 months to arrive and be damaged again in shipping. Sad but true. I designed custom doors , windows and moldings/millwork for 16 years. Trust me, customers are as reasonable as employees, even the "pros." I refused to work with many customers and never got in trouble DIYers and even many pros do not know what goes into designing doors and windows and the framing aspect. I only worked with 2 or 3 people my entire time because so many people couldn't wrap their heads around designing. My favorite was when a customer would come in to get a window. "I need a window." "What size?" "standard." Sometimes to be make a point I would flop the Andersen catalog 6" thick and tell them to show me their standard window out of 100,000 standard windows...😁 I'm curious why no sealer under the threshold? 3 lines, not a big s?
They were fabricating window and door pans from copper and tin for over 100 years and some quality builders still do no water going into the building that's a no no

zip tape has a true stretchy version, no roofing nails.

The screws and the plastic band on the side are for shipping doors stacked up rite cut when displayed in store.

I'm curious if you have tried over sizing the framing then shimming it. That's how the framers did it at my house. It seems easier than trying to square the framing. but maybe less sturdy?
Obviously, you didn't bother listening when he said that the rough opening is usually 2" wider.

Just search "home renovision arch"
It should be the first video that pops up. It is for me when I search it.
How to live with it not being perfect?? "...knowing that most doors aren't perfect. "😂 Nice one!
Why is there house wrap and no OSB behind it Jeff? Wont the addition of 7/16 OSB make the J trim to tight behind your door pvc casing?

This is exactly what I’m about to do in my garage (right down to painting it black). I was thinking of spray painting to get a really smooth finish using Krylon Fusion. Any opinions on using spray paint?
The screws in the non hinge side keeps the door from flying open during loading and transport.

Hi Jeff what door would you recommend for my garage side entry door I should get? Fiberglass?
Great shed Jeff 💪🏽
What shoes are those you are wearing?
Can I use plastic shims to eliminate the shim compression factor (vs. wood shims)?
How would composite shims work here?
I live in Ontario Niagara region, do I need to get a permit first to build this same size 10x16 shed? Thanks for the info.
How do you level with the universe?
I would have added some steel plates in the door jam to prevent someone from breaking in.

It also requires two people to install an ouside door eficiently..
USA min 6” up the legs of the door with flashing. Minimum.
You should have checked plumb with the wood clamp on before you started screwing.
Why have you not installed headers over the windows? It’s a load bearing wall.
Thought we wouldn't hear that fart at 20:20... but we did.
Matt never did this..........and i can see the look on his face thinking.......ok, i never did that. 😏👍
Injury from a shim?
At 31:00 that really made a mess of the top piece of frame.
What does the tattered flag with a cub paw symbolize? Matt
It’s just a shed anyway nice one 😂
Please use a paint kettle to decant a small amount rather than hugging a can. 😊
They come with the plastic straps to hold them in place during shipping, they should have been removed from the store when you purchased them.
Alright
Why not have the door swing out? It would give you more space in there.
So you can open it even after a dump of snow.
Because then somebody can just pop the hinges off or break in with a flat head screwdriver
So that it can rot in place as water dirt and snow accumulates in the recess and gets inside with you as you open the door inwards.
@@vschneider3389 But it's a shed you're not sleeping in there.
@@joseph7105 That would be more work than kicking in the door or breaking a window. Heck, without sheathing you could just poke your way in.
"It's still the same thickness, but it's a thinner thickness"...
Hmmm...Must be a Canadian thing...
Is this a re post? Sure ive seen it before. Also, its check for plumb, not level
They were fabricating window and door pans from copper and tin for over 100 years and some quality builders still do no water going into the building that's a no no
