That’s what Alex Carleton, Chief Creative Officer at Filson, says in the latest episode of the Popular Mechanics series “MADE HERE.” The outdoor clothing and gear manufacturer’s customers have testified how Filson gear helped them survive the elements after disasters like plane crashes left them exposed to freezing temperatures.

I used to swear by Filson I own a tons of their stuff going back 30 years or so. I am sad at how out of touch and down hill the company has gone in the last several years. Their management are clueless and don’t care about who they used to market to. They want to charge exorbitant prices totally out of line with the peer industry while manufacturing overseas. All while eliminating selections that were staples 5 years ago. For example their mackinaw Jac shirt was $150 5 years ago now $350! But you can only get it in blue and they totally changed their sizing. It’s like they want to offend away their core demographic and pretend to cater to the Seattle hipster crowd that can’t afford their product anyways. What a stupid marketing move.

They were bought by the same Hedge Fund "guru" that started Fossil Watches and now owns Shinola Detroit (watches) along with Filson. They do the same crap with that brand. Sell it for a huge markup and the quality is horrible compared to what it used to be. It is my opinion that Carhartt is making the same mistakes and catering to the wrong crowd.

Filson was at one point my favourite company. Now the prices have just been outrageous especially since 90 percent of products are made over seas. I think this company needs a complete overhaul. Quality over quantity. Only products made in the USA and Canada. People tend to notice the dip in quality, that’s most likely why people don’t want to spend the money. Sad
Some stuff is made in the USA, but the stuff made overseas is still priced as if it was made in the USA. It's awful, I agree.
Sure.. most people won’t pay for quality. Understand that if a company wants to be more than a boutique store, they need a wider range of products. Any of their products are made over seas but their best is still made in the us. And it is priced accordingly.
It's becoming the new Carharrt and patagonia in terms of branding. They look to the mainstream/street wear fashion direction. 😞

I am actually new to the Filson brand and a new customer. I love that the high end garments remains built in USA. And the non usa are still nice too. But I would like to inform your ownership I would pay $500 for a usa made Tin Cloth short lined cruiser. Vs 350 for imported. This is how smaller co like Dehen are coming up so fast.
It’s to bad that a majority of it is made outside of the United States.I’ll refrain from buying new because of this issue.I’ll only buy used and some of which is in really good condition and I always look at the tag.
Sorry Filson but these items should be made here in the states with USA made materials if you’re going to charge those prices.

I’ll always loved Filson. I’m a teenager and I would save up some money to buy an item from them, but every time I go in to find something, everything is made overseas, and I just can’t bring myself to spend that kind of money, especially since it’s usually all the money I have ahah.
This sort of passion and ethics is what brought me into design. Things like this make me so proud of what people can achieve when they just stop and think about things properly.
I have always loved me Filson gear!! Just bought a new short lined cruiser and noticed some little Asian slave probably made it for a bowl of rice. I hope someone with pride for America buys this company moves it out of Seattle and brings it back to what it once was!
Great video - unfortunately Americans are losing faith in Filson - mostly because you've decided to embrace profit over quality, with ever-increasing prices, and yet you outsource a growing number of your products to overseas manufacturers. You then simply stamp the Filson brand on it. Not sure Filson will survive another 10 years.

I agree filson WAS the best until products were out sourced over seas not all but some...I’ve used them since a kid for hunting and in the outdoors and still do.... my older filson is excellent.... will they be around for another century? Maybe but doubtful... maybe if it falls out of style and prices come back down to earth and it gets back to its roots so the average person can afford it then probably so but on the current path the will not there is too many good or better alternatives for half the price.. they’ve exploited the name too much
It's a menswear brand now. I wish they would just call it that.
Seems like all these companies represent as a robot. I miss the industry owners and representatives that were real people. Not afraid to offend. Real people. Non Scripted. There are still a few and I can’t help but spend my money with them.

I just bought the limited edition mackinaw Cape coat. Beautiful coat. But up here in Canada with exchange and taxes I paid just over 1000k for it.
haha same here! left a bad taste in my mouth when i had to pay $250 duty and tax. maybe it’d be better if there were more retailers in Canada
@@wittowninja Hey Devin, I bought mine at the Filson shop at 47 Water street in Gas town Vancouver BC. Was also looking at the weather wool all around coat, and you better be sitting down when you see there prices. But they say when comparing the two companies clothing products it's kind of like comparing a Cadillac to a Bentley. I might have to start saving my loonies and toonies again, who says you can't have both. I'm looking at my Cape coat right now and it is a beautiful coat, l can't find the slightest flaw in the stitching or wool material anywhere.
So isn't 1000k actually a million? Why did you pay that? Or is it a lie?

Filson now is where Eddie Bauer was in 1990: half their line made in the US/half in Asia. Eventually 100% of Filson will be cheap Asian import and they'll go bankrupt like Eddie Bauer.

You had the 1st part right was because everything that I've been shopping for is made in other countries like India Sri Lanka Indonesia I would pay for American made at least somebody's getting good wages Slave labour in other countries
HOW FILSON PRODUCTS ARE MADE NOW: Mostly oversea's. Dispicable company and practices now. NOT MADE IN THE UNITED STATES ANYMORE. and FILSON IS POCKETTING THE MONEY THEY SAVED and not passing the savings on to the consumer. Horrible.

Exquisite product, high quality and simple classic designs. I love this company and its products. My original briefcase is 4 years old but looks just slightly faded (and I use it a lot in my commute to work, under the tropical sun, wind, and rain of Vietnam.) Filson leather conditioner is exquisite as well. Love them!

I own a few Filson bits that are still made in the USA, however, all the employees seemed to be Asian anyway so it seems they have just brought in the skilled work from overseas and probably pay them less than an American would work for but charge extreme prices for their items. A shame tbh
Seattle has a huge Asian community, most likely they’re Asian Americans. Chances are that they are willing to work for lower wages but are also just willing to work.

I wouldnt say they are paid less, but these ladies are most probably masters at their craft. The best seamtress in my neighbourhood are asians, most of them grew up in that trade as most fabric production in the last 20 years are made in Asia. but most people see "Made in USA" as " Made by white people", when they see an asian lady on the factory floor, they think it was shot in China. Quality is quality, regardless of skin color, ethnicity or nation.
Ignorance is Bliss, Seattle has a huge Asian population and a lot of them are tailors.

I don't understand the "China" comments. You can literally go to their site and see all the products made in North America. Sure, there are items like T-shirts and flannels that are made overseas, but the actual items outdoorsman would truly appreciate (blankets, twill/wool/leather products, tools/knives, etc.) are still made here - YOU CAN'T EVEN SOURCE PRODUCTS LIKE MACKINAW WOOL OUTSIDE OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ya goons.
I'm no shill, if I'm paying top price for products, I expect the best, and I expect it to be made in the US/CA. Filson is one of the last outfitters still doing most of their products in the US. The comments below are part of the reason companies like this can't even exist...'cAuSe cHiNa'.
Filson had a phenomenal add campaign years ago,"Stubbornly made in the USA." short of their flannels everything on their catalogue was dang near made in USA or at least a collaboration with some big clothing brand. The add campaign was a huge success and brought in a lot of new buyers.(myself included) The price was heavy but the products amazing. They did these amazing small production runs of one off styles and collaboration pieces that made getting a Filson catalogue so exciting. Filson today has abandoned that amazing campaign shifted almost the whole production line overseas and its rare for cool one off production runs.They also have begun the move to high fashion doubling or tripling prices on the now imported goods. I remember when Craftsman swore that the core product line would always be made in the USA. Filson is another faceless corporation like Craftsman and a lot of us Filson fans called it when shelter cloth and tin cloth production was announced to be moved completly overseas.(Filson customer service calling it re sourcing) Filson also has been for awhile now making some of the mackinaw wool labeled items overseas.
The brand is blessed with an amazing small core fanbase. Something quite rare for a clothing brand. Corporations don't care about that loyalty only bottom lines. With Bedrock who owns Filson hinting at going public it makes since they want to inflate profit margins to impress future share holders. Is Bedrock burning its Filson house down for some quick warmth or they cash in at the right time is to be found out.

I just got a filson Short line tin cloth cruiser. Made in Bangladesh quality not so great buttons are hard to close and open some buttonhole slots are bigger than others they should focus a little bit more on quality and make it in the USA just like this video says but they make a couple in the USA just to be able to claim it the majority of their stuff is made overseas they need to redo their whole company and rethink everything and take the masks off please especially when you're making a video

In the above video all the factory workers are Asian, I'm assuming that the factory is not in the USA. I'd love to own a Filson jacket but won't pay American labor prices for products made in Asia or Bangladesh at a fraction the labor cost. Bring back American made!

I'm about to purchase an expensive filson garmet, my 1st of there's. Been interested in the brand for years. I hope the newer ownership doesn't ruin the brand and make hipster, goofy, woke crowd clothes. Have you looked at Woolrich lately. Wow. Destroyed brand now.
