  • Hi darlings! In today's video, I'll be covering a highly request topic, and that is OIL PAINTING SURFACES! I'll be going over the different types of surfaces, their pros and cons, my experiences with each, and most importantly, their price points. The surfaces I will chat about today include: canvas, wood, hardboard/gessobord, and vellum.

    as someone who has taken a formal oil painting class, i can say that canvas is my favorite surface to work with BUT IT TAKES SOOOOOO MUCH TIME TO PREPARE IF YOURE DOING IT YOURSELF. Ive only ever prepared my surfaces by myself with my mentor, but its soo worth it. Learning to prepare your own canvas is such a good experience so if anyone has the chance to try it DO IT. Wood panels are the best if you cant get good canvas or have the time to prepare your own. Ive also gessoed my own but with a custom gesso my mentor taught my class how to make. You could also use paper, but wood and canvas just feel so much nicer for some reason? I seriously reccomend prepareing your own surfaces atleast once in your life if youre into oil painting, cause it makes you feel really involved in the process.

    You can also get a sheet of wood from home depot or something and have them cut it down to size and prep it yourself. Good for practice and it’s a pretty cheap option too!

    • @HappyDArtist
      @HappyDArtist  6 років тому +2

      Yes that is an option as well! Though they don't always cut the pieces in perfect sizes, so you might have a hard time fitting them into premade frames, but it is definitely a more affordable alternative :) Prepping it yourself takes extra time, but sometimes can be really fun to get your hands dirty hehe

      Happy D. Artist hehe I agree. Sometimes getting your hands dirty connects you to the process a bit more

      Happy D. Artist yes! They don't cut them into perfect sizes I learned this the hard way! The guy cutting my wood was too busy flirting w/ his coworker 😂🤦🏾‍♀️ but I prefer doing it this way still. So much cheaper and I can control how smooth I want my surface

    I recently found your channel and have watched nearly every video on your playlist. I especially enjoyed this one video where you spoke specifically to the older artist. You have given me so much inspiration and have removed a lot of self-doubts I had. I have a long way to go but I'm more okay with it now than I was before. You are an amazing person and I thank you so much for all your videos and all your advice. I love how you make sure you connect with your viewers on a personal level like we are more than just your subs. It's so refreshing. Only one thing would request from you is if you could feature more Black/African American portraits. We love fantasy art too, lol. Hope that doesn't come out the wrong way or seen as negative because it definitely wasn't meant to be. I have seen two pieces where you painted them Black and they were absolutely breathtaking. I ordered Gamblin 1980 (lol funny cuz it's the year I was born) to start my oil painting journey. Can't wait to tag you on Insta. I'm hoping to also support you on Patreon later this month as you have quickly become one of my favorite artists. Sorry for the long comment but I didn't want to praise you on an older video in case you wouldn't get to read it. Hope you see this and take care of yourself :) Much love from The Bronx, NY

    If you want to paint on canvas, you can also use canvas boards. It's similar to the gesso boards Happy uses, just that it's canvas attached to a really stable flat cardboard underground. Also it's cheaper than canvases with wood panels and since it's flat you don't have to worry about how tightly it's stretched :)

    if you put water on the back of the canvas and let it dry it will tighten the canvas

    Wow I never knew you could buy wood panels for painting!! That's so cool! I wonder if they're cheaper than traditional canvas. I remember painting on a wooden board when I was younger and I loved how it felt! I never knew you could buy archival wooden panels though. I'll definitely have to look for some onlile! :D

      - Shooting Starlight - They usually are cheaper than canvas, however you have to prime them yourself, and primer can be quite pricey.

    • @DarkisArt
      @DarkisArt 6 років тому

      - Shooting Starlight - yes, you should be able to buy it at your local art store. Here in the U.S. I’ve visited several different stores and they always seem to have them. But they are tucked away so sometimes you do have to ask where they are.

      Any wood flat surface is great, as long as you sand it to preference and gesso it.
      I go usually with clear gesso to have wood design on the surface

    Been getting into ACM panels. Granted I paid $60 for a 4'×8' sheet at local Plastics supplier(Peidmont Plastics) but I was Ble to get 8 8×10" panels, 2 20×24, and 4 12×15, and 7 16×20 panels from ONE SHEET. and apparently it is the most archival surface

    Thanks for all the tips and all the love ❤ You're so sweet teaching all you've learned.
    Do you have any tips on, keeping your canvasses and wood boards from bending and warping? I made one painting on woodboard, but after half a year it's all bended now. Not sellable at all 🤔

  • @AllisonLyonArt

    Love this video! Wood and hardboard are my favorites. Cradled wood panels more so because I don't have to worry about framing the pieces. I use Blick's premier wood panels which are more affordable than Trekell, but you do have to prime the wood panels yourself :)

    The cheap canvas is not stretched as tight because you have not put the tension pieces that come with them in the corners of the frame (where the slots are)

    There's also something called "carton entoilé" idk the English name but it's basically a card board with like the cotton part of the canvas put on it, it's pretty cheap I got like five for less than 10€, now I don't know if they work well because I was supposed to get into oil with them but I never did lmao but it was a known brand so I guess they must be correct ?

    I know it's a filler video.. 😅when you are actually working on another piece of yours.. but its sure helps a lot of beginner artist. So Thank you for always be that informative 💙 !!

    • @HappyDArtist
      @HappyDArtist  6 років тому +13

      Haha glad you found it helpful! But I just wanted to clarify that to me, there is no such thing as filler videos! :) Each video I make serves a unique purpose (timelapses vs vlogs vs tutorials vs advice storytimes), and I try to make the content valuable to the viewer. This one took HOURS to film and even longer to edit, not to mention the prep work that went into researching the materials and outlining the talking points. I know its not a painting or drawing timelapse, and that not as many people would find it "entertaining", but it was still a video that I thought was important to make, and I hope people can find some value from it :)

    Hi I’m just wondering if you could tell me about the ultrasmooth Artist panels by Ampersand . Are they good for oil painting or are they way too smooth. Some people have complained that the page just slides off. I know that they have gessoboard ...but I was wondering about the Artist panels as these are a little cheaper have you painted on them? And if they are too smooth any solutions ? ..Would they work with both both portraits and landscapes? Thanks in advance🙏🦋
