For a small to medium sized living room with 8 foot ceilings, this speaker system actually sounds really good for the budget minded individual. I am using an Onkyo TX-NR7100 and have calibrated the speakers in their positions using DIRAC. It is pleasantly surprising. Got my receiver new from Amazon for $893 and the speakers for $350. After taxes and shipping ( shipping was free on Amazon Prime), I only spent $1,350.00 for all of it. Watching Dolby Atmos and DTS-X content with the correct speaker configuration in the Onkyo along with DIRAC calibration has provided a noticeable upgrade to my previous 7.1 Surround Sound System. Sound is much more ambient with a greater depth in the sound stage from the music sound track to the movie sound affects. Frequency response is more then satisfactory for the price I paid.
Thank you Ealan for the review . I waited for more than a week for your new video on this new klipsch from Costco. …… Waiting for the klipsch tower review .
Your channel is not just very informative but also very funny to watch. You really cover all angles and make if very easy for a beginner to understand. I'm about to upgrade from a soundbar to a Klipsch speakers system and you have helped a lot. Are the av receivers that you mention (denon, Sony, Onkyo, etc) the same as a "network" receiver? I also want to have a sound system around my house to play music and not sure if the home theater system is enough or if I need something else like an stereo receiver with wi-fi as I also want to use my speakers for parties, etc and not just movies. Thank you very much for being awesome Ealan.
Hello Ealan, Your channel and reviews are so much helpful! I have recently subscribed to your channel. Today I bought Klipsch reference cinema 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos speakers to upgrade from my current Monoprice premium 5.1 speakers. Currently, I have Pioneer 5.1 receiver which has 140w output, and I am not planning to upgrade my receiver any time soon. However, I am not sure if my receiver is a good fit for Klipsch speakers since it has 50w/75w RSM power handling. Just wondering if my receiver could damage my new Klipsch speakers in any way. Please advise. Thank you very much in advance!
Not at all! 🙌 Having too much power is a good thing, since that means it will have more headroom to work with. Under powering your speakers is more damaging, actually. But with your Pioneer AVR, just don’t turn it up TOO loud and you’ll be fine. 😄🤘
@@ealanosborne Thank you very much for your response and advice! I will keep in mind not to turn up the volume too loud 😀 By the way, the model number of my AVR is Pioneer VSX-524-K 700W.
I wanted the Klipsch 5.1, and had been shopping for a good deal on them lately. BUT when I found that I could pick up the Klipsch 5.1.4 for $299, I jumped on it and bought it immediately; just recently. I also bought the Onkyo AVR6100 to go along with it for $279. However, I have yet to set up the system; my movie room needs a bit of remodeling first. Then I need a new widescreen monitor for the completion. As this will replace my old Panasonic SX-316 avr, I am certain that my new system will be far better than I had previously. Since my room is small; roughly 12'W x 13'L, and it is a shared common wall with a neighbor, I'll have to dial the sound levels down, especially the bass. I believe for the money, I got a pretty good deal, and I am absolutely sure it will offer me far more value for my budget to meet my expectations fully. I know there are a lot of avr and speaker options available; many far more expensive and far more than what I need. But I think I got the best value for what I need in a home entertainment system.
@ealanosborne, Than you for the detailed video, I just bought this speaker system and I'm looking for a compatible AV receiver and unable to decide whether this system needs a 7 channel receiver or a 9 channel receiver. Can you please confirm if I can use this speaker system with Costco's Denon AVR S760H 7.2ch 8K AV Receiver ? I want to use all 4 upward firing speakers, could you please suggest me if I can use that receiver or not, Thank you!
To utilize all 4 upward firing speakers, you would need a 9 channel AVR. Costco only sells 7 channel AVRs (at least for now). A 9 channel AVR I’d recommend is the Onkyo 7100, which is currently on sale on Crutchfield.com for $899. Still pretty expensive, I know, but one of the best (and cheapest) 9 channel AVRs right now, especially when it’s on sale. 🤘
Which Klipsch sub would you recommend, keeping Blade Runner 2049 chuffing under consideration that I can upgrade the 10" one from this Klipsch 5.1.4 set to?
Thanks! And yeah! Even though a 7 channel receiver doesn’t utilize all 4 upward firing speakers, the jump in cost from a 7 to 9 channel receiver is significant! But the 5 main ear-level speakers and subwoofer are still a great value for what you pay, so I’m not opposed to doing a 5.1.2 system on the TSR-700. It’ll still sound great for a bargain. 🤘
ATMOS needs to come with a disclaimer.. especially for people with good 5.1 and 7.1 surround speaker setups. Every additional set of speakers has a greater diminished return for the investment. Adding 2 or 4 height speakers isn't going to "blow your mind." ATMOS receivers will send the same height channel sounds to your existing surround speakers. Which were ususally placed higher than ear level to begin with. You are not "missing out" .. the sound will play .. and it will be natural. You are not going to think.. "Who... that should have come more from above.." You simply won't notice the difference .. especially with your focus toward the action on the screen. ATMOS also irritates me. Every diagram of ATMOS speaker placement has you sitting on a loveseat or sofa with a very low back, in a very upright position. It's more like a media room than a home theater. For home theaters, seating is as important as the screen and the sound. Power reclining seats with adjustable headrests and cup holders are great. Even if you aren't reclined, they are still more comfortable than a low back sofa. If I ever build another home theater (which I probably will) I'll go ATMOS. But the extra cost and hassle to upgrade my existing 7.1 theater probably isn't worth it.
@@ealanosborne And that is what i am “struggling” with right now. I am spec’ing out my first big boy theater set, with a budget of around $3500 (speakers and receivers), and your review videos are helping (along with a few others), but I am also finding myself going down a rabbits hole of other speakers. I just stumbled on these Jamo, and on the surface and from a few video’s, they seem very solid. I had decided to go with the Klipsch Reference Dolby Atmos bundle, but Costco keeps running out of them. Because of that, and from some reviews I have seen, I am thinking about the Jamo’s. But…. Based on what you said about going 7.2 vs 5.2.2, i am now wondering if the Atmos is the way to go, or have pure side and pure back speakers. So much to think about, and i am not sure that there is an exact right answer.
@@74craines Alright...Jamo is having a ridiculous sale on Crutchfield right now. If you were to get: S 809 Towers (pair) Concert C 93 II Bookshelves (pair) Concert C 9 Surrounds (pair) Concert C 9 Center C 912 Subwoofer and a Marantz SR6015 (on Crutchfield), that would be a total of $3,354. But if you can find a used SR6015 or even Denon X4700h, or if you can hold off until the Onkyo RZ50 is available, you'll have enough for all that AND an Emotiva BasX A7 to power all 7 of your speakers externally. Otherwise, if an external amp is something you'll worry about later, I'd honestly use any leftover money for acoustic treatment, or nice speaker stands, or wall mounts, whatever. How does that sound? Although I'm not sure how long that Crutchfield sale will last...
@@ealanosborne two questions. If I go for the Denon 3700, that still gives me two channels to play with (along with some more money left over from my budget). Should I get the atmos upward firing speakers for the front towers? Secondly, do the bookshelf speakers go to the side or the back? I was just not sure where to place the surround speakers, since they are kind of facing in two different directions. And, do they face up and down, where the top speaker would bounce off the ceiling, or do i place the surround with the speakers facing left and right? Sorry for the tech questions, just trying to wrap my mind around all of this. Thanks in advance.
@@74craines 1) What is your ceiling height? 2) It’s tough to find an available X3700H, so that’s why I suggested SR6015. 3) Since you’re wanting to start the foundation of your Big Boy system, I would honestly not get any upward firing speakers. Big Boy systems with in-ceiling or ceiling mounted speakers are a must if you want true Atmos effects you can hear and feel. So I would personally spend money on a killer 7.1 than a decent 5.1.2. 4) Bookshelves would flank your listening position, and the surrounds would be placed behind you pointing at the listening position, not up towards the ceiling. Although that is much easier to pull off in a dedicated home theater that HAS a back wall…5) Bottom line is, spending money now on upward firing Atmos speakers may not be the best way to go about it. Unless you want to get something like the Elevation speakers from SVS and mount them. But getting into the Big Leagues means discrete speakers firing audio directly at your ears, not reflecting off the ceiling. 🤘
Any recommendations for an additional sub to make a 5. 2. 4? I bought this system but haven't opened the box yet as I'm still putting up drywall. This is my first system so I don't want to get something that's too powerful or not powerful enough to match up well with this sub.
I think it’s worth $100 more. The speakers are much bigger, and the sub is bigger too. Plus, you have upward firing speakers for Atmos, if you choose to go that route as well. 🙌
Thank you for taking the time to explain the spring clip system along with the receiver hookups. I'm still listening from my tv audio but plan on upping my audio game soon. I'm learning alot from your channel. Any way you can do an "explain like i'm five" explanation on some audio terms like Crossover, Gain, Hz settings, Preamps, etc...? Also have you seen or tried the Monoprice Premium 5.1.4 system? Its on sale for $209.99 and seems to good to be true, however I don't understand all the terminology.
It is too good to be true unless you have a very small room. Had it set up in my living room 15x18 ft . Had to be almost right next to the speakers to make them work I may have had defective units though. As when I tried to then take them off of the wall mounts I had put them on the threading screws inside the speakers came out.
@@ealanosborne I would agree that it's not robust but would be great if the quality was "okayish" for a complete novice. Maybe a super budget friendly setup.
good chance that the atmos experience wasn't up to par because you skipped the accuEQ setup. Based on the screenshot you shared, the Heights were only set 1ft further than the mains, so the atmost speaker to ceiling distance was not added which would create a different delay for them if they were. As Andrew Jones suggested with his atmos enabled speakers, once you run the auto EQ and finalize the distances/delays, you should add 1 to 3dB to the atmos speakers since they will lose some energy from having to bounce the sound off the ceiling. I run a 7.4.4 set up with the Andrew Jones Pioneer Elite speakers that have the atmos enable speakers built-in (like these Klipsch in your review), and the atmos effect is very convincing. My buddy just picked up this Klipsch system and will be using the Onkyo TX-NR7100. His room is not optimal since one wall opens up to another room, but it should be descent once he calibrates it.
Yep! The only caveat is you’ll only be able to utilize 2 out of the 4 upward firing Atmos speakers. But I still recommend that setup, since 9 channel receivers are so much more expensive. 👍
Just the right speakers for the beginners, but I dont know if I am right but I guess when you setting the distance of the atmos speakers, you have to measure the distance from you speakers to ceiling to your ears, but you had put the straight distance when setting up, correct me if I am wrong..
The Klipsch reference cinema system, Okonyo TX-RZ50, 75 inch Hisense U6H & Zappiti 4k NAS se paired with magnetar udp 800 for ISO network playback for me 🔥🔥🔥 also a Furman ELITE 15 PF I power conditioner
I just picked up this Klipsch reference cinema speaker kit for $250 open box on Newegg. I'm excited to see what I can get for that amount of money. I hope it lives up to the reputation.
I have a nice Atlantic Technology THX Certified 5.1 system, but the Klipsch cinema 5.1.4 package intrigued me as does Atmos so I too went for the Newegg deal. My sub died on my 5.1 system, so for the price of a sub I got a 5.1.4 Klipsch speaker package. Was thinking about getting the Denon 760 at Costco (on sale for $379!) but am leaning towards the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX305 9.2 channel AVR. Seems like Pioneer has HDMI 2.1 figured out (unlike Denon and Yamaha which are buggy at best from everything I've read) plus it's 9 channels for the full Atmos experience. Could also add a second sub I for 5.2.4 suppose :) Any benefit to different sized subs?
First, thanks for making these great and helpful reviews. I just bought this sound System and It sounded great without even doing any calibration (connected as 5.1 only). I would like to have a quick advice from you to know how to better connect and configure my Klipsch Reference Cinema System 5.1.4 with Dolby Atmos using a Receiver Pioneer VSX-30 (7.1 channels). Thanks a ton in advance. P.S. I like too much your sense of humor
First of all, you won’t be able to fully utilize all 4 upward firing speakers in the 5.1.4 Cinema system, since you’ll need a 9 channel receiver. But I would hook up your front 2 height channels. That’s most likely the best Atmos effect you’ll experience. But not every situation is the same, so I would also try and connect only your rear height channels and see if that sounds better in your situation. Experimentation is important! 😁
I picked this up for $599 this week. Now just trying to find a receiver to pair with it. Should I pickup the Yamaha TSR-700 that costco sells, or should I splurge and buy a 9 channel?
Yeah I'd suggest getting the Yamaha TSR-700. It's a great receiver for the price. And it'll be a great start to an awesome home theater, even though you're not technically using all four upward-firing speakers. The main ear-level speakers and subwoofer alone are a great deal for $599!
Hi Ealan, this is a great video and thank you so much for all the detail information. I always love watching your videos and have learned a lot of things. We just bought this cinema system and I was wondering if you can give me some advice on how to set it up with a Yamaha Advantage EX-A870 receiver. The setting includes 6 in-ceiling speakers as well. I think that I'm going to need an external amp. What you think 🤔? Thanks a lot
The Yamaha RX-A870 is a 7 channel receiver, but you don’t need to power the Klipsch Cinema System with external amps. The Cinema system is still considered “budget,” so a receiver like the A870 should provide plenty of power to those speakers. If and when you decide to get larger or more powerful speakers in the future, that’s when you might want to also invest in external amps, since the A870 is one of the last 7 channel receivers sold that supports Dolby Atmos AND has a full set of pre outs to use external amps. 👍
@@ealanosborne Thank you for the answer, you really know what you're doing..Do you recommend any other good and affordable system for a living room space of 500sq?
Yep. The 5.0.2 system is still better. But it’s been out of stock since December and Costco doesn’t have plans to restock it anytime soon. BUT…I have a hunch they may be waiting for the Spring when Klipsch’s updated Reference line debuts. So maybe Costco will also get a new version of the 5.0.2 system…hopefully a 5.1.2 version so there’s a subwoofer involved. 😁🤘
Eh…flagship Samsung soundbars will be better than this, but it’s also 2 completely different philosophies: Do you want “one and done,” where you can easily connect things and not worry about speaker wire, but can’t swap out any components? Go with a soundbar. Or do you want to use this Klipsch system and a receiver as a starting point, being able to upgrade different parts slowly over time? 🤷♂️ Food for thought. 😊
Hey sorry this might b a stupid question but does this mean these speakers have 2 speakers in it so the sounds comes out from both speakers same time? Or you have to choose which one I'll use?
Hi there! I just bought a Denon AVR-S760H receiver and the Klipsch HT50 Home Theater Surround Sound 5.0 System, but ended up returning that open box speaker set because it was missing the rubber feet for the stands. That said, would this setup be better than the HT50 setup? I can't believe this is selling on Amazon right now for $429.99! I currently have a set of 4 Bose Model 141 speakers, 2 Onkyo Model SKF-100's, a Bose video speaker as my center channel (only a single speaker though, not a real center speaker), and an 8" Onkyo sub. I have vaulted ceilings where my tv is, so I thought about the 5.1 theater set, but this Atmos set has a bigger sub and the other speakers are larger too. My receiver is only a 7.2, but would this system be good for me regardless? Thanks in advance!
Yes! Since the speakers are larger than any online photo can capture, they would work well with your situation…at least if running a 5.1 (or 7.1, if you decide to use a pair of your current speakers). Since you have vaulted ceilings, the up-firing Atmos speakers won’t do anything at all, so I’d keep it at 5.1 or 7.1. But I agree! It’s one of the best complete systems you can get for the price! 🤘
@@ealanosborne Awesome, thanks for the response! So to confirm what I think you’re telling me… it’s still better to get this set and not use the upward firing speakers (and use two of my other speakers as my atmos), correct? Rather than getting the other set with basically smaller everything.
@@DerekSanford You got it! It’s always best to have separate speakers mounted up high, firing audio directly at you, as opposed to bouncing audio off any surface. 👍
Loved your video. I am interested in buying the 5.1.4 with current deal in Costco @399$. I do not have budget to buy an amplifier so do you still recommend me to buy the 5.1.4? Can i still enjoy the sound of this equipment without an amplifier? Please suggest.
Do you mean without a receiver? Because this system is a passive speaker system, so they need to be powered by a receiver. You wouldn’t be able to connect it directly to a TV like a soundbar.
@@ealanosborne Yes, i meant receiver. Sorry i am still learning. I only used a sound bar till now so no idea how these speakers should be setup. I was assuming these can be connected directly to TV.
Thanks for the video - it explained enlightened me. {Open for discussion} I am currently using *cough* computer speakers (4 of them) *cough* that I connected with an audio splitter to the audio-out on my projector. It, of course, doesn't give true surround, but it does make the sound MUCH better than using just (2) little speakers (plus it drowns out most of the sound from the projector's fan). I have it set up as a 4.1 system (2 in the front; 2 hanging from the ceiling). I saw this system in-store at Costco for $649.99 (can you see the future?) today, and that's why I just watched your vids. All that said, I am looking for a TRUE (wired) system. Any recommendations on how I should go about it? As I said, it's connected to a projector, which means all my wiring would be in the middle of the room, not the front as it would be when using a TV. Though I would prefer a wired system, do you think a wireless would be better? Any thoughts in general?
Hi! Really, the only thing you might consider - given that you're projector is in the middle of the room - is a long HDMI cable (I'd recommend Monoprice) to then run to a traditional receiver closer to the front (or back?) of the room. Then it's not a matter of having to snake speaker wires all around from the center of the ceiling...it's just the HDMI cable to worry about. And since you're running 4 little computer speakers now, maybe a more affordable upgrade is the less expensive Klipsch 5.1 Reference Theater Pack? Easier to mount too, since the speakers are smaller, but still puts out impressive sound.
I'm watching like a Hawk for the Onkyo TX-NR7100 to go back on sale (was $649 recently), although I wouldn't mind the TX-RZ50 either, just not sure I'd ever use the pre-outs. While I'm waiting I decided to hook up L-C-R and the sub using the Klipsch Reference Cinema speakers on my old AVR just to check them out while I'm [impatiently] awaiting THE deal haha I watched some of the new Top Gun and various Star Wars and related demo bits and the Klipsch don't actually sound bad. Will be fun to see how they sound wired to a 9 channel AVR after running them through Dirac Live and the Klipsch Optimization on the Onkyo (if it does anything?? Their manual says almost nothing about what it does?).
The speakers looks little heavy. About 8lb. Is it a good idea to mount them on the wall? Because the mounting brackets that are available in market are so small. I am not sure those will hold the speaker. Also the mounting bracket design is just holding the globe. Can someone advise?
Well, I guess if you listen to music at least 50% of the time, a stereo pair of RP speakers will be better. If it’s mainly movies and TV you’ll be listening to, surround sound all day with the 5.1.4 Cinema system, my friend. 😁🤘
@@ealanosborne Thank you for such a quick reply! What you said is exactly what has me torn between these as they will be connected to my PC that I use for everything: gaming, music and movies. I do listen to music a lot. On PC 5.1 seems to have a bigger impact on gaming immersion than movies for most streaming services seem to be in stereo. I am upgrading from a Logitech z5500 5.1 system from 2006. I decided to give the bookshelves a try first because I have never experienced professional quality speakers. The value of the 5.1.4 system is hard to turn down but its probably less of an upgrade from where I am coming from. I figure I can always add more to the bookshelves over time and that I will end up with a higher quality system in the end. Love your videos, keep up the great work!
Did you set the Dramatic EQ setup? Also you're right about sub..I use it as a second sub,But turn it down low..Its just too loud..Overall they sound really good! thx bud! But my system is the old one without the upward firing speakers!Still enjoy its sound anyways!.but sometimes it just seems to be missing something!
Hi Elan, I am from India and planning on getting this system. My room is small 10ft by 10ft and ceiling height 10ft. Will this system provide me with good Atmos experience. I am having a pioneer lx305 9 channel AVR. I am currently having a Polk signature bookshelf speakers right now , i feel like it is huge for my room and it sounds boomy and i have to turn my volume way up to hear the treble.
The 5 main speakers in this bundle are a great value. But the upward firing Atmos speakers are just okay. And with 10 foot ceilings, you’re honestly not going to get a noticeable Atmos experience. 😕 If your Polk speakers are too boomy, they might be too close to a wall. Or perhaps you can try to change the EQ of certain speakers by reducing the frequencies 120 Hz and below by about 3 dB to start, and experiment further, having the subwoofer take care of the low end. 🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne . Thank you so much for the reply. If i pull the speaker any further It will be very close to the listener. I am getting an used 9 small jamo Satellite speaker at a bargain price. I will try to use this as 5.1.4 with HTS 10 as subwoofer. Do you think this is a good idea. I am kind of experimenting as it is real hard to get to audition speakers where I live.
Thank you for your great videos! I really enjoy your sense of humor, makes the videos even more fun to watch. I, like you, prefer seperates all day. I installed this speaker system in my office, which is just a small bedroom, with a Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505. I initially just used basic measurements and settings while setting up the system and it sounded pretty darn good. I then used Pioneers own mcacc to setup the system and didn't really notice much of a difference. I will note though, as you have stated, I was getting a lot of chuffing from the subwoofer. I went into the sub settings and set it to zero and controlled the volume directly from the sub and it sounded much better, no chuffing! I then decided to give Dirac a try and this is where I am floored. Holy crap batman, It really is a night and day difference from everything I tried with this system to this point. The soundstage is just amazing, really pulls you into whatever your watching, sounds very "spacious". My point is that, over the years owning many different AVR's, is that you can have nice equipment but if isn't setup correctly it will still sound like poo. Get in there and tweek tweek tweek, utilize everything the AVR is capable of doing, don't just rely on the AVR's tuning program. Get out a tape measure and mess with all the settings till you get it right. You will be more satisfied with the end results for sure. Tune it to sound like you want it to. This system cost me $850 at Costco and is listed on Klipsch's website for like $1850 thereabouts. You get this sucker setup right in the right sized room, it will deliver big time and at a reasonable price.
5.0.2 is still better, I think. But they haven’t restocked it on Costco’s website since Christmas time. ☹️ Maybe they’re going to reveal a newer/better version later this year? 🤷♂️
For bare wire connections like those spring connectors u should use this adapters if u can’t use ur banana connectors. Flexible conector ( ua-cam.com/video/_HsGlTg6x24/v-deo.html ), All types of Banana connectors ( ua-cam.com/video/HphbTOHtH8o/v-deo.html )
These go on sale on the 23rd for $699. Wish i could find the old package that had the towers and only required 7 channels. I did ask a Costco associate and they mentioned they were a discontinued set, so I may have been too late to the game.
I haven’t gotten any confirmation on this, but they may have discontinued the tower set since the Reference line is getting a facelift and slight improvements, which will be released this Spring. So maybe Costco will release a similar set with the newly improved speakers? 🤷♂️
@@Speciulboy63 I think they 7 channel tower system is on sale right now for $100 off / $900 at Costco. Not available for delivery in my area, but it was in the email blast this morning.
Hello @Ealan, Hope you are doing well! I am happy to let you know that I recently upgraded my AVR to Denon AVR X4700H so that I can get the full benefit of the Dolby Atmos sound system with my new Klipsch Reference Cinema 5.1.4 speakers. I have a few questions though, can I use my old Monoprice satellite speakers as the height speakers and Klipsch speakers as floor speakers? The reason I am asking is that I feel the upward-firing speakers of the Klipsch system are not powerful enough, so I am wondering if using Monoprice satellite speakers as height speakers would give a better Dolby Atmos effect compared to Klipsch upward-firing speakers? Also, can I use Klipsch and Monoprice subwoofers together? Trying to see if I can have a 5.2.4 speaker setup. Is it safe to mix and match Klipsch speakers/subwoofer with Monoprice speakers/subwoofer on a single Denon AVR? Please advise. Highly appreciate your guidance!
You absolutely can do that! Most of the height effects are atmospheric and fairly subtle anyway, so mounting your Monoprice satellites up high will work much better than the upward-firing Klipsch speakers. And you can most certainly use the Klipsch and Monoprice subs together. Just make sure and level match them so one doesn’t overpower the other. But 2 subwoofers is always better than 1. 😁🤘
This system is no longer on the Costco site , but it’s all over the place online and for 1/4 of the manufacturers msrp. I had to pick it up despite not owning a 9 channel receiver. Need to pick up a 7, any suggestions?
@@ealanosborne yeah, I had been eying it all year waiting until today, it was on their site up until a few weeks back. I was hoping they’d have had some in store here in Houston, Tx, no luck.
@@SP0RT-HIGHLIGHTS Okay sweet. I’d recommend the Onkyo TX-NR6050 that they sell. Little more power and more reliable internals than the Denon S760H. Not by a huge margin, but still better. But if you are a Denon fan, it’s still a good AVR. 😄🤘
@@ealanosborne I’m jacked to the tits right now, Ealan. As this interchange took place, I scored and found a display model of the nr6100. What started off as a bummer of a Black Friday, is now probably one of the best of recent memories
I have a question if anyone can answer. My house is pre-wired so ideally I’d mount the surround speakers near the ceiling one in each corner. My question is, will this affect the the upwards facing speakers with it being so close to the ceiling?
I mean yes and no. I’m dropping a comparison video tomorrow against the other 5.0.2 bundle that Costco offers and mention how the upward firing drivers on this Cinema system are pretty weak. But being close to the ceiling might actually make them more affective after all, since they’re honestly too weak to bounce sound off the ceiling much of they were normal ear height. So having them near the ceiling might actually be a cool effect, with the surround audio coming straight at you, and the Atmos audio immediately bouncing off the ceiling that it’s near. 🤷♂️

Finally, we have 5.1.4 thanks to a Black Friday special on the Onkyo TX-NR7100! Got everything setup, ran Dirac LIve and wow this is impressive for the money! The crossovers Dirac Live set were interesting (well below the Klipsch datasheet specs), but it sounds great. Atmos up-firing is okay'ish, but even if you just used the Klipsch Cinema Reference HTIB for a 5.1 setup, it would be great for the price. You definitely get more audio immersion with the Atmos up-firing speakers, but I wouldn't say it's earth shattering. Super Tramp Breakfast in America in FLAC sounds great on these speakers, amazing even for the price. I'm LOVING the Onkyo NR7100, incredible piece of home theater/audio tech.
hey Elan, i have 2 polk s60 towers and a denon Denon AVR S760H 7.2ch 8K AV Receiver. do you think the Klipsch Reference Cinema System 5.1.4 will make a good 7.2.4 when combined with the polk i already own. thanks!
Yeah, I would say so! The main satellites and center speaker of the 5.1.4 Cinema system are great for the price. The upward firing Atmos speakers built in? Not so much…but those Polk s60 towers look great!
@@ealanosborne thank you, appreciate your reply. Might I recommend, if you have the resources, you also do a sound demo for us … it’s the only thing I go to other channels for after seeing your videos. Goodluck.
Thanks for this video. This was very useful video especially only you have an video review of this model . I got this speakers at costco yesterday for $499. Now I'm shopping around for a receiver . I just came to know this requires a 9 channel receiver to get full benefits. I'm thinking to get an used Pioneer Elite VSX-LX304 (9 ch) or should i get a brand new Onkyo TX-NR6050 (7 ch) receiver from costco? Appreciate your inputs on this.
The Costco exclusive Onkyo TX-NR6050 is a great receiver for what it’s worth. Since the upward firing Atmos speakers are just “okay,” I would say using a 7 channel receiver is not a bad option. If you DO find a used Pioneer (or whichever) receiver for almost the same price as the Onkyo (which is currently $499) it light be a good choice. But the Onkyo would be a little more set up for the future, since it came out only a few months ago, and can handle 8K video, has HDMI 2.1 ports, etc. something to think about. 😁🤘
@@ealanosborne Thank you for your quick response. Appreciate it. I mainly got the 5.2.4 speakers due to the upward firing speakers but since you are saying its just OK, I'm thinking to go the other route. Apart from this Klipsch 5.2.4 system, is there any speaker system you recommend under $600? I wanted to buy the latest receiver but the 9 channel is too expensive.
@@RajanKannan11 Well, the Atmos speakers are okay, but they do add SOMETHING, which is better than nothing. 😄 And the main speakers are large and put out some pretty powerful audio. Along with the sub that also comes with it, I don’t think you’ll find a better system for $499. Even $600. The only thing close is the 5.1 Prime system from SVS, but the speakers alone are $1,100. And I get it…9 channel receivers are too expensive!
@@ealanosborne Thank you so much for your inputs. I got your point. For $499 the Klipsch 5.2.4 is a great value and pair it with the latest Onkyo 6050 receiver should be a great combo. Sorry one more question, I also got a pair of Polk VT60 ceiling speakers on sale for $149 (pair) to add it in the ceiling above sitting area to get the Atomos effects. Is this an overkill for my setup if I go with the Klipsch 5.2.4 speakers and the latest Onkyo 6050 receiver. ? Thank you so much.
@@RajanKannan11 Not at all! I prefer mounting Atmos speakers anyway, so if you just use the main speakers in the 5.1.4 Cinema system, and the mounted Polk speakers for Atmos, that’d be great with the Onkyo!
It is now for $599 in costco. On your recommendation i did $800 atmos setup from costco denon 760 klipsh 5.1 and r41 speakers. Happy with sound output. Will try this and see else will return n slowly upgrade. Thank you for good vdos
I wonder if they will be replacing the R-12SW? It’s not on the website and the stores are not getting any more product in. And they just dropped the new Denon 760 receiver at my store.
Please review the towers and 5.2.2 atmos set up with it. Waiting for that review and help in the software config to have a theatre level settings and calibration. Definitely a great video to look for. Appreciate it. Happy to learn the tips and set up here. Paired up 5.0.2 with the following subwoofers, what is the best set up? i have a question, i am very interested in buying the Klipsch Theater Pack 5.0 Home Cinema but since i am new in this I am wondering If I need to buy something else in addition in order to connect it to my TV for movies and music or am I good to go? Many thanks 🙏🏻
@@fabianmaamari6829 No, sorry. It's not like a soundbar. It's a speaker system that requires power from an outside source, so it can't do anything by itself.
I'm getting confused by alot of the stuff would the denon avr s760h or Yamaha tsr-700 be enough to use this speaker pack or no? Had some say yes and some say no..
Not completely. Those receivers are 7 channel, and to fully utilize all 4 of the upward firing Atmos speakers, you’d need a 9 channel receiver. But they are so much more expensive than 7 channel receivers. But in my video, I explain that you could still get away with an s760h or tsr-700 because the 5 main speakers in the system (and subwoofer) still sound great for the price. But you’d max out at only using 2 of the 4 upward firing speakers. But 2 is better than none! 😁🤘
@@ealanosborne thanks. Yeah thats where I'm torn. Its soo much more for the 9.2 recievers. But i want full atmos effect. Whats weird is a few sites sell a similae pack with the 760s . Just trhing ti figure out best option. I'm on a fixed income due to my health so its taking me along time to try and save up to make this happen. So gotta be sure what way i go
I was talking to an employee in costco while I was looking at oled's. They said they are planning on having more options next year for in store at least. We will see what those options are.
Just got it for 500 lol decided to return the receiver from Costco, was only 7 channel and they still don’t carry a 9….. What receiver do you recommend now? Any sales coming up?
Honestly, the cost jump from 7 to 9 channel AVRs is significant, so if you wanna save some money at first, going with a 7 channel AVR will still get you a great sounding system, even without utilizing all 4 upward-firing speakers. The 5 main ear-level speakers and subwoofer are still great for the price. All 3 AVRs they sell at Costco (Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha…in that order) are good. The only 9 channel AVR that’s still a decent price is the Onkyo 7100 for $1,100. They all go up from there.
@@ealanosborne thanks for your comment and suggestions. I figure I get a hood recover to start now and looks like the price doubles. I was looking for an onkyo tx rz50 but they are so hard to find. Heard any good things VSX-LX305 ELITE 9.2?
Will you be comparing this system to the SVS prime satellite system? I would love to hear comments about soundstage, imaging, bass, overall clarity etc between the two systems.
Hadn’t thought about it, but I’d be curious! Although from what I remember when I did review the SVS Prime 5.1 system (but sadly had to send it back), the quality of SVS’s speakers would be slightly better, more neutral. And no question the SVS PB or SB-1000 Pro subwoofer blows this intro Klipsch sub out of the water! 😀🤘Although no Atmos with SVS, but I don’t think that’s a deal breaker since the Klipsch upward firing drivers are…meh
My house currently has wires for a 5.1 channel, so rear surround speakers, front L and R and center. With these atmos speakers, are extra connections required for atmos features?
I have the Onkyo TX NR6050 and the KLIPSCH 5.1.4 theater pack. However during the configuration process regarding speaker channels, it only went up to 5.1.2, am I doing something incorrectly? Best regards
No. The NR6050 is only a 7 channel AVR, so it maxes out at 5.1.2. The NR7100 is the cheapest new 9 channel AVR on the market which will support a 5.1.4 setup. But I mentioned in the video that it’s still a good bargain to get the NR6050 since the 5 main speakers and subwoofer of the 5.1.4 Cinema System are a really good deal on their own. It’s such a huge jump in price to move up to a 9 channel AVR, which is silly, IMO.
If I were to choose from ur other video Dolby Atmos under a 1000 dollars (Klipsch reference 5.1 + 2 book shelf speakers paired with Sony str-dh1080) vs this Klipsch ? Which is better ?
Hmmm…that’s tough because the main speakers and subwoofer from the 5.1.4 Cinema System are better. But having 2 little satellite speakers mounted for Atmos speakers is better than upward-firing speakers…so if you can find 2 extra satellite speakers on sale and went with the 5.1.4 Cinema System, that’d probably be best! 😄
Do you mean a vaulted ceiling? I wouldn’t recommend upward firing Atmos speakers with vaulted ceilings. I’d hesitate to recommend upward firing speakers with any ceiling above 8 feet. And yeah, if there are exposed beams throughout, that could potentially mess with sound bouncing around.
I have Onkyo TX-NR696 which is 7.2 channel but it has zone 2 also. Can I connect this system to my TX-NR696? Can I power all the speakers and their upward firing speakers? If yes, should I be aware of any specifics? Any response is greatly appreciated!!
That Onkyo can only process 7 channels at once. So even if you use Zone 2, it limits the rest of the receiver to play only up to 5 channels. But you could still get away with 7 channels powering this Klipsch Cinema system. Sure, you're not getting the full effect, since you can only power 2 of the 4 upward firing speakers, but the main satellite speakers still sound really good even by themselves!
How do this speakers sound, are they realy loud and clear or im bettler whifh sony SSC5,SSC8 forget about the up atmos speakers because they are no good and im goin to put other speakers in mine celling
I haven’t heard the Sony speakers personally, but I’m willing to bet Klipsch will be brighter and have a little more detail in the higher frequencies, since that’s a typical Klipsch characteristic. 👍
I think it’ll be an upgrade to a certain degree. But getting a traditional receiver+wired speakers system typically means you plan to expand and upgrade over time. It’s just a matter of goals and preference. 😊🤘
Question- not an expert, I wanted to get these for my room(it’s a master size). I only plan to use the speakers in the box, no plans of adding more since I already have more advanced setup in my media and living room. Can I use a 5.1 receiver then? Thanks,
Sure! You wouldn’t be utilizing the upward firing Atmos speakers built in, but for the application, this would still be a kickass 5.1 speaker system. There is also the 5.1 Reference Theater Pack for less, but I understand if you want bigger speakers and a bigger sub, and this system is still a great deal for what you get. 🙂
So with me not able to hear a lot of low frequency sounds and just bad hearing this would be a good system, or would you recommend something else. Now my wife hears everything, so we are black and white for sound. Also I have high vaulted ceilings. Thank you for your time.
I wouldn’t recommend this system with vaulted ceilings. Those would require a traditional system, with speakers mounted to the ceiling (or cut into the ceiling) if you want to experience Dolby Atmos height effects. But that’s going to cost more, unfortunately. But even though Atmos is the rage right now, a solid 5.1 or 7.1 traditional system still sounds leagues better than TV speakers and most sound bars 👍
These aren’t only a “intro” surround I’ve been running big cerwin Vegas for my setup and a quad 12” separate subwoofers. I think it’s time for me to tone things down a bit definitely going to choose this system
I watched your video to see what i was receiving, i received mine today, and even though i watched your video, i'm still surprised @ the size, your vids are good and glad their hands on, and i am waiting for the Onkyo 7100 from Amazn which is any day, Great informative and entertaining channel!
To save money, I’d definitely go with the TSR-700. Sure, you’re not utilizing all 9 channels, but save your money for better speakers in the future first, then get a 9 channel receiver if you still feel inclined. 🤘
i got these today, but only now realized that i need a 9.1 channel receiver. i currently have a 7.2 channel ATMOS receiver with a 7.1 channel non-ATMOS speaker set up which is... ok, but the speakers are getting old and don't sound quiet as good anymore. not sure what to do. i don't want to spend anymore money. current plan is to not use the rear upward firing speakers until i'm ready to get a better receiver.
I mention in the video I don’t object at all to using a 7 channel AVR since the upward firing speakers are just okay. And also, try and experiment with which Atmos speakers you end up using. 2 channel Atmos doesn’t have to be up front. It can be in the rear if you want. Whichever gets the better effect in your home theater space. 👍 But honestly, since you already have speakers, I’d suggest using 2 of your existing speakers and mounting them on the wall above the TV, on the ceiling, or even behind up high, pointing them down at your listening position. The ear-level Klipsch cinema speakers are fantastic! So using 2 existing speakers for Atmos would actually be the optimal 5.1.2 setup for now.
Is it worth it at $500? I'm looking to get into my first home theater ever after over a decade of 2.1, but the receivers that can power this setup are sometimes twice as expensive as the speakers themselves
It’s worth it even just for the baseline 5 speakers and the sub. The upward firing Atmos speakers are just icing on the cake. With that being said, I’d say even pairing these with a 7 channel AVR is worth it, even tho you’d only be utilizing 2 of the 4 upward firing speakers (since you know as well that the cost of a 9 channel AVR is much more expensive). 👍
@@ealanosborne I ended lucking out and getting this entire set for $300 brand new (waiting for delivery). I also got the TX-NR797 for just over $500 as well, so I'm definitely going to be referring to this video for setup. Thank you so much!
@@JTRumpet491 I had some stands sent to me by Aperion Audio (which they sell on their website), which I was grateful for, since they’re expensive. 😬 But these (link below) are probably the best for the price. Not the greatest, but decent enough for the Cinema pack. 🙌 amzn.to/3bryudo
Great review Elan, I am on the fence of deciding 5.1.4 vs 5.0.2 . I picked up 5.1.4 a month back for $599 and Costco has the 5.0.2 back in stock for $899. I need them for my movie room which is 20x20 with 9’ ceiling. Any recommendation ?
Yeah, a movie room that size would fair better with the 5.0.2 tower system (and a subwoofer, of course). The 5.1.4 would still do a decent job, but the tower system still has a slight edge. 🤘
@@ealanosborne . My question would be, is it worthy to buy the Denon 7. 1 receiver at Costco for $500 and lose the use of the 2 high channels for a total investment of $1,000, or buy the Denon 9.2 receiver that currently runs for $1,599 @ Amazon and Denon website which will be $2,100 total investment ( $1,600 + $500). In other words, in order to utilize the high channels would require an extra $1,100 ). Any suggestions would be gladly appreciated due to the fact that I don't own a AVR yet. Excellent videos as always, especially for newbies in the audio world 🤦♂️🤠
@@menacordero1 Well, since you have yet to own a receiver, I’d assess what your home theater goals are. Are you wanting to have a nice budget system that will last you for years to come? Or are you thinking you’ll want to dive into home theater now as an investment? Like you’ll want to upgrade speakers and receivers piece by piece as the years go by? Getting the Denon receiver at Costco would be a great way to get a solid baseline system without breaking the bank. It can support 8K video and has HDMI 2.1, so it is set up nicely for future tech that will roll out. Getting the Denon x3700h, for example, would allow to utilize all 9 channels with this Klipsch Cinema system, but it’s also more of a long term investment. That’s due to the fact that it has a full set of pre outs on the back. That allows for the use of external amps to power your speakers. The Cinema system does NOT need external amps to power them. That might damage them. BUT…if and when you decide to get bigger, better speakers in the future, powered by external amps, the x3700h will be able to accommodate those upgrades without having to buy another receiver. Make sense? The 7 channel Denon is a great short term investment. The x3700h is a great long term investment. 😁🤘
That’s great news! Thanks for sharing! 🙌🎉
Don't adjust LPF of LFE. It should be 120hz all the time. By adjusting it you are limitting .1 LFE movie effects which happen in between 0-120hz.
Can’t wait for the tower review !!
Does this system have better quality sound than the Klipsch 5.1 bundle when you are not using any enhanced Dolby Atmos features?
They change the model #'s @ Costco & Sam's Club to be Warehouse specific. That way Best Buy, Amazon, etc... can't price match.
Hello Ealan,
Your channel and reviews are so much helpful!
I will keep in mind not to turn up the volume too loud 😀

With your neighbor being so close, I totally agree the system you purchased will be an amazing upgrade! 🤘🎉
You probably didn’t gain anything, but a bunch of headaches by using 14 gauge wire, since the system was designed for 16 gauge.
Do you think these sound better than Bose Accustimass 5.1 system?
Paired with a good receiver, yes. 👍
Anything in the Reference Premiere line is a step up from the base Reference line. Something like the RP-1000SW.
If I only have a 7.1 AVR and want to use these speakers, would it be better to use the front or rear atmos speakers?
Thanks for the great review.. can we assign / configure a Denon 7.1 AVR to play the Height Speakers (all 4) in this model ...?
Is this 5.1.4 kit good to use with the Yamaha TSR-700 receiver? Your channel has a lot of great information😀
Thanks!
Very true. A solid 7.1 or 7.2 can still beat out a so-so Atmos system with the right equipment. 🤘
If you were to get:
S 809 Towers (pair)
Concert C 93 II Bookshelves (pair)
Concert C 9 Surrounds (pair)
Concert C 9 Center
C 912 Subwoofer
and a Marantz SR6015 (on Crutchfield), that would be a total of $3,354.
This should be pretty comparable:
amzn.to/3bJFJxi
Only 400 now is it worth. It's 100 bucks more now than the theater pack. To get a reciever to run that properly is expensive
I’m going to assume the Monoprice package is not as robust as this Klipsch system, given the price. But I’d love to get my hands on one!
@@ealanosborne I would agree that it's not robust but would be great if the quality was "okayish" for a complete novice. Maybe a super budget friendly setup.
@@frozengfx1 It seems okay-ish. K Pace Guy has a review on that system…
@@ealanosborne Thank you!
good chance that the atmos experience wasn't up to par because you skipped the accuEQ setup.
How did they end up sounding?
Whats the ohm on the speakers can i use a Onkyo TX-NR575 7.2-Ch
You could def use that Onkyo receiver. The speakers are 8 ohm nominal. 👍
Would a Onkyo TX-NR696 receiver work with this system??
Woohoo! 🎉
Do you have any suggestions for ceiling or in-wall speakers for the home theatre system?
ELAC debut series in wall speakers are the best you can get around $300. If that’s too out of your budget, Klipsch is the next best thing. 👍
Im a Costco fan and thry have good lineups for speakers. But his time ill go for Klipsch the fives since im putting them on my garage.
@@ealanosborne thank you! Appreciate the suggestions. I’m excited to try everything out.
I think I’d still prefer the 5.0.2 system from Costco. Not too much more pricey but the 9 channel reciever gets expensive.
Is this set better then high level soundbars like samsung soundbars the best of them
Eh…flagship Samsung soundbars will be better than this, but it’s also 2 completely different philosophies: Do you want “one and done,” where you can easily connect things and not worry about speaker wire, but can’t swap out any components? Go with a soundbar. Or do you want to use this Klipsch system and a receiver as a starting point, being able to upgrade different parts slowly over time? 🤷♂️ Food for thought. 😊
What are the model numbers for subwoofer and satellite?
Front/rear speakers are RCS-SAT and cetre is RCS-CEN.

{Open for discussion}
I am currently using *cough* computer speakers (4 of them) *cough* that I connected with an audio splitter to the audio-out on my projector.
Ealan, which do you think is a better buy? A pair of Klipsch RP-160m bookshelves for $200 or the Reference Cinema System 5.1.4 for $400?
If your Polk speakers are too boomy, they might be too close to a wall.
Glad you enjoy the videos! 😊 And thanks for your insight into your system! Tweaking is essential, you’re absolutely right! 🤘
Just curious, what level do you play the white noise at while calibrating?
Hi Ealan, This set is $600 now, comparing to the 5.0.2 tower one. Which one is better if space is not a problem?
5.0.2 is still better, I think. But they haven’t restocked it on Costco’s website since Christmas time. ☹️ Maybe they’re going to reveal a newer/better version later this year? 🤷♂️

Hello @Ealan,
Hope you are doing well!
@@ealanosborne Thank you very much for your quick response and guidance! You are simply awesome!!

@@ealanosborne thanks. I just ordered these. Been wanting to upgrade from my sound bar and couldn’t resist for $350.
Very informative. How would this system compare to a sonos arc with the gen 3 sub?

I used regular banana plugs on the receiver side and then got flex pin banana plugs for the speaker side and it worked great!
Nice workaround! 🎉

Lightly tin (solder) your bare wire ends.
My house currently has wires for a 5.1 channel, so rear surround speakers, front L and R and center. With these atmos speakers, are extra connections required for atmos features?
Yes, that’s correct. The Atmos speakers count as their own channel, so they require their own separate speaker wire
Soldier the speaker wire ends before inserting the wire into the speaker
I have an open ceiling in my basement. Would you recommend sticking with 5.1 or would the 5.1.4 work with the exposed joists in the ceiling?
Do you mean a vaulted ceiling? I wouldn’t recommend upward firing Atmos speakers with vaulted ceilings. I’d hesitate to recommend upward firing speakers with any ceiling above 8 feet. And yeah, if there are exposed beams throughout, that could potentially mess with sound bouncing around.
Which one is better
Reference cenima 5.1.4 or Reference theater 5.1
Suggest some budget receiver for both.
I am thinking for sony str dh790
Cinema 5.1.4 is bigger and better. Sony receiver is a great one. Also Denon S760H or Onkyo TX-NR5100.
I know I'm late on commenting but I have the Vizio Elevate 5.1.4 should I upgrade to something like this or will it not be that much of a upgrade?
"Old fashioned wired system"...... It's the only way to go for true home theater.
Thank you very much!
is this compatible with Yamaha TSR-700 7.1 or i should go with 9 channel?
To save money, I’d definitely go with the TSR-700. Sure, you’re not utilizing all 9 channels, but save your money for better speakers in the future first, then get a 9 channel receiver if you still feel inclined. 🤘
How do they sound?: Talks about price.
@ealan do you know if you have your sub settings to just LFE or LFE+Main?
Just LFE
i got these today, but only now realized that i need a 9.1 channel receiver. i currently have a 7.2 channel ATMOS receiver with a 7.1 channel non-ATMOS speaker set up which is... ok, but the speakers are getting old and don't sound quiet as good anymore. not sure what to do. i don't want to spend anymore money. current plan is to not use the rear upward firing speakers until i'm ready to get a better receiver.
But honestly, since you already have speakers, I’d suggest using 2 of your existing speakers and mounting them on the wall above the TV, on the ceiling, or even behind up high, pointing them down at your listening position. The ear-level Klipsch cinema speakers are fantastic! So using 2 existing speakers for Atmos would actually be the optimal 5.1.2 setup for now.
Hello, which one do you recommend me to buy? This system 5.1.4 or the sonos arc for my living room 3x3 m.
3x3 meters would do fine with a Sonos Arc, for sure. 👍
The system has arived, But it is Larger than it looks on UA-cam... !!!
Surprised me too!
@@JTRumpet491 Nice!!! My Onkyo TX-NR787 was my primary AVR for several years. 🤘
@@ealanosborne I'm just getting started so I'm stoked for delivery day haha. What speaker stands were you using here? Thanks again for the help!
@@JTRumpet491 I had some stands sent to me by Aperion Audio (which they sell on their website), which I was grateful for, since they’re expensive. 😬 But these (link below) are probably the best for the price. Not the greatest, but decent enough for the Cinema pack. 🙌

@@ealanosborne thanks much for quick response 👍
