    We seriously need help on how to deal with little accidents and u unexpected situations. For example if you fall, or if you drop something on your clothes at a restaurant and now you have a stain, if you're trying to cut something on your plate and it slips out onto the table, etcetera etcetera.
    No one talks about the proper way to go about these things! 😭😭

    Something tells me that Pugh has taken etiquette lessons because she does very specific things correctly (holding utensils the right way, the way she cut the chicken, resting utensils, putting the jam on top of the desert). ☺️
    But she did not want to come across as “uptight” so she was a little carefree for the video.
    I do not think etiquette makes someone uptight, but the majority of people nowadays do, unfortunately. Great video, Jamila!

    I think most of her little slips weren't actually her fault, she looked a little bit nervous and the people bringing the plates gave her just too much food to the point that it looks wasteful instead of abundant.

      @@JamilaMusayeva Is it rude to stack the plates on top of each other? I assumed people did it to help the waiter.

    • @charliegreen6023
      @charliegreen6023 Рік тому +5

      @@hypnoticelegance It depends on the setting (for context, I'm in the UK). People do this to help and in a place like a pub where drinks and food are served it is typically appreciated by the staff if you pass them your dishes/glasses (they smile and thank you). Although I would not advise stacking your plates even then, as it is not esthetically pleasing.
      However, in any setting that is more formal than that I would highly discourage trying to help. I have worked part time when still a student in a number of restaurants and Oxbridge university colleges during formal dinners (black and white tie included) and the best you can do to help and show respect to the serving staff is to not to move at all and clearly signal to the staff what you expect them to do using your cutlery (if you don't, they will never ask, as interrupting your conversation with friends would be very rude, they'll just leave your plate with you until the signal is there).
      The staff collect plates and glasses in certain order - bread plates and cutlery, starter plates and cutlery and so on, in the order they were brought to you. Imagine being a member of staff coming to collect large heavy plates and someone stacks a small bread plate with a slippery knife and some bread leftovers in between them, making your heavy stack dangerously unstable (even three pieces of high quality main course plates are quite heavy) and risking it all falling down. The staff member has to then stop collecting plates and make their way to the kitchen where they get rid of the unstable stack and come back again, which I promise you causes much frustration in the hectic environment of a restaurant. They would not want to cause any accident while collecting the plates not water time going back and forth between the dingo room and the kitchens.
      Thus, the most helpful and considerate of you would be to take note of your surroundings (advisable in all situations) so that you are aware that the staff is coming to collect plates/glasses and then sit quite calmly, continuing your conversation with friends without exaggerated hand gestures (you might knock the plate out of the server's hand) and remembering to thank the staff once they've taken away your plate/glass. In addition, you might notice that the food is always served from one side and plates collected from the other.
      I realise people might worry that it might be perceived as somewhat aloof to just sit and wait to be served, but I promise you it is not seen as such. Quite a contrary. There is much frustration when people help, especially among the less experienced staff, who are mortified at the prospect of dropping something and making a mess and who are very grateful to the guests who know how to cooperate and make their work easy and predictable. What happens behind your back is a fine tuned "dance" of people who know what and how to do their work and do it gracefully and efficiently. Hope that helps.

    Love your channel! Wish everyone was educated on the 12 -6 cutlery rule. I can’t tell you how many times I have witnessed wait staff asking if there was anything wrong with the meal or if the person is indeed finished, even at elegant restaurants. This is far too personal especially in the company of others. The person could be feeling unwell or dislike the meal or be on a diet. In any case you should not have to discuss how much or how little you have eaten with the table and the wait staff. Cutlery provides a subtle, but clear and final way to communicate you no longer wish to continue the meal. These rules are not arbitrary, they exist for a reason.

I don't normally comment on videos however, I wanted to suggest a new idea for a video. There are tutorials on how to compose oneself at dinner parties once arrived but not much on the logistics of hosting a dinner party or any other formal or informal meal gathering i.e. brunch, afternoon tea, lunch etc. What I want to know is how to plan, curate, and prepare a party from beginning to end ex. How many people to invite? Accounting for plus ones? How to invite someone? Seat planning? meal planning? Table setting theme? and so on.
    Good day,
    Eden

    Hi Jamila, thank u very much for these type of videos, your impressions and comments are very helpful. Just a question... so in continental eating... would the fok always be upsidedown? Or this would depend on the meal? What if we are eating something like rice. Also when we finish eating... and we rest our cutlery in the 12'hr position... I normally leave the fork... how could I explain... in the "normal" position (I mean in the same position as when it was resting on the left side before starting the meal) but I noticed in this video you put the cutlery on the plate with the fork upsidedown. Is this the only way or both ways of the fork are correct?
    Could u please let me know which of your videos to watch for this, please? I am confused on how to use the fork while eating with continental, thought fork could go in any of the ways? Upside down or in the normal position? But I think Im wrong? Im confused 😅 THANK YOU!

    For the most part You can tell if the food is bad or slightly off by smelling it before you eat, it prevents you from getting sick . In some places its good to smell your food because, if the food has gone bad in any way , you wouldn’t want to eat and get sick. If your not sure that something is safe to eat its better to be safe then sorry. I personally don’t have this habit but I wish I did it’s smart. Because food poisoning is not fun.

    • @rosannashe6313
      @rosannashe6313 5 місяців тому

      I disagree. If food has gone off you will be able to catch the scent as you approach your plate or fork and do not need to raise it to your nose like a blood hound on a trail. It's rare to be served food that has gone off and generally you should avoid eating at such places. Additionally most cases of "food poisoning" are from microbes that are not going to show up in scent like e coli or salmonella.

    2 skills I gained from your lesson.
    1) The cut of a Chicken Breast. ( Very smart & Tidy)
    2) The cutting of the cake.
    I want to share my experience at a Italian/Greek restaurant.
    I ordered King Prawn ( Starter)
    Came a long with Houmess, Fresh Cream or Cheese with bread.
    (Main) Salmon served with Rice, Variety of salad and fries.
    The fresh cream or cheese is the starter to the main course because the taste is 10 out of 10.
    Try it out if you haven't really delicious. ( Fresh Cream or Cheese). It's packed with lots of ingredients, have to taste it properly.
    The drink was served, non alcoholic drink, the drink name I can't say because I don't know. However wine taster would really love to try it because it is the rape of wine. ( It is not wine).
    I will be discovering more of the Greek, Italian culture & food and soon discover the Azerbaijan traditional food & culture as advertised by you.
    Broaden the knowledge.
    Good Day Jamila.

    Nobody would consider it rude in the UK, as someone who grew up around my parents restaurant, it was very common to see both elderly and young contumers request their tea with biscuits. Point is, I feel like some etiquette rules are universal while some are very cultural

    I often get a good laugh at actors portraying rich / upper class people and holding their eating utensils incorrectly, esp the claw grip on a fork while sawing their protein with a knife. One would think that movie producers / directors would give their actors lessons on how to hold their eating utensils. The producers / directors prob also don't know how to do it. They also close their teeth against the fork instead using their lips.
