Before I went into surgery my surgeon asked me if I would like to pray with him before we went into the operating room - I thought that was awesome - I really had a positive mindset.

I’ve been living with a broken neck for 2 1/2 months now. I couldn’t take the severe pain anymore and went to the ER 2 days ago. That’s when I found out that my neck was broken. I’ll be facing surgery soon. I think that was terrific that you had a prayer warrior right there with you. Hope you’re doing well.

Agree with you. Going into op must have anything question wise on your mind answered go in positive happy looking forward to it & seeing all going well working out for your highest good. Love the way Dr. here thinks/understand's/explains easily/simply we need more people in the world like this "empathy" so important. I have just had TKR home now 11th day couldn't be happier. Great positive start to end stay in hospital (Nursing care/treat 10/10) as fully believe had best Orthopaedic Surgeon I could trust have confidence, Anaesthetist (who was Surgeon's Bro 😅) & very good Team who were kind understanding & patient with me as wasn't having anything done till happy way all done 😅 loved them all thank them from the bottom of my heart forever as know this 💯% good job means so much to me. This is life changer for better life for me that was lacking as couldn't stand up straight limping tiring & I have always been active. I always go into surgery with a good frame of mind, I laugh and joke around with the team and try to make them laugh and they me. I always wake up in a very peaceful mindset. I’m due to have a Total Knee Replacement next week, yes I’m afraid because of the pain, but I know the surgeon will do his best.

In July, when I broke my femur, the anesthesiologist was absolutely incredible about explaining everything thing that was going to happen when I went in to surgery. He was amazing & really was a blessing to me & made me so comfortable about it all. I went in to surgery feeling so thankful that they were going to fix my leg & get me to the recovery process.

I had my gallbladder removed almost a year ago. I was told it was badly infected along with all the surrounding organs. After seeing drainage from the incisions a nurse called an ambulance to get me back to the hospital. Apparently I had pockets of infection in my right lung that they drained with a tube. I didn’t have confidence in the surgeon. After waiting 4-5 hours in preop, I was so full of anxiety my mindset was that it would go badly. I’m grateful to have found your video, because I’m in terrible pain again and my abdomen is swollen. I’m considering going into the emergency room. If I need another surgery, I’ll do my best to follow your advice. Thanks very much 😊

I just had a combo surgery, a colonoscopy/hemorroidectomy. My surgery ended up 2 hours late. I was really wound type. I asked for something to calm me. I was given just a tiny bit because I had to be moved from my bed onto the operating table. They took me in. It felt rushed. I felt so nervous. Not once did anyone ask if I was feeling okay. Not one person spoke one soothing word. I have had many surgeries and never experienced anything like this. The anesthesiologist always came and spoke soothing words and walked me through each step. The one I had came up and lifted my head up and pushed the pillow up under my neck and came at me with the mask. She wasnt paying attention as she managed to stick me in the eye. I came to crying in recovery something that I had never before. They knew I had sleep apnea and would keep poking with their finger telling to breath. Worst experience I ever had. It only got worse when they took out of recovery. Now I have ptsd and have nightmares. Thankfully the recovery was not as bad as everyone kept telling me.

I've had a number of procedures, and have always gone in positive- almost happy (not for having surgery, but for the necessity, and looking forward to the relief after), and I ask some questions, and pay attention when both the surgeon and anesthesia come and see me before surgery. I ask about what they plan- I have an obstructed airway, and have had an LMA, or full intubation. I approach it as a team effort.

I’ve had several surgeries & always went in with a calm attitude because I have absolute trust in God so I know He has a plan which may not be the same as mine! I had a very negative experience with a lung biopsy because I was not fully under! I could see the monitors, hear everything & felt like I was being suffocated by the tube but I couldn’t move or speak but I took it as a learning experience!! I did inform my doctor, at first he didn’t believe me until I told him things him & the nurses said!

Always great information. Going in for my 17th surgery under general anesthesia. I metally prepare for surgery by: 1) asking the anesthesiologist what drugs I will be receiving, when and why. 2) "Enjoying" the euphoric effects of secation in prep, hosting a comedy routine - establishing a positive atmosphere wtih myself and the team. 3) Knowing the specifics of mue surgery. 4) Interacting positively with the operating room staff. Finally and perhaps most importantly 5) realizing I have no control throughout the entire process. Trusting all involved our professionals and will do their utmost to enure a positive outcome.
To date, I've never felt tramutized by the surgerical process and have had positive results in all of them.

I’m going under the knife again in a couple of weeks. Just a minor surgery but it involves a biopsy. My blood work looks pretty good so my fear level should be low, but since my sister died of cancer. I have a real fear of the disease. I keep reminding myself that the type of cancer is different and the times are different. Some of the fear is probably subconscious. I was eight when she got sick and 12 when she died. I kind of felt like cancer stole my best friend. I have a wonderful husband and he will be there for me. I also have two great kids of my own and 27 cute second graders who adore their teacher. I will be fine 😊.

I was a five hr case, lung neuroendocrine segmentectomy. I was asked by anesthesiologist what I was going to dream about; I'm going on a nice horseback ride through the countryside. A nurse reached out and held my left hand and I knew that was my mom's spirit, who had trained and worked at this same hospital that I too wished to train at before program closed on 70s. I have zip eyesight without glasses so I can't see anything nor who is speaking unless I've spoken with them before. It really is a mind set. You must put your trust in their hands. I will need another resection, my surgeon has moved, but I'll dream again of another ride and give my trust to others.

I am telling myself "Deana, you did just fine during the heart Cath with the sedation. It's going to be fine. Everyone knows their job and does it well. Relax, take slow, deep breaths. You will feel better once your aortic valve is replaced. Your exercise tolerance will gradually improve!!" So I will be fine. I been waiting for this for seven months... I have had two surgeries this past year. My surgeon is very well known and did both surgeries. Both times I felt everyone was so rushed! I never saw either anesthesiologist only heard their voice. I was of course very anxious, the second surgery I woke up with a very sore throat, when he nurse asked how I was feeling I told her, she totally ignored me. I later figured out it was the tube and it did go away. Medical people I have dealt with all seem so rushed and God forbid patients don’t react “normally “ after surgery. My veins collapse very easily which of course affects the IV’s. They al aye act like it is my fault and I can control that!! I wish more medical personnel had your compassion!! Why don’t they? I was always under the assumption they got into the field to help people!! Thanks for what you do!!

I have a perseverance for Harry Potter and Dog Shows. But, going back to the Proverb of The Willow Tree and The Oak Tree, have you ever heard of The Whomping Willow in Harry Potter? I think The Oak Tree is an analogy for Harry Potter’s godfather, Sirius Black. Sirius has a really strong moral character and a really strong moral compass of what is Good and Evil. The Whomping Willow is a tree that will get you, by moving around wildly, even when there’s no wind. Sirius Black doesn’t let things get to him, and is a very wise and easygoing character. But, when he’s in Survival Mode, it someone is threatening him or the people he loves, his mind is, almost like a Jack-in-the-Box. But Sirius nonchalantly takes care of the threats, and never lets anything rattle him! And for my Dental Procedure under General Anesthesia in 3 Months, August 7, to be precise, I will be like Sirius Black, and not let anything rattle me!

I had a wedge resection on my left lung last week. I was not worried about the surgery, I was worried about what my doctor was going to find. He couldn't tell me if it was cancer before surgery, but I suspected it was because I've been loosing weight. It was. The surgery went well. When I woke up in pacu the area around a IV was hurting. I told nurses. They told me it wasn't IV. They blamed the anesthesiaoligist. Telling me it was from the way she had me positioned for the surgery. It was still hurting the next morning. I was still in the pacu because there was no beds available in the hospital for me. When I complained again about my arm hurting the nurses stuckck with the IV was not causing the pain it was the anesthesiaoligist fault. The anesthesiaoligist did not put the IV in, a nurse in pre-op did. I told them to take it out. When I was discharged it was still hurting. Later that night my arm from my wrist to my elbow was swollen and hurting like hell. I went to the ER. Like suspected the IV the nurse put in was to blame, not the anesthesiaoligist fault. They told me the IV had irritated and inflamed the veins in my arm, and gave me rxs for a antibiotic and a pain killer. That was a couple days ago. My arm is lot better than it was, but still bothering me a little.

TRUE PAST EXPERIENCE: I was looking forward to being put out via anesthesia (due to extreme fatigue), not all scared of the lithotripsy I've had before a few times. The anesthesia man, however, pressed the mask on my face...catching my nose so hard that I couldn't inhale anything...oxygen OR anesthesia!!!! I began to struggle to move it to center it or even alert what was happening, but was held down even more!!! THIS WAS A NIGHTMARE in real life! The doctor finally (mercifully), instructed somebody to my other side to give me an injection, and 'that' put me out! PRAISE GOD!!! Guess what? I have a new kidney stone needing attention shortly...and I'm really REALLY panicking about this possible repeat of being ignored during a 'table' crisis! I do intend discussing this with the doctor, but who knows if my message will reach the appropriate people. This is going to be rough on me until the procedure (which may be open surgery this time), is over.

Sorry I missed the livestream. I wish I had seen some of your videos before my surgery last year! I like how you explained concepts behind the best pre-surgery mindsets. I tried my best going into the hospital with a positive mindset!
But. I didn't ask any questions to the anesthesiologist, and just one silly question to the surgeon in the OR. Just before I was about to go under, I remember hearing both the anesthesiologist AND the surgeon asking me "Are you OKAY?" And the best I could mumble out loud was "I KNOW I'm going to be okay." In the end the surgery did go well.

I am 58 and a nurse myself, and it is with hindsight I say this. I take care of patients post operative and tell them in pre op to please have positive thoughts as I believe positive feelings and thoughts are key after anesthesia ❤ Thanks for addressing this subject Doc

Had 2 surgeries, about month apart. Broke wrist, put plate & screws in. Screws have minds of their own, backing out. Back to remove, now hanging out w/o anything on hand - feels so weird!! Tiny numbness at base of hand, hoping feeling returns. OT next week. I understand about hardware loosening. Sucks!! Anesthesia, put gas mask on, woke up in OR. Freaky yet 0 pain. Was over, but under Bright lights, yikes!! Perhaps no recovery room available. All good. Thx Dr. K! The best. Come to MN.

I have had “broken brain” when I go in for General Anesthesia all the time! I am also on The Autism Spectrum, and am hypersensitive. But, as an Adult, I know that I should be able to control those emotions. But, it is extremely hard, even though I have been under General Anesthesia way too many times in my life to count. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the fact that I am on The Autism Spectrum that makes my brain more apt to snap. I don’t know.

Why is OR so cold? I like it because I'm hot blooded. Is it to keep doctor's awake? How can I ask for prayer, not knowing what the doctor and staff believe? Why after coming to, I talk way too much? How do I stop it on future times? I had rotary cuff surgery and would not stop talking afterwards. Nurse told me to shut up, felt bad but couldn't help it.

Oh the off gassing from the body after 3 -4 days for major surgery and it is really smelly. I stopped counting my surgeries after 27, had a few more since then and a major one coming up. Can’t wait to be very smelly again and around the fourth/ 5 th day I get the blues then it gets better. Maybe some don’t know that anesthesia ( general) can cause that so please note it and if it gets worse to talk to your doctor right away.😊

    QUESTION!!!
I had a minor back surgery a couple of months ago, and now I have a major "screws and rods" back surgery coming up in a month. After the last surgery, I spent the next couple of weeks in the deepest, darkest depression I've ever experienced. I've had several surgeries and have never experienced anything like that.
Is there a medicine the anesthesiologist uses that could cause that? I want to make sure that doesn't happen again. It was awful.
I don't think it was my attitude going into surgery.

Can you describe the use of fentanyl in surgery and recovery. I had it used in a recent surgery. It was one of the worse experiences I have ever had. The hallucinations were terrible. I vividly remember three places I went. One was just a block from the hospital in a bldg that doesn’t exist, another 100 miles south. And then one a hundred miles north of hosp, and this facility doesn’t exsist. This whole time I never left the floor of the hospital where I went post-op.

    • @mhenderson9311
      @mhenderson9311 Місяць тому

Same here as well, I’d like to know from Dr. Kaveh what happens when fentanyl is used in surgery. Imagine that I had fentanyl, as for certain a strong opioid painkiller would have been needed based on what I've learned online. What I did manage to find online, is that fentanyl first fills up your pain receptors, then fills up your dopamine and serotonin receptors. No hallucinations to remember here, the only thing I knew was that "something weird” was going on inside my brain.

I was sick as a dog and I feel they could have sent an Rx to my pharmacy for anti nausea. I barfed fight in front of the nurse. P.S: A had two surgeries for gall bladder and subsequent bile removal and the 2nd doctor was checking on me and was kind enough to help me out that way. Barfed in front of him, he got the bedpan to me just in time.

Specific drugs can cause an exasperation to initiate full blown anaphylaxis, please watch the video and I think it will help. I talked to my anesthesiologist prior to my last procedure and she did a second take I think because I was so well informed.
