Hydrographics 101: An Easy Step-by-Step Guide on How to Apply Hydrographics

  • Hydrographics is the application of a pattern piece of art (film) onto an object in order to customize it, or change its character. Unless you are paying a premium, the “wood” or “carbon fiber” in your car is created by this process as is the camouflaged guns and ATVs you see out in the wild. This application method is decades old, and requires 5 basic ingredients: paint, hydrographic film, water, activator, and a protective clear coat.
    In summary the part is first painted, (most hydrographic film is semi-transparent, and the base coat influences the overall finished look). The film is then floated on the surface of warm water for a minute or two in order to soften the PVA backing. The upper-facing surface of the film is then sprayed with a hydrographic activator, which turns the film into a liquid. The painted part is then slowly lowered into the film, and the paint chemically bonds to the liquid film, leaving the part “painted” in the design of the film.
    Once “dipped”, the part is the gently rinsed in water to remove any excess PVA, and allowed to dry on a rack. Once fully dry, the part is then clear coated for UV and general wear and tear protection, but also to give an array of gloss levels, from wet-look gloss down to a matte clear.

    Great Video! Have question, I know you sanded the part before painting. What grit do you sand with, afterwards when you painted the controller is there no need to sand the painted controller before dipping. Thanks in advance🙂

      we usually use a light gray Scotch Pad (extra fine) for scuffing. This provides enough 'key' for paint. Correct, no need to scuff before dipping. OHW has a long dip 'window'

    I got question . If i open a shop ,
    How often should i change the water?
    Is it really necessary to paint the part before dipping ??
    What paint to use on !!!
    Glossy or matte !!!
    And about raising, why does the water look like its a soapy water ...
    Please answer all my questions please ...

    • @OHWPaint

      Hi LWL - we recommend One Hit Wonder base paint (yes you need to paint the part so the film has something to adhere to). The gloss level depends on personal preference and is determined by the clear coat. The water is not soapy it is most likely the PVA from the film/activator reaction. You do can clean the water of film residue with a fishnet from an aquarium store. Hope that helps.

    Do I need to paint the shell if my controller is white already and I want it white under the hydro film?

    • @OHWPaint
      @OHWPaint  5 років тому +1

      Hi Josh - great question. You will need to paint the controller as the film needs to "stick" to the paint and will not adhere direct to the substrate. Hope that helps!

    • @OHWPaint
      @OHWPaint  3 роки тому

      simply rinse and dry. If there are any "globs" of film, sand smooth with warm soapy water. then dry, and paint directly over. No need to strip the part. paint right over the film.
