    So Matt, I live in SC on the Georgia border, I own 69 acres, lived here 24 years. All I can say is Mother Nature is relentless. Learn from my mistakes, BUY A TRACTOR (LS brand 32 HP four wheel drive), the bigger the better with a Brush-hog. Then add implements as you go. Yes you will need a Barn to store it! Wish someone like me had told me this 24 years ago! Oh yeah, it's paid off, and I sleep well at night! You kids are Living Large! You just don't know how large yet! Oh Yeah I would name the mower "Metro" because it really can't get the job done! You Kids still ROCK!

    Matt, my friend you NEED a tractor with some implements - a brush hog, a front end loader, a plow, a disc, etc.

      M is a hard worker but he is only one person for the whole property, and the time is a commodity. Bigger tractor with a brush hog will do the work in a few hours, while with smaller tractors it will take days, and in meantime they will keep breaking. They are made for landscaped gardens not jungle. Complete waste of time and money.

    Iguanas love to decimate gardens. Anything with bright blossoms or fruit/vegetables will be consumed. Iguanas will also burrow under any concrete pad or structure to build nests. One female can lay up to 70 eggs at a time. They are invasive because they are not part of the natural ecosystem, they have no natural predators in PR so they decimate some plants and native birds (they rob nests for eggs). Matt, your "we're all invasive spiel is correct and humans are the most destructive invasive species. That doesn't mean we should embrace destructive pests like iguanas. Consider the native plants, birds and other species who have no defense against iguanas. Good luck with any fruit/vegetable gardens if you are unwilling to deal with the chickens of the jungle. Greetings from Costa Rica where iguana are native.

    I would agree with Philip. Matt, Matt. You need to seriously consider a mid size tractor with a PTO drive. So you can gradually get different attachments. You have 8 acres in a jungle. Your life will be a whole lot easier and you're not going anywhere. It's an investment. They last forever if you maintain them. I bought a used New Holland with a front load bucket, tiller attachment, bush hog attachment, and just got a small backhoe attachment. Wow, I should have done this years ago. I'm sure you already know this though. You could have done all that work, in half the time. Peace, 🙏

    Someone suggested the name Moe for the mower, which I find fitting. As for the equipment, consider purchasing a tractor. Using your mower as a Bush Hog will likely lead to its premature destruction. A tractor-mounted bush hog can handle tougher tasks like cutting down small trees and bamboo. Tractors, such as my 1973 Massey Ferguson 135, are built to last and require only occasional maintenance. Many also recommend a front bucket attachment; it's a valuable addition you won't regret. Without it, you might find yourself in the same predicament as with the undersized mower.

    For preventing iguana eating pumpkin, fence off the pumpkin plants you want to save, and plant a few pumpkins around on the outside of the fence. This will act as a buffer zone, or plant hardy plants on the outside fence, plants that are not appreciated by iguanas, maybe pineapple plants, just an idea.

    Yes you get what you get unless they are heirloom varieties or open pollinated varieties that will not cross pollinate with other varieties but the seeds for next season if you save them will be the ones that you don't know what you will get the next season if that makes any sense to you. Hope that helps you. Am 71 and been gardening my whole life much. Learn by your mistakes and remember to learn from people in your area what grows best for that climate. Maybe join a Puerto Rico gardening group to learn more. I have lived in SC, Georgia, Colorado and now back to my home state of Maine and learn something new everyday. Much love and good luck. Oh and one other thing is to save all your clippings and make a compost pile which once broken down will make great garden fertilizers for your gardens,,fruits trees or whatever.

    Matt, I have a zero turn (John Deere Z425) and I use it for a lot of things. One big thing is hauling or moving stuff. Add a small deck (platform) on the front of your zero turn (Like a piece of thick plywood bolted to the frame) and you can move large rocks, bricks, lumber, bags of concrete, and brush... and all kinds of other stuff with it. In dry conditions of course. These things suck on slick ground. You can drag stuff with it. You can even push stuff with it, maybe add a blade to the front of it for lite bulldozing. You can use it to transmit hydraulic fluid to a hydraulic motor somewhere else (Just like a PTO) if you know how to tap into the hydraulic system that drives it. I'm assuming it's hydrostatic drive and not belt driven. If it's got a belt for the blades and another belt for the transmission then it's not hydrostatic (Hydraulic). Think out of the box and you can use that mower to do a lot more than what you're using it for now.

    Matt. Several people are suggesting that you buy a tractor to work the land with...&. different implements and attachments, etc to make work easier. This is a very good idea, however, the area you're in is wet ALL THE TIME so you might want to think about getting a large wheeled or tracked vehicle instead of a small wheeled vehicle so you don't get stuck all the time. Also, the heavier the machine & smaller it's footprint, the easier it is to get stuck. Something else you could do for your land where it's slick is to spread mulch or rock. Give you some traction. Keep up the good work.

    For reliable, steady water pressure, (even when the power goes out) build yourself a water tower six to 10 feet higher than your faucets and shower. Put a water tank on top of it. Make sure it's got a roof to keep the sun off of it. Chlorinate it accordingly to make it potable. Use your pumps to fill the water tower. If your pumps don't have enough head pressure to get water up that high, just fill it in stages, that is, fill water up to a halfway point tank, and then, with another pump to the top tank. Using the force of gravity you will always have a steady reliable water pressure even if the power goes out.

It "kinda" worked but it was very hard on my little mower. Turned out to be a losing battle. Eventually I was able to afford a sub-compact 39hp Kubota 4x4 tractor and picked up a few accessories for it: forklift and 4-in-1 bucket accessories for the Front Loader, and a Finish Mower and Tiller for the rear PTO . I also paid extra to get a model with an air conditioned cab. Fast forward 12 years and I can honestly say it was one of the best tools I've ever bought. It made numerous jobs so much easier. Cross-pollinating different varieties of pumpkins can result in the creation of new and unique pumpkin varieties. This happens when the pollen from one pumpkin variety is transferred to the flower of another variety, either naturally by insects or through hand-pollination. The seeds produced from this cross will have genetic characteristics from both parent plants12.
    However, it’s important to note that the fruit that grows in the current season will not be affected by the cross-pollination. The fruit’s appearance and taste will be determined by the seed it was planted from. It’s only the next generation, grown from the seeds resulting from the cross, that will potentially show traits from both parent varieties2.
    If you’re looking to experiment with pumpkin cross-pollination, you might want to consider isolating the flowers to control the pollination process. This can be done using pollination bags or by manually transferring pollen from one flower to another. Keep in mind that pumpkins are part of the Cucurbita genus, and varieties within the same botanical species can cross-pollinate, while varieties from different species generally do not3.
    For gardeners interested in saving seeds and growing unique pumpkin varieties, cross-pollination can be an exciting way to explore new possibilities in their gardens.

    Tractor solution, buy in the states and ship in small shipping container which is probably cheaper. If you get attachments it just makes it even cheaper shipping all together. Things to buy as package deal, compact tractor and some attachments, brush hog, forks, box blade could be easy welding project (used for grading and smoothing over time), mower deck, plow (use cuttings, scrap food, prettymuch anything to till into that clay so it can transform the clay intogreat soil). You can even build a trailer so you can move stuff around by truck or tractor. The tractor doesn't have to even be new, just run and some fixes.

Watching you two set up the pumpkin patch had me thinking about some of the other homesteading channels I watch, I'd recommend checking out some of @LivingTraditionsHomestead videos. They do a lot with using and re-using the garden fabric and have a lot of tips and tricks to making it work for you - i.e. burning holes for the plants through the fabric instead of cutting/ripping to minimize weed growth and having the fabric last longer. Keep up the hard work, looking forward to the jungle house you two have in the future!

    Not to add a distraction but have you tried gold panning it that creek/stream? In your video we see A glimpse of what seems like mineralized bedrock and bolders in that creek. If so, it may be ideal for crevicing for flood gold.

    I grow pumpkins. Pumpkins send out a lot of vines with roots. Too much mesh will keep the new roots from getting to the dirt, The pumpkins need these new shoots for added growing. I would cut back the mesh big time. No one in the pumpkin grower family use any mesh as it stops the new roots from going down. Also dont let water stand on the leaves . more sun the better and dont let water stay in puddles.

    Hey guys, just as a recomendación. I have some things that are more less similar to your growing needs. I have pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and other things that are similar to your needs. But you have to look out of iguanas !!! Specially with the pumpkin. They eat the flower and that is buy buy pumpkin!. So for most of you crops just look over this matter. We had this problem. And had to take care of it .

  • @07bently
    @07bently 6 місяців тому +7

    I think that the problem with green iguanas is what you mentioned combined with the Millions of them in its population and that every single egg producing green iguana will lay around 70 eggs a year today there are more green iguanas in PR than there are people so you can imagine how quickly their population will continue to grow they could someday destroy all vegetation do to lack of food

    • @monstermashed6266
      @monstermashed6266 6 місяців тому +2

      Very true in their native country green iguanas are bordered by more land and they are part of the menu PR's bordered by water so space is limited and much of the vegetation is people food as well. I left PR in 1979 for work and at that time if you wanted a green iguana as a pet you needed to go to a pet shop as there were none in the wild

    DR makes a powerful brush hog. There other makers that have multiple attachments. My old Gravely was powerful and had useful attachments. For your more er, I suggest chains and keeping the blades sharp. Have several sets of blades for a quick swap. If your belt breaks, your blades are dull. The belt breaks to prevent something expensive from breaking.

    Matt, they do make a scaled to fit tractor style tread tire for zero turn mowers like yours. Hard to describe without pictures but just think of the tread pattern on large farm tractors that have much more bite than lawn care tires do. The only down side is they do leave tracks but for working and doing what you're attempting to do they'd be a definite improvement. You could buy two different sets of rims and tires for your mower depending on what you're doing. They aren't difficult to change at all, floor jack, impact and socket are all you need. I know these videos are not real time but if you see this and haven't considered it, it could be an option.
    Although I know you and your lovely wife balk at spending the money, a small tractor with bucket/front loader, backhoe, 3 point hitch deck mower and other 3 point mount hydraulic attachments would be invaluable to you with all the work you have coming and for maintaining the property. Something in the 50 to 75 horse range would be powerful and small enough to fit your needs, think something like the old Ford 9N, the newer equivalents have many more attachments. They're not cheap however but I'm sure it would pay for itself in time saved. Something I know you're already considering I'd be willing to bet? Being older I can tell you sometimes when we think we are being frugal and saving money it ends up costing us much more in the long run. The time savings alone are worth it as we all only have so much time on this earth and it is but vapor compared to eternity.
    Take care and God Bless...

    Another great video guy's. Why don't you build a small pump house around your fresh water supply and then you won't have to worry about the mud and debris getting into the water supply. Just a thought. A name for your lawnmower if it hasn't already been said is the big banana machine. Love how you guy's have tamed the cats and iguana's. All your kitty's are so full of life and love. That is so great to see. The iguanas are getting really tame. Getting the to eat out of your hands is absolutely amazing. I didn't get a chance ladt time, so congratulations on your marriage. If you don't build a secure garden, you won't have a garden. That includes netting on top because they can climb over the fence. My cats have destroyed my garden and they didn't even eat anything. Iguanas want to eat EVERYTHING you grow.

    But I guess check out flail mower attachments for skid steers. Even an old john deere 110 tlb could use a brush hound skid steer flail mower. Having both the 110 with front bucket and rear excavator arm would help yall, plus the ability to remove the front bucket to put on a brushhound flail attachment would give you all your machinery needs on that property..
