Awesome chisel work...
Thank you! Those are Millers falls wood chisels that I picked up at a garage sale for five bucks for a whole set. That was a great deal!
Habt Ihr wieder super gemacht👍👍😊
Watching from Africa Uganda God bless you
I said "The Boss is back in control" and Mine quickly corrected me. " A strong woman like that doesn't have to be there to be in control", said my Boss
LOL she must have been talking to Yvonne.🤣
it's getting pretty green out there!
Trees have exploded in the past 2 weeks. A few strains of mesquite are late bloomers and won't leave out for a few more weeks.
Armchair quarterback here. We learned on multifamily applications when the old patio sliding doors faded out of usage, and double French doors become popular... that with a mostly unprotected doorway, unless you used "open out" swinging doors, that blowing rains often caused leaks under the door/over the threshold, and onto the apartment floor.
The "out swinging" doors allowed a threshold profile with a slight vertical "wall" for the door to close against...stopping any water penetration.
Maybe I'm over thinking this, since you're in the desert....but monsoons do blow in. As you guys know all too well. Great job hanging that door!!
I originally wanted outswing doors, but they were special order only and there was no way we were going to shell out the cash for that. But one reason we wanted the inswing was because of the high winds we have. The doors swinging outward would have a greater chance of being blown around and either slamming shut, open, or being damaged. Our typical winds blown in from the southwest and the doors are on the east side of the house so with luck, the doors will be somewhat protected by that fact as well as that they are inset 12 inches in the bucking. There is also a 24" overhang over the doors. Once the back deck is built ( if the lumber prices ever come down) we will probably have a pergola over the deck as well for shade which should add some weather protection too. It would be nice to have the option of keeping those doors open even during less than optimal weather.
Awesome job! One thing to think about. Our tile was installed professionally. They made the tile so darn high that there is not enough clearance for a rug in front of the main door. Not cool! During monsoon, we like having a rug by the door to catch the drips, and the rest of the year, it really helps to take off the dirt. We make it work, but if you want a rug, be sure to leave enough room for one. Have a great week!
I appreciate the tip! Thanks for watching and have a great week ahead 👍
fun watching you build your dream. Love the inlaid blinds.
Love you guys,
❤️🙏
Bill this is a lovely lovely job. Neat and precise looking you should be really happy and proud of this. I noticed the blinds before you worked them and thought to myself. Okay. am I missing something? I mean the poor folks are going to have to run outside, crank the blinds and then go back inside. LOL. New one on me! Remote control blinds or whatever they are called. I liked the lovely couple's (kiss) welcome when you met in the doorway. Very nice touch. Also smart use of that tie down strap with the ratchet to do a repair job. One of your best vids Bill. Way to go guys!
I especially like how Yvonne wiped her mouth after kissing me. 🤣 She always complains that my moustache "holds moisture"😂 Venetian blinds are a great way to control light, but are impossible to clean or keep clean. These built in blinds should hopefully solve this problem. Have a great weekend Don!
@@theupsideofdownsizing just 20 minutes before I watched your vid I was at Home Depot in Tucson playing with the same doors+blinds setup and thinking to myself, this is what we need in AZ, where the state color is Dirt On Everything.
Nice job. I love them
Another awesome vid
Well done
Great job.
Thank you!👍
Looks great!
Excellent door work.
Interesting chisel work at 13:15.
I have by habit, reversed my tool at that task, to better control depth of cut.
Agreed, that is a good way of preventing accidents with the chisel. Because of the awkward position, I was going VERY SLOW, realizing that I had but one shot at getting it right. Old man mode kicked in....😉 BTW, thanks for the idea about the thermal curtain. It's been stored away in my long term memory bank for possible future use in the clerestory.👍
Oh no, Bill is taking names!
I dig the idea of the "Truth window" for those skeptics lol.
I've been rethinking the truth window. I might go with a ships porthole if I can find a nice one at a reasonable price.
I first saw one at Bob and Karen's home in Bisbee. Nice touch.
@@theupsideofdownsizing That'd be a great idea.
Awesome doors. Love the included blinds idea.
Happiness is NOT having to clean Venetian Blinds! 😉
Wooow
Looks gr8t
Well done.
The French doors install looks to have gone well! One step closer! 👍🏼
Really well made video. I had similar interior blind doors (Pella) on a home. The "never having to dust miniblinds" on a door well worth the extra $ 100-200. Happy wife happy life Bill : )
Thanks David. I've seen my fair share of nasty blinds and we agree that the extra 100 bucks was well worth it.
French doors and double doors are always harder to install than single hung doors. But you guys did a great job. One tip for the threshold is subflooring adhesive under it instead of silicone. I have had the French doors want to migrate around with use. Some of the brands have set screws for the floor some dont. But you can drill some and attach it directly to you floor. Also on the door that is going to get the most use I attach it directly to the jam and shim the other side. This helps later down the road. But you jam has to be plumb for sure. Appericiate you guys.
Thanks for the tips. I actually did drill three holes in the threshold and screwed it down to the subfloor for extra security using panhead wood screws. And as it worked out the active door side which is the left side from the inside is pretty much flush up against the door bucking as you mentioned as well. Not by intent but that's the way it worked out. The subflooring adhesive is a good idea. I've never seen that done before,... next time. 👍
@@theupsideofdownsizing you bet.
Ok popcorn at the ready, large brandy and coke...this had better be good...i'll be marking outa 10..
Great work guys 9/10 i recon :DDD
I like the gentle foot adjustment, that was funny...a calibrated boot....
I've got to show a picture of my boots. The right boot has got a hole worn in the toe from kicking things 🤣
Great job as always👍🏼🇺🇸
That was neat to think of putting a glass and frame to show the straw Insulation. And of course your a great handyman, overcoming any obstacle with those french doors.
I wish the truth window was mine, but it's actually often found in straw bales homes. It's a cool idea for sure. I'm thinking of using a ships porthole as our truth window. Thanks for watching!
@@theupsideofdownsizing wow very rustic. Great idea.
I'm currently working on a skylight video myself, I have never seen those insulated with straw, would probably be way too complicated and heavy 😁
looks good! Your yard looks beautiful too :)
Thank you. It's so nice to have the trees with leaves on them again.
You can get plastic plugs for the screw holes if you desire a more finished look any way great job .
Thanks for watching! The door came with the plugs to fill those holes. I'm just waiting to put them in until we're ready to paint. I don't want to lose them.
@@theupsideofdownsizing that makes sense
I bet you are happy Yvonne is home so she can help you. It is looking great.
I'm just happy she's home. 😃
@@theupsideofdownsizing When that special someone is around all the time and then isn't for a while your left with a vacuum of empty space and it gets lonely.
Well done you guys they look fabulous x
Nice job done on those doors. Looks awesome! House is coming along really good. Stay safe and have a great week!
Thanks CB. Slowly but surely....Hope you and Rene are well. Have a great week!
👍
Congrats on getting the French doors installed!
Beautiful! It's all coming together nicely guys. I'm so excited for you.
❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎
The doors look good.
looks great and will keep the little friends out of the house/ thanks for sharing and have a great day as well. PS happy mothers day as well
Need some insulation around the door that'll fix it up!
Thanks for watching! I must have mumbled a little when I said that I did spray foam around the door.
Could you take a screw out of the hinge in the frame & run a longer screw that would go into the frame and eliminate screws on the outside that require finish work?
That's part of the installation I just didn't show it. The door comes with two 3-in matching screws which run through the top hinge into the door bucking.
Looking good! Glad the project is going so well.
Thanks for watching!
What is the reason for cutting away the underlayment before putting up the doors? I noticed you did the same before mounting the walls inside as well.
When we did it inside for the walls, it was so we could see where the floor joists were located, so that the sill plates could be screwed directly into the joists. This time, for the doors, I wanted to make sure that that flashing tape I installed was going to stick directly to the subfloor and not on to the underlayment.
Ah ok. Got it, thanx =)
If I may ask
Where did you get your gate from
The entrance to your property.
It was actually on the property when we bought it. I'm pretty sure Tractor Supply Company would have that same gate, or one that is very similar. We bought the latch from a small family business out of Texas. Thanks for watching!
Door with blinds in them, very booshie.
I agree, but the good part is they'll serve a purpose and stay clean at the same time.
Where did you find insurance for your straw home?
I guess I missed the cost of your septic as well.
Looking good dude.
We have no homeowners insurance for our Straw Bale home. In Cochise county, if you do the owner opt out, you cannot get homeowners insurance. I didn't give the price for the septic system during the video, because the installer asked me not to. Every step septic installation is different and as a result each cost estimate is going to be different. We paid about $3,200 for the complete system installed including permits and perc test holes.
You asked about improving channel regarding getting more viewers. Are you interested in live stock, if so that could help. Maybe build out door kitchen. Something to break up the house build
Thanks for your comments Danny! I agree, finding a way to add variety to the channel would greatly help. We like animals but we realize that livestock is not something that's going to happen until the house is done. And we do have plans for an outdoor kitchen, but somehow we think that might slow down our progress on the house itself. We've been living in this trailer now for over 2 years and we're ready to get into a house. So what we're going to try to do, is find small little projects to interject into the house build videos to add a bit of variety.
I can understand wanting to get out of the trailer, it would dive me nuts. Do you get involved with channels not in your area, maybe that could help. The house your building will be amazing once completed, and so far what I’ve seen your doing right. Maybe do some updates with your solar system. How your rain water collection is going. Just trying to help
Believe me, your suggestions are really appreciated! See, for example, it never crossed my mind to do an update on our solar system. That's a great idea and I will definitely be doing it. After being 100% solar for over a year, how our system has performed, and how we have made adjustments in our useage could be interesting and helpful to others thinking of going off grid solar. Thanks again for your support 👍
you should have more subscribers IDK why you have only 6k
Thanks for watching! We'll get there.....(I hope)
Bill, when you get completetly 'dried in,"' a "how to put up a straw bale tiny home" review video with a good title, click bait photo (not Bill taking an outdoor shower) would get you over 10k easily.
