From what I understand, the song is about the anxiety you feel when you fall in love, which is why she cant sleep. And she feels like something is physically wrong with her, so she asks the doctor about it, but he says he cant help, and says she is a lost case because of how crazy she is starting to feel. That could also be why you think her voice sounds kind of "tense". But yeah, the translation really doesnt do it right, for example instead of "my head and throat are tied in a knot that wont undo itself" it says "my head and throat are circling around that wont undo itself".

from the perspective of a trained vocalist I fully agree on her points about the vocals.
I think there still is plenty to be enjoyed about the performance
And the vocal quality in chorus might be a stylistic choice. But there were quite a few weak points in the performance both in terms of pitch and technique in general.
There is plenty of time to still work on it, and maybe she just had a bad day this one performance.
I hope we get to see her in the finale and she places well. Because I find the performance interesting, and she seems cool.
But the parts of the reaction that mentioned the technical aspect of vocals was pretty spot on from my perspective

Fun fact: the song has several rhythms (sometimes faster, sometimes slower) to simulate arrhythmias of the heart, because she feels anxious and without any control of her own heart that is quickly falling in love without warning. Also, I swear that in Portuguese the lyrics make a lot more sense and are much more fun and in line with the energy of the performance. The lyrics have some Portuguese expressions that lose some of their character when translated. Love from Portugal ❤️

I've come to really adore this one! It's such a *fun* song! I'm pretty sure she's singing about being lovesick, hence all the confusion and feeling sick and everything, and she's basically yelling at her heart to knock it off! It's very cabaret, it's very comical, and I absolutely love it and hope it does well. I don't think it's going to win, but there's a slim chance, and I'd be punching the air if it did!

The song title literally translates to "Oh, Heart" but the meaning in English would be something like "Oh My Heart" - she is talking to her heart and to her lover and wondering what to do next. 😁
Most Portuguese singers that were raised with fado music, seem to always tight their voice somehow, no matter the style they sing , even thought this is not fado at all. Btw, you should react one day to the fado style, for instance: Mariza, ó gente da minha terra, concerto ao vivo em Lisboa.

If you're interested, you can also check Mariza - Live In London (2004). Although I find the concert in Lisbon much better. You can choose either "Ó Gente da Minha Terra" or "Cavaleiro Monge". Also, I think you'd love Dulce Pontes "Canção do Mar". Mariza and Dulce are two of the greatest voices in the world. Please react once to fado for us. It's very peculiar, very unique. I totally agree about the tightness on the higher notes/the refrain, it sounds a little tense, but it goes with the lyrics.

Hello Georgina and thank you for your review. The song is about being in love and it's not just the music that is fun, there is also humor in the lyrics ofc. I would say there are parts lost in translation, but the essential thing to explain is that in Portuguese you can use heart obviously to identify the organ, but also has sweetheart. So whenever she is saying "Ai Coração", "it can be read as asking her own heart but also asking someone else, if that person's is hers. Hope that helps you with the meaning of the lyrics. 😊

I’m surprised you’re not keen. Normally I think you get these critiques really right. Not often I’d disagree but… personally I reckon Mimi Cat has one of the best songs , performances and live vocals in the whole competition. Top three for me. I suspect/hope it will grow on you very quickly. 😊

It’s a matter of taste. From What I ear from Georgina usually she doesn’t like music that bring tradicional elements. It’s her opinion and it’s just fine! We don’t have to like the same. 😊
I find she had the most versatile range this year. She goes everywhere with her voice. I'm not an expert though. This music really relies on her vocals and she's like an orchestra.
Out of all the songs this year this is the one I can't stop listening to. It stands out from all the rest in the best way.

It's about the anxiety and hardships of falling in love. The happiness of loving a person but not knowing if they love you. It's the gripping feeling of loving someone. It's quite beautiful and the song itself may be a top 10 contender and a personal winner
This is like a piece from a great Broadway musical, in that part where the actress-singer is at the peak of an anxiety attack, almost in despair, feeling hopelessly in love, losing control of herself (or) fearing not to be reciprocated in her passion! It's normal that the way she sings reflects this tension that she wants to pass on to those who are listening! *In an interview, Mimicat said: if the voice and theatricality conveys some anxiety, then everything is right!* It's good to activate the subtitles (they are according to the official translation). I think you missed it here the opportunity (perhaps because of the rush to finish the reactions) to fully enter and appreciate this work of art.

For me who speak portuguese (brazilian portuguese btw) and english, the translate is a bit off, Mimicat uses a lot of "instranslatable" terms, terms that have a meaning in the background, no just the translate. That said, I really liked the music, go Portugal

I think it's difficult for a person who has never felt true love and passion at the same time for someone, to understand the lyrics of the song... in my view, the lyrics, the music and the rhythm are completely magnificent... if you don't stay at least in the top 3 in the final... I end up thinking that the song festival is a fraud ... mimicat has everything that the song festival intends to convey

3:00 - so to help you understand the translation is a bit garbage this coming from a portuguese especially about the chorus part.
When she says ai coraçao (oh heart) she's talking about her heart and when she switches to diz-me lá se és meu (tell me if you are mine) she's talking about her crush/lover.
She's essentially describing a person in love, losing control of itself completely

Well, as a singer myself, I must say this seems to be a very fair assessment from a strictly technical standpoint, and I’ve seen enough performances of this and listened to enough studio recordings of Mimicat’s songs in other slightly different styles to think that she can indeed clean those rough edges in time for what we hope will be her last two - or *three*, who knows? 😏 - performances of “Ai Coração” (the ç reads like in French, as in “façade”, by the way ;) ) until the final credits roll and the EBU’s Marc-Antoine Charpentier jingle chimes on May 13th… And, to be sure, some of them don’t even have to be dealt with at all; details such as, say, the tightness in her voice are completely on purpose, done as an expressive device to enhance the lyrics (your interpretation thereof, about senility and love spirals - it’s all hyperbole, part of a “comedic drama” as Mimicat herself calls it -, isn’t too far off, mind you, and you can ask your friend Pedro about it and he’ll likely confirm it, but if you want more detail on all the idioms and quirks lost in translation stay tuned, because I do have my own improved English translation ready to go in a recording and my own explainer to make).
One thing we also have to bear in mind is that she was sick in her semifinal and couldn’t even sing five days before it (so, around February 21-ish), and while that means she had around 20 days to recover until this performance, it seems she spent those two weeks worrying about changes in the choreography and styling (and, well, just getting better). She was effectively singing this for the second time in public, after having sent a very different arrangement months before and another studio recording of the current version, hastily made once she got the news of having been selected (she was one of only four contestants, out of hundreds of candidates, to apply through open submission, and she claims to have completely forgotten about it).
I would say the results are pretty amazing considering the supposed lack of self-confidence and confidence in the whole process (apparently she also unsuccessfully asked multiple times through friends - I’m guessing Tatanka, who did sing with her in her latest album and represented us at the ESC, was one of them - for an invitation from RTP, as her otherwise decent career was still a bit stagnant by local but especially global standards - we’re talking someone who signed with Sony BMG and definitely deserved better promotion, judging by both her studio and live output - and she knew she also had the chops to bring a certified banger to the ESC), at least before she presented herself and started giving interviews, because from everything I’ve been seeing and learning about this character since, she’s an extreme perfectionist and professional to a fault (having earned a BFA in Sound and Lighting Design probably has some bearing in that, too, it seems), and a complete and consistent stage beast and potential media (and social media!) darling.
And finally, onto the enjoyability part and my own assessment thereof… You say it may be a grower and that it didn’t hook you; oh, it will. ;) Just look at your own recording, especially from the 2:42 mark onwards… I say this not in a disrespectful manner, but in actual communion with your apparent vibe (as I probably made the exact same face and moves at the same point, except I didn’t have a camera pointed at me): you look like the “Dimitri Finds Out” meme, and what you just found out is that instead of this just being a conventional cabaret/burlesque musical number, it actually has a lot of ethnic vibes to it (not just Portuguese and Spanish, but also Balkan, at least according to her) and will make you dance most of the way through from that point onward whether you [think you] like the song or not (on your first listen, that is). 😂 And what’s more, you’re not the first reaction UA-camr I’ve seen going through that very process; it’s just that you’re wearing your professional cap most of the time and that takes you out of actually enjoying the song (there’s nothing wrong with that, of course, and in fact Mimicat and her crew seem to find a lot of value in that and are likely lurking around for data; she said as much in her interviews).
Once you start focusing on details (which will hopefully become better with time, and I would suggest you give a look at new live versions of it in her official channel; I believe she’s getting there, even if there are still some flatter and sharper sections in her Barcelona performance) on a more subconscious manner only - because I know performers and coaches alike just can’t “turn off that chip”, as we say - and under the assumption (which, mind you, you should confirm, of course) that they actually fit in not just with the overall theme of the song but also the specific verses they appear in, without having to give out assessments in between and in real time, you’ll start looking at the song as a whole and for what it is, warts and all (and yes, it’s basic, but what else could we ask for in three minutes? A conceptual prog treatise?), more like a “civilian listener”, and be inevitably infected by its catchiness.
And catchy it is; this is definitely not my cup of tea style-wise, either (YCWCB, SAL or Este Povo’s entries were, but I have to concede that they couldn’t hold a candle to hers when it comes to the whole package and the pop craziness that is the ESC, and they themselves weren’t probably as charismatic and quirky as her), but I found myself listening to it more than I expected and got the melody stuck in my head (and the lyrics, including my own version, but that started only after a few days, when the reactions started pouring in and I realized we had something special here again). And quite a few reviewers seem to have had it memorized already after playing it just a couple of times, a few days in after her victory, which is a testament to its memorability and means the entry won’t suffer too much from being almost the last song to be announced as the official entry (it was indeed the very last one to win in an ESC-style national selection contest, but there were a few others still TBA by their respective broadcasters).
My global assessment? This is a grower/dark horse, which will earn points on its own merits, but also from fans of her studio work, personality, etc. (and we don’t even have to get into the consolidated global televote, which may give it an extra 12- or 10-point boost from Portuguese immigration and speaking communities in the semifinal). She’s not as far out vocally or personally as Salvador was, but I’d say she’s actually more well-rounded as a performer, and while not an “ESC animal” either, definitely more tactful and diplomatic (which shouldn’t turn away conventional ESC fans as much) while still being quirky and endearing enough to connect with the audience. This is potential winner material and the bookies have their heads stuck far into their own posteriors, IMHO. 🙃

Important to note; Mimicat was quite ill when performing so I would assume her vocals aren't like this usually.
There is not a lot going on lirically because the translation used is just so literal it does not make sense in English, but in Portuguese it totally makes sense without being cheap. There are certain expressions in Portuguese that cannot be translated without losing its meaning.

@Honest Vocal Coach Georgina the english version of the lyrics hasn't been translated very well. Which is clearly influencing your opinion of the song. If the lyrics dont make sense you cant appreciate it properly. Take for example the Senile part, thats not the correct meaning. A better expression would have been, losing my mind.
For context, the song is about her having a big crush on someone, and expressing all the sensations that shes feeling in her body + mind. As its just a crush, the object of her desires doesnt even have a clue. The word "coração" is a double-entendre. It can mean heart and sweetheart. So from the context of the lyrics in some stages shes talking directly to her heart, in others shes talking to her sweetheart (Oh heart/sweetheart, will you be mine?). Add to that each line in Portuguese, rhymes with the previous one.
The cadence of the song also changes to reflect what shes expressing, so it begins fairly calmly then the tempo increases the further along she explaining how crazy shes feeling.
My translation of the lyrics:

the main issue with the translations is that we use both heart for the organ and for sweetheart, and she is mixing both meanings in the song, so unless you sometimes translate sweetheart into the mix its really hard to get the message across no matter how you try

Well after you read the translation, it was more than obvious that the song is about being hopelessly inlove with someone. And another thing, it isn't flamenco, its more burlesque... with alot of portuguese guitar playing. Nothing spanish in it al all.

Basically she's singing about being love sick. She's very in love and going insane. It's like when you love someone and you just act stupid for no apparent reason because your feelings for them are boiling. "Oh heart" is better translated to English as "my love" than "oh heart" because in portuguese we call our lovers "our hearts". "Oh sweetheart" can also be a better translation. The translation is off. It's a song about burning passion.

I think you must have had a reply on the meaning of the lyrics already but if you didn’t, here I go:
In this song Mimicat is speaking to her own heart kind of telling it off because it seems to be betraying by falling in love for someone. She goes through all the physical reactions and struggles of falling in love without knowing if she is loved back or not. At the same time, we use the exact same word “coracao” (heart) to mean my sweetheart or my love in Portuguese and she uses that double meaning very well when she asks her sweetheart if he’s hers, if he loves her back. We have a lot of double meanings in Portuguese such as this one and we often use them for fun. Despite all the struggles and what seems to be a intense passion, she uses some humour about it and gives hints of laughing about herself and her current condition, which is very Portuguese as well - singing and laughing about the pain so it’s less painful. This song could not get much more Portuguese than this and I love it because of it! I am really proud of her and I just hope people can think and feel it, out of the box, and vote so that she qualifies.

According to me this piece of music looks much more like classical music for a cabarete's song and show. I do appreciate listening to the piano interpretation of this music by PANO. Mimicat is a fun e happy song and she speaks from her passionate heart in a fun way. For me the music is captivating and more you listen to it the more fantastic it becomes. The translation you were looking at could have been a better one...sometimes you can literally get lost in translation if you translate word by word, but you should be able to get the essence of the song! Interestingly, she chose to make this music entry entirely in Portuguese when she is a brilliant English lyricist judging by her other songs. Perhaps her vocals were not her best that evening as she was still recovering from a cold, that's why she was holding back at some points in the song...Anyway, this is a fun, energetic, and cool performance, and I am looking forward to seeing it on the Eurovision stage on May 9th.

In case Pedro didn't have a chance to help... I think Coracao refers to the man she is in love with meaning: my love, baby. I read that she was a bit ill on that day, so her voice was not there 100%. That could explain the tightness. Love this song and as usual your reactions and by your reaction I can tell it will grow on you a lot more. Can't wait to your reaction to Georgia!
