Hi Max, Looking forward to the Horizontal borer project. I have worked on Kearns, Asquith and Union borers in my time and loved them all. Set ups can be challenging but the results are always pleasing.
There is something, satisfyingly hypnotic, about watching a shaper at work. 32:40 shows why we no longer really use them. Edited: Just read the rest of the comments, it appears that the word of the day is hypnotic! 😊 Nice bit of work again Max.
Yes a carbide insert face mill is so much quicker and that was just an 80mm dia cutter, you can just imagine what you can do with say a 250mm dia face mill in a really heavy mill. That said the shaper was running much slower and at a shallower cut depth and feed than it would have been run back in the day to rough down stock.

As much as we all love a bit of shaper action, it's no surprise that they were pretty much killed off by the milling machines. Nice to see yours will not be scrapped, but converted to a keyway cutter :)
i love my shaper. 24in plus and 5 hp. This shaper here sounds like its barely working. mild steel i bet you could double the step. My basic cutter is a 3/4 end mill, with a rounded cutting face, and a steep rake, i can turn it to select the cut angle, and rotate it, as i cut the rake at an angle to the cut face, so its adjustable rake as well. I have a key way cutter, it replaces the lantern, and you lock the clapper with a setscrew. its a big tool, but it has a smaller tool that fits inside it. So i can do many size keyways in quite deep length.
I'm there with you, the mechanical music and action really is something. Just what the frig are we. They're finding human made creations from 20,000+ years ago that baffle modern conventions, with a form of magic being the best explanation. I'm asking a loaded question, as I have a loose understanding of it; but staring into the gears and action of the shaper reminded me of the question. Thanks, Max.

Some pretty good camera work there Max! You had me going there for a second with that shaper pinion block going up and down. Got a kick out of that, really looked pretty cool! Always enjoy the shaper work. Abom79 has a pretty good sheer tool profile on his G&E shaper. Steve Summers over in Kentucky has a really cool looking shaper as well. Curtis has that monster shaper, but he never uses it in videos that I'm aware of. Not even sure he still has it. Can't wait till you get that horizontal boring machine going, I like to watch those work too. Very cool machines. Maybe some day you can build some forks for the Massey bucket, might be a good shop project. Anyways, cheers mate, see you in the next one. By the way, your wife is definitely got you covered as far as a shop assistant, that looked like a damn fine lunch! Catch you later brother. Olga seems to handle the horizontal milling just fine. However I was wondering, how is the Horizontal Boring Mill. BTW,, any time you have shaper footage I will definitely be watching. I noticed on the shaper that on the return stroke that the clapper didn't seem to lift. Was the lifting mech not working? Just in passing I want to thank You for all the work of getting out your videos. I know it takes a lot of time and effort. It is much appreciated. KOKO!

Nice, I miss my shaper, Klopp 550, when I get my shed floor concreted I can get her out of the container. I'm sure that lathe isn't as clapped out as my early 50's Macson, I get by with her.
When I have wide flat material like that, and don't have a coarse pitch blade, I prop up the material side that's against the fixed jaw. Now the cross section that the blade sees isn't the full 200mm.
our old shaper got converted to CNC internal spline cutter. The guy who done all the programing has nearly set it up so you just fill in the blanks for the sizes and away it goes. No CAM just type in the box, Our tooling is just done on the CNC mill out of blank toolsteel
Hey, from your panning around the shop I was checking what other machines you had. What's that thing between the shaper and your bridgeport? Grey thing. Has some kind of turret? And I do like shapers even though they are slow. The linear tool marks are probably better than the circular ones from a milling cutter for sliding surfaces, if you don't have a surface grinder is suppose.
Max, instead of repairing the way damage on the "last" lathe, have you considered something like James Clough's (Clough42) Electronic Lead Screw" (ELS)? I've never used an ELS, but it sounds like it could eliminate the need for that lathe if an ELS was installed onto one of your other lathes. I hate to think of scraping a lathe (or any other metalworking equipment), but since you've got so much work restoring your other equipment, plus paying jobs in your workshop, it may be worth thinking about an ELS.

Hi Max, isn't the shaper supposed to lift the tool ckear for the backstroke? You mentioned leaving space at the back for the tool to settle down. Lovely machine, it's actually bigger than what I laughingly call my workshop!
Good stuff I was taught when blocking up to do the biggest area first as that then went against the back jaw to get 2 square faces, then finish off. Also what is with the blue/orange work gear as you all seem to wear it.

The mining companies generally have high workplace safety standards and high visibility clothing is part of their requirements not only for their own employees but also the numerous sub-contractors who work on their mine sites or supply them. Hi-vis clothing is pretty standard now in the majority of trade related, warehousing and transport work places.
High Vis clothing is pretty standard here in the majority of workshops . Without it they make you wear a day glo vest ! HSE requirements . At least it gets supplied free of charge along with steel cap boots , where i work in my other job . These are my old ones from years ago , mostly it is yellow green colour with a sliver stripe or two now days . Hey , i lucked out with the blocks , did not follow any squaring practices & they came out pretty well spot on ! Cheers 👍

I can understand you standing next to a shaper and enjoying the cut. But standing idle next to a shaper at work defeats the purpose of using the shaper.

I have the clapper lift backed off . The friction clutch gets too hot when run for several hours . HBM is for next year . 👍

It is uncommon for a lathe to have the range of pitches & feeds that this thing has . It can cut up to an 80mm pitch thread . 👍
Max, Steve Watkins recently finished a device to check the slide ways on mills etc. Checks flat, warp, even and parallel. Might give it a look?

Olga is a Steeleater! At Work we have a Russian Stanko Lathe and a Shaper both are Beasts.

Ah, just watched one of the slow motion sections. You can hear it click prior to the backstroke, and JUST make out a little lift.
It has auto tool lift but i have it backed off at the moment . 👍
