As an environmental science student I am so happy you made this video. People only believe environmental issues are around global warming but the issues are so much deeper and stem from so much of our everyday life
Ehh idk.. If I was super rich this is the last thing I would worry about. The world is only ending for normal people. The rich will have more than enough resources and connections to get them through anything short of a sudden and catastrophic impact with minimal changes to their current lifestyle. Nature will find a way to rebalance. When we say the world is ending we really mean humans are ending and only the strong will survive, and in the modern world "strong" means rich and well connected.

I live on one of the cleanest and prettiest (IMO) rivers in the mainland United States. Our Salmon run is one of the steadiest in California. My father is a fisheries biologist which means he studies fish populations. His area of expertise is Salmon Runs in our local watershed. The Salmon runs have been getting smaller, there is no doubt about it. I hear stories from older fisherman about the runs in the sixties and seventy having such massive runs that in spots, it seemed as if you could walk across the fishes back to the other side. I sometimes see pictures of large chinooks and buckets of Coho. Now catching a large Chinook or seeing an adult Coho is an event. I can't really blame them for what was lost, it was a different mindset back then and I think deep down they regret it as well. In my short lifetime, I have seen a decline in the number of large game animals such as deer, elk, and bears. Songbirds are quieter and housecats are fatter. I have seen fewer butterflies and moths both of which used to be very common only a few years ago. As macabre as this is going to sound, I have also seen less roadkill which means fewer small animals which serve as the main food source for birds of prey and animals like foxes. Some brighter news is that there are more Bald Eagles around which shows that conservation efforts and pesticide regulation works, it's just a matter of implementing and enforcing them. This last year has had record low levels of rainfall and the river is warmer than it should be. The tourists love it but it makes me worried. There is more algae than there should be and the flow is way lower than normal for this time of year. The Brush is drier than it should be. Last year a fire got within a couple dozen miles of my house and I couldn't leave my home for a few days due to the smoke. This year's fire season is going to be much worse. In the ocean, people have been seeing less of the rarer species of Rockfish and the ones being caught are much smaller. I personally blame overfishing by commercial fishermen but that is up for debate. The crab season this year has seen commercial boats coming back with six keepers after a week of fishing. Domoic acid levels have been higher in shellfish. On a lighter note, I have been seeing more starfish which is a good sign seeing as there was a large die-off a few years ago. I think I would like to be a father one day however with the state of the world and the inaction of those in power, I fear that I cannot in good faith bring another human into this world if it won't last long enough to give them a good life. I would like to see a coral reef and a rainforest before they are all gone. I started this only intending to write a few sentences but it's been nice to put my feelings out there. I'm not the best writer so if you got this far, thank you.
Took an environmental science class for my high school senior class. I think everyone should be educated with many of these issues being downplayed or thrown into broad categories…
This video resonates with me. More people NEED to speak out about the problems in this world that have the platform to do so. There are serious issues that are ongoing and majority of people just don’t seem to care.
Wow drift0r, I can’t believe I’ve been a sub for so many years and never known you were a hunter! I’ve been a hunter my entire life! Do you still hunt? Personally I still hunt in order to not have to buy meat from a factory farm, and also just to have an actual awareness of what process has to happen in order to have meat on your plate in the first place, when you can go to a supermarket and buy a new steak from a new animal and never even have it register that something died for that one steak is appalling to me. It’s sad to see the conservation mindset being lost in our culture today. Most people don’t know that State wildlife agencies and the country's wildlife conservation system are heavily dependent on sportsmen for funding. Money generated from license fees and excise taxes on guns, ammunition and angling equipment provide about 60 percent of the funding for state wildlife agencies, which manage most of the wildlife in the U.S., this system of conservation has been incredibly successful at restoring the populations of North American game animals, some of which were once hunted nearly to extinction. Love ya drift keep up the good work!
From what I heard of countless near death experiences, it doesn’t feel that bad and it’s absolutely correct that the phobia of death is worse then the actual thing.
Sure, but it's looking like some huge medical and technological advances are going to be happening in the next few decades that will greatly increase life expectancy. Also there's always cryonics which is the route I plan to take.

I've felt this way most of my life. So good to know there are others who think the same way.
The Earth can easily support 9 Billion people and the human population will probably never eclipse that. The issue isn't the number of people, it's terrible resource management.
@@Drift0r Oh Same. I agreed with 99% of the video, I just had a small issue with that. Now if humans don't make major reforms to the way we live and eat, then yeah, 7 billion is too many.
nah, its either or. either we are too many. so just limit us to 1-2 billion and continue to have ALL the stuff! or we are too greedy. so we have to have a lot less nice things but get to be 9 to 10 billion. but why would anyone choose number two?! i'd rather have a nice life with all the cool stuff and only raise 2 children instead of having a crappy life raising 3-4!
@@lordofnothing. How is it possibly either or? You think the standard of living hasn't been skyrocketing just as fast as the population has for the last 300 years? 9 billion is a conservative estimate based on our current technology and infrastructure. Humans haven't even populated 12% of the planet yet. Just imagine that the pop stays the same, you don't think that technology/infrastructure will continue to improve the standard of living just as it has for 300 years? Then why would *increasing* the number of people who can work on these problems, and increasing the demand for such solutions, make it any worse? Most of what Drift said in the video was pretty accurate, but population always has been a local problem only, and we are nowhere close to making it a global problem.
As a hippy, it's funny to me that you made it a point to clarify that you're not talking about hippy dippy stuff yet the reality is we're really preaching the same message in regards to the preservation of life on earth
Correct. However, sometimes reframing the same message can have a big impact for some groups. For example, people in Georgia don't care about animal rights or the earth mother, but they sure do care about preserving the family hunting grounds. Labels prevent cooperation so I sought to repackage the message.

Thanks for taking an objective perspective on the matter. I'm currently an engineering student working as an intern. I've been telling people to SAVE THE PHYTOPLANKTON! I would argue that they make more O2 than trees. You can recycle all you want but when stuff is made in Mexico and then assembled in China and shipped back to the USA 🤯 edit: let's not forget california is the only state that allows the nets that just scrape the bottom. Almond farming is really bad for water and CA is supposedly short on water.
what's ridiculous is, they always say "stop taking long showers" for all the consumers but the government never regulates the almond farms/companies to stop wasting water like madmen? The almond farming uses WAY WAY more water than any long showers. I get that saving water on every front so saving on showers is fine but where is the accountability on the corporations that are wasting water? It's "always the consumer's fault" but never the companies' fault? It's part of the problem many people want to eat almonds, but it's WAY more fault on the almond farms/companies for using water excessively. Absolutely ridiculous. I hate how people's default response is to always blame consumers but never the corporations that are the ones who literally CONTROL the supply.

Might I ask what we do about the other countries that won't abide by this? It's pretty clear in the US and Japan (and I think Italy) that we're "not having enough children" (in quotes because I find gov't mandatory birthrates *or* lack of to be disgusting) that we don't have enough "children" (though most of us are adults now) born between 1985-Present to support just the Boomer population as they live longer, require more and more expensive medical care, and live longer in that expensive medical care. There already aren't "enough children" in the United States and there are plenty of disaffected millennials and Gen Z who don't want kids for a plethora of reasons (everyone I personally know had an abusive/bad home life and doesn't want to accidentally eff up their offspring.) Also the other women I know are finding it difficult to find a life partner who shares their values if they *did* want children. It also doesn't help that the women I know also pretty much all had their own fathers walk out on the family and saw the pressure it put on their mom to be a single mom. So yes, I agree with you. Let's stop having kids and let's not pressure people to have them. *However* outside of select countries how the *hell* are you going to regulate that? China and India together have just under 3 billion (various sites I added up have it coming to 2.8~ billion) and China itself has an even bigger "problem" of not having enough young people to take care of the old people-and they did limit their birth rates. So it's a problem we'd have to get everyone in the world to agree on and agree to *not* artificially extend the lives of the elderly which puts *massive* economic strain on a country, state, or even a family to care for an ailing great great grandparent. Like if you're 102 and up and mobile and able to care for yourself, awesome, good for you, but if you're nearly 100 and being forcibly kept alive (what happened with my great grandmother)-I personally think it's very cruel, both to the person being kept alive (especially if it's not honoring a DNR) and the other family members who don't want that-then just ffs allow them to pass on. And honestly I don't know how to fix it. :/
I think why people disliked is because people don’t wanna hear about the supposed end of the world and their favorite youtuber saying he’s gonna have a suicide pact with his wife. Science has advanced so much in just this century alone. I’m sure we’ll find a way to save our earth and us humans are survivors. It’s just disheartening to hear from somebody as smart as you’re drift because your probably right. I’ve been watching you since I was 12 and I’m now about to turn 21. I hope future generations get to live in a world that isn’t perfect but much better than it is today.
24:07 nailed it right on the head. I don’t plan on retiring either and every few years I take out lots of money from my 401k. All the older people at my job look at me like I’m crazy, but the US keeps raising the retirement age and at this point I won’t live to see it. I also share the same exact beliefs with children, why make another human being just to suffer. Might as well use the money as just go out in a blaze of glory in my 60s.
I applaud your organized and well thought out explanation on everything you mentioned in this video. The more people that know the truth, the more likely a beautiful mind can be a catalyst for change. I have very similar ideologies as you do; with no platform to show it. It is so refreshing to see someone speak the truth on all the threats our species will face in the future.
The signs are there and it’s actually quite terrifying, what could help solve this? is the tough question… people ignore the solutions and the steps we could take to help change things, and if we could get the masses to change and adapt, then we have to get our government to change too, and then we have to not just get our government(although that would definitely help) but all the governments to change, that’s what’s so scary and nihilistic, like you said it is going to take our backs being up against the wall, when things get really bad to actually enforce change, which is a depressing thought, but good video, I agree with your point of view on this

@drift0r I’ve always liked your content. I believe you are right on some of these issues. First of all, I think you DO have to talk about the link between how humans treat animals and how that is affecting the planet. You touched on the subject regarding the oceans. We are overfishing. Not just that, there is a huge % of “Bycatch” which greatly harms ocean biomes. You should watch Seaspiracy. If you want to help, stop eating fish. Raise more awareness. The meat and dairy industry are also destroying the planet, they’re destroying eco-systems and land. You are right about industrial farming. Factory farming is pure evil. It is so selfish and destructive not to mention very immoral. Micro plastic is another danger. We need to stop making plastic. We need to recycle all the plastic that already exists. We need to switch back to glass, cloth, paper or reusable materials for our food. Cut down on unnecessary plastic packaging. When plastic breaks down it can get so small that it will get in to our lungs. When that happens we are in real danger.
Hey Driftor, great vid it looks like you’ve put a lot of thought into this. Something I wanted to add to the points you’re making after 17:00, is that Antarctica belongs to no one because of an international contract set to expire in the 2040s... after that international agreement expires, we will definitely see international DISagreement over the claims to Water, Oil, and other highly valuable natural resources in that area. There are unofficial/unenforced landclaims, but because they have been historically unofficial other countries (read: China) have built on them to harvest resources... in 2040 there is going to be an international power vacuum/grab to officially secure claim on the lands and their resources TLDR I think Antarctica is the most likely cause for World War 3
I NEVER eat fast food. Ever. Been at least 5 years. No processed food at all. 100% organic whole food only!!!! only eat grass fed grass finished beef. You are what you eat. I’m very lucky I live across the street from a health food store.
If you want hope, look into permaculture and urban food forests. Permaculture could change the world as we know it. Imagine a world where all the lawns are replaced with food forests. Bountiful fresh food within an arms reach of your door. It would bring our society to it's knees and make people question if this system really is so good. With daily meals free to everyone, the biggest whip of the masses is useless. People would see that their jobs are just a means of obtaining a daily meal, giving them more bargaining power and freedom to choose what they want to do. The workers of the world break their chains and create a society that meets everyone's basic needs. A society that allows people to work towards their own goals and society's advancement in their own way without forcing themselves into servitude of people seeking a bigger high score. Obesity, hunger, climate change, water scarcity, wage slavery, homelessness, child poverty, depression, anxiety, isolation, supply line shortages, famine, mass extinctions, deforestation, animal cruelty. We just need to take one small step. One small step to freedom. One small step towards tomorrow. That world is here. Waiting for us to make the first move.

It's no coincidence two of the richest men in the world are actively trying to find a viable way off the planet.
it used to be that the richest man in the world was trying to save the poorest. I guess exception to the rule tho

Fair enough. I want better resource management.
@@Drift0r Oh Same. I agreed with 99% of the video, I just had a small issue with that. Now if humans don't make major reforms to the way we live and eat, then yeah, 7 billion is too many.

@@Drift0r give me better resource management or I’m killing my wife
Correct. However, sometimes reframing the same message can have a big impact for some groups. edit: let's not forget california is the only state that allows the nets that just scrape the bottom.
Almond farming is really bad for water and CA is supposedly short on water.
Yeah we use waaay too much water in California. Just look at the lake water levels.
what's ridiculous is, they always say "stop taking long showers" for all the consumers but the government never regulates the almond farms/companies to stop wasting water like madmen? The almond farming uses WAY WAY more water than any long showers. I get that saving water on every front so saving on showers is fine but where is the accountability on the corporations that are wasting water? It's "always the consumer's fault" but never the companies' fault? It's part of the problem many people want to eat almonds, but it's WAY more fault on the almond farms/companies for using water excessively. Absolutely ridiculous.
I hate how people's default response is to always blame consumers but never the corporations that are the ones who literally CONTROL the supply.

his reason for not wanting children is also part of the reason why i don’t want children either, he is so right the world is only getting worse

What are you getting at exactly?

Your nuka cola shirt is a nice thematic match with the post-apocaliptic topics :p
There are unofficial/unenforced landclaims, but because they have been historically unofficial other countries (read: China) have built on them to harvest resources... in 2040 there is going to be an international power vacuum/grab to officially secure claim on the lands and their resources
TLDR I think Antarctica is the most likely cause for World War 3

I appreciate that drift0r knows the truth about global warming that it is overblown and that other issues deserve far more attention
Good timing for this video as the west of the US is experiencing record breaking heat right now
Subbed for the CoD content. Stayed for the things that make you think outside the box.
Us humans aren't helping that's for sure.
My friends essentially stop listening when I start talking about our oceans. I refuse to eat seafood anymore. I’m one person, but at least I am trying.
I need to save this video to a Playlist so I can refer people to it as my explanation for my not wanting to have kids
This kind of realness is refreshing. Well done.
So basically just prep and start raising your own animals. already bought lots of rabbits chickens enough genetic diversity where inbreeding wont happen for decades. Oh and getting into aquaponics so will have fish as well.
That's good for now, but if people are savages someday, it could all dissappear quickly.
@@feynk6671 Lead and steel and tenacity will make it difficult for the savages. Family and friends with combine arms even more so. I hope we can truly prevent the collapse But I am not holding my breath.
Very good points made here Drift. Hope you're doing well my man 💜
This guy makes a lot of sense
He has A LOT of common sense, if everyone had as much common sense as this guy, we would maybe actually survive..
@@alexanderulv3886 But not many do, so here we go.
I’m glad it’s not just me. Excellent video on a topic that is tough to talk about.
He’s speaking facts 💯 but it sucks because only money makes a humans listen 👂 so the future is Doomed
TG for Elon. Martian scientists can repopulate the Earth after Earthlings destroy it.
Bro, life might get tough, but humans will survive. Technology over the next 30-50 years will be insane. Lab grown meat will revolutionize farming, insect eating can replace live stock. When politicians feel legitimately threatened by environmental changes, legislation will be changed. Humans will get to a point where we are sustainable. Our instincts so survive will win out
If Drift0r was a college professor, I would go back to school if nothing else to take his class as an elective.
This video needs to go viral like mega viral so humans can try and fix this
You said it a number of times.....money. Capitalism taken to the extreme is behind most of theses issues IMO
Yes, making food affordable sure has hurt our world
Capitalism is the only reason why the Western world has been so prosperous for years.
When profit is your MO, you're willing to do terrible things. Definitely doesn't help that we live in a society that's so hell bent on consuming. You're never happy with what you have, and you will never be happy until you have the next thing. Rinse and repeat
@@seymourbabooms1694 Without a consumer society, mass produced basic luxuries like food, clothing, and technology will become less accessible and affordable to the general population. And profits in a capitalist economy drive innovation and encourage companies to create better products. Let's not forget that you are also a part of this prosperous system, so if you don't like it, please move elsewhere to some poor socialist country.
Ah, capitalism, the eternal boogeyman.
Really didn't think driftor would make a video like this, but I am glad he did.
This is an extremely cynical and negative outlook. You lost me at “my retirement plan is suicide.” COVID distorted your perception. I think you’ve admitted as much.
Things you’ve overlooked off the top of my head: world population growth rate has been declining for some time and will continue to do so; humans show an incredible ability to adapt when they have to (just look at the last year); younger generations are more educated and environmentally concerned than ever before - and they will be in charge soon.
Don’t get me wrong, environmental challenges need to be dealt with and there will continue to be consequences to ignoring them. It’s just way too early to throw your hands up and say let it burn b/c…yolo.
I agree with you a lot on the new generation thing the old generation is a big cause of a lot of these problems that our generation is gonna have to fix the question is can we? I at least think we will make it better and plus 50 years ago compare our technology to what we have now we can come up with something to help our planet
This isn't cynical at all, he literally said that last part as one of the potential reactions to it. This video was incredibly down the middle and factual to ne honest
@@luckyraygun1607 This. Technology lags industry. As a species, we have gone from horse/wagon to interplanetary rockets over a period of a few hundred years. We have already found several possible solutions to cleaning our environment, plastic eating bacteria & fungus, carbon capturing, alternative energies, etc. I imagine 50 or 75 years from now people will look back & laugh at the climate change hysteria of today.
@@TheGuardian_TM this is what I’m saying look at how fast we’re progressing in technology I’m about 70% sure that we can find solutions to these problems . I mean compare the technology from 50 years ago to now huge improvements. And yeah there are people finding ways to help protect the environment now. Now it will take all of us together to stop this and it won’t be easy but I feel we can get through this. We have to in order for us to live
@@luckyraygun1607 the problem isn't the fact that we aren't capable of creating technology that will stop this, the problem is our corporations that have the resources and manpower to create this technology are driven by short term profits and use all their resources/innovation to sell wasteful basic consumerist products like fast fashion and cheap plastic items because it is more profitable. Yes, consumers are part of the problem with desiring these wasteful things, BUT people are being absolutely ignorant of that fact that corporations are a BIGGER part of the problem. They ABSOLUTELY have the resources and manpower to solve these issues, but their motivation is in the wrong direction.
We needed this info, thank you
Why not talk about organizations that are working on these issues so that your viewers could help support them. While you may be doom and gloom there are people who feel the same way and are actually doing something about each issue you talk about. From ocean cleanup organizations, organizations that are fighting against over fishing, more efficient energy production, sustainable farming organizations looking to improve the processes, etc. you just gloss over all these people’s efforts, and suggest a solution of giving up, ending the lives of yourself and others. I think you need some more critical thought into this. People have a way of progressing in areas that have a lot of effort put into it. So maybe help those efforts that you think would help, instead of saying your going to off your wife and yourself as a solution.
Just commenting cause I’ve been watching you forever and you make good vids still. Gotta help you in the algorithm!
