  • For the next video in the series on our 1988 Hatteras 65C sport fishing yacht, we share the reality that not all trips offshore are productive. It is costly, time consuming and a little disheartening, but an absolute reality that we rarely see represented. We still have fun and enjoy ourselves during the trip but it is way more fun when you land some meat on the deck.
On this trip we targeted about 8 fishing spots that were about 50 miles out, but each one we checked had no fish on the screen and was well stirred up by the time we got there. While this vessel can drive through just about anything, stopping to stand around and try to fish in rough seas is not only a drag, but potentially very unsafe as well.
Everybody on the deck wore inflatable vests in case someone went over, and after several hours and a few regroups we just decided to call it a day and head back in. A small craft advisory was issued shortly after we got offshore and literally everyone else had run for the barn already, but we wanted to try to stay the course.
One unexpected perk was getting to see the USCG Baroque Eagle, which is one of only a few tall-ships still in military registry today. It is used to train both cadets and officers in sailing and navigation technique. Eagle is 295ft long and can make 19 knots sailing or 10 knots on a diesel engine - impressive for a 1936 build.
As always, we appreciate your time to check out the video and welcome your questions and comments. Your subscription and likes on our videos help us to know to keep them coming.
    Fair winds and following seas!

Really enjoying your content. You show the reality of boat ownership. You seem like good people to hang out with.

Fish or no fish, a day on the water is always better than a day on the couch. If you're ever back in Galveston and want tuna... hit these.

They're about 120 miles out, but they usually always produce tuna as well as a couple tournament winning blue marlin.

Thank you for sharing! Yes we thought it would be good to show that not every attempt turns out, and is part of the effort it takes to fill the freezer. Agree it is still fun to get the yacht out though.

Glad we only have a 400 gallon fuel tank but of course we have less then half the engines that you have Twin 671's.. too bad no fish.. your boat takes everything so well, haven't seen you doing a clean up of gear after rough seas as so many do, there is a way to keep things secure and so many just don't get it.

Yes it can be a little spendy when we don't produce for sure. Agreed, enough cannot be said about proper stowage of everything and the risks of loose items under deck where you may not know what they are tearing up in rough seas.
