    Saw him a few years back at Pizza Express in Holborn, just singing, playing his guitar and telling a few stories. Wonderful evening. Didn't realise how lucky we were. Much missed.

    Love this song…why did it take me so many years to discover Gordon Haskell…sadly it was after his death. I can’t get enough of listening to this song and all his music. Rest in Eternal Peace

    There will never be another Gordy. A fantastic musician, songwriter and friend. You're greatly missed at the house on the A30.

    Spent quite a few mad hours with Gordon and Damage back in Hampshire on his Dorset/Hampshire regular gigs. I only found out he finally made it 'big' when I was away in Cyprus and he came up on the MTV screen in a bar. I said I know that voice! Bloody hell it was Gordon! Came home and got in touch with him and he told me the figures! lol. I shortly afterwards set up my guitar dealership andheard nothing from him. One day 8 years later I got a call on my shop phone asking if I could source him his favourite Ovation guitar, he was on some Greek island from his Fathers heritage and the line was bad. Never completed the deal and never heard from him until I heard the bad news.

    found this info online, if it does not infringe copyright will paste here " Even before its release as a single in late 2001, Haskell's song surpassed the Beatles’ "Hey Jude" and Frank Sinatra's "My Way" to become the most-requested song on BBC Radio 2. Despite limited promotion, it charted as the Christmas number two in the UK Singles Chart. Although appearing on Top of the Pops that week, the broadcast was delayed for 14 months due to pressure from EMI Records, Robbie Williams' Management (David Enthoven who had managed him in King Crimson) and the City of London Bank who were arranging a 42 million pound deal with Williams. It is generally accepted that had he been broadcast he would have taken the No 1 from Williams and no explanation or apology was ever given by the BBC Executive Producer. It went on, however, to sell more than 400,000 copies." - wikipedia

    I saw him play at the Bent Brief in Southampton when I first moved there in 1999. This song got to No. 2 a couple of years later, then got forgotten. It's a lovely song.

    Lovely tune. I remember first hearing it on Radio 2. I liked it instantly,. I didn't realize he's no longer with us. Such a shame.

    For those who could be interested... look for the 1972 King Crimson's "Lizard" album. Mr. Haskell is in the band singing and playing bass guitar.

      I came here doing the oppossite, while I was listeing that KC album I wanted to know who was the singer at that formation and I found it was Mr Haskell... What surprised me afterwards is that now his voice sounds a lot more deeper, I was expecting to listen something more similar to Jon Anderson

      @@MauroGabrielTitimoli You may have mistaken him for Jon Anderson because Jon Anderson was a guest singer in Prince Rupert Awakes, the first part of Lizard

      B. Haskell hated that album, and he hated king crimson.

    This would not have been a hit if it were not have been for Terry Wogan's rellentless playing of it? He is the real hero.

    • @theesbband
      @theesbband 3 роки тому +2

      No, nothing to do with Terry Wogan. It was played once by his old friend Johnnie Walker just once, and the BBC phone lines “lit up.” From then on it sold over 400,000 copies in a couple of weeks. Johnnie lives in Berwick St J, about 5 miles from Gordy’s old house in Ashmore. Both men told me the same story.

    Yes..... Paul Yeung, or "Paul Young" as he was known of in the old days when he used to play for Southampton UK based band "Rufus Stone" was the original player on the recording ... Although this is not him on this video ... :-( .... I know Paul and I dont think even Paul would remember what he did on the original solo wise .... It was a one take and what ever came out at the time in question ..... That's JaZZzzzzzzz........... ;-)
    Best Regards ... DeanoTheSaxman .....
