I recently bought a prong for one of my dogs, and it seems to work pretty well. Not only that, but I tested in on myself, and it didn't hurt. It was uncomfortable when pulled, but not painful. Different things work for different dogs. One of my dogs walks by my side with a flat collar and voice, my other is going to be gradually trained with the prong. Seems safer and better directing than the halti to me, which she had before the prong. The prong doesn't seem to bother her at all. She acts no differently having that put on than any other collar. People seem more okay with choke chains than prongs, which confuses me.
Every dog is different, some dogs respond really well to treats and clicker training. This is how I trained all my dogs, spent hundreds of dollars on trainers and classes and at a year old my golden still pulls like a manic, even with the gentle leader or front clip harness, I would constantly have to have treats with me to get him to behave and even then it was touch and go. I now use a prong collar and there is no more pulling and I can take him out on more walks that I ever could before. Positive reinforcement should always be used with training but it is not the ONLY method, nor a fool proof method. Same with the collars, if you don't know how to use them you're going to hurt your dog. If you don't want to use them, don't, but don't tell people who do use them that they are horrible owners because I love my dog and I did everything I could to get him to behave without using averse methods but it wasn't working. My dog was stuck at home most of the day because I couldn't control him.
Stormy K use prongs if you want but it’s not the method that doesn’t work, it’s you doing it wrong. Part of positive training is teaching then NOT to rely on you having treats to listen. Otherwise you’re just bribing them.
TurkeyBurglar Jones with most dogs getting them off the treats doesn’t work when it comes to walks because they are thinking about the food, without it they go into predator mode or throw a fit in dog.
I highly endorse using the prong collar. I have 2 large mastiff puppies. My trainer recommended getting the prong collars to correct the pulling. Thank you Sweet Baby Jesus! - I now walk them instead of being pulled and dragged by them.
They are far kinder on a dog's neck than regular training collars. They do not choke. They pinch if the dog pulls. Not all dogs are the same, just as not all people are the same. I have owned different dogs and only required the prong collar on one dog - one that responded to no other training, not even food motivated/click. The harness triggers many dog's 'pull' instinct. And 'gentle leads' and harnesses based systems do nothing to help aggressive, or jumping or high prey drive dogs. The problems incurred with walking a dog which gets people looking for help is far more than just 'pulling'. The prongs do not poke into the skin. Put one on yourself and pull... then put a regular collar on yourself and pull. The pinch collar is far more effective and does not choke. Trachea damage is common among regular training collars but unheard of when using the prong collar properly. You keep your hand at your side, with the leash,no pulling, no dragging. And they do NOT need to be used forever. They are for training.
I tried the prong collar on my large Lab after using at least two other products . I tried the front connecting type harness and a choker. Neither one worked at all. I have used the prong collar for quite a while and it helped some. I'd say a 50% reduction in pulling. My friend sent me a link to the Perfect Walk no pull collar a couple months ago. Used it and it helped the first day and my dog hardly realized she was wearing it. Now, a few weeks later she is perfect on leash.
Omg my soon to be 5 months female gsd used to nearly choak her self out and on a harness she would pull my arm out. I put a prong collar in 3 seconds she walkes like a normal walk should be. The gratest thing ever and for those who think its a torture device would be amazed far from the sterotype.
I am so sick of the judgemental people who think these things are abusive. It scares away people from a tool that can actually help people AND dogs! I was about to give up my new pound pup because of her issues, but I found vids like this that help explain how these ACTUALLY work. Ordered it, and it's coming tomorrow, I can't wait to try it out. I get excited imagining how much more freedom I could give her by teaching her how to walk safely. My girl is some sort of husky mix and she's partially blind (cataracts). About 5yo, never leash trained. She also really doesn't like putting harnesses/collars on. I've been working on getting her comfortable with them, but she still has loads of energy she needs to get out, and it can take upwards of 30 min to an hour just to get a harness on without stressing her. So I haven't even bothered with the gentle-leader or others. Too expensive and I'm not confident they'd help her. Walks are the only way I can reliably help her release energy (she won't play in the yard, too distracted. house doesn't have enough space for her either). And she pulls HARD, very reactive, and treats do NOT work on her outside. They work inside, but the second she gets outside (even in our fenced yard, where she is comparably very calm), she is very distracted. She is very difficult to walk, which makes it very stressful on me (I have anxiety as well). Especially any time we come across other dogs. She WILL respond to praise a little bit outside, but it's very hard for me to get her attention when I need it in order to teach her. The faster I can get her walking safely the better. It'll help with ALL other training and behavioral issues. Otherwise training is just a big struggle against her energy. Unfair for her, and very stressful for me. Anxious dog + power + lack of focus = always a bad combination. But she's also VERY sensitive. She wants to please and loves praise, but she has a very hard time understanding my direction. I don't even like sharp tugs, but I HATE how she pulls on the flat collars (wheezing, etc. very bad for her throat D: ). I had no idea how gentle these things could be, and how the main PURPOSE is to help you communicate with the dog. Flat/etc collars are confusing, especially if they're already amped up. It seems like her love of praise + prong collar will really help her understand the walking "game". I wish more people would take the time to research these collars. People just assume they're abusive and refuse to think about it carefully. My dog needs a very light touch, but she also needs to UNDERSTAND that touch. The latter is where I struggle, and these collars seem like my best chance at helping her understand me. I have literally only seen two types of comments on prongs. Adoration or respect of this tool from people who understand its function, and angry people who say it hurts the dogs but who have no idea how it actually works. It's actually one of the only tools I've found where people who used it overwhelmingly report lots of success. The few off-examples ALWAYS come down to trainer error. No other tool has this kind of success, and it's also the one that illicits the most aggressive, irrational reaction from people who've never even tried it themselves. It's heartbreaking imagining how many well-intentioned people are spreading lies about this collar. There are SO many dogs that could be helped with it, who end up dead because their owners couldn't effectively train their dog. Even if it WAS causing pain, which it DOESN'T, do they really think a little pain during training is worse than a lifetime of horrible, dangerous behavior that could lead to severe injury and death, as well as far more stress for the dog and owner? It's so irrational, and it spreads like a virus. Like any tool, it's all about how you use it. It's actually very judgemental to say prongs hurt dogs. Funny that objection usually comes from the type of people who think judgement based on appearance is bad :^) Heck, if you ask me, walking a dog that doesn't know how to walk properly is far more abusive than using a prong. Especially if you're using a flat collar. Dogs fight flat collars so much that they'll literally choke themselves. Because they're SCARED and STRESSED. Think about it, if you were wearing a collar, why would YOU pull that hard against it? Easy, because you're freaked out! Prongs communicate pressure MUCH more effectively with FAR less stress or damage, because the dog learns to understand that THEY can make choices that REDUCE that pressure. When your dog is pulling on a flat, they're already freaked out and can't learn as easily because they're choking. And if they're already in a stressful environment, you're just adding another stressor (confusing leash control). If the dog learns to understand what the leash is communicating, you actually REDUCE the amount of stressors while showing them that if they're freaked out by something, YOU are the one who'll take care of it. Scary dog? Look to owner for direction. If owner isn't scared, it tells the dog that they don't have to be scared either. Bam, calmer dog. We don't live in a dog-world. We live in a human-world with human-rules. It's our job as owners to help the dog understand OUR world. Which means helping them understand that while out in public, YOU are their guide and it's very important that they look to you. Dogs don't understand street lights! We are way more effective at navigating the human-world safely than a dog. The problem is, dogs don't understand that! Training is ALL about helping them understand! Sorry for the rant. People can be so nasty when they think they "know" everything, and someone disagrees. It's sad how people can be so cruel and nasty to strangers based off their OWN misunderstanding. All it does is scare people away from better solutions.
Exactly! Back then i was completely against the prong collar after hearing about it and seeing THOSE google pictures.(the pictures that have the dogs neck with holes on it cause the stupid owner didn't do any research on the prong collar) but then after hearing that even the best trainers use them, i thought why not give it a try and did some research on it. And now i am recommending the prong collar for instant results
I used to think these collars were cruel, until ive heard even some top dog handlers use them.It all depends on how you use it,if you use it incorrectly you are causing harm and abuse.Ive put this on myself and used it,it doesnt hurt at all but when pulled on it pinches you which would cause you to stop pulling.
Harnesses are not effective, they make the dog thinks it is okay to pull because the harness was made for sled dogs not your domesticated house pet. If you want your dog to obey you and walk by your side this thing is what will do that. It shows the dog that there is control and it must obey. It does not harm the dog it simply redirects the dog.
harnesses themselves don't make dogs think it's ok to pull.... it's when you don't train the dog beforehand that he pulls because he gets a reward for pulling, which is getting to move forward and sniff everything.
Caitlin Peacock my dog has never been rewarded for pulling. She pulled forward. I stop. Often turning around and going an opposite way. Some dogs (many) instinctively pull. Has nothing to do with reward. Of course if people LET their dogs pull, then yes- the dog sees it as taking his human for a walk instead of the other way around.
Yes, the *instinct to pull* + not knowing what to do when a leash is attached (leash is an unnatural thing for a dog) + reward for pulling all contribute to why a dog may pull. I disagree though that it has nothing to do with reward, why would a dog pull hard if it hurts his neck? Because he wants to sniff and explore, and that is his reward. To him, the literal pain in the neck is worth it.
There is a saying about dogs.. they go and go until they can't go anymore. A dog may not realize they are injuring themselves when they push against their trachea. Until it is too late. Their neck is one of the strongest parts, the pinch collar pinches the skin..And only if they really tug. It lets the dog experience a natural consequence that will not harm him but which feels unpleasant. Ever see a dog running and playing and inadvertently hit the table or wall/fence etc.. and just shake it off and keep on going? However little nips from mom and from other dogs put them in their place immediately
My pit bull almost forgets pain when he goes over his threshold, my chihuahua flinches if she hits the end of the leash. It really depends on the dog I guess.
This video was done so well. I'm very impressed since everything is covered. I know people have many views on these, but I love them and use them appropriately, mostly on large, strong dogs. I've never had a dog have a problem with it, and literally see those type of dogs go from maniacs on a leash to calm and walking nice. People may say "because it hurts them", but that is so not true. While there may be some sensation, it's not painful at all. The only negative I have is that they don't come with instructions (which is absurd), and this is where the problems are. Would never bother with a choke chain again.
my dog Goliath is a purebred bernese mountain dog and is 90lbs and is 2 he just recently started to pull me and brake the heel command so I bought a prong collar and used as directed in the video and with in seconds he was doing as he was asked and was no longer pulling thank you so much leerburg!
Kaitlyn Hernandez yeah cuz it hurts him that's why he's ""behaving"" he's not behaving he's in pain cuz his owner thinks its good to dig spikes in his neck to stop him pulling cut they can't train their dog it should be done with voice training
And a prong collor can have rubber tip protection put on and that's what I have I use to believe they were cruel and hurt the dog but after much research and asking different trainers what techniques I can use they all recommended for me use the prong collar
If you are thinking of using one of these, stop and read blogs.rspca.org.uk/insights/2014/04/01/pinch-collars-and-why-they... or dogstrust.org.uk/mediacentre/newsreleases/pr14prongcollars.aspx If you agree that pinch/prong collars are just plain wrong then come and sign our petition at saynotothepinch.co.uk/sign-here and help us to ban these things in the UK. Training does NOT need 'some form of correction' like those mentioned in this video. Plenty of us deal with difficult, even aggressive dogs successfully without the need for these collars.
Choke and prong collars are designed to punish dogs for pulling by inflicting pain and discomfort. They can cause serious physical and emotional damage to dogs and should never be used.
Cat Lover You have to understand prong collars are no harm when use correctly, at the right time and the right size.Collars, gentle leaders and leashes can be deadly if use the wrong way. So don't blame the tool, blame the person that abuses their dogs with it.
A combination of prong collars, treats, and clickers is the best way. Reward him when he follows the prong collar corrections.Quick release collars are a bad idea and for lazy people. It takes two minutes to remove a regular prong collar.
You have that wrong very wrong. To train A dog you need, calmness, patients, the skills to be able to positively renforce your dog. Exercise, discipline then affection in that order. You also practice, no touch, no talk, no eye contact. Simple. You the get your prong collars and your ecollors and you throw them into the rubbish bin where they belong. You then give your dog or dogs to someone that will love them and not abuse them. Where they will be respected and loved.
If the dogs were loved then you wouldn't even think about using prong collars or e collars. There is no need for such barbaric methards. Dogs are pack animals and they want to follow a calm assertive pack leader. If you have to use barbaric and abusive tools to train your dogs then you are not A strong, calm and assertive pack leader simple fact. I have never used those things on my dogs and my dogs love and respect me.
Wow, give fluffy a big kiss for me, lol! You really don't have a clue!! There's nothing barbaric about using an e collar or prong collar correctly. You can do as much damage with a regular collar. But, as usual, u can't fix stupid!
+gsdsteve you are a good for nothing uneducated idiot. Prong collars and shock collars are animal abuse. There is no need for them. Cesar Millan has taught us that
my german shepherd got out of her prong collar just now. she ran around the park and i feared we wouldn't get her back. luckily, she always stayed by us and walked all the way home. i love the prong collar but can you tell me why it broke free? she wasn't pulling much at all. it's not loose but it's also not really tight on her. thinking about going with a harness.
Well, this is why you need a safety link. If you didn't know, the prong collar was made to easily detach the prongs for adjusting purposes. A safety link is basically just a 3-4 inch leash that you can attach to your leash and to the prong collar just incase the dog can accidentaly break through the collar just like you mentioned.
You are so right about small dogs I have 2 Chihuahua's and a pit bull who I am training on a prong collar , but considering them with the Chias too they are so spoiled and no training has worked.
My prong collar is messed up.... theres a "pincher" thats twisted up thats connected to the hoop .... can i still use it or i have to fix it before i put it on my dog, i dont want it to cause harm if its all twisted up
if you think prongs are abusive, take a look at chokers. prongs are much safer than chokers, and chokers damage the dog a whole lot more base on studies, prongs don't,, unless you abuse/misuse it. they don't hurt, try it on yourself, they act like a mother dog's bite to their pups when correcting them,, not a bite to kill them. if you try it on your arm, it'll just feel like a nibble
I am new to your channel . How would you describe your training style? I am looking for some common sense advice on dog training. How long have you been training? Thanks in advance.
Reasons why people are coming out with different methods to train your animal is because average families don't have the time and patience to deal with an untrained animal. So they shouldn't have a pet? I agree, however, this is why there are so many animals in humane societies and shelters. People push others to own animals to save them from shelter type environments and give them homes but, REALISTICALLY, this person has either no idea how much this animal needs to be tended to, they expect the animal to be a quick leaner or its already trained. I saved my dog from a kill shelter because 3 owners didn't want to deal with her puppy behavior (nipping, high energy, jumping and barking). I have done some of the training with her patiently but, I can't be around all the time to keep it up. FAST and affordable methods are what people are looking for. This collar is not CRUEL the owner however, improperly trained on how to use the collar can accidentally use this collar wrong making it a CRUEL situation. You don't need to use any brut force with this collar, just small tugs so the dog can understand what you want it to do.GEEZE people worse than facebook man.
i think its because animals are like humans, we are different in many ways and need a different styles of approach, some need prongs and some don't, but what really sucks is the people who think they no it all and condemn a method.
this appears to be a Leerburg video with Ed Frawley when he was younger doing the narration and likely the collar handling. he is a true dog expert and police dog handler.
While they don't choke as such.. if they're fit tightly as shown in the video, they will choke. The prongs will cause pain, especially when/if the dogs lungs against it. They don't need to be sharpened to cause pain. If they're so good.. why are they illegal to sell or use in any situation in my country?
This is nothing less than a medieval torture device FOR CLUELESS LAZY PEOPLE who do not want to train their OWN MINDS!! They should never have a dog cos they lack their own mindfulness, this guy is a TOTAL IMBECILE
Prong Collars are cruel. There are always other tools. Front-attachment harnesses, such as the Freedom harness and the Xtradog harness, have a ring at the dog's chest and another at the shoulders for the leash, so physics is on your side. When the leash tightens, the dog usually turns, pivoting around the leash clip. These harnesses can be quite effective and are my go-to tool for dogs that are hard to control in a flat collar or regular rear-attachment harness.
Cat Lover suuuurre, but they also create health problems for the dog, since they do not allow the dog to complete its stride, therefore creating an unatural stride, therefore creating lifelong health issues for the dog, so the prong is actually safer if used correctly than even the front clip harness
the prong collar get easily released I heard you need to have a back up collar to prevent a dog from running out the streets and get run over. If that’s the case then there not probably make need improvement not all people know I have heard that people have lost their dogs for that
I totally agree with you. I´m so sick at people who think that they have to hurt the dogs that are "impossible" to show who´s the boss. It´s hard to believe that we live in the year 2014...
ShatteredxMarie head haltis are amazing, they cause no discomfort at all as they only put pressure on the bridge of the nose, if your so worried about comfort buy a proper harness then simple... or if you do want a colour that slightly tighens but doesnt chock get a martingale-style collar
tigger1995Magi Haltis are much better than for example prongs but can still hurt the dog pretty bad. I recommend VGW harnesses. I'm not sure if they are called the same in English than in Sweden... Anyway, it's a harness that prevents your dog to pull without pain. www.petexpertise.com/dog-collars-dog-harnesses/no-pull-dog-harnesses/easy-walk-no-pull-harness.html?sef_rewrite=1 Please, take a look! You still have to train your dog not to pull, its not like a prong collar that you need to do one or two "corrections" with. As soon as your dog pulls, you stand absolutely still and waits for it to turn to you. Then you can start walking again. This takes a time but is sooo worth it! You get a happier dog and a happier walk.
they can only hurt if you stupidly pull back their heads with force or use it incorrectly which i rarely see. it never hurt my dog and is quite calming for him due to the pressure that is put on the top of the nose which would normally happen when the mother picks up her pups by the scruff. My first dog i trained on a plain regular harness, nothing special, she pulled all the time and all it took was time and patience and now she just walks by my side (sometimes without the lead) My other dog was incredibly upfront with other dogs and also pulled anyway, i used the halti and the first day i went out he walked by my side ignoring the dogs and haven't had much issues with him since. I work in a veterinary clinic and have found that dogs still pull on these harnesses any way.. people look for ways to just magically solve the issue and dont realise that training is still involved. i think too that dogs should be trained to walk with the leads on the collar, some dogs when im at the vet often freakout when i use the slip lead because they arent used to being walked with something pulling around their neck
A prong collar for Q Chihuahua??????????? A Chihuahua should be walked on A harness at all times because of their delicate necks. you are disgusting to even think about walking A Chihuahua on A regular collar never mind a prong collar which for any dog is animal abuse. you are disgusting.
You think a chi couldn't easily break his back if he's untrained and lunges forward to hard while wearing a harness or possibly hurting his shoulder bones or chest bones?
Only uneducated ppl think prong collars are cruel or evil ... If they hurt the dog they would be banned! Wen used correctly they are totally safe and will NOT hurt your dog! I have just started using 1 on my dog and he LOVES it! Iv tried all sorts of collars, harnesses etc and he hated them all ... Trying to get him ready for a walk was like a mini wrestling contest, but now when I get his lead and collar he does a quick spin of excitement then sits calmly with his tail waggin! EDUCATED YOURSELF
Tally Weinberg yeah, but it shouldn't come down to having spikes in their neck, it should be training really!! plus the spikes on their throat is worse than a normal collar
It works because it hurts! I also have this prong collar, but i use it the other way, because here are a lot of dogs and would attack my gsd's neck, that's why I used it the other way, it won't hurt my dog but would hurt the mouth of the dog that attacks my dog
It is recommended to put a connection between that and a flat collar on the event of them coming apart. Which I can't even imagine happening. Maybe you had the quick release type. The real deal will not come apart of correctly fitted, I'm speaking of the Herm Sprenger and no other
Poor animals!Any dog that needs a Prong,or Choke collar simply has a lazy owner who cannot be bothered, does not have the patience and understanding of dog training.Anyone who suggests using them is no different. If you cannot love, respect and train a dog,its easy,DO NOT GET ONE:These collars should be banned!
+Graham Shepherd That's incorrect. They work great if you need a dog to work during extreme distractions. It reminds the dog that they have to focus. And the collar isn't mean, it's better than a regular or "choke" chain because it mimics the moms bite. If you know how to use it, it doesn't hurt at all.
Why do police forces and military not use them if they are as good as you say.I attend a Dog Training school in germany, they are banned, the training on offer to distract ,even under extreme conditions is attainable without these things.
+Graham Shepherd for one if training a dog was easy there wouldnt be a need for this product and every dog on this earth would be trained and it wouldnt cost thousands of dollars to have the dog trained. you are a idiot who thinks their opinion is superior to others when in fact its just shit coming out of a ass hole. oh and i just would love to see how much ease it would be for you to train a mastiff any breed of mastiff with out one of these collars. fuck you and fuck your opinion cause it means and matters to no one but you
It´s depressing to see what humen has to invent to get their dogs to obey... What about buiding a good relationship with your dog and train it because it wants to? I could NEVER hurt my dog to obey, she does things for me because she wants to. The most important thing is that your dog trusts you and that can never happen if you hurt your dog. Nad for the people who thinks "Well, you only have a golden retriever, we have to use prong collars on hard, tuff breeds" I have a golden but I work with many of the tuffer breeds with positive training with great success. It takes a little bit longer but it´s built with trust and love. THANK GOD THAT PRONG COLLARS ARE ILLEGAL IN SWEDEN.
My knowledge is based on my experience with 5 of my german shepherds and part owner of a dog training business. I've seen the effectiveness of these collars firsthand. A balanced trainer uses all tools available depending on the dog. Not every dog does well with purely positive training which is what i guess you're referring to. We see lots of dogs that failed at that kind of training. I prefer to listen to the best dog TRAINERS in the world who have no problem with a correctly used prong collar like a Herm Sprenger which has rounded edges, not the cheap crap in a pet store.
dang! what do you do? take your dog out for tea and steak and then go down on him or her to get what you want? think that's what they do in Sweden, after all the country has no negatives right?
+gitsurfer27 With my golden retriever I went through 27 weeks of dog training steadily increasing in advancement. Using those same methods I attempted to train our new dog. He has zero food drive, give him a treat and he spits it out. He has zero toy drive. Even his favorite one he doesn't respond to well at all. He doesn't really care to please. Walking with him was impossible once he got older and gained weight. After the second time he pulled so bad he injured my hip I went to the store and picked up a prong collar. I used it plus his harness the first time out. On his first ever walk with it on, we went from a dog that pulled so hard he flattened himself to the ground trying to go when I stopped to a dog who calmly walked at my side. I pulled on it once. Since then, we have been for walks and hikes where we encountered people, kids, dogs, random wildlife. I have not had a single problem. The only time he gets that one on is when we are going for long walks, and at that time he has both a harness and the prong collar. A leash connects to each. The only time tension is put on the prong collar is if he catches a scent and tries to go after it, which happens maybe once every few walks. He now walks nicely and listens better on walks. So tell me, how am I torturing my animal? Yes people can use them to abuse dogs. But they can also use regular collars too to do the same thing. If a human wishes to harm an animal they will. But used properly it can be a great training tool. And yes, I have put it on my neck and pulled.
And one more thing. Many writes that it´s nothing wrong if you use it right... So, it´s totally okey if I scare and hurt my children, IF I´m doing it the right way..? Eeeh..
prong collar stinks. i use chokes . and i know how to use it it is called slack slip colars. you are depending on the collar and not your own learning. peeple take of to may links making constant excesive pinching. i am 58 . i used them but after 30 years of training come back and tell me it is better than the ago old slip . now if the prong is fit right and loos and never let the dog pull . b/c some dogs keep pulling thinking they are getting away from the pinching a slip is a quik light snap nd quil loosen. the rest is your agility. you want a apparatus to do the training for you, i can use a martingale which is made like a prong with no prongs which is how the military uses with belgium Malinois i know b/c i trained for military and started police malinois units. so people take these people with a big grain of salt. this is such ols school then . he just said it" excuse me what do you want me to do again, and again, and again. give yourself a break and stop being a self made professional
I have a large GSD who looks like the one in this video but bigger. I used to use a prong collar on him and attach a retractable 25' lead onto it so I could train him close or let him go off and do his business when I allowed. One day he took off after a cat around a corner. I wasn't paying close enough attention and before I knew it he ran out of lead and his full 100+ pound body slammed into that prong collar. Suffice it to say it embedded itself into his neck on the very top and also on the bottom and tore his neck up. He would not allow me to approach him to take it off because of the pain. I took him to an ER the next day and they had to shave his neck and prescribe heavy duty antibiotics after removing the prong collar from his neck. It was UGLY as hell. My poor buddy! Of course I no longer use a prong collar on him. I find I don't need to despite of what happened. You can train a dog with or without using a prong collar. Don't get me wrong: I am not against prong collars necessarily. But be friking careful! They can and WILL tear your dogs neck up if he's LARGE like mine is and it only takes a couple of seconds and happens before you know it. So given the choice (and it was a hard way to learn), would I rather use a collar that can injure him severly, or one that can't? I think you know my answer. Live and learn.
***** yes, u don't really fully understand but thanks anyway. I agree with most of what you say though. He is fine and getting better all the time with obedience. He was just a young crazy badass before and I didn't know how to handle him well enough. But as far as prong collars go I don't think they are ever necessary at this point. If you have patience you can train a dog without a prong collar. My buddy is proof now. Why take the risk of injury. Surely u must understand that when one has a very large adolescent badass GSD and is not a professional trainer its hard to handle them. Shit happens. You deal with it. I'll never use a prong collar on any dog again. It's unnecessary totally. You take the time to bond with them. If u do, you don't need to force them to do anything. They will respond. And yes sometimes that means you give in to what they want, imagine that. In the end the dog knows you care and respects that and responds to about anything. My boy is proof. :)
Nc Sparky I hate to say this and I'm not saying it to be mean, but that was your fault and you should always be aware of your surroundings when walking a large breed dog like a GSD and using the retractable leashes and a prong collar is a huge NO NO. You must always be in control when using the prong collar and those retractable leashes are the total opposite of a controllable leash and are meant for dogs who are well trained on a leash. Though I've never had to use a prong collar with any of the dogs I've ever owned, I do know how they work and educating yourself is the best way to understanding how to properly train your dogs even if you don't or wont use those methods.
this sadly was your fault you never use retractable leads with prong collars only 4ft to 6ft leads and learn to watch your pet you could have cost him his life
It doesn't cause pain. Apparently you have done zero study on these collars. Choke collars including martingales and flat collars CRUSH their tracheas if they pull. Dumb ass....
in europe, we call it abuse, dont use one, ever, not effective and cruel, would you like someone to use this on your child? if no then dont do it to dogs.
Tom Moran There's nothing wrong with prong collars. It's the PERSON. If it's use correctly it will not hurt the dog. Collars, gentle leaders and leashes can be deadly if use the wrong way. So don't blame the tool, blame the person that abuses their dogs with it.
I feel sorry for all those dogs in this video! Shock collar & Prong collar at once is pretty disgusting! And a prong collar on tiny dog breeds and puppies(and with a loop around the belly)is ridiculous and in my eyes animal abuse! A smart person trains an animal with love, patience and respect, and doesn't rely on painful tools and techniques. Those a training techniques that belong in the past and abusive and damaging. Have seen dogs becoming aggressive because of that.
You have no clue how it works.. im a woman and tested it out. It doesnt hurt. Dogs will rip your face off snd youd be the first to scream put it down. Dogs differ greatly many a dumb owner who went to pet my dog are thankful for that collar. He loves people he does not like being touched.
If it doesn't hurt, for what are those long metal prongs for? Certainly not for decoration. And pain will make the dog even more aggressive. Ever had long lasting pain you couldn't stop? It will make the coolest person become at least grumpy and depressed. Ever thought that those behavior issues you have with your dog come from that collar and outdated training techniques? Some countries have banned such tools because they create dangerous dogs and are considered as inhumane. If you really like your dog you should perhaps try out different methods. If you want I can try to help.
Christopher Johnnson look... It catches their attention and thats it. no more then spanking a child on the butt.. the prongs are not sharp. My dog has no issue ripping another dog who pisses him off to shreds... That collar...Has saved me alot of grief and its for no more then an hour max. My dog has a fur coat and can be aggressive. Im pretty relaxed and have skin.. Im a eimo snd ir doesnt hurt me.. Its a non issue. Focus on actual issues verses psychoanalyzing a dog collar.
How to put a prong collar : DONT put a prong collar. :) People that know how to handle a dog FOR REAL dont need a prong or any kind of pain on their dog.
I'm guessing you own a Shi-Tzu or some other tiny dog breed. Let's see how patient you are with a 90+lbs pitbull or staffie when they are constantly pulling at their leash. Once your arm goes numb, you are going through a bag of treats per walk trying to praise good moments, and you loose your voice with the "NO"s, you will understand why some large breed dogs need a reminder to pay attention to what you are saying. Outdoors can be highly distracting. Prong collars are meant to remind the dog to pay attention and stay close. They aren't punishment. And unless you are an absolute pansy, they don't hurt. Put one on your neck. It's uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt at the tension levels you are supposed to apply them with. They also aren't permanent, and you are still supposed to use positive methods when the dog does what you want while training with a prong collar. They are a training tool, most dogs only need them for a few months to understand to stay close to the owner. Don't be ignorant.
57ashdot Actualy I own a 40kg Berger Blanc Suisse (I think this is around 80 pounds?) . He is a male and with a very srtong mind. He used to pull when I first got him. BUT with time and patience I tought him how to behave outside. He now walks near me and never pulls... I never used a choke chain on him.You don't need a choke chain when you know your dog,you spend time to understand his behavior and be patient with him/her.
how to properly use a prong collar: step 1: grab it in your hand and make a tight fist step 2: chuck it into the trashcan step 3: admire your work and train with patience and respect instead Whether it chokes or not is irrelevant, it works because it HURTS. Better than a choke chain by far, but it hurts the dog nonetheless.
Thats funny because I put it on MY neck and it didnt hurt when yanked. My dog will rip your face off if you piss him off. I make sure he doesnt with a gentle tug. People are very bigoted against this collar. He was choking on regular collars.
I put it on my neck and my arm, and it caused quite a bit of discomfort. I wouldn't describe it as severe, but it's pain one way or another. It can make the dog behave but will not benefit the dog in the slightest.
***** have you ever used one on yourself? It's not just the amount of pain, it's the principle of the thing. Contrary to popular belief, it is not effective at mimicking a mother dog's bite. It is a stressful way to teach a dog and training that way actually impedes the learning process. It causes the dog to react rather than think clearly.
@@turkeyburglarjones6148 a lot of reactive dogs don't give a CRAP about treats when they are outside.
I highly endorse using the prong collar. I have 2 large mastiff puppies. My trainer recommended getting the prong collars to correct the pulling. Thank you Sweet Baby Jesus! - I now walk them instead of being pulled and dragged by them.
Ur stupid. It corrected the pulling and my dog no longer requires it
They are far kinder on a dog's neck than regular training collars.
Ty very much
Birch Wind Yess 👏🏼🙌🏼
Funny that objection usually comes from the type of people who think judgement based on appearance is bad :^)
Heck, if you ask me, walking a dog that doesn't know how to walk properly is far more abusive than using a prong.
I love the prong! thanks for all your help!!
Rhazhyl Agreed
prong collars are basically harmless. Ive wore one once in a bdsm enviorment.
JimmyR0b0t That's the spirit. I am sure, you liked it. You should post a video.
specialistofsomekind There is, just search xtube or motherless
Kaitlyn Hernandez yeah cuz it hurts him that's why he's ""behaving"" he's not behaving he's in pain cuz his owner thinks its good to dig spikes in his neck to stop him pulling cut they can't train their dog
it should be done with voice training
I us the collar as a training tool and as it is recommended it's not wrong to use and even police and search and rescue use this collor
And a prong collor can have rubber tip protection put on and that's what I have I use to believe they were cruel and hurt the dog but after much research and asking different trainers what techniques I can use they all recommended for me use the prong collar
Very good info, thanks Leerburg :)
I need 1 of these for my dog badly
If you are thinking of using one of these, stop and read blogs.rspca.org.uk/insights/2014/04/01/pinch-collars-and-why-they...
or dogstrust.org.uk/mediacentre/newsreleases/pr14prongcollars.aspx
If you agree that pinch/prong collars are just plain wrong then come and sign our petition at saynotothepinch.co.uk/sign-here and help us to ban these things in the UK.
Cesar Millan has taught us that
LOL!! He's used BOTH!! Never mind the fact that there are MUCH better trainers than Cesar!!!!
my german shepherd got out of her prong collar just now. she ran around the park and i feared we wouldn't get her back. luckily, she always stayed by us and walked all the way home. i love the prong collar but can you tell me why it broke free? she wasn't pulling much at all. it's not loose but it's also not really tight on her. thinking about going with a harness.
My prong collar is messed up.... theres a "pincher" thats twisted up thats connected to the hoop .... can i still use it or i have to fix it before i put it on my dog, i dont want it to cause harm if its all twisted up
Just unclip it in the middle and straighten it up
if you think prongs are abusive, take a look at chokers. prongs are much safer than chokers, and chokers damage the dog a whole lot more base on studies, prongs don't,, unless you abuse/misuse it. they don't hurt, try it on yourself, they act like a mother dog's bite to their pups when correcting them,, not a bite to kill them. if you try it on your arm, it'll just feel like a nibble
Video is broken just at the crucial point where you're explaining how to connect the lead.
this appears to be a Leerburg video with Ed Frawley when he was younger doing the narration and likely the collar handling. he is a true dog expert and police dog handler.
While they don't choke as such.. if they're fit tightly as shown in the video, they will choke. The prongs will cause pain, especially when/if the dogs lungs against it. They don't need to be sharpened to cause pain.
If they're so good.. why are they illegal to sell or use in any situation in my country?
Zab Nilsson What country are you in?
Must be in Europe. Everything is illegal there.
And I just realized that this comment was from 6 years ago
Just going TO say that you are teaching your dog outside in and not inside out. Let's see what happens when you take that prong off?
the prong collar get easily released I heard you need to have a back up collar to prevent a dog from running out the streets and get run over. If that’s the case then there not probably make need improvement not all people know I have heard that people have lost their dogs for that
If you have to hurt your dog to train it, you really should not own a dog, buy yourself a chai pet, a pet rock etc.
Prong collars have been proven to be more humane than head haltis, choker chains, and nylon collars.
Anyway, it's a harness that prevents your dog to pull without pain. www.petexpertise.com/dog-collars-dog-harnesses/no-pull-dog-harnesses/easy-walk-no-pull-harness.html?sef_rewrite=1
Please, take a look!
My first dog i trained on a plain regular harness, nothing special, she pulled all the time and all it took was time and patience and now she just walks by my side (sometimes without the lead)
My other dog was incredibly upfront with other dogs and also pulled anyway, i used the halti and the first day i went out he walked by my side ignoring the dogs and haven't had much issues with him since.
My chihuahua pulls sometimes would a prong collar work for her
Yes, but get an extra small one. You want the gentlest strength you can get.
+Crimson Kyoko so u would rather abuse him/her by using A BARBARIC prong collar??????
It's not abuse if it's used right. Are you one of those people who think spanking their kid is abusive too?
You're supposed to clip into both rings
Only uneducated ppl think prong collars are cruel or evil ... If they hurt the dog they would be banned! Wen used correctly they are totally safe and will NOT hurt your dog! I have just started using 1 on my dog and he LOVES it! Iv tried all sorts of collars, harnesses etc and he hated them all ... Trying to get him ready for a walk was like a mini wrestling contest, but now when I get his lead and collar he does a quick spin of excitement then sits calmly with his tail waggin! EDUCATED YOURSELF
They don't pull because it hurts them
i like the way it works I just don't like how the dog has to put up with spikes going into their neck!
Tally Weinberg yeah, but it shouldn't come down to having spikes in their neck, it should be training really!! plus the spikes on their throat is worse than a normal collar
That's an uneducated comment. Obviously u don't understand the use of a prong collar or how they're utilized.
You neglected to add, "for lazy dog trainers".
not really
My dogs prong collar is soo hard to open. You cant really pinch it its heavy metal.
Prong collar's do not choke even when the correction is made! When used correctly a dog wont even pull on the lead!
These collars,in the wrong hands have hurt animals and caused great pain and damage.
All choke collars and flat collars destroy dogs necks and wind pipes all day every day PROPERLY used
good video but audio is bad halfway through.
It works because it hurts! I also have this prong collar, but i use it the other way, because here are a lot of dogs and would attack my gsd's neck, that's why I used it the other way, it won't hurt my dog but would hurt the mouth of the dog that attacks my dog
No. It may n0ot hurt, but it chokes, think about if someone put that on you and forced you to go for a walk. how would ya like that, huh/
AnimalJamRoxx it doesnt choke. it evenly distributes pain. i advise you stay away from r+ trainers and PETA
And then the prong collar opens and snap you cause an accident! Not my thing! Happenend as a puppy, not risking it anymore
It is recommended to put a connection between that and a flat collar on the event of them coming apart. Which I can't even imagine happening. Maybe you had the quick release type. The real deal will not come apart of correctly fitted, I'm speaking of the Herm Sprenger and no other
is the glitchy part just my computer?
It’s happening with my phone too
Poor animals!Any dog that needs a Prong,or Choke collar simply has a lazy owner who cannot be bothered, does not have the patience and understanding of dog training.Anyone who suggests using them is no different.
+Graham Shepherd
Very stupid comment. This could be @powered by a toy dog....
Why do police forces and military not use them if they are as good as you say.I attend a Dog Training school in germany, they are banned, the training on offer to distract ,even under extreme conditions is attainable without these things.
+Graham Shepherd I believe that police dogs are trained early. What about a German Shepard that is 5 years old and pulls?
You are just another uneducated dog owner. Brainwashed!!
+gsdsteve Okey, so what is your knowledge based on? Mine is based on proven methods.
THESE ARE SO CRUEL DONT USE THEM!!
they aren't cruel
DONT OWN DOGS IF YOUR GOING TO TORTURE THEM!!! FUCKING MONSTERS!!
I've seen many pictures of dogs with huge holes bored into there necks that disagree.
Dude i use prong collar on my dog from 4 years its male german shepherd and have no problems at all.
gitsurfer27 those pictures are misleading. If you believe everything you see on the internet then you need to reevaluate your use of the internet.
Torture dogs??? Wth? Ive worn one... they don't hurt...
Eeeh..
You don't punish your kids the right way? Scare them by taking their phones, internet etc away? And not beating them within an inch of their life?
prong collar stinks. i use chokes . and i know how to use it it is called slack slip colars. you are depending on the collar and not your own learning. peeple take of to may links making constant excesive pinching. i am 58 . i used them but after 30 years of training come back and tell me it is better than the ago old slip . now if the prong is fit right and loos and never let the dog pull . b/c some dogs keep pulling thinking they are getting away from the pinching a slip is a quik light snap nd quil loosen. the rest is your agility. you want a apparatus to do the training for you, i can use a martingale which is made like a prong with no prongs which is how the military uses with belgium Malinois i know b/c i trained for military and started police malinois units. so people take these people with a big grain of salt. this is such ols school then . he just said it" excuse me what do you want me to do again, and again, and again. give yourself a break and stop being a self made professional
Though I've never had to use a prong collar with any of the dogs I've ever owned, I do know how they work and educating yourself is the best way to understanding how to properly train your dogs even if you don't or wont use those methods.
this sadly was your fault you never use retractable leads with prong collars only 4ft to 6ft leads and learn to watch your pet you could have cost him his life
Yes
You used a cheap collar.
YEAH1 PRONG COLLARS ARE SO CRUEL BAN THEM EVERYONE
Yes. That is why it works. The dog is trying to avoid the pain. This is an outdated, completely unnecessary collar.
I love that these collars are banned in Sweden. Training with causing pain is for assholes that lack real mental power.
WELL SAID!! 100% AGREE 👍 I salute you
It doesn't cause pain.
It's fine.
Yeah, if they were running off, getting in traffic, lost, etc. Much rather.
Tom Moran There's nothing wrong with prong collars. It's the PERSON. If it's use correctly it will not hurt the dog. Collars, gentle leaders and leashes can be deadly if use the wrong way. So don't blame the tool, blame the person that abuses their dogs with it.
It's abuse if you misuse it...
id use less links on the prong on you with extra pull to shake of that shit your wearing on your pic
Christopher Johnnson FALSE FALSE FALSE.
Like others have said, you are clearly un-educated about this training tool
Well, then explain it to me. Maybe you can enlighten me what's so great about it!
People that know how to handle a dog FOR REAL dont need a prong or any kind of pain on their dog.
Prong collars have been proven to be more humane and effective than head haltis, choker chains, and nylon collars when used correctly.
MagmaSedusa well good thing this isn't a choke chain. So nothing to worry about.
how to properly use a prong collar:
step 1: grab it in your hand and make a tight fist
step 2: chuck it into the trashcan
step 3: admire your work and train with patience and respect instead
Whether it chokes or not is irrelevant, it works because it HURTS. Better than a choke chain by far, but it hurts the dog nonetheless.
10000000000000% completely true! :)
Your comment is ignorance at its finest
