- Gomi Designs, in Brighton, England, turns non-recyclable plastic waste into Bluetooth speakers that are infinitely recyclable. Its aim is to stop plastic waste being incinerated or going to landfill. It collects plastic packaging, bubble-wrap and cling film from local companies and residents, as this type of plastic waste is impossible to recycle and it's not accepted by local authorities.

How Nonrecyclable Plastic Bags Are Being Turned Into Speakers
How non-recyclable plastic bags are recycled
Bri10 dammit you beat me to this comment
Non-recyclable plastic = too expensive to recycle since it's cheaper to buy fresh, new plastic
it’s harmful for the environment, this helps a lot
Deep question 😁
0:46 he has a large bag with 99.7% blue bags inside. then happens to walk in front of a blue bag. so the story is you go to the lake or beach, throw away blue bags like crazy, then 10 minutes later you pick them all up to justifyingly say you use recycled plastic on your products? smart.
Maybe shopping plastic bags could be recycled into shopping baskets that could be used for a long time for continuous shopping rather than being discarded after a single use.
Why only speaker though? You can make so many things!
I mean it is something that people want and more people will do different things
it has to be cool and like hipster shit, unfortunately...
Poly Shannon What is stopping you from doing it? 😏 That guy made a consistent business model with free material - It’s a win win situation
Molds are expensive
It said in the video, it is also being made to a lot of other furnitures 5:03
Poisonous fumes and no air filtering or anything ...
klaas ericha Some people do get a kick out of it 😏
I was thinking this too. It's possible that this technique may not be ass eco-friendly as it seems to be :/?
Not even pocket friendly
They are not burning no flames or fumes
Melting not burning
I could envision some mighty fine countertops made from this after vacuum impregnating with resin and polishing.
I'd certainly buy that for a dollar!
We did this as kids growing up in the Caribbean. We melted bags to make cricket ball.
inhaling burning plastic :l oh noo
@@sownheard had no idea it was bad for our health. Oh well.
@@sownheard he'll live lol it's not the worst thing in the world guys
@@HavanaSyndrome69 correct, i look back at those days fondly. Nothing like a curious child learning to work with their hands.
They should do this in the rest of the world too :)
Whilst admirable, it does appear to be extremely inefficient.
'whilst' !!!
Who taught you that word?
@@josephwatson8448 it's English, you should try it someday. Instead of criticising, dickhead! en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/whilst

Yes, like most small companies or basically any operation getting of the ground.
Umm.... ya how do you think most 'start ups' begin? 🤦♀️Whilst I'm sure they'd love to have an easy process, you work with the budget you have until your profits grow, and you can streamline your assembly process better. Spend too much up front=faster debt. Not 🚀🧪🔬😅
it is because they don't mechanical technic to make it easier.
if they could get their hand on an injection machine to make it go faster, this would become more effective.
ive seen a couple smart machine people made.
there is one where the guy turn a lot of plastic bottle into beam for fence of railing, 2x2 studs
*Single-use plastics must be banned.*
100% bio-degradable plastic bags from corn starch are cheap and they exist.
One can also *mix the plastic with fine clay powder.*
Such mixes have a beautiful feel to them.
Then why aren't companies using them. I just checked online and they are not that expensive. Just 0.01/0.02 USD per bag. I think big companies can afford that much at least right?
The thing with bio-degradeable is that the starch or similar materials are used inbetween polymer molecules to help the material break down, which still leaves microplastic particles afterwards that cause a lot of problems of their own. Something more radical - like significantly reducing all plastic use - is necessary.
They really do, they feel so soft
Hemp plastics, biodegradable in 50 years
@@shampoable todays plastic made from oil but you can make plant based plastic like hemp plastic biodegradable in 50 years
I thought they would make speaker drivers, but they made speaker enclosures.
how in the god damn would you make drivers with only plastic lol
@@Ardeact Speaker cones could be made additionally. As I pointed out in my comment, it is only the housing cabinet and grill that is created, not the whole speaker.
I find it interesting and quite noble. Somebody give these people a hydraulic press.
They are using a hydraulic press in the video.

Lacquer it to get a really nice glossy finish and it would almost look like marble!
This might not work well with all the different types of Plastics that would cause a chemical reaction with the softener in the plastics.
good, now i have ideas about phone casings, tables, shoes, and maybe buckets
It's faster to just do it with injection mold machine. It's the same process.
but then you dont get the colors like this
@@BKdefr with that type of plastic, you will. It's harder to melt and doesn't mix easily even after being melted.
@@MichaelHarto but you would probably still get streaks starting from the inflow, i guess
@@BKdefr the streaks are short and ended up blotchy when it's injected to the mold
he probably does'nt have the money for one yet but yeah i was thinking the same thing
When melting down plastic you should really be ventilating the area well and wearing breathing protection.
Why not just convert into 3d printer filament?
Damn I hope that's the future of recycling
I want to buy a plastic bottle and throw it in my 3D printer after for raw material
it's stringy, it warps due to extremely high shrinkage, and it has weak layer bonding at printing temperatures
Not every plastic that is used for these bags, is suitable for printing filaments. However there are i think some variations of 3D Printer filaments made from recycled plastic.
People already do that. Search for Precious Plastic on youtube.
A really innovative idea. People love color to their accessories, so you can make jewelry boxes, photo frames, pens, boards, bags, tables and chairs and what not! Keep up the good work 😊
Non-recyclable plastic is recycled... what a time to be alive. 🙌
I guess you could say the sound is «trash»... no? Ok ill leave
HAHAHHA nice one😂
k bye

raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

If you make something out of non recycling materials than are they really non recyclable? 🤔.
My spirit is lifted seeing someone, anyone attempting to reuse single use plastic. You're going to hate me now with my next comment. It's simply not enough.
Starting somewhere, here with a simple product, is a start at least.
Someday, hopefully, there may be a real destination for the millions of tons of all single use products. Thanks for making an effort.
You can go far beyond just speakers
@logsarefun Why are we not funding this
@@martinpajunk3570 why dont we have hub fund it
logsarefun wtf? Lol
the guy is in his dads toolshed and probably broke his piggy bank to get that one mold...
as for dildos... never going to happen, cant use dirty plastic of you will get ass cancer! they cant even make video game controllers cause holding it for hours every day will give your kids hand cancer and dick cancer when they jerk off after COD
So they aren't non recyclable?
I'm so happy to see this great recycling project, we need more of this in the our world.
I would like one of those speakers!
Looks like a lot of fun to make them. I think a Dremel and router would help the process a lot!
It didn't get turned into a speaker it got turned into a box in which speakers are housed
People nowadays don't want just a lame ass black speaker, so why not give it a cover? Helps add the price of the speaker.
@
Holo Sxope BOI
It got turned into a box in which drivers are housed. Called a speaker.
They are called drivers and as a whole is a speaker dumbass
The excess dough is removed and recycled

Also, £300 for this??
Yeah that's a lot
Wow I was thinking $80 tops
Orion Rodriguez right? And we don't even know how well the speakers work.
Price point does seem high, comparatively.
@@miscellaneousNsuch I don't think he did the electronics. He just did the casing.
That's a lot of electricity use for each unit 😬
Great idea though
I didn't get out of this how hot or how long... But if a kwh is 0.25 and you need like... 3.... Well. I'll be more worried about the fumes.
Love this idea guys... Fabulous job!!! 👍
Y'all needs to do this on phones and phone cases and everything. Build bricks with it etc. It's plastic.
MySecretSolitude bricks with plastic is not safe bro, in cases of fire burning you will fucked up.
@@firall.ardunda maybe at least some sort of giant plastic monument/memorial sort of architecture?🤔
@@firall.ardunda Plastic furnishings, clothing and other plastic materials are excessive ubiquitous in homes, so what's one more thing?
Great idea! I have one concern, though. I've heard that plastic releases toxic chemicals when heated. Will that harm the people working on it and/or the environment in any way? If you actually know something about this, please inform me.
yes, the fumes are poisonous and can cause nausea, headaches and vomiting, maybe even long term illnesses. But he is too cool to worry about any of that.. also he is just releasing these gasses out in the environment without filtration probably...
@@Helvetica09 Ok thanks for explaining that, but what do you mean by "releasing gases without filtration"?
@@whatsinaname7289 He probably just opens the windows. The toxic gasses can get out in the air. That is why factories have filtration systems to make the air less toxic
No one here has a clue what they're talking about. Bags are made from low density polyethylene. Ethylene is the gas that comes from ripening fruit. The whole thing is a non sustainable bit of feel good unless people are actually paying 300 quid for 50 quid speakers. As far as the health risks go, no, there is no problem with heating LDPE to 200 Celcius.
@@Helvetica09 is talking out their arse on a subject they have no knowledge of whatsoever.
This is a fabulous example of a great idea followed by less than adequate knowledge to accomplish your goal successfully AND safely.
This guy could use some intel on safety...Sadly, he may find himself on this planet for less time then he should be because of what he’s doing.
Now that's good way to actually recycle nonrecyclable things
Recycling the unrecyclable
*Then they throw the speaker*
Ye
Even though I'm not a fan of the marble color this is still pretty great. And you can always spray paint the speaker enclosure black or something.
Looks pretty cool
Free plastic
The colors are gorgeous !!
This is not eco-friendly. This process is incredibly inefficient and wastes an incredible amount of energy. These are for people who want to pay lots of money to feel like they're saving the world.
Would it be possible to make 100% recycled phones?
no.. phone circuits have platinum and gold, a lot of expensive material will be wasted
You can recycle it, but generally gold recyclers make gold bars and keep them for profit. Even if someone was willing to recycle it, the process of recycling gold from old components is difficult and expensive.
@@cooIguy Pretty sure he is referring to just the phone case, not the components. LOL
This is a true solution to our garbage problem. Not legislative is always best.
The manufacturing of that single steel mold they use for the speakers, has polluted more than all of those plastic bags would, combined
Burning plastics and plastic waste has a larger impact short term. Also, casting metal doesn't cause much pollution compared to plastics. Metal doesn't burn like plastic does; it melts. If you burn plastics, there is now plastics in the air that will settle in our environment.
Coal or most other organic fuels to heat a furnace or crucible, produce carbon based products, which isn't harmful at all.
If it is made of waste then why it is so expensive 300 pounds ??
they could've spray painted them or something to make them look better
Money Money spray paint isn’t eco friendly
@şaî :ļ Looks like crap, if that's good...
Now first follow a course in speaker enclosure design and then find out what is all wrong with this. It is a waste of good drivers (W100S and SC 10 N).
Not into a speaker.... Into a outer box of a speaker...🦍
Great job chaps, but instead of trying to create items for these non recycling plastics, go to the the companies and stop them from creating these types of plastics. But every bit helps..I guess.
Because that has worked every time...

Yeah just keep breathing those fumes in boys. 🤦🏻♂️
It's obviously ventilated
@@edgarsjuskevics6628 yes... ventilated INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. How the hell is that good for the environment????
What do you think would happen to the plastic bags, idiot...
This is a very good idea of recycling plastic bags
Wow, melting plastic down into plastic and then moulding it into something made out of plastic, impressive.
Awesome.. But if they are making speakers out of them, they are CLEARLY recyclable. No?
I think it comes down to being able to be made into a uniform pellets or granules that can be fully melted back down to a liquid form. This plastic is melting to a dough consistency that would not work in the injection molding systems used for most plastics.
It's these people and many others who are absolute legends.
Very beautiful!!! My desk top looks like this on accident. I'm proud of it. I wonder what else this company makes. Great idea!!
About the fumes: he probably melts at a sweet spot. Melting for most plastics starts at 100C, while only the most volatile of plastics emit fumes at 120C.
Wasabi Thumbs oh... I just made a comment complaining about that lmao
Good lads!! Looks wicked and solves a problem!! 👊🏻👊🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Great. Give every human 50000 speakers and it may take care of the plastic issue.
the person in charge with the title cant find the difference between a speaker and a speaker BOX
Whell they put electronics in it
That opening was so satisfying!
They just basically broke the concept of non recyclable

Idc if ur tagalog
It's a very good development.
So many ways to make this way more efficient. If people don't care about the aesthetics, you can make a lot of things using this method.
is there any carbon emissions being made from this when it is heated?
I doubt it, it looks like it's melted to a temp where there's no fumes
yea prob
Good for the planet, but looks dirty. Maybe add some carbon black to get a more appealing look.
I'd argue some people like that look
@@Approximation would grow dated fast. Black is timeless.
Is it non recyclable anymore?
Didn't expect to hear that AOL instant messenger sound
That looks dangerous... breathing in fumes? No mask?
Yeah but that’s just a speaker box not a speaker. SMH
I am happy that earth still has this kind of people, even though our planet is dying
While this does reduce the plastic waste, does the reduction of plastic in the landfill outweigh the excessive energy used to create these speakers? Think about it. They heat several pounds of aluminum to roughly 300 degrees F, use it once to mold a single part of the speaker case, then throw out all the energy in the aluminum by cooling it in water. Then reheat it to 300F and do it all again.
This idea is amazing
Tiles would be very desirable, maybe locking tiles and I'm guessing they could be primed and sprayed when one becomes tired of the colours.
Great splash back for a kitchen or lengths of trim and flashing
Great job!
Someday invest in this guy! He is on to something bigger than speakers! 🤔♻️😎🤑🤯
Brilliant idea
Thank you !!
And I can already tell they're going to charge 3 times the amount of money it's actually worth

Would you be able to do this in your home oven? Or would it be unsafe?
Actually a good idea to get cheap thick solid plastic, from the looks it seems to be around 10-12mm, how much would it cost to make that out of acrylic sheet
Creativity to next level

Aarti Jain I’m very serious about being eco friendly but I’m gonna have to big pass on this one lmao
And looks ugly af
This is incredible theyre doong great im happy to known they are doing something about it
Personally I think all recyclable products should have a refundable core price meaning when you're finished with your item you can return it to the manufacturer for some kind of refund. If they did this with plastic bags and even soda bottles it would decrease the amount of plastic waste and encourage more people to recycle. I'm not saying this is a perfect plan but it would definitely help. A better plan would be if the government imposed this return fee and set up recycling centers locally where people could return their plastics for a refund. 10 to 15 cent a bottle would not only be an encouragement but I'm sure others would go around collecting these items for this refund like they used to do for aluminum cans in the shopping carts. If every plastic material could be returned for money it would definitely help our environment.
This should be a laaaaaarge scale production model
the idea sounded well, until i saw a close up of the finished product, looks rougher than a brick. bad quality
They just need sanding and sealing
next step should be recyclable components too, but its a really cool idea
recycle: the action or process of converting waste into reusable material.
Brighton, the home of Pew
Can you nuke china they make so much crap
Hahahaha
Insufficient mold pressure and or insufficent placement of material is leading to some surface irregularities and bubbles/divots. Whilst the colour is fun (I make plastic objects from bags too), and the idea good, to be a commercial success this stuff needs machining after moulding. Right now, it looks like a teenagers home project or someone inattentive to detail. I wish you the best of success and good onya for making something useful out of plastic bags.
Mmmmmmm smells good!
can you go here in the Philippines, we have so many plastic bags here in the rivers :D
GENIUS!
So awesome.
Very innovative
Why do they call them non-recyclable when you can do stuff like this? I feel a lot less hopeless now.
This is a true start up bakery, used ovens, garbage for prime materials, don’t even have a cuisinart for mixing the dough. I likes. The fumes tho lol
You know, by the very definition these are recyclable
