Why Is Thailand The World’s Dumping Ground For Plastic And Waste? | Insight | Full Episode

  • Thailand receives over half a million tonnes of imported waste each year, even as its own waterways are clogged with garbage.
The foreign waste is meant to feed Thailand’s plastic recycling industry, but loopholes, false declarations and incorrect handling mean that some of this waste gets illegally dumped instead.
Meanwhile, Thailand itself generates enough plastic waste to keep the recycling plants going, but contamination and improper disposal mean that the material does not make it to the recyclers.
On top of this, the pandemic has added to Thailand’s trash troubles, in the form of disposable food containers and medical waste.
The government has unveiled a roadmap to rid itself of plastic waste by 2030, including a complete ban on imported plastics by 2025. So, how did Thailand become the world’s dumping ground and what can be done?

I live in Thailand. Very little education or care of plastic use. I buy a ice milk tea every day. I bring my own bottle for refill. I see very few doing the same. Each ice milk tea comes with plastic cup / plastic lid / plastic straw and a small plastic carry bag. 7-11 and other stores banned plastic bags - that lasted about 6 weeks. Needs a huge mindset shift here (but then Philippines / Indonesia / Laos / Cambodia /from my travel experiences are worse than here).

The best way to take care of plastic waste is to let manufacturer to be responsible of its waste and have a way to enforce them.

    • @SmileZero
      @SmileZero Рік тому +4

@@lukeheych8708 It's called responsible manufacturing, it only seems insane because we have been indoctrinated for decades that waste is customer's responsibility. And let's not kid ourselves, the costs of managing their waste will still be passed down to customers, but this will encourage them to produce goods with waste in mind, which would penalised irresponsible manufacturing such as single-use products, and/or planned obsolecense.

Their ads back in the day saying plastics are the future and now that future is literally destroying this earth. Go after the businesses that profit off this and implement an order to correct it and require them to see and care for their product throughout it’s life. Profits off destruction of the earth is sickening. Earth gives us life and one day Mother Earth will cease that life too.

Daily consumed milk can be distributed by exclusive milk shops in refrigerators and consumers must be asked to bring steel cans from their houses. Each street can have two small milk shops on its both ends of the road so that residents can walk their way to milk shop or the milk shop person himself gives home delivery to that concerned street only. The services such as selling vegetables, fruits and also provisions can be done by street vendors organisation or a street vendors corporates so that carrying provisions in plastic bags is almost completely avoided at the same time saving purchasing, shopping time for the residents and also saving money on petrol plus reduced inflation due to reduced petrol demand for comsumption to travel by say some 100 residents × one litre per resident in one street.
So one street= 100 ltr petrol saved.
One ward say 100 streets means 10,000 ltrs petrol saved PER DAY PER ward.
If city has say 100 wards in one division, then 10,00,000 ie 10 lakh ltrs petrol per day is saved in one division.
If city has 10 divisions such as North bangalore, south bangalore..... then petrol saved per day in one city = 100 LAKH liters PER DAY..
If India has say 10 major cities like this, then PETROL SAVED PER DAY IN INDIA alone will be 1000 lakh litres.
The world has say 100 such countries like India, then petrol saved by the world in one day alone will be 1,00,000 × 1,00,000 ie 1× 10to the power of 10 ONE LAKH, LAKH litres!!!!!!
This is apart from reducing many, many, many tonnes of plastic waste per day say almost 20 to 30 percent by doing this simple life style correction adoption by everyone.!!!!!!

Any plastic waste must be segregated as well as recycled at the place of its origin ONLY.
Why should America send this to third world countries when it is having vast stretches of its desert lands to set up plastic recycling industry in USA itself. The same goes with UK .but UK is small in size, hence it can look to it's immediate neighbour france or spain that are bigger in size than UK. This will not only reduce unnecessary petrol consumption of transportation but also is a source to reclaiming used resources.. This is as good as saying that I shall keep my house(country) clean and throw the dirt(plastic waste) outside ( other countries in other continents).

    Solution ingredients:
    1. Introduce law for plastic packaging to be priced at £/$/€ 1 per GRAMM
    Yes, just the one ingredient.
    Expected results:
    - Consumers will keep plastics to reuse. We never thow away valuables
    - Companies and corporations will introduce food/drinks dispensers to maximise profits as always
    - The wealthy few to afford £/$/€10 per GRAMM, will pay for cleaning up
    Example:
    2 litres of coca-cola = £/$/€ 3
    1 platic bottle (bottle+cap+labels) weighing 38 gramms = £/$/€ 38
    3+38= £/$/€ 41
I can afford to buy a bottle of coca-cola for £/$/€ 41. And i will keep that bottle safe for years. You can bank on it

@@jbsolife4858 I think his point is that the Philippines is next. The only reason why we were somehow able to escape this mess is because we became a business outsourcing hub rather than an industrial hub (thanks to our English literacy), so foreign investors are here to look for office spaces for their outsourcing operations rather than factories for manufacturing. Unfortunately our neighboring countries aren't fluent in English (except Singapore of course) so they don't have much to offer to foreign investors other than labor workforce to do manufacturing jobs, so these countries suffer from manufacturing waste. But as this documentary suggests, it is only a matter of time before the 1st world countries look for their next prey to dump their trashes to, and any developing country isn't safe so unless the Philippines, by some miracle, finds a way to get out of the 3rd world country status then we could very well be next.
