Yeah, your probably right. Later in this you see that the mom ran away with her son (the main character) while trying to escape the the abusive dad. The dad probably found them and killed the mom in a blind rage while the main character escaped.
What I think the overall story is that the father convinced his wife that they should move into a forest, so their son could grow more freely since he is the only one naked in the family portrait. But after the son saw his father murder a deer, he probably told his mother about it and she decided to run away with her son while he never fully grasped why she did it as he would look around himself confused while wearing pants for the first time. Now the husband is left alone, his heart filling with loneliness and sadness. We do not know if he had a habit of smoking and drinking beforehand but this surely was his way of filling the emptiness. The wife being covered by smoke could represent him blaming her for running away or for betraying him, while he doesn't blame the son.
Gosh - I can't get over the sound design and music. I just got this feeling of intrigue and anxiety in my gut once the car door closed, and it just built up until they arrived at the house. Once inside, though, I encountered a completely different beast - just this itching, gnawing fear that I can easily compare to feeling like that sound. Having experienced childhood trauma and disjointed relationships with parents myself, I deeply empathize with the main character here. This is what facing trauma is like. How his friends try to comfort him afterwards and he just takes off, I know that - I've done that. I can't really express how closely this hits to home. The father crying at the end reminds me a lot of what it was like telling my parents that they had, inadvertently, neglected and hurt me as a child. I can tell they have a lot of remorse and regret, but they just don't know how to express it to me. Good lord this got personal, but man. I feel its necessary for me to share, if only for my own sake. Apologies for how ramble-y this is to anyone that takes the time to read
This movie meant so much to me as a teenager. I can't believe I re-found this film I thought I would never ever see it again! My father just passed away recently and I can really relate to this film. He was very scary. And now he's gone. And I'm still scared somehow. Isn't that crazy? That's the effect abusive family members can have on someone. I remember sharing this with my friends back when I was barely even in high school yet. My parents divorced in 2017 and it was a very ugly divorce, and me and my mom and younger brother all wanted out long before that.
The animation style and use of colour is so dark. But the music, sound and the initial ambiguity of the situation really gets to you. Intense. Love it. Need MOAR
When the father says, "This disgusts you, right? It frightens you, doesn't it?", is he referring to the mess in the house... or to meat? The deer hunt scene is unsettling because the wolf and the deer have such similarly shaped heads. Is hunting normal in this world? Could this be the reason the mother left him?
The meat looks like a liver or intestine? It's designed to look unappealing, slimey, even. I'm guessing it's more the savage angle of it. Like, the wolf went from what looked like a middle-class job with a suit and tie to leading his family to the woods for a "better life", one more animal. Hence his lack of clothes. Mom wolf doesn't really go for it given that she still wear dresses, albeit like sundresses. Our protagonist having just a cape symbolizes his innocence and being torb ebtween the ideals. Eventually, I guess mom got tired of it (though the bottle noise may indicate drinkign or something) and she grabs their son and leaves. When the son wakes up, he's not a stick figure, but fully fleshed out and wearing shorts, symbolizing he's chosen his path and back to civilization.
@@CountDVB Maybe that deer scene was the first time the son saw his father kill someone and told the mother, which must've terrified her since she wasn't really in on the whole being wild thing. Maybe the boy subconsciously forgot about it as he was not sure if he was in the right place at the beginning and only after meeting with his father again, did the memories flood back into him. At first he was sad that his father didn't seem happy but then he was terrified of seeing his own friends as prey like the deer and runs away just like his mother did.
Two individuals, father and son...the son abandons the father's world, for what he considers a "better way"...the father, wracked with grief for all he's lost, sees his loss in the son's face...the son, needing his father but not sure why, reaches out, but finds only the part of his father that he chose to abandon...the father, feeling anguish and sorrow (but is unable to express these to the son) attempts to reach out the only way he knows...the son, knowing nothing of his father, sees this attempt as hostility...both are left with an empty heart, and are missing the opportunity to learn from each other. Moral of the story: get to know your dad kids, he might seem gruff and unaproachable, but inside he's a person too, and has much to offer...if you'd just open up to each other!
This is absolutely beautiful in so many ways. It brings forth the emotion through the artwork, the music, the colours, the story and the very atmosphere itself. It really makes you think. I enjoyed every single moment of watching this. :)
Как же знакома такая жизнь. Как же знаком мне образ этого отца и отечества. Мне жаль эту семейную любовь, это тяжёлые чувства, где никто из не сможет убежать от них, да и навряд-ли получиться сделать это, и остаться самим собой.
This is an excellent example of how much you can say with little or no dialogue at all... sheesh... this was amazing, intense, yet, beautiful, great work!
Oof...man Idk if any of y'all had this happen but I started to get all choked up and ...started to tear up a little. The music and art style (It brings back memories of courage the cowardly dog lol my favorite homie in cartoon network 🕶️🤏). If this was a show, I'd watch it no 🧢 cap. You need to get this out there, I wanna see this as a show bc man...it has a way of making you feel.
I felt it with Wolfwalkers, I usually move through nature and this movie makes me cry for everything... I was pleasantly moved... I don't know how to describe it but it's a sob when I see Wolfwalker's art from Cartoon Saloon.
Боже мой! I love The Secret Of Kells and Song of the Sea. They beautiful! But now i see Old Fangs, I saw it a long time ago and now found it here, heh, this is just fate)
This is amazing, the the film tells by itself, awesome art stile, characters, background music, and I love how the film suspense makes you want to know more. :)
i remember stumbling upon this video when i was younger and it giving me nightmares, then never being able to find it again afterwards! didn't know it was produced by cartoon saloon
Amazing abstracted textures for the background/objects. I like the character designs and recon they should be featured on an animated episode of some kind (The story of the wolf growing up to a stronger person compared to his dad, and key themes such as: child abuse, conflict and peace *nug, nug*).
I have a download version where at 1:49 the screen stays black until 2:23 and in the audio there is what sounds like crying until the screen go back to normal
I really like it so much because I really think that it looked very interesting and very fascinating animation show video in the whole world as always 🌟.
Wow, this film is beautiful! The story was also intriguing! You know what the art style reminds me of? The 2017 video game night in the woods, do u think the night in the woods art style was at all influenced by this?
The young fox's mother fled with him when he was young. The house in the clearing is the home where the young fox grew up. The young fox is visiting his father who he hasn't seen since he and his mother fled. His father has a very traditional and rigid view on social roles. As a result, the father is angered and tries to shoehorn his son into a role which he can relate with. This ends in failure and the son leaves, feeling confused and dejected. The clip at the end depicts a father who is trapped within his narrow belief framework; unable to openly express his sadness at the result. In this film, the father is as much of a victim of society/his upbringing as the son.
Yeah, but I expect the fox's snout to be pointy, not the wolves as you can see and compare... but yeah other than that it makes much more sense that they're wolves.
A college-aged wolf revisits his father he hadn't seen as a kid. A photo indicates they were once a normal family untilt he father got them to move over to the strange house in the woods. My guess the father wolf tried to impose a more "natural" way to live, teaching his son how to hunt and forage while also getting deer. My guess is that it led to a rift between his parents
he takes up the whole house with his anger and brutality, and he's left a sad shell that his son can't relate to.
I love it! It was a beautiful visual metaphor
whoever made the musical scores for this needs to be hired ASAP cus this is some of the best soundscape i've ever heard ever.
have you ever played the nevermore game?
Atmospherically reminds me of Nurse With Wound.
So good!
I would watch a series like this. It's got great atmosphere. The body language and music tell the story.
exactly! the whole time I was thinking about how much it reminds me of "Over the garden wall"
the very ending scene is so powerful I cant even describe it
This music make me anxious, while the whole atmosphere seems very pleasant
7:57 smoke is covering the mum wolf. That's definitely a symbol
Yeah, your probably right. Later in this you see that the mom ran away with her son (the main character) while trying to escape the the abusive dad. The dad probably found them and killed the mom in a blind rage while the main character escaped.
@@StaleChips3 my idea was his mother left, his father won custody. Leaving his mother only a mere memory
What I think the overall story is that the father convinced his wife that they should move into a forest, so their son could grow more freely since he is the only one naked in the family portrait. Shes probably ded
This is so intense my heart is pounding, it's oddly terrifying
❤
Am i the only one who feels really bad for the two friends?
They must be so confused left alone in the woods at night.
Wait were the two friend supposed to be abandoned
It must be the father and the son.
R u serious? What is wrong with u? 🙄
Snowwwflake ?? Who?
NamelessMyers the person who made that comment
They did such an excellent job making an unnerving and troubled atmosphere with the visuals and especially with music and audio! Excellent work!

I love the backgrounds and the animation style.
I spent 10 years looking for this short movie, saw it on a tv channel when i was a kid. So beautiful

What is this forgotten gem that I just randomly found?
Cartoon Saloon just doesn’t stop to amaze me!
i just keep coming back to this video it holds a special place in my heart
I don’t recommend listening to this with earbuds. In the dark. At 2:00 a.m.
What about in the dark without earbuds at 1:30am? 😅
Magical Fox Nah. But that depends on how much you enjoy peaceful sleep I guess.
Oops.
I did it at about 1 a.m 😂 But I agree. It's scary 🤪
It's 2:00 am and i just saw it 😳

The style gives me night in the woods vibes.
The last bit of animation with the dad is so incredibly powerful!
I saw this a long time ago and now it reminds me of Night in the Woods
I thought the same thing!
Yes, and especially the eyes of the wolves! Other than that, I think both NITW and Other Fang have very unique, minimalistic art styles.
SAMEEEE
Oh man, the Night In The Woods prequel is looking awesome.
For real, though, that was some absolutely amazing atmospheric animation work.
When the father says, "This disgusts you, right? It frightens you, doesn't it?", is he referring to the mess in the house... or to meat?

The way he moves his arm as he says 'this' implies he was referring to the house.

Uhh the son was a boy when it happened. His mother took him away because she was concerned clearly.
Thanks, this makes more sense now!
@@CountDVB yeah. What I got from it is maby the father's a bit abusive from anger issues or something
Beautiful, amazingly well done art style and animation along with the cinematography and story.
This is a true gem, a diamond in the rough for me.
I remember seeing this was years and years ago when i was really young, I had no idea it was by the same company as a lot of my fav movies!
Their slim designs remind me of Courage the Cowardly Dog's Katz. It looks really good; I'll have to finish watching some other time.

I love how cartoon saloon has animations that touch on darker subjects , but always very colorfully appealing

A poignant journey!!!!!! I was totally immersed in the scenery and the central conflict. Suspenseful and raw.
Intense, expressive story .. soundtrack & pass a ten ...art that there to see and follow Cartoon Salon
Better than most major motion pictures released today! I love this, it's so beautiful! I love you people at Cartoon Saloon.
loved the animation style and I really enjoy this abstract story format... great work guys!!
I need to watch Song Of The Sea some day.

I have no words for this!!

Does the the dad remind anyone else of “theres a man in the woods”
How disturbingling cool.

What game is that
I absolutely love it

Ella Rue :3 I was thinking that too! They do have the same "atmosphere"
well considering this short film was released in 2009, maybe into the woods took inspiration from this.......
BREATHTAKING
So is this signifying a kid who was abused by his father and went back to make amends with him?

it is great, really great
