Redrally - Sigh....here comes the (coffee) snob. Or just a snob, who hates when people like what they don’t like. Starbucks basically created a market for “gourmet” coffee in the US. As this video literally explained, the original founders had to drive to Canada in order to find a good cup, and they were living in a modern city at the time. For many Americans, Starbucks was their first introduction to the gourmet coffee culture that existed in Europe. It’s not exactly the same, of course...but the idea of a non-alcoholic “third place” (away from work and home) to hang out and drink coffee was new.

The training kinda sucks now, a majority of the people I work with are just high schoolers who need their first job, and having a drive thru + an insane amount of customers means they care way more about how fast you are than how good you are. Over the last 2 decades, a key reason for how Starbucks got so huge was its decision to enter China. It opened its first store in China in 1999, and singlehandedly created a market for coffee in a country with thousands of years of history drinking tea. They were massively rewarded with handsome profits every year, and by the end of 2022 there were 6019 stores in China, accounting for 17% of its total stores. However Starbucks has been declining in China over the last few years due to factors such as China's zero covid policies as well as the rise of other coffee chains such as Luckin Coffee and Manner Coffee taking market share. Considering other headwinds it faces globally such as bad press from its anti-unionising efforts etc, the company's outlook is far from rosy. I made a UA-cam video about Starbucks' fall and Luckin's rise in China due to their contrasting business strategies and the different effects they experienced from the pandemic disruptions as a result of different business models, might be useful to you.

Coffee and it's 'waking' benefits have been advertised and heralded for practically all of Western Civilization since the Industrial revolution. I sell old Coffee memorabilia and my dad collected this stuff for almost 50 years. The interesting thing about Old Coffee items isn't just their professed 'waking ability' but their diverse nature in early mercantilism. Most every mom-and-pop grocery store had their very own brand coffee back in the day and there were other brands. Starbucks is another signal of the ultimate and unfortunate conglomeration of an industry that used to be more diverse and lively than it is now. I would love to see you do a video on early Industrial Revolution mercantilism that included so many.

There's also a little "rise, fall, and rise again" to the Starbucks story. According to one of my business classes, they almost went bankrupt during the rapid expansion, all because they didn't have good control over waste and materials ("ruined that drink, dump" and "whoops, too much coffee, poor out the excess" sorts of things). Then they were saved by better training and tools to make precise measurements.

I don't go to Starbucks, but I've always wondered about the fallout of their decision to publicly announce that loitering was allowed and that the restrooms were all public. I've heard complaints from some people about how that worked out, but it doesn't really seem to have impacted their popularity, which is surprising because you'd expect the consumers of a high-priced premium brand to want to maintain a sense of exclusivity around it.

The hidden factor here is that the margins for this kind of business are INSANE. They get people to pay $4-$7 for a quarter's worth of coffee et al, and that's a beautiful thing. That's how they were able to expand so fast. Any given location can turn a profit with very little in sales. Of course, if you have the RIGHT location, the money you make could choke a horse.

There's no place to logically hang out like the equivalent in Europe, where there are literally hundreds of places to go meet friends, chit chat, etc. Starbucks filled that need. It's also a great place to conduct business. I wrote an entire book while visiting Starbucks.
