Dippin' Dots - The Rise and Fall...And Rise Again
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 лип 2020
- Dippin' Dots has famously been marketed as "The Ice Cream of the Future". There was a time where I completely believed that statement but I can admit when I'm wrong. Dippin' Dots filed for bankruptcy in 2011 but have since made a respectable comeback. This video talks about the ups and downs of the business behind this unique product.

To me, the branding of "the ice cream of the future" just serves the fact that they're a charming novelty. Nothing is going to replace ice cream, but dippin' dots have a delightfully retro-futuristic vibe that their tagline just fits perfectly.
This!!
honestly dippin dots seems healtheir too, not sure if its true, the ice cream is just lighter
It’s impossible to be futuristic forever. At some point people will think of your design/product as old.
Right you are champ. I've had dippin dots once (they're super hard to find in Australia, I haven't found them since I had them 11 years ago) and it did seem like an exciting new food but then because it was so hard to find we kinda stopped caring.

"this machine that would automatically get them for you" has to be the strangest way anyone has ever referred to a vending machine. Does it walk to the counter and order them?
It opens up a liquid nitrogen freezer and uses an arm to get them. Definitely the most unique vending machine out there
When you feed the money into the hole, the machine sends a request to the Dippin Dots HQ A.I. to teleport a cup of pellets directly into the machine, then into your hands. It’s simple, really!

Because these ways work good, why does everything have to change? What puzzles me is why we still use expensive and toxic gas in cars when decades ago electric cars, solar cars cars that run on used vegetable oil and even super crazy cars that run on water or other free energy technologies but have been widely suppressed because the gas industry is extremely profitable and they don’t want people using other methods to power there vehicles. Fingering Things ✔️ To be honest with you, I honestly have never heard of this company before I clicked on this video xD

It's my favorite way to eat them (banana spilt dots with root beer yes please), but it was always hard to eat since it's hard to find a place to sit and eat there.
They should push into the cutesy factor. Icecream in a tiny round shape is cute and childish, that can still fit modern aesthetics. Not 1980s anymore where everyone is trying to be "futuristic" cuz that seems retro now.
That’s called retrofuturism. Like Back to the Future II - the past’s idea of what today (well, five years ago) would look like.
Actually if they do a nostalgia theme it might also work because people like things that remind them of the 80s but not exactly direct products from it
@@kuddlecat nostalgia can be good too I guess. But it still needs a "cute" feel. Their aesthetic always felt too cold for me, lol. It can be retro without feeling so sharp and lifeless.

@@tcbobb1613 I remember that!
bruh all this lead up to their rise again... and then “I don’t have any numbers, but I’m confident they’re growing”
The chain I think of as their spiritual successor is Sub-Zero. They take the storage/transport issues out of the equation by freezing your ice-cream to order with nitrogen. It's a perfect evolution of the "cup and cone" establishment because each customer gets their own custom ice-cream by mixing their flavorings or even choosing an almond milk base. Forget 31 flavors, you've gotta do factorials. I think most people buy pints and tubs at the grocery store, so this kinda of "personal pizza model" is more efficient for an ice cream shop.
I like the “ice cream of the future” slogan because it gives off the vibe of ice cream you’d eat in space. I take the slogan as more of a fun gimmick, like I do the ice cream itself
I think if they could find a way to sell their cryogenic freezers as home appliances for a relatively low cost, the type that looks good as a built-in appliance in the kitchen, I think they'd have a better reputation, and they would take a bigger chunk of the market. As of now, cryogenic freezers still either look like a 1990s copying machine or a jet engine turned on its nose, and no built-in or cheaper options are available.
It’s very reminiscent of the optimistic, “go science!” attitude of the atomic age, they should totally lean into it with a retro-future aesthetic.
Uh everyone knows you eat Astronaut Ice Cream duh
Shane Keena I like the idea of adding a cryogenic freezer to my kitchen but seems pretty niche maybe offering them to restaurants to sell the ice cream at a lower cost since a lot of the cost is transportation and storage selling to restaurants in bulk would lower the overhead and allow another avenue for sales and a way to potential lower cost which seems the biggest barrier to these
Yeah, agreed. It's def novelty thing. I always LOVED their vanilla flavor. Esp in those beads...the delivery of flavor was rich in every mouthful.

I remember my older sister had gymnastics meets all the time and there was ALWAYS a Dippin’ Dots stand at every single one. I’d always ask my parents for them, but they never let me have them, probably because they didn’t want to deal with me hopped up on sugar for a five hour meet.

Talk about having asshole parents.
they probably did't want to spend 5$ for less than half a cup of ice cream (keep in mind, most places have a 1$ ice cream cone) at least thats what my parents told me
@Morph Triplett generally, my parents didn’t really buy me a lot of sugary stuff or junk food as a child. At the time I hated it, but now I’m thankful for it. I didn’t need that stuff anyway.
Probably because they were bleeding $$$ from gymnastics classes and didn't want to bleed more from the cost of the Dippin' Dots.
God, I LOVED dippin dots as a kid. My mom even bought me one of those homemade dippin dots makers where you put juice in and let it freeze.
I loved Dippin Dots growing up because I would always get them at theme parks like Universal, Six Flags, and some local ones around me. I found as the years went on it was so hard to find them and I got sad because it is truly one of my favorite Summer treats. I found a local candy store that sells them by me and I just had them for the first time in such a long time and I the nostalgia it gave me is addicting. I hope they don't go away! I used to go to the Dippin Dots store in Florida (Outside Disney) and it was truly so magical. Please don't go away!
I remember loving them here in Australia. Wish they were still here!
Didn't expect to see you here :)
@@zeked96 Is she important? I've never heard of her.
@Minien They’re just some tech youtuber lol
Your name looks like someone just slammed their head on a keyboard and "Psivewri" is what got typed
They are. Look online.
One of my favorite Onion headlines is "Time Traveler: Everyone in the future eats Dippin' Dots."
Link?
dippin dots was something so luxurious that you couldn't buy it in stores... you had to have it at random touristy places like the zoo or shliterbahn lol. i love it tho. so yummy. i think the large cup was like 10 dollars.
I have Dippin Dots at only two locations in my city, the aquarium and a really expensive water park. I loved them growing up, I got them whenever I could. This video did honestly make me want more 😩
I remember first hearing about Dippin Dots when I was in elementary school. Then in Jr. High it was super popular, popular enough to open up a store a couple blocks from where I live. Then they closed a couple years later and threw shade at the landlord of the marketplace where their store was, leaving a note at the front door saying that they really badly wanted to stay open, but the landlords would not negotiate a deal with their rent. Crazy times man.
Gotta go stores and at least check them out while they’re open. Physical retail isn’t guaranteed to stick around anymore
@@tyujg7495. I time travel for most of my food. Pterodactyl wings are delicious and a single wing can feed the whole family.
When I was younger, I had to tag along with my little sister to her dance competitions. I vividly remember one of these competitions had a Dippin' Dots stand at the arena. That was the prominent reason why that competition was my favorite.
OMG!! you bring some back some memory about going with my mom to my sisters dance competitions, for a lot of years my my favorite thing was concession stand at competitions.
I love Dippin Dots but it's just too expensive.
I didn't expect an episode on dippin dots...
I was in 1st or 2nd grade, but for a month or two my father and I were addicted to 3 musketeers. Idk why I'm mentioning that right now, but your intro reminded me of that.
Their prices killed them, the fact that they’re almost entirely third party based makes for an insane charge
I only know Dippin’ Dots through theme parks. Never saw this at a mall, vending machine, etc.
One time I found dipping dots at a gas station, aren’t I lucky?
Once I found one at a trampoline park in a vending machine.
Same
We had them at our mall for awhile when I was younger, but they came in weird packets instead of the cups. Definitely wasn't the same because you not only got less, but the pieces also got stuck and melted together in the corners.
I've only seen them in malls and movie theaters.
So I am just now watching this video and I'm really excited that the mall in that photo is the mall in Springfield IL what it looked like in the mid early 2000
Dippin dots just feels special man. You go to a sporting event or the circus or the zoo and they have them and you’re like yessss I haven’t seen you in like 8 months gotta have it.
Locations killed them, the last place I saw one was the zoo, and honestly how often do you go to the zoo?
Idk I was probably in elementary
I go to the zoo like very one or two years when grandma has a day off work and it’s open but I never really saw dipping dots though except once
@@mooncharlie2184 Get Learnt.
I was there a few days ago
It doesn’t matter if you go to the zoo just once in a lifetime. The zoo is full of plenty of other people going there once in their lifetime, providing plenty of potential business.
"...and now they're in a better position than ever."
He says, in 2020...
Always want to try them, never have.
You should
I recommend cookies and cream
They’re good nothing else like it
they’re crazy good. but be careful they can get stuck to the back of your front teeth and make you want to die if you’re sensitive
Get them. Your tastebuds will be pleased
Eyeing these machines when putting your SkyZone socks on. The experience every little kid has had
This brings back memories
recently bought some at a buc-ee's and I never knew i missed the taste of it since I havent had some in a while and now I love it alot
Man buc-ees was wild as fuck.
-Malls became a big part of their strategy
Hey, I've seen this one before!
Wetzel's Pretzels?
I had Dippin' Dots way back when during a time my family could afford to go to amusement parks. I never knew about the bankruptcy and change in ownership. As for finding them now, good luck. I can't imagine business is booming for them during this pandemic.
Danodan My local gas station has a Dippin’ Dots chest freezer in it. The only other place I know that I can locally get them is from the vending machine at the movie theater but Coronavirus.
I saw people eating them at the mall so I can see how.
There was this place in my hometown that we called that The Falls. It was a water park/youth swimming center. The most expensive thing at the concession stand. Nowadays, whenever I hear Dippin’ Dots I just think of those good ol’ days at The Falls.
I haven't seen much of Dippin Dots aside from that I specifically remember seeing a stand for it at Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane when i was younger.
The story of Dippin' Dots is a wild story. There's a whole episode where the founder tells his story at the How I Built This With Guy Raz podcast, It's insane how a company that has been around for so long is actually still seeing startup-like volatility.
I've seen their vending machines at malls and sometimes think of trying it, and then remember that it's $5 for a little cup...
4:08 that was definitely a stand at Carowinds in Charlotte 😎
