I especially love stock plugins because I can go back to a session from 6 years ago, and they will still work without any problems. Besides them being very capable, this is a nice plus
Nope. Sorry to say you are incorrect about that. Presonus changed many of their plugins over time. Ampire had a big change from 3.5.xxx and 4.5.xxx. Most all of the Amps and speakers were changed or removed from the plugin. Really wreaking havoc for those of us who set up dozens of presets - only to lose them. Same applies for the "modeled" compressors and EQs in Fat Channel.
The more experience I get with how compression works, the better my stock compressor sounds. What a coincidence!
Totally agree. A friend of mine bought lots of high end gear and plugins. It didn't make better music. Some of my best sounding mixes were done using Reaper's stock plugins and a decent third party reverb. The rest is making the right tweeks and right decisions. I am pretty sure a world class mixer, if stuck using only stock plugins, would still manage to produce an awesome sounding mix. You read this and you know I'm right. There aren't any magic tricks.
Just listening to the demo song again in Studio One 6 this morning. Anyone with any doubts about what can be done with stock plugins should give it a listen. Amazing mix.
It’s how it’s recorded, not the S1 plug-ins. When you are a pro, you know this. Some of the best songs were just run through a console with very few effort at all. Do some research!

This logic makes perfect sense, and applies to many areas of production in video and audio. I love the statement of how just because something new comes out doesn’t mean what you have is garbage. If people understood that they would have better productions and spend less time chasing gear.

I'm using two different DAWs. I do a little bit of track crossover from one DAW to the other, such as making a beat or some weird synth part in Ableton Live Suite and exporting it to send to Logic. For me it helps to have a handful of paid mixing plug-ins (mostly from FabFilter) so that they work the same way in both DAWs. That said, the stock compressor in Logic is fantastic and I use it all the time.

i used to be in the camp of lets get as many plugins on the system as i can - yey!!!!! - but...... i didnt have a clue who to use them! , so they just sat there. then i met you Joe, took your courses and the light bulb still burns today! i have stripped it back, only using the stock plugins for mixing and learning how they work, then i introduced the fabfilter eq, de-esser and limiter - but this time i knew why i was using them - the eq can go more detailed than pro eq, so great. I have the fab filter delay installed but never use it as the stock plugin does what i need it to do, have i still got alot of plugins installed, sure, but they are now in a folder that never gets touched, when i upgrade the pc, will i reinstall them - i very much doubt it. Great video bud, great teachings.

Completely agree with you. There is no reason that you can't get a great sounding mix with stock plugins these days. At least if the tracks are well recorded to begin with.
Third party plugins will give you different colors to your palette though or make your workflow faster/better or simply inspire you.
Personally the UAD emulations has also been a good educational tool for me. I've learnt a lot from using them. I've learnt how to operate equipment I don't have access to, I've learnt how different types of compressors or EQs works and sound, and I've learnt a great deal of recording history.
But I've also found flavours of sound and workflows in there that I absolutely love and would not want to be without. That said, if stock plugins is all I have then that would not stop me from mixing.
I would not say that I get decision overload because I have a bunch of options. I usually have one or two go-tos for each specific case, so it's rarely an issue for me. I also usually type in the name of the plugin rather than pick it from the list (not that my list is insanely long).
For me it's more of an issue when there are too many option in one plugin. It can become overwhelming for me. That's one reason why I tent to shy away from the plugins that do everything, even though it's on theory a great thing.
I've subscribed to a couple of channels to learn about other plugins that are out there and I quickly realized that they were hoarders/collectors of plugins, but very rarely produced anything... other than videos showing the hundreds, maybe thousands of plugins they have.
agree 99%, with an asterisk. The stock stuff (in PT and Ableton, which are the DAWs I use) can do pretty much everything, *if you know what you want.* The "great" third-party plugins, if they really offer anything, generally either a) dial in faster or b) make experiment & discovery easier.
As an example of (a), Waves RVox compressor is essentially one knob: "more." Super simple and quick, to get a vocal (or wind instrument!) to sit where you want it. I can get the same result essentially with one or two stock PT compressor(s), one dialed in fast & light to grab the transients, one slow & deep to smooth things out. But RVox just gets you there in four seconds... most of the time.
Meanwhile, as an example of (b), plugins like Valhalla SuperMassive or Unfiltered Audio Triad let you flip through radically different sounds and *discover* things, even when you don't know what you're trying for. This can bring inspiration when you need *something* but don't know what.

Hi Joe, great video. I use a similar approach, but instead of stock plugins I only use Fabfilter for EQ, Compression, FX and nothing else. This has meant I’ve really learnt these plugins more deeply, and I don’t have decision fatigue. This has also meant I’ve stopped paying for a load of upgrades for plugins because there was a time when I just bought everything. I’ve also done the same with synths, guitar plugins etc.. Less is definitely more. The other advantages of using Fabfilter rather than stock plugins is I can take my knowledge of the plugins to another DAW when I need to

i love the stock plugins, aldo i like the quality more of the one of steinberg. but on the other hand i like some special plugins for what the can do more from studio one mix tool and pipeline, they are just amazing
100%!!! Funny thing is, everyone eventually comes to this conclusion. Usually after blowing lots of money on plugins and spending most of their mix picking what to use than actually mixing. I've been there for sure. There is a plugin called plugin doctor. Its free and it analyzes what plugins do. So harmonics,eq curves etc. A lot of fancy expensive plugins do little to nothing at all extra, that the stock ones don't do. Spend money on hardware like mics, preamps etc or musical instruments. They hold their value too and you will actually make more music. Thats the purpose of this after all.

Succinctly said, tough love. I get so amused/bored/frustrated with folks on the forums constantly asking for a plugin like "X" or a plugin that does "Y". I think in the future, I'll just point them at this video.

I agree that the actual recordings need to be done well and you don't need multiple plugins of the same type, BUT there is something to be said for limitations of stock plugins and 3rd party plugins that are more efficient. I love the stock EQ but I don't love the stock reverb. The stock reverb is very limited. Also the type of music will definitely change how effective/efficient some plugins are.
You’re right, after having upgrade issues and not being able to retrieve a mix because a plug in is not available it’s frustrating to say the least, Fab Filter is a great EQ, but so is presonus. I actually like the hard kick sound I get from the presonus limiter. Having had waves products and their upgrade issues and Slate upgrade issues, w think you are right. Slate and Waves are terrific, but you must maintain subscriptions or maintenance.
Unless you’re a professional mixer stick with Studio One.
Because actually is the ideal and utterly cost-effective thing to do. Ideally you don't want to end up spending more money in things that most of the time you don't even need them. Personally, I use most of them and I love them; they're big, user friendly and just sound great. Of course, I also use third party plugins as many out there, but one thing I love about S1 is the fact that you really don't need to.
I only use another plugin or something when I find that the stock thing doesn’t work the way I want, or do the thing I need. For example, I use the “dynamics” plugin in Adobe Audition to do my compressing for video audio when I export, and I feel like I get stellar results because I get to see exactly how the compressor curve affects my audio as I work.
I prefer plugins that either simplify everything done to a handful of parameters, or are explicit about everything they change. Using compressors as an example again, if I have “compression” and “level” knobs, I’m good with that. If I have “attack, hold, release, knee, ratio, threshold, level” I’m good. If I have some weird mix of the two, it bothers me, because I don’t like having some secret sauce, and having some not.
Either the whole thing is secret sauce, but I know what the sauce is affecting, or im making the sauce myself.
Music is an art, sound technology is a science, and the only time I believe in magic is when the the work we put in is touching someone’s heart.
great vid Joe,as for EQ's,besides static or dynamic they are pretty much all the same,there are however,special plugins like supermodal from polyverse music,a modal filter that makes your sound sounds like something other (glass,wood,metal,etc) cheers mate
In terms of sound most digital EQs are the same for sure. The user interfaces and features will differ though.
But when it comes to modelled EQs they can be very different. And I think more importantly the way they are designed will influence your mixing decisions greatly. That is something that is not often talked about.
In comparisons people will set plugins to the same settings and decide from that. And that's valid of course. But I've found that I tend to make decisions differently depending on which tool I use, and that makes a huge difference to the mix.
That's why I love the API 550 style EQs for example. They are broad stroke EQs that will force you to make bolder moves and not fiddle around.

Studio one had a plug in several versions ago that no longer is included.
I cant remember what it was called but one of the pre loaded options in the menu was called R2D2. That plug in was awesome on a drum track! It was no good for anything else. I miss that plug in.
This is probably the most helpful mixing video I have watched. I'm gonna stick with just Presonus peppered with some UA when I need it, and then focus on that source. 💪🏽
Love this concept, Joe. Keeping it simple. Saving time, saving money, less stress. Except removing mouth clicks from my vocals. Is it just me who feels like all clicks have to be gone? And I don't think there are stock plugins for that?
Hi Joe!!! This is Mars here. Thanks for taking your time asking me through an entery video. There's too much info and too much options in the market sold out as the best emulation or the closest to hardware that we tend to lose focus of making music and understanding the usage of tools. Perfections is the enemy of music and fewer options fewer distractions. I have 3rd party plugins but I always tend to grab the fat channel first and try to make it do the same as the 3rd party. If it make it? So I erase the 3rd party one and use the fat channel. But everytime I evolve in this profession I tend to erase bunch of useless marketing -hype stuff in my hardrive. Some people will defend the 3erd party sruff to death couse they paid for them. Keep it up Joe and please make more stuff using fat channel. Regards from Argentina. Mars
I love this because I know this is true because I have done construction all my life and I didn’t buy the more expensive tools I used what I could afford and hone my skills with those tool.
I know some that has all the experience tool and I do better work with my cheaper tools than them with there expensive tools
Your skills need to be honed
and mastered with what you have then you will see you may not need the more expensive tool
Now I don't feel so bad about my studio looking sort of disorganized, nothing matching, and not so modern looking, like Gregor's! Your studio looks a lot like mine and I love it, because you feel comfortable and it looks inviting. As far as Stock Plugins go, they are the ones that I trust, because I have problems with other Plugins, with a few exceptions like UVI or MeldaProduction, possibly Ozone.

Good points but in my opinion, when studio one 6 came out we got expensive plugins. The phat channel is a paradise of choice sounds to pick from. The pro eq 3 is amazing. The dynamic feature is so expensive. The different available mixers is great. I do have third party plugins. Kazrog waves Abby roads. My stock plugins I use for every mix foundation. The other are my Salt to taste.
If you want better sounding mixes GIRATS. The 5 step mixing. Top down mixing is in itself very fundamentals. The results of using the the five step mixing guide..PRICELESS.

Recently gone back to mix an album of songs after work took over for a year. Gone back to stock plug ins as the 3rd partybones were hammering my cpu and causing all sorts of issues with playback.
congrats on the 200k. well honestly i work in pro tools most often but im nobody so it doesnt matter. i own a s1 license did the upgrade to 6 and i do most of my composing ,and midi in s1 cus pro tools sucks for that . ont thing i can say with confidence is s1 has the best stock plugins by far. ive often thought if i would have just bought s1 first and had all the money back ive wasted on 3rd party plugins id be much less aggravated and could afford to go on a cruise right now lol.
Case in point. I recently revisited a mix with guitars I recorded 18 months ago. When I was very, very green. Remixed a great drum and bass sound but no matter what I did I could not get a decent guitar sound. Tried every EQ and plugin. Then realised the source was poor. Recorded them with better knowledge and recording technique and all I had to do was use a stock EQ to low cut, dip some mids out the way of the snare and lift at 2k. Nothing else and the mix is night and day better.
Studio One's stock plugins are not on par with the others available. It may be true for the other DAWs too. Going for plugins that provide lifetime updates is a good way to go about it. I would say MeldaProductions, UVI, Tokyo Dawn are good companies to consider for plugins.

I always considered the fat channel a stock plugin (or collection of stock plugins) since they are included in Studio One. Or is that only if you but it with a PreSonus mixer?

Joe, I'm a guitarist who has never in his life owned a Les Paul nor a Stratocaster. I've owned axes much like those iconic guitars, but never any of them. They are no longer on my bucket list. Why not? Because I've gotten into working on my own guitars and have improved several of them to the point where I no longer feel the need to get the icons as much. Sure, I still have the gear lust for them -- that's never going away unless I break down and buy them -- but the guitars I really need are the ones I have and have elevated. I REALLY OWN these axes, and would have to do much work on the icons to feel ownership to the same degree. Are the icons and other guitars I don't have better? Depending on the guitars, YES, they are, and I want them ... but I don't need them.

Some very good advice here. I'm guilty of having spent heaps of money on plugins that I haven't used yet. Not sure I agree with your comment on cheap petrol Joe, I would never put it in any car of mine.😊

People seem to forget that all music pre-mid 00s was mixed using a very limited set of hardware. In fact if it wasn't from a so called "Top40" - it was mixed using mostly just a basic EQ on a whatever mixer itself, a pair of effect units and maybe a master bus compressor (or maybe a drum bus compressor as well). And that was it. And it all sounded good. Most of that hardware wasn't even clean sounding.
Some stock plugs can be very good...and always check them out...but let's be honest here, most people who only use stock plugs usually can't/don't want to spend money on something better.
It's your music...use the best you can on it.
Is there a way to get that cool splitter plugin on studio one artist version..? I don't see it as a part of add on..

Hey Joe, I'm going crazy with this. I'm trying to use Mai Tai. It plays but it won't record. I think my settings or inputs are wrong but not sure what. Sure could use your help.
Processing load is a reason, too: with a big rock production (ca. 60 audio tracks) and only stock plugins I have a little more than 25% processing load in an old i7 computer. But, if I use, for example, an Abey Road reverb from Waves in one track, I have immediately 25% more load.
This is true, but man oh man, the Waves Abbey Roads Plates and Abbey Road Chambers are definitely a massive improvement over most other reverb plugins. I try to “not” reach for them if I can help it, because of CPU load, but man do they sound good!
FYI - the IK Multimedia “Fame Studio” and “Sunset Sounds” modules for T-Racks are both awesome, and are quite a bit more CPU friendly than Waves ABR Plates & ABR Chambers.

The most crucial point IMO is at around 9:55-10:10.

Studio One plugins are very pro.
Regardless of how many plugins you have, you generally only have a few go to ones that you use
I think is a great mindset. And you can even put that same mindset with third party plugins. Just use what makes you be faster and sound better with your workflow. The only downside of this mindset is that your sound in terms of mixing will always be “the same”. But that only apply to nerds mixing and mastering engineers 😂
At this moment I have only 5 type of eq plugins -Stock,API emu ..and Neve emu, Pultec and dynamic eq . Thats it
I make amazing mixes and masters with FL Studio stock plugins... You don't need anything else. Maybe you can get some extra help with them but they are just an extra.
I agree 100%, then after knowing this I spent days installing plugins. Many are instruments to be fair
analog emulations never gonna sound like real thing>you'll get more analog sound by using good clean digital plugins

Learn what the stock plugins actually do before you buy the "insert big name here" version. A lot of the time it's the exact same. Just a different GUI and an ad campaign.

I've found most stock plug-ins to be more CPU friendly and just as effective.
I always hiccup on the analogy about gasoline. The expensive gas isn't better or more volatile. It's just expensive.
