    I bought myself Studio One 6.5 for Christmas and I LOVE it. I was a Cakewalk Sonar user for many, many years and then they were dropped by Gibson and acquired by Bandlab. They gave away their DAW for years and now since they have refined the software, they are about to start selling it again as Sonar again. I got my Studio One 6.5 as a crossgrade from my Sonar Platinum purchase back in 2017, which was Cakewalk's last Sonar update). Pipeline XT, which allow the connection of my hardware was worth the purchase price alone.

    I love Studio One. Been a user for a couple years now. It's a beautiful looking DAW with great features, but my favorite part and why i will continue using it is due to their integration with their hardware. Im using their Studio 192 interface, faderport 16, and Atom. Everything works seamlessly. I love how i can control my interface inside of Studio One. If i need to change my preamp gain or phase of a channel, then i can from the mixer view instead of opening up a separate editor or reach for the physical unit. It's really cool.

    Fender's acquisition of PreSonus could be a disaster - especially if they continue to push the subscription model to the detriment of other licensing options. The Gibson horror story could be repeated.

      Subscriptions are the way of the future - Microsoft and other software companies are all doing this and personally I prefer it as it is a monthly amount you can budget for and get all the bells an whistles as long as there aren't radical monthly price changes
      1. Pro's
      Example Studio One you always have the latest version and update /new instruments - when I first bought Studio One in 2017 I have paid 4 times to upgrade until they introduced Studio 1 Plus - I also have Native intruments DAW and it annoys me when they have a new release I I really like the new instruments and effects and loops it hits my pocket a few hundred $ every year
      I was a Roland fan and multiple keyboard owner and from 1989 - 2015 (D50,D70,JD800,JV1000, XV5080 etc etc) an the Roland monthly subscribtion just for the DAW instruments of these and other sounds is almost double Presonus - so I cancelled that
      2. Con's
      If the monthly subscription gets higher - it is currently AUS$20 which is great unless Fender gets greedy - then nope I am cancelling Plus
      Hopefully Fender learns from Gibsons mistake with Cakewalk as I was a Cakewalk user until I discovered Studio one - but the rumours if they are true the failure of Cakewalk was due to an arrogant Gibson sales executive and he/she/etc was fired
      Any way that's my 2 pennies and a pound
      Studio one is awesome and have never looked back since I started using it in 2017

    5 months later, how do you like it? I joined their subscription service along with Reason's. I love Studio One for the Melodyne integration and the drag-and-drop anything anywhere and it will probably work setup. I use Reason because Studio One recognizes my MIDI controllers but doesn't want to let me use them, except my ATOM drum pad (someday I'll ask for some tech support and ditch Reason maybe -- I do love their digital instruments). All in all I hope it's working out well for you; I like the company and their spokespeople.

    So back in 2021, I attempted to use Studio One. Before that I was just using Garageband, which did the job for the small projects I was working on. I wanted to upgrade to Logic, but my MacBook got damaged in a flood and I bought a PC instead. For how little experience I had making music, the price tag on Studio One seemed a bit much and I didn't like how I had to buy the professional version to use 3rd party plugins which was weirdly important to me at the time. I ended up trying out Reaper and I've used it ever since. Although I still like using Reaper and I think its a really powerful DAW for the space it takes up on the computer, it doesn't come with a plethora of plugins (virtually no instrumental plugins) and I personally run into that buffer size problem all the time. Studio One fixes those problems for me. Definitely not willing to make a total switch because overall Reaper is a great DAW, but I'll try to learn the UI through a free trial and see if it's worth buying. Great video!

      Get the Studio+ subscription. Ik "argh subscriptions 🙄". It's 19.99 per month, comes with a lot of stuff and you are always on the newest version. 100 GB of cloud storage and their studio one+ exclusive livestreams are pretty neat, and the community feature is a great addition. It's hard to find a nicer community for music production in discord and stuff in my experience.

    We use Pro Tools but considering Logic. The #1 reason to use Logic is the unwillingness to leave MacOS. Especially if you're on an Apple silicon Mac, Logic is the most compatible DAW. Not having your DAW break because you upgrade your Mac is a big deal. Pro Tools on a Mac is a gamble - we can't upgrade from 2020 Macbook Pro without losing a bunch of plug-ins. We're still running Catalina. Is Studio One completely compatible with the latest MacOS?

    • @jonathanwingmusic
      @jonathanwingmusic 8 місяців тому +1

      FWIW I was forced to upgrade my Mac this summer - forced in that my trusty MacPro 2013 tower suddenly wouldn't turn on, and the cost to fix it far exceeded its value. Plus it was time. So I got the new MacStudio M2 (Silicon) running Ventura. I actually use both Logic and Pro Tools, and I have to say I was definitely nervous about this forced switchover with regards to plugin compatibility.
      Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised. I have probably too many plugins collected over the years (likely well into the thousands when you include bundles etc haha), and quickly discovered that by now *most* major plugin developers are fully compatible with Apple Silicon as of now. I didn't bother to install every plugin I used to own (in particular ones I don't use anymore), but out of the many hundreds I did install, only 3 did not pass the compatibility test when opening Logic - and honestly they are older ones I can live without. I'd say that's a pretty good success rate, I was expecting it to be worse. In order to open projects with Waves plugins (who I've been hoping to drop), I did have to pay for the Waves upgrade plan to V14 in order to get them to work at all, so that was annoying but now they work fine.
      Pro Tools was fine too. I'm running their latest version and I believe most plugins I own and frequently use work just fine. PT is still a little buggy as always, no huge surprise there.
      I have noticed that plugins from Plugin Alliance are a tad buggy (at least in Logic), sometimes crashing when I load them, and I've seen others complain about that. If you happen to use Battery by Native Instruments, sadly it is crazy buggy and basically doesn't work, so I hope NI will fix that soon. Otherwise most popular plugins are problem free on both DAWs. I can't speak to Studio One but I enjoy writing/composing in Logic in general, no major complaints there.
      The only other kind of big annoyance to bear in mind is that when opening older projects where I have newer plugins, they wouldn't recognize or translate. I found this commonly with Izotope and Fab Filter. For example if I opened a session where a track was using FF ProQ V2, and the version on my new machine is ProQ V3, sadly the session believes the plugin is missing and you can't simply 'translate' the settings over. You have to load the new plugin and start over. I learned this has nothing to do with the DAWs so it's something to keep in mind when you go to upgrade.
      Hope that helps!

    • @martyk656
      @martyk656 8 місяців тому +1

      @@jonathanwingmusic Hey Jonathan, thanks for the encouraging info. Most of our plug-ins are Universal Audio that "live inside" ;) the Apollo interface. Which should make things simpler, but more often adds an extra layer of potential trouble. When it's all cooking it's great, but it sometimes feels like a rickety house of cards. Multiple hoops to jump through when suddenly it all stops working. That's why we change as little as possible. Would be nice if it all just worked like it did back when - replacing gear required nothing but unplugging the old and plugging in the new.

    • @jonathanwingmusic
      @jonathanwingmusic 8 місяців тому

      @@martyk656 Sure thing! I also own an Apollo X8p and many UAD plugins - no issues there - I can report those are all working great (on both DAWs) and the interface driver is rock-solid too. Of all the "major" developers I'd say Plugin Alliance has been the only one that I find questionable. All in all the new system is working great and since I had everything backed up, the changeover wasn't that bad after all. Good luck for whenever you make the jump!

    Longtime S1 user here. As great as S1 is, the Impact kits are NOT the strength of their software. I make my own kits from the thousands of samples I've curated over the years. Impact itself is great and Patterns are an awesome way to build songs. Patterns were the thing that really sold me on S1 and once I started using it, I've never had a reason to look elsewhere. I build all my songs with patterns and then add either Addictive Drums or Superior Drummer when I'm closer to the end. I also recommend Neural DSP plugins for your guitar/bass tracks so they can be altered if need be after they get recorded. Welcome to S1. Enjoy!

      Back then, as a new user to any DAW, I did a LOT of research - knowing that it had to be important. I bought S1 because it seemed like the easiest and most pleasant looking GUI and drag n drop system out of all the options and yes, it seemed intuitive, which was very important as a newbie. I bet you'd have absolutely no problems with it as someone with experience. It was great back at V2, but now at V6.5, I'd never even need to consider another DAW.

    Hi Sean
    I watch your tutorials with great pleasure
    Music means the world for me
    I am 70 years young, play guitar for 10 years and ukulele for one year. I was always crazy about music but never thought of playing an instrument myself
    I have a remark and a question
    My remark: when ever there is a tutorial (not specific by you) about strumming it usually concerns patterns: UUDDUDUD etc.
    But I am also interested in the technique, especially how to strumm with my nails of 3 fingers simultaneously. This is kind of different especially the upstrokes because your nails can get caught in the strings
    The pro’s like you do this so easily
    It sounds great and it looks great. And you know that we men play an instrument to impress the chickies😅😅
    May be a good idea to spend a tutorial about this?
    All the best wishes

    I switched to S1 last year from 10 years of Logic and it's a much better workflow. Ironically, it has FAR fewer crashes on Mac than Logic did.
    The only major design flaw of S1 is that they separate instruments and tracks and channels. So you can have a track with no channel or a channel with nothing going to it... They're called Orphans. It was a very poor design decision, and Presonus keeps having to explain that it's a feature, not a bug! I hope they change that someday, because it's... well, it's just dumb and only causes problems. MIDI Track plays an Instrument which is heard through a Channel. All three need each other, so why make it so you can screw it up unintentionally when recording and mixing and editing dozens of tracks in a project?
    Aside from that, it's a joy to work with compared to Logic. One small but really important feature: you can move the mixer channels anywhere you want! That seems trivial, but when working with many tracks, it helps enormously. Sooooo nice to group channels together that belong together.

      @@johnlerro997 How can they be an experienced user if they don’t know basics functions? Every single producer I know, knows this button. There’s hundreds of tutorials stating it too. This is disingenuous.

    I don't understand why people like Logic. Even just the way it does sends is so crap in Logic. Studio One is very intuitive and is more "logical " than Logic.

    He calls Apple "evil" and claims they purposely "break" his devices with each new release. Dramatic, much? Meanwhile, he is using a Mac, Apple Watch, and iPhone. Classy... 🤦‍♂

    You probably forgot to tell this Video was sponsored by Presonus. Otherwise it's pretty hilarious that you claim Studio One was supposedly better than Logic, while you only showed the simplest of simplest things from Studio One, where it really is way worse than Logic. In all those features that you showed, Logic is light years ahead. Where Studio One shines is the console emulation and the splitter. But it's pretty much lacking in everything else. Imagine to pay every two years for an update, while you can heave a much better DAW like Logic for a once in a lifetime payment.

    my opinion:
    DON'T BUY PRESONUS. I bought their 32Sand it blew out my $3000 Dell computer... that cost me $800 to fix, and the fault was definitely with the Presonus. Their service dep't was not particularly helpful. While these mixers appear to be very nice on the outside, their completely unbacked with any common-sense instruction. Not even a printed manual came with it. And the return process lost me $1k in studio client work, and the hassle of returning the unit was considerable. NERE AGAIN. Take my advice and BUY ALLEN & HEATH.

      Nice advertisement on a video about another brand. Allen and Heath will reward your good deeds with a biscuit.

    I have both/ Nice layback attitude from Sean, but 1. He knows shit about Logic Pro. Two: There are way better and cooler features on Studio One he could have use to make S1 look better.
    On this occasion this is a very poor video
