1. Solenoids cleaned problem still existed. 2. Vanos seals overhauled, problem still existed. 3. Engine flush & oil change, problem went away and returned 3 weeks later. 4. Root cause input cam retard solenoid intermittently sticking (bottom right on vanos). (Remove filters, connect positive and negative wires to marked positive and negative wires on electrical casing of solenoid wiring connector, dont connect wrong way round or short! Pulse solenoid by applying power and spray carb cleaner through hole on side at same time, also block one hole to ensure it gets around plunger while doing this - these do get warm)

Do you have any pictures of this? I’m having a similar problem with a warm misfire. 328i m52 but still pretty similar issue.
