Harvesting duplicates for material? Brilliant and OH SO AMERICAN. Use everything you have. Suddenly all that 'dead iron' comes to life and is reborn as new tools! That's damn magic. Thanks Keith, good video! I'm always amazed to watch something like that! The battle of hardness in real time is really mezmerizing. I worked in materials science in my youth and fully understand the mechanical madness going on at that cutting edge!!

Boy are you right about never having the right size cutters! I have a large selection, from 5" diameter roughing cutters to tiny watchmaker's wheel cutters, but I never have the size I need! (I don't cut that many gears, and have designed projects around the cutters I DO have, but still...) Finally bought a set of chinese 16P cutters for the last project. They worked fine.

Human psychology sometimes has us count the misses and ignore the hits.
You can run 50 jobs with the correct involute cutters, but we only remember the times when we don't have the right one.
Not a problem for every day conversation. We all feel your frustration, and we get it.
But that's why we use real science and statistics when measuring important things.
    It eliminates our natural biases.
Just my ramblings for today. Keep up the good work, Keith !!

Don't need a form cutter if you have a surface grinder. Rough cut on the mill with slitting saw then finish with a form wheel?
Never should have ruined old GOLD when a $15 hobbed coupler is available. Section it into gear thickness blanks chamfer both corners for a welding vee then machine a donut to fit. Finish weld, sides and diameter on a lathe. Machine or grind the gear teeth as needed until the cast bracket arrives.
