The Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing is an American biplane with an atypical negative wing stagger (the lower wing is farther forward than the upper wing). It first flew in 1932. In 1932, Walter H. Beech, formerly head of the aircraft manufacturer Travel Air, left Curtiss-Wright, which had purchased Travel Air in 1929, to set up a new company, Beech Aircraft Corporation, based in Wichita, Kansas. Beech took the airplane designer Ted A. Wells from Curtiss-Wright, and the first project of the new company was the Model 17, a fast biplane with an enclosed cabin designed to meet the needs of business executives. It was based on a design drafted by Wells while at Curtiss-Wright, but rejected by the Curtiss-Wright board. The Beechcraft Model 17, popularly known as the "Staggerwing", was first flown on November 4, 1932. During its heyday, it was used as an executive aircraft, much as the private jet is now, and its primary competition were the Waco Custom Cabin and Waco Standard Cabin series of biplanes.
The Model 17's unusual negative stagger wing configuration (the upper wing staggered behind the lower) and unique shape maximized pilot visibility and was intended to reduce interference drag between the wings (although it was later found to have negligible effect). The fabric-covered fuselage was faired with wood formers and stringers over a welded, steel tube frame. Construction was complex and took many man-hours to complete. The Staggerwing's retractable conventional landing gear, uncommon at that time, combined with careful streamlining, light weight, and a powerful radial engine, helped it perform well.

This is the most beautiful biplane machine ever built by man. 👌🏻👍🏻
Great video, impressive 😎
Historic airplane, looks fantastic. I also was impressed by your camera work. That's just awesome. My respect and sub for this perfect video
What a beauty...Silly me, I always thought these had fixed undercarriage; IDK what I was thinking. When I saw the gear come up, I had to look back in the video. I get the blocked view on ground cause of the large cowling , never noticed b/4... Interior was really great. Nice 68 y/o. Thanks.
magnifique avion et superbe vidéo, le bonheur!!! merci.
Great plane and wonderful video. Nice camera work in the beginning! -Mike
Great videography! Thanks for sharing!!
Nice
Easily one of the best looking biplanes ever made. IMHO.
Naw, it IS the best looking biplane.
They are very cool.
It's like a squeaky clean time travel.
So clean it looks like MSFS.
One of the best look planes ever! Despite its terrible looking cockpit!
Cet appareil est magnifique
fun fact about the staggerwing, is that Al Capone had one as a private plane
👍
I think you got the date wrong, Try 1944 or 45 not 1956!. I worked on a friend 1944 D17S for years. Loved playing with her and best flying plane I have ever been in.
This one is actually a 1943
Thanks for sorting that out 🙏
Интересный персонаж,
Does the tail wheel lock or free catering? or like a Scott tail wheel?
Free castering with a locking pin, which is actuated by a lever under the instrument panel
