I love this song. It’s stuck with me somehow. There’s something very odd and slightly “off” in the key it’s in, which jars my brain, but scratches a really good itch. I’m not a musically talented person and can’t describe it any better than this!
EyeC999 The song is in F and the chord progression is F G# C7 F A#m C7 F A#. The chords G# and A#m aren't in F, which leads to some parts sounding strange.
The melody switches from major to minor with the chords, which goes out of a standard F major progression.. (basically adds minor 3rds and 6ths while keeping the Major chord sound)
Eesh can we pretend F is a flat key and call them Ab and Bbmin instead of G# and A# min :[ i know enharmonically it's the same but if you're describing the changes it's way more natural to think of Ab as a flat 3 and Bbmin as a minor 4
The music video is trippy, it's basically Groundhogs Day + Lego Movie if it were a horror movie... I think the lyrics are amazing, it sparks madness at least that's what I insinuate.
i miss j. tillman... this represents, to me, the reality of our society... i dont want to call him a sell out, but the feeling is there. I don't know who this man is and his music is weird now.
Well good thing for you he released a good few solo albums under the style you prefer before he took on the Father John Misty moniker. (Personally I LOVE his first four albums, Fear Fun was a revelation at the time it came out, not a fan of the newest one that’s much more J Tillman than FJM, so maybe you should check out his newest stuff. This is from a 2018 album).
Tom Dijs probably not, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were to open for him. It’s the band Amason with members from different projects (like Gustav Ejstes from Dungen)
I like amason/dungen/old jtills, old fjm.. but most of post-fear fun has just kind of petered out boringly. I just dont understand what happend, but I wish whatever left would return :\
I'm not a fan of his more navel gazing works (cf. Leaving L.A.), still he's written a fuckload of excellent tunes. You might not be a fan of any of them, so it's hard to be objective.
I agree with that one, some boring generic...stuff. Not even bad, just dull, dull, dull. Everything he makes sounds like some phase that teenage girls go through as they try to make sense of the world.
Hans... are you saying the phases that intelligent teenagers go through to make sense of the world doesn't make up the majority of good pop songs? What exactly is your criticism of FJM / Tillman? I'd be interested in hearing any criticism that doesn't make this same tired complaint which adds up to nothing really. Dull? Generic? Boring? These are merely random adjectives without context.
Your first question has nothing to do with my post but yeah, I would say that teens do not make most good "pop songs". Not sure why this matters. As for the rest I am not sure what you are trying to say. My objection to virtually everything Misty does is that is is very generic sounding which according to you is not a valid complaint..... Every generation has a handful of guys/girls with a guitar performing songs about heartfelt topics in a low key fashion..and they all sound the same, for the last 70 years or something. They all have some counter culture claims that seems to be crafted by a PR department, Boring, dull and generic sums it up pretty well.. I would make an exception for Ballad of the Dying Man which is the only Misty song that stands apart from the others.
I fell asleep.. bc he thinks he's better musically than Michael Jackson.. omg!.. is that a song? Sounds like my cat playing keyboards.. way more talented btw..
The placement and delivery of the line "Mr. Tillman, for the *seventh* time" will always make me giggle
It’s always seventh?
1:39
Does anyone else feel goosebumps when the background vocals harmonize while he sings: “I’m living on a cloud...”?
The video to this is even better. A crazy time loop nightmare..

EyeC999 Dissonance my guy. Dissonance gives it that David Lynch vibe.
Thot Police “Dissonance”...what a great word. That’s it, exactly.

I love how he sounds exactly the same live unlike a lot of artists
Agreed. Real singers do not need synthetic vocoder filters .
he is better live
@@silverkitty2503 ditto!
Underrated artist
such a good vocal melody/flow
LP4 is gna be about the comedy of depression and i’m so pumped
you sir, blew my mind a little... comedy of love, the world and nowwww depression
Just like LP 1,2 and 3?
Josh said the album is non-conceptual so I don’t think this is the case
check out his performance of pure comedy songs on KEXP that's where he makes this claim
it can still have themes that occur within it
I've just very recently become aware of Joshua and I'm mighty impressed. Forward, ever!
The music video is trippy, it's basically Groundhogs Day + Lego Movie if it were a horror movie... I think the lyrics are amazing, it sparks madness at least that's what I insinuate.
SMASHING!
Top tune: Melodic, tongue-in-cheek lyrics & very "catchy" whistle closure...and skilled musicians. Double thumbs up from me :-)
👍 👍
FATHER JOHN! Why haven't I seen this until now? Such a legend.
I LOVE THIS SONG & Loving Father John!!!
Way too few comments about how wild and awesome it is to see Amason as the backing band here.
this guy is very talented
Beautiful performance, and excellent directing. This video looks
Love this dude.
I am stuck on father john misty right now. Cannot get enough.
currently this sounds even better live
God his beard is taking over his face.
Paul Looney yea man..can't f@ken fathom how fast it grew either
New album can't come soon enough
love His style ;P :);)
it perfect
Ol' Misty Tillman, Josh Unique, Mist McMert, Mist Dog, Big Baby Misty....
Love how the description says "Father John Misty, Mr. Tillman, Joshua Tillman", all aliases of the same man. Would be pretentious if it wasn't so good
Right haha. I imagine viewers being unable to make anything out of it all
That pretty much sums him up for me. Pretentious but I can't deny he's good so he just about gets away with it.
Kevtb87 It works because it’s completely self-aware, he knows he comes across as pretentious and uses it in such a clever and ironic way
Forgive me father, for I have sinned
This guy should get some brass and start doing those jaunty Kinks show tunes
You left your passport in the mini fridge...
Love it
Så jäkla bra!

Does anybody know where I can get those sunglasses? Or something similar, PLEASE, I'M DESPERATE.
Edgar Zúñiga I was just about to ask the same thing!
me too
Perfect
The band seems so much more mellow when they play in Nordic countries.
The native population in nordic countries are a bit more mellow, for better and worse.
who's the girl on the back vocals?
It’s Amanda Bergman aka Idiot Wind
new backing band?
Tom Dijs probably not, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were to open for him. It’s the band Amason with members from different projects (like Gustav Ejstes from Dungen)
It's definitely worth checking amason out! They are an amazing Swedish band
Is that Ms. Idiot Wind herself at the background vocals?
Yes
Anyone know where that shirt is from?
His band has almost completely changed?
This looks like a one-off band for this performance
I hope so
Clumsy Sandbocks it’s Amason, with Gustav Ejstes from Dungen etc.
Oh cool. I haven't heard of them, but I'll check them out.
Uh, his songs are as simple as it gets, any musician can step in.
Where's Dan?
!
!
!
Is this song talking about that time I was drunk at a hotel
yo
Best way I’ve described FJM to someone who’s never listened to him is if Bo Burnham made more serious music
I actually prefer how he sings Heart Shaped Box to Kurt
Jesus Christ
:)
I like amason/dungen/old jtills, old fjm..
but most of post-fear fun has just kind of petered out boringly.
I just dont understand what happend, but I wish whatever left would return :\
Seems like he stopped enjoying it but kept getting more popular so he decided to run with it and now he's kind of post post irony or something.
Starbucks brought me here
Hope Starbucks bring you back
SAMEE it was playing during my shift tonight
I think this is a pick up band?
This video is sooo fuckin weird
Zzzzzz, some verse over and over... Goes with the current theme of Isocracy though.
so are we done pretending this guy writes good music
Travis Carroll what?
I'm not a fan of his more navel gazing works (cf. Leaving L.A.), still he's written a fuckload of excellent tunes. You might not be a fan of any of them, so it's hard to be objective.

My cats meaw has more significance than ALL of those words together.. he says nothing.. nothing.. pure shit. Not comedy. ;)
u mad?
Mark Schiewe of course
v s Please send cat meows for comparison.
This is how he pays the bills? It's bad.
Lawrence C Look up “Angry River” by The Hat and Father Misty. Amazing song.
It's okay to admit you have bad taste
He just won a Grammy...
Lawrence C let's see you write lyrics half as poignant, chump
+Lawrence C
Yeah ....he _is_ a "bad ass" ;)
omg.. Awful....
Eivind Krey Hanssen the lyrics are brilliant
Eivind Krey Hanssen Not as awful as that haircut of yours.
It’s not Norwegian Death metal, no :s
If you think it's awful, at least tell the reasons why. Otherwise your opinion is literally worth less than shit.
