  • St. Louis, Missouri has so much to offer and so many areas.... But here are some things you should know before moving to St. Louis because it's got its good sides and ugly ones when living here. Some of these might be a good thing for you, might be a bad thing, but just stuff you want to think about before living in STL.
    St. Louis is a really big town. It's also got some weird taxes despite the great affordability and cost of living. It's a pretty mixed bag in terms of the areas you can choose to live, and a lot of people are originally from St. Louis. Finally, there are lots of segmented pockets of St. Louis and all these cliquey groups you might find if you live here. All in all, it's got some great stuff but these are 5 things to think about to get a sense of what the area is like if you're looking at relocating to greater St. Louis.

    As a child of St. Louis, this video has a great diplomatic overview of the culture here, but of course ymmv. The cliquishness and high school question are just a local flavor version of human nature's way people relate to each other. Do not fear or try to fully understand it, just be aware, and avoid burning bridges crossed and uncrossed. I suggest if you are coming in as an "outsider", leave all your pretensions and perspectives behind, don't define people lest they define you, be respectful and diplomatic and openly seek and embrace what is good here. Save your lectures whatever they may be, and you'll find most decent people pleasant and amicable, at least on the surface, until you find the social connections you desire. 🙂

      That's a very good point. Stl isn't perfect, and any city is going to have its weird quirks and things that people say and do! I completely agree about avoid burning bridges. I've had so many encounters with people I didn't think I'd see again, or come to find out we have friends or colleagues in common and I ended up very glad things didn't end on a bad note..

    My wife and i moved here from Montana. We got tired of not having more to do and not to mention Montana is getting expensive. I come from a small town and if you wanted any decent prices for shopping you had to drive an hour for a Walmart or 2 hours for Home Depot or Lowes etc. Its nice to have choices around here

    Great video as usual! STL definitely has a different feel from Chicago in terms of urban density. Both cities are cool IMO. I think the STL area may have more beautiful scenery, hiking, golf, etc and is definitely more affordable. CHI may have more theaters, clubs, etc. And the lake beaches and waterfront are cool.
    Personally, I've been falling in love with the STL architecture and history the last couple of years. May have to move to STL and take the train to CHI town on occasion to visit..lol. Thanks again for the videos and all the best to you!

    Very informative video. I’ve been looking at the downtown condos in the old brick buildings that often sell for under $130k. I’d prefer a house but I think it would be cool to be a low to walk to Cardinals games or downtown sites. What is it like living in those condos? HOA seems mostly affordable.

    • @LivingStLouis
      @LivingStLouis  5 місяців тому +2

      Downtown lofts will definitely provide that mid-rise city feel if that’s what you’re looking for. Look closely at the HOA for each building b/c they range in price a lot and some buildings come with more amenities than others -- e.g in-building gym, secure parking, rooftop pool patio & lounge, depending on if you have a strong preference for those aspects of condo living.

    I moved to St Louis from Los Angeles and I've never had someone ask me where I went to high school. Overall, I'd say the move was a good experience. It's a lot more affordable than anywhere in Southern California but difficult to make friends as an adult when you know no one in the area. That might be the driving force to eventually leave but I've only been here for 5 months so anything can happen.

    As an “outsider” meaning NOT from Missouri - you did a really good job describing how rude and frankly immature grown adults act and judge you or try to “categorize” a person based on where one went to high school. It’s truly unbelievable that people still do this in this day and age. 🤯 guess it’s all those people that peaked in high school and just can’t move on?? If they ever do leave and find out it’s not like that elsewhere in this big world, maybe that’s why they feel the need to have to return to their comfort zone or small bubble.

    • @KellyTheZeta

    Is personal tax, like on a truck, what we would call a vehicle registration? Which I’ve lived in Ohio and Texas and that’s what we pay yearly. Also, living in Columbus Ohio and working in Reynoldsburg I’m used to paying 2 different taxes

    • @LivingStLouis
      @LivingStLouis  7 місяців тому

      I don't know if it's just called something different in Ohio and Texas but the personal property tax is a pretty big tax compared to title & registration fees in Missouri. There's sales tax when you register the car, and then personal property tax gets charged every year you own the car on Jan 1. For a $50k car personal property tax is likely gonna be somewhere between $1100 to $1400 depending on where in MO you live.

    I love in the Arnold area. I like it here. Higher taxes but bigger police presence so if you need police they're there pretty quick. Same for paramedics etc. They're pretty quick. I personally like knowing the police are "present". STL is known for crime but Arnold is known more for not putting up with it. Very nice family place to live. You'll find this out when you realize there's not many places to buy. If a place does come up for sale, it's gone quickly. But if you can move here I recommend it.
    Personally I don't go into the city. Too much crime.
    The whole high school thing is very real. When I moved here I thought is was just them being nice but yeah, they're totally sizing you up. I thought that was odd. But every area has their "thing". People thought I was odd when I moved here because I lived right near Arkansas so had the whole southern accent. So much so that I had to work on my language skills lol. Down there people knew what I was saying. Up here... No idea. We had an accent, slang terms etc. And people weren't necessarily nice or understanding either. But I'm still glad I moved here. I wouldn't change a thing. We have a lot more opportunities and best thing is our children do too. The town we came from was dying and still is. Best move we ever made.

    Jacob, since you said you're not all that familiar with Southern Illinois, I'll share something with you about Illinois. Housing may be cheaper but the price of gas is way more expensive than in St. Louis. My dad was from Belleville, IL and moved to St. Louis as a working adult and he said even back in the 1950s, the gas prices were always more expensive across the river. Guess they have a higher gas tax. I too have lived in other states and I agree about the traffic. St. Louis traffic is manageable.

    I am not from St. Louis and I am not American either. I lived in Maryland for 9 years and have been here for 1.5 now. I must say you were of great help in my research in 2023 when I moved here. Thank you for that. I live and work in central west end so it is pretty much the center of the city, but I have pretty much sampled the whole city.
    Saint Louis is a mixed bag just as a bag of apples has mix of bad apples and fresh ones. It is imperative to be decisive otherwise the entire bag is a no go before one realizes. I hope the rot in the cities of this great nation of yours is fixed with the required decisiveness. I am incredibly grateful to you Americans for the incredible hospitality and unparalleled opportunity. I wish nothing but the best for Saint Louis.

I live farther west compared to all my friends similar in age to me who are closer to the city, so I feel a bit removed from the social scene. That being said it's a very easy commute so there's always events going on that I love going to.
