I knew Ali, most intelligent man I've ever met in my life. Treated me like gold. Always made others feel like a winner. Before they took his license away, there was nobody in his League. And I mean absolutely no one. I was sparring with him in the early 80s, and I was getting in on him. He read me. Getting proud of myself. He shuffled his feet, and through a multiple punch combination. Just aiming to graze me. The wind was whistling by my ears, I could not believe it. He let me know who the boss was.😂 He rubbed the top of my head. And we both laughed. There will never be another Muhammad Ali, miss you champ.

After hearing an interview that revealed this was the fight that inspired Sylvester Stallone to write the screenplay for Rocky, I searched and found this video. It’s amazing to watch this fight for the first time, knowing its connection to the Rocky bout with Apollo and actually seeing similar exchanges in this fight to the ones in the iconic movie. To all those critics of Chuck for the rabbit punches, I found it completely expected for a club fighter who’s used to brawling for meals to have a street-tough style that skirted the rules a bit in comparison to the polished professionals Ali was accustomed to. Sly nailed the personality of this fight in his movie.

I have no doubt that Wepner would not be someone you'd want angry at you in a bar. He'd wipe up the floor with any patron I'm sure...but he didn't have the talent to take on the best the Heavyweight division had to offer. To his credit, he fought them all. He fought Liston, Foreman and Ali, and many others. Man, the guy had guts. You gotta be a tough SOB to fight all the late 60's and 70's bruisers Chuck did, and live to tell about it. Last I saw, he could still carry on a conversation and put real sentences together. Given how many punches he's endured during his career, that's amazing. I could also go on and on about Ali's greatness, but we all already know that.
I agree completely! Ali is a great fighter, and, as Apollo Creed said in the Rocky movie, Wepner fought great. He really held strong against Ali. I met him in Bayonne after the fight at a food stand. I didn't know he fought Liston and Foreman. He was a bouncer in Bayonne and a liquor salesman. They both did great and made this a real battle to the end. I wasn't sure if Ali played a little with him, knowing he could take him after a few rounds went by to make a good show. But, Wepner went the distance, which surprised many, and I am sure, Ali too.
Great quality picture. Great audio. What a horrific job done by the referee, tolerating the blatant rabbit punches, scoring the pushdown as a knockdown. This fight is what happens when a club fighter with an amazing chin faces a polished tru professional boxer. Notice how Ali rushed after Wepner and hit him one last time? Ali declined to do that to Foreman and some other real pro boxers worthy of respect. Wepner was so far beneath Ali both in skill and in tactics for this fight, Ali afforded him no such courtesy.

Wepner lasted twice as long as Foreman against Ali. Ali had to make sure Wepner couldn't cone back, because Wepner had real power. Even on the knockout, Wepner wouldn't fall to the floor. Foreman went down like a sack of potatoes. It was Fireman who cheapshotted Joe Frazier multiple times when Joe was clearly on his butt on the canvas. Ali didn't cheap shot Wepner, and Wepner gave Ali a much better fight than Foreman did. Lots of heart from Wepner. I think Ali did respect Wepner's power, stamina and ability to take punch.
Interesting Wepner can pound at will on back of Ali's head and that's ok with Referee. But Ali does it to Wepner and immediately Referee is all over Ali about it. Poo pretty obvious bias by Referee. I'm glad Ali finished him off at the end. 🙂
Ali really is the greatest, he saw Chuck couldn't really hurt him and decided to give him the worst night of his life. Ali waited, Chuck punched and punched and punched and Ali started dancing again like nothing happened. Meanwhile, Chuck is dragging himself across the ring like an old sleeping bag.
Saludos
Nice video ! A harder than expected victory for Muhammad Ali. Fight spoiled somewhat , by Wepners continual 'rabbit ' punching, behind the head. A brave effort by Chuck Wepner.
Cheers thank you, Wepner should have been penalised for repeat rabbit punching, it was pretty blatant & the referee should have deducted a point at least.
@david j.smith....A BRAVE EFFORT?????? U DO REALIZE ALI WAS PAID EXTRA TO TAKE THIS FIGHT INTO THE LATER ROUNDS RITE? WEPNER DID NOTHING BUT MAUL & RABBIT PUNCH, I THINK HE THREW OVER 170 RABBIT PUNCHES, THAT'S NO DAMN EFFORT.
Harder in the sense that the ref was lousy, and a trip was counted as a knockdown. Ali knew Wepner could take a beating. He played it smart and didn’t expend too much in the earlier rounds. The hardest thing for him was pushing Wepner off when he would lean in.
Ali as ive known as cassius clay in my teener had done its best to victory and have obseved fair and truthfull equal to the loser and winner and gracefully surrenered his youth. He has now rest in peace he was best admired in dancing like butterfly and stinging like bee and his rope-adope
Though photo evidence later revealed Wepner's foot on Ali' foot caused the knockdown, it was not reversed & stood as knockdown. That was the 4th of Ali's career. Preceding Wepner were Sonny Banks, Henry Cooper 1, & Joe Frazier 1.
Ali's rotatory motions are both clockwise and anti clockwise. No doubt that have a noticeable negative impact regarding his courageous competitor. The least impact is that it diffuses his competitor's focus, if not totally distracting his concentration.

Wepner said he did the rabbit punches to piss Ali off, and maybe he'd then lose control of his technique, giving Wepner a chance. That was a definite miscalculation. As far as pissing Ali off, mission accomplished; but Ali was too smart to get out of control angry. Wepner just made Ali want to kick his ass even more.
Ali is dancing, and keeps the "control" of boxing moves ,all along. Ali keeps his head not to be hit----- so all along WEPNER follows what/where ALI does! Ali does not let him hit his HEAD/FACE be hit. Wepner ends up hitting ALI below head /face,--- Body Shots. With repeated body shots ,Wepner is getting himself tired and fatigued.
I do remember watching this debacle on Wide World of Sports. Yes this IS the fight that Stallone based "Rocky" on. They nicknamed Chuck Wepner -- "the Bayone Bleeder".....please excuse the spelling of Beyone( not sure if its correct).
Ali gave him a beat down he should've punished more but Ali is a great fighter and gentleman even in the ring he gave out what they have they got back...
The fight dat may have given Ali Parkenson. Chuck may have hit Ali behind the head over 100x in this fight, and Ali complained to ref about 20x, when Ali did it ref warned Ali. Chuck inspired Sylvester Stallone to make Rocky. Unbelievable
Incredible he Hits Ali in the back of his head at least a hundred times and the referi sais nothing, but when Ali hits him once the referi scoulds Ali.
In this fight VEPNER TRIES TO WAST TIME BY holding Ali’s hands trapping him- this is a violation of the game plus Vepner took on punching Ali’s body close to the Rob , he exhausted himself!
Whoever called Wepener a boxer, owes the sport of boxing an apology. He was just a guy that could look after himself well in the streets. I hope I'm not provoking his family by my observation.
I'm inspired to begin screenwriting a blockbuster boxing film, all about a gritty antihero who rabbit-punches his way to ignominy. I think I'll call it "Chucky."
This version of Ali in '75 still had Swift hands, I wonder how this Ali would have done against prime Holmes, I think he just might would have beaten him on points as long as he doesn't play around and keep punching and land tons of punches like he did in this fight
How do you think Holmes would have fared with Liston, Frazier & Foreman? Holmes was a very good fighter but never fought the calibre of opponent that Ali did & i'm not sure whether he would have defeated those guys, let alone Ali at his peak, they would have made for competitive fights no doubt & i reckon Holmes may have beaten at least one of them.
@@BoxingFightsByGaryWilson Holmes at his best had those fast hands and good foot movement like Ali did so I think there's a good chance he might have beaten all three, but yeah IMO Ali at his best could beat any heavyweight ever
@@BoxingFightsByGaryWilson Holmes in his prime got dropped and almost KO'd by shavers who couldn't even box as good as Foreman, and rumor has it that Shavers did in fact knock out Holmes during a sparing session. Meanwhile Ali when facing parkinsons went toe to toe with both Shavers and Foreman and never was close to being knocked down or KO'd despite taking so many hard body and head shots from both. 70's Ali was still the king.
I’d agree I would say the 1974 version of Ali was the best after his return from exile. I don’t think he was ready to fight Fraser and 71 and it took him a few years to get back his fighting trim. If The Pounding he absorbed in regaining the title took a lot out of him…Manila took the rest.. how he was able to retain the Heavyweight Championship in 1976 and 77 was really pretty amazing. It was all guile and fighting in shorter and shorter spurts always in the last 15 seconds….stealing enough rounds to squeak out some close decisions
Ali was a real Legend. In the 15th Round also, he was more offensive, agressive and charging with Full force. His Stamina was intact and he was successful in exhausting his Opponent. He will always be remembered.
1) the "Knockdown" . it was clear as day that Ali was hit in the body as he was being tripped... He was NOT knocked down by any stretch of the Imagination. 2) the allowing of all the Rabbit Punches. Those two things I would definitely take away. This ref, the poster child for "as dirty as they come", should have let the 15th round fully finish after Wepner was dropped. That would have been true justice. Another interesting moment was right after it was all over, you can clearly see one of the guys from Wepner's corner deliberately throw water in Perez's face and Prez reacts with a weird look on his face... it seems fishy AF! Wepner fought dirty combined with a dirty ref. The "inspiration for Rocky"? How? I don't remember Rocky fighting dirty. I don't find anything inspiring about Wepner in this fight.
Wepner had a head made of Iron. Wasn't talented enough to win....but had tons of heart and ZERO fear....(to a fault). But you gotta hand it to the guy., Good fight
Chuck Wepner boks falan yapmıyor, daha ilk raundun ilk yumruğundan itibaren çakallık yapıyor; çoktan diskalifiye olması gerekirdi. Buna karşın Muhammed Ali ise adeta sanat icra ediyor.

Muhammad Ali legenda tinju terbaik sepanjang mas..very the best ❤
Interesting Wepner can pound at will on back of Ali's head and that's ok with Referee. But Ali does it to Wepner and immediately Referee is all over Ali about it. Poo pretty obvious bias by Referee. I'm glad Ali finished him off at the end. 🙂
The referee Tony Perez has some other bad moments; in the ring at times he just didn't take control.
A quick punch to Tony’s nose should’ve straightened him up
Good
Logique Racisme blanc contre noir
That guy was not fighting like an honest man, Ali was always fighting like a a decent man.
Thank you for this video 🥊👊 So nice to be able to watch these historic matches 😊😎
Cheers for watching & taking time to comment, much appreciated.

Hallo,l've never seen his last boxinng, and I wanted to watch it before, now can obsrve how is that he was winner champion, many thanks for vidéo
The speed of ali's jabs is insane. You can really hear the impact of them
For real, like a piston.
Looked like baseball bats 😳 his hand speed was incredible
Wepner looks like someone's angry uncle who spends his weekends on a park bench shouting at ducks.
Is this an exhibition fight? the knockdown looked fake to me.
@@bobprobert353 you're kidding? the man was exhausted
@@leftundersun Ali wasn't exhausted.
@@bobprobert353 because he was a great athlete
@@bobprobert353 oh, you're talking about Ali's "knockdown"? Sorry, my bad, that was not a knockdown, Ali loose balance when avoiding the punches.
But still, I think it was from this fight that the Great Muhammad Ali began to slow down...health wise and strength wise.
Well done ali never ever lose to white boxing.ever since
@david j.smith....A BRAVE EFFORT??????
Ali got lucky if the ref didn't stop it wepner would've won
Chuck is the example of deficient boxing and, the referee, the one for ineptitude...
The legend Muhammad Ali is the best boxer in the world
I think Wepner stepped on Ali's foot when he went down.
😊😅😮😢❤❤❤❤❤❤ lo

Aloí
the punch was not a known down punch unless he was on Ali's foot. a common tacit if you got away with it. The refereeing was border line at best
ALi gave his hardest punches he ever had in Round 2 and Chuck just ate them. Ali was said to have been shocked later that he didnt knock him out then
Ali as ive known as cassius clay in my teener had done its best to victory and have obseved fair and truthfull equal to the loser and winner and gracefully surrenered his youth.
Of ALL time

Ruhun şad olsun Muhammed Ali ❤
Ali uses his mind and fists in a harmonious fashion. Wepner uses his body. Mind and body together outcomes body alone. Great fighters.
A great fighter, Muhammad Ali of all time. May he rest in peace amen
Thank you very much Mohamed Ali the legend
Ali was just a tremendous athlete who would have excelled in any sport.
😮
😅😅😅😅😅
Even at this late juncture of his career, he could still move with such grace and fluidity
During this period Ali stopped dancing around using his dodging skills and hand speed to score victory. his stance changed considerably.
I wonder why the ref was not intervening despite the numerous blows at the back of Ali's head
I do remember watching this debacle on Wide World of Sports. Yes this IS the fight that Stallone based "Rocky" on. They nicknamed Chuck Wepner -- "the Bayone Bleeder".....please excuse the spelling of Beyone( not sure if its correct).
I wonder how people like WEPNER could have been boxers? They were wrestlers instead.
That ref should be fired. Wepner kept rabbit punching the back of Ali’s head at least 50times. That shit is probably what started Parkinson’s
At the end Mohammed Ali knocked all of the hate out of Wepner! In Jesus Christ name Amen.
ALLAH kabrini nurlandırsın...
Was I the only one who saw the leg kick from wept-now 😂😂😂
I'm inspired to begin screenwriting a blockbuster boxing film, all about a gritty antihero who rabbit-punches his way to ignominy.
I think I'll call it "Chucky."
😂
@@BufordTGleason nah he really didn't take a pounding against Foreman, he blocked most of those shots and barely blinked at the head shots
Daddy putting his baby to sleep, hahaha, hahaha, hahaha!!!
Punchies until the man ends both boxers are good Ali threw great punches that time and Wilson...😢 Sweet hey you there was amazing
It's not about fight but strength and stamina of Ali
Ali was a real Legend. In the 15th Round also, he was more offensive, agressive and charging with Full force. His Stamina was intact and he was successful in exhausting his Opponent. He will always be remembered.
yeah it took the greatest of all time 15 rounds to beat Wepner
This was a great video, well done, the gentleman under me Mike, describe the fight perfectly. I could add nothing.
Why didn't the ref deduct any points from Wepner's repeated rabbit punches?
Muhammad Ali ❤❤
After the fall, Ali got serious and got it a fanfare conclusion Wepner got dirty and kept hitting Ali's back head. RIP GOAT.
The referee should’ve been disqualified. He clearly favored the white man. Pathetic. Despite the odds Ali prevailed
As others have commented before Wepner brutally punished Ali’s hands with his face
Wepner was a really dirty fighrer. Aren't rabbit punches illegal?
His a dirty fighter but he for sure can take a hit
Such a mismatch. Ot shoyld off never been set up. But give wepner credit for hanging in
Chuck Wepner boks falan yapmıyor, daha ilk raundun ilk yumruğundan itibaren çakallık yapıyor; çoktan diskalifiye olması gerekirdi. Buna karşın Muhammed Ali ise adeta sanat icra ediyor.
I got to watch this fight live on German TV while stationed in Giebelstsdt W Germany. The KO was unbelievable in slow motion,a really great fight.
MashaAllah, Allah gave him blessings all over his carrier.
He is respectable and honourable person in Boxing
world forever.
Allah bless him paradise,we proud and thanks for Allah Almighty Subhan hu talah forever.
Ali, The most elegant heavyweight on the planet ever. not in that scene though.. lol 3:51
Fantastico Alì !!!

Mohamed Ali is a smart fighter
The true hero in this match is the one who endured all these blows with full strength and patience. My imagination. I think Clay is tired of throwing so many punches
Ali boxing is diferent from other's boxers Mamahamad Ali i'am sur if someone can beat
Back then Ali didn't hit you just to win the fight, he hit you so you couldn't then drink out of
It was for both the WBA and the WBC championships
Unbelievable how Ali carried this fighter to the amusement of the crowd, even getting knocked down in the process. 🤣😂🤣
Muhamad Ali ❤
Perry,I agree Ali was the GREATEST in & out of the ring.I was lucky enough to train with him in The Miami Beach 5th st Gym.I hav home movies & recordings of the Greatest.
How refreshing not hearing any commentary.
THERE YOU GOES IT WAS IN THE MAKING FOR A LONG TIME
Wepner looks like he had one too many beers before stepping into the ring. The referee too.
So basically this is the original Apollo Creed vs Rocky Balboa match good stuff 👍🏾
