My dad use to plant yams. He would dig a hole about 1ft and place lots of dry leaves and compost. Then he would place the yam to grow. They hardly ever grow much deeper than the hole and was easy to remove from the soil. The worst place to plant yam and potatoes is in hard soil.

I love ube! The vines look pretty too. Purple vines, emerald green leaves with purple veins. No clue why it isnt used as an ornamental vine.

Hey, a fellow southern CA resident trying to grow Ube. I was curious how large the plants have to get before the actual underground growth starts? I couldn’t plant till the middle of July as there were shipping issues that took a couple months. I live in the antelope valley area (Acton). We usually have good sun until the middle or end of November if not December so my plants do have at least a couple of months. There currently have about 13 leaves on the biggest and 10 or so on the rest. I know there will be no harvest this year. However I’m afraid my plants may waste resources growing a vine without growing the actual tuber. I am new to growing Uber and am relatively new to gardening. Any advice on moving forward would be appreciated.

Gary responding. If the yams you are refering to are actually sweet potatoes they may have been irradiated. If they were shipped in from Hawaii they irradiate them to prolong shelf life by preventing them from sprouting. Years ago I grew sweet potatoes from store bought mainland grown. If possible find out where they were grown. A lot of produce is now treated this way. Cabbages, Strawberries etc.

Very informative Gary, any purple vegetable is known to be higher in vitamins, being so high in potassium is even better, my husband's potassium bottoms out sometimes, I grow alot of orange sweet potatoes, but I need to get some purple yams, we can't get them here, any ideas, where I can get the starters.
