I cut my sweet potato in half and lay both halves cut-side down in the water. The roots will grow near the cut and the slips grow form the other end. This way there's no wrong direction.

i put 1 random sweet potato in water, did not rot and its growing now. it had no slips what so ever.. i believe the plant will adapt on which is bottom and which is top, i don´t think the plant really cares..
In California I start them in May indoors using last year's tubers. Then as soon as the nights do not get too cold, say above 60, I plant them outdoors. I use some bonemeal. I harvest when the leaves start to get shabby in Oct or even as late as Nov. Stop watering two weeks before. Allow tubers to "lager" for a month before eating as it will improve flavor.
I recieved a purple sweet potato for Christmas and it stayed in its plastic wrap for about 2 months. It started sprouting in the bag so we put it in a water filled container. It now has beautiful vines spread all over the counter it is on. Thank you for showing how to take slips off to plant new plants. We wanted to plant more for decorating as they are beautiful but were afraid of hurting the tuber.

I mean...I bought some sweet potatoes from Kroger & accidentally forgot about them and now they have slips growing over a foot long lol. You can probably get away with growing slips more often from the supermarket than you would think. I also started two lemon trees from grocery lemon seed. :)
Ooo. I started a blood orange tree from seed. The germination is super slow but when I accidentally knocked my pot over I saw that it was coming out of the seed. I’m so excited

hey summer... I started the light green sweet potatoes. planted them in my flower beds along side a 41/2 ft walk way + with some marigolds,zinnia, cosmos. elephant ear & kiwi vine trellis. 😂😂😂 I ended up with NO walk ways.. and delivery persons wouldn't Walk to My front door because of the jungle .it was amazing.... I love sweet potato vines..thanks..

my kind of gal. i have some sweet potatoes on containers here in the Philippines. here, sweet potatoes are "poor man's food". in first world countries, they seem to be raving about it. the leaves we boil and eat with shrimp paste. the tubers we cook by frying and eating with sugar, boiling or broiling in hot charcoal.
I'm having roasted purple sweet potatoes today with a purple salad (purple kale, raw purple tomatillos from my garden, parmesan and balsamic vinaigrette). :)
Take some straw or lawn clippings and stick the sweet potato in it or put it in a strainer, then put it in a well ventilated area with full sunlight, and water once a day,just enough to get it damp. Allow the water to fully evaporate and dampen it again. Mine started to root in about week and sprouted about 8 days. Don’t over water because the potato is a tuber and tubers have all the moisture and nutrients it needs. You could also stick it in cheap topsoil. Edit: it works a lot faster when the potato is in contact with soil.

Whats fascinating is that most of these sweet potato varieties originated into America, made their way into asia and then eventually made their way back to the US. Apparently purple sweet potatoes have been grown in the carolinas for a long time.

I know this is an old post. But, can't you just put the whole sprouted sweet potato in a pot of soil so you don't have to keep changing the water? I'm going to try it.🌾
I have been growing plants in my room for many years, from plants I've taken from outside and stuff that I have bought or propagated from succulent cutting etc. How do you avoid mold when rooting plants in wet environments like potatoes. I tried to root a potato and it rooted a little and than got all moldy and nasty.

My windows face East north east, but I still have a huge hibiscus tree and lots of jasmine ,asparagus fern, bay tree, norfolk pine, patchouli, begonia, spider plant, jade, snake plant, yucca, palmetto, spathiphyllum, kalanchoe, orchids, gardenia, agave, peperomia, maranta, dracaena marinata, peyote, dwarf orange, plectranthus chinese evergreen, ivy, christmas cactus, some kinds of succulents, and a money tree. They know I love them to pieces and they all do well. Plants and crystals...what more could you want except maybe a chicken and of course a doggie.:)
You can harvest sweet potatoes every 3 months, that means, you'll have sweet potatoes the whole year around but you'll have to have them in separates containers if you wanted to harvester every 3 months.

@@TruthLove333 The sweet potatoes are doing great. I'm going to harvest them in the next couple of weeks. The trellis idea didn't work. The vines didn't grow long or fast enough to make it worth it. I just harvest the greens off the ground to keep them from taking over adjacent beds.
That's great to know Summer... I have a habit of buying a sweet potato to make and by the time I get to it it's already sprouted. Today I went to bake it and sure enough it had slips growing on it lol, at the pointed side btw, so I stuck it straight in a jar with a little water and letting it grow. For some reason whenever I try to grow it in well-draining soil it does well for awhile then dies off so I'm keeping it in water this time.😁
what plant's work symbiotic like corn and beans? can you graft different eatable plants together? make a symbiotic plant. have even more diversity in a small space.
Come and visit Philippines Summer you'll get a lot of those purple color potatoes. The leaves and the stems are edible to. We use to boil them in water and drink it as a tea mixed with calamansi/small green lemons w/ more citrusy flavor and honey. They are good in blood circulation. We also use it for salads mixed with tomatoes, red onions, garlic, ground pepper paired w/ fried fish called Galunggong you should tried it. We also use it just like spinach mixed in soups just boiled it in water with onions, tomatoe, garlic and ginger salt and pepper to taste.
I am growing a sweet potatoes houseplants. Was going to take some of the slips & plant them in our garden this year. But we decided not to do a garden this year , due to my husband fixing to have back surgery.

Have you tried growing yams - completely different than sweet potatoes. Yams tend to get even larger than sweet potatoes, but are propagated in a similar way as sweet potatoes.
I plan on growing this in a 7 gallon grow bag. Most likely indoors. What other edible plants/spices/veggies/fruits can I place in the same bag? How many shoots can I grow in the bag without overcrowding it?
I tried growing Molokai purple sweet potatoes last year in the UK. These were from slips like the ones you've shown in your video. I planted 2 of these in a medium sized potato sack. Eventually there was quite a luxurious growth of leaves on the top and I thought I was doing well. After about 100 days I decided to dig down and see if there were any sizable potatoes. There were no tubers formed at all only a massive root system. Should I have waited longer or do you think it's a waste of time trying to grow them in a comparatively cool climate? Thats an interesting question. See, that's what I'd like if I try this. I wouldn't mind having one potato for just a foliage indoor plant but have it not produce tubers in its planter pot. Would there be anyway to fertilize it to emphasize green foliage and root production but less so on producing tubers? But then a potato vine's whole purpose is to produce tubers isn't it? So would the plant eventually deteriorate if its not producing tubers?
Well, I know very little about these plants apart from my own experience trying to grow them (without much success) outside in the garden. If you're only interested in the green foliage and aren't interested in obtaining tubers then go right ahead. I would have thought though that the whole point of growing sweet potatoes was to develop tubers which could be used in the kitchen and eventually eaten as they're supposed to have antioxidant qualities and are beneficial for health. I have used some Growmore fertilizer but it made no difference to the outcome. I would recommend Miracle Grow All Purpose Plant Food. I'm going to have another go at growing these but may try another method ( growing in the greenhouse probably). I'd like to get some advice from the good lady in this video but I'm sure she's far too busy.

Providentially I came across yours..as,for three weeks the sweet potato I put in a plastic container with water..developed stems n leaves n is growing almost like a creeper.. You said we can saute the leaves..but I want to grow. No garden space. I live in an apartment. How to grow in an earthern pot please ! Trying gardening for the first time. Im well over the hill. Did not try greens in my green days..now hay days..hahaha !!!!
Hi. To Mr Gill, Perez and Roxie. The sweet potato vine is ORNAMENTAL only. I bought mine from Home Depot, this year, for a hanger in my container on the front porch. They are beautiful and the run EVERYWHERE just like the potatos will which are used for food. You can NOT start just a vine from a potato, it will replicate potatoes. 😏. Good luck finding some this late they are very popular.

You can tell what is the top or bottom of a sweet potato before it starts growing. If you study the formations on its surface, you could see it and describe it.
How do you get the slips on the original tuber to be so lush and green? I grew this mainly to green up our apartment - no garden space to grow it (unless I put a 5 gallon bucket on my fire escape - ssshhhhh, don’t tell). It grew really leggy and viny, and lost most of its leaves. Is the key to keep pulling slips out before they get too long? What will happen if I cut those vines shorter?

What on earth.. put them in a seedling drip tray on their sides with dirt piled partway up and keep them watered.. they'll spit out at least 2 dozen slips in 2 weeks if you keep them properly warm and moist

What if I where to plant these in my leaf pile that I've been watering? just last years leafs with some sticks in it. Put cut in water and change water every three days.

You can also put the leaves in a smoothie, stir fry or smoothie. I love eating the greens raw. They have more of a crunch than spinach.

my walk ways are 4 1/2 ftx 30 ft each...but the4 potatoes vines took care of that dead space...😉

I use the sweet potato greens in my green smoothies. I'm actually devoting a plot to try growing Okinawan sweet potato greens on a trellis.

@@TruthLove333 The sweet potatoes are doing great. I'm going to harvest them in the next couple of weeks. The trellis idea didn't work. The vines didn't grow long or fast enough to make it worth it. I just harvest the greens off the ground to keep them from taking over adjacent beds.
That's great to know Summer... I have a habit of buying a sweet potato to make and by the time I get to it it's already sprouted. Today I went to bake it and sure enough it had slips growing on it lol, at the pointed side btw, so I stuck it straight in a jar with a little water and letting it grow. For some reason whenever I try to grow it in well-draining soil it does well for awhile then dies off so I'm keeping it in water this time.😁
what plant's work symbiotic like corn and beans? can you graft different eatable plants together? make a symbiotic plant. have even more diversity in a small space.

I have just cut up a sweet potato with slips and placed it in my flowers pots and in time the vines just start growing.
never had an issue growing sweet potatoes, just picked them up at the grocery store, they always root for me

Come and visit Philippines Summer you'll get a lot of those purple color potatoes. The leaves and the stems are edible to. We use to boil them in water and drink it as a tea mixed with calamansi/small green lemons w/ more citrusy flavor and honey. They are good in blood circulation. We also use it for salads mixed with tomatoes, red onions, garlic, ground pepper paired w/ fried fish called Galunggong you should tried it. We also use it just like spinach mixed in soups just boiled it in water with onions, tomatoe, garlic and ginger salt and pepper to taste.
The leaves are better than spinach to me 😌

I am growing a sweet potatoes houseplants. Was going to take some of the slips & plant them in our garden this year. But we decided not to do a garden this year , due to my husband fixing to have back surgery.

just lay them sideways on moistened potting soil. faster, no rot, no messy tangled roots, no dirty water
This works well. But changing the water daily/every other day on a sideways placed one will work. Plus adding a heat mat. That will rocket the growth.

Have you tried growing yams - completely different than sweet potatoes. Yams tend to get even larger than sweet potatoes, but are propagated in a similar way as sweet potatoes.
I plan on growing this in a 7 gallon grow bag. Most likely indoors. What other edible plants/spices/veggies/fruits can I place in the same bag? How many shoots can I grow in the bag without overcrowding it?
I tried growing Molokai purple sweet potatoes last year in the UK. These were from slips like the ones you've shown in your video. I planted 2 of these in a medium sized potato sack. Eventually there was quite a luxurious growth of leaves on the top and I thought I was doing well. After about 100 days I decided to dig down and see if there were any sizable potatoes. There were no tubers formed at all only a massive root system. Should I have waited longer or do you think it's a waste of time trying to grow them in a comparatively cool climate? Thats an interesting question. See, that's what I'd like if I try this. I wouldn't mind having one potato for just a foliage indoor plant but have it not produce tubers in its planter pot. Would there be anyway to fertilize it to emphasize green foliage and root production but less so on producing tubers? But then a potato vine's whole purpose is to produce tubers isn't it? So would the plant eventually deteriorate if its not producing tubers?
Well, I know very little about these plants apart from my own experience trying to grow them (without much success) outside in the garden. If you're only interested in the green foliage and aren't interested in obtaining tubers then go right ahead. I would have thought though that the whole point of growing sweet potatoes was to develop tubers which could be used in the kitchen and eventually eaten as they're supposed to have antioxidant qualities and are beneficial for health. I have used some Growmore fertilizer but it made no difference to the outcome. I would recommend Miracle Grow All Purpose Plant Food. I'm going to have another go at growing these but may try another method ( growing in the greenhouse probably). I'd like to get some advice from the good lady in this video but I'm sure she's far too busy.

No need to wait or guess at which side is up. Lay it flat half burried in some soil and it’ll sprout just fine.

Providentially I came across yours..as,for three weeks the sweet potato I put in a plastic container with water..developed stems n leaves n is growing almost like a creeper.. You said we can saute the leaves..but I want to grow. No garden space. I live in an apartment. How to grow in an earthern pot please ! Trying gardening for the first time. Im well over the hill. Hi. To Mr Gill, Perez and Roxie. The sweet potato vine is ORNAMENTAL only. I bought mine from Home Depot, this year, for a hanger in my container on the front porch. They are beautiful and the run EVERYWHERE just like the potatos will which are used for food.
You can NOT start just a vine from a potato, it will replicate potatoes. 😏. Good luck finding some this late they are very popular.

I've had great growth but within the past week my sweet plant has been a growing issue of white spots, undercurling and leggy vines. I'm not sure if it's a mite or humidity issue and was curious if you have experience this at all? If so, how did you resolve?

You can tell what is the top or bottom of a sweet potato before it starts growing. If you study the formations on its surface, you could see it and describe it.
wont matter, it will root either direction. Commercial farmers lay them on their side on a "bed" so to speak. They sprout from pretty much everywhere.
How do you get the slips on the original tuber to be so lush and green? I grew this mainly to green up our apartment - no garden space to grow it (unless I put a 5 gallon bucket on my fire escape - ssshhhhh, don’t tell). It grew really leggy and viny, and lost most of its leaves. Is the key to keep pulling slips out before they get too long? What will happen if I cut those vines shorter?
I bought an organic sweet potato.. and after a two weeks it star to see the slip, so I planted in dirt the whole tube and slip grow 4inch now. Do I need to cut or propagate the slip or can I leave in the dirt and grow it there? Thank you…😊😊😊

How often do you change the water for the purple potato rooted in the hyacinth jar with plenty of leaves on top? There are so many roots, it is hard to fit them back into the jar when changing the water. How do you handle this? Afraid of breaking roots.

What on earth.. put them in a seedling drip tray on their sides with dirt piled partway up and keep them watered.. they'll spit out at least 2 dozen slips in 2 weeks if you keep them properly warm and moist

What if I where to plant these in my leaf pile that I've been watering? just last years leafs with some sticks in it. The pile is pretty loose and not so decayed since I just started to water the pile.
