- If it's one tuber I love, it's the purple sweet potato! I've been growing a TON of slips in the home-in order to transplant outdoors in my community garden, and as such, I've been getting a number of requests to do a tutorial on this, so without further ado: growing, propagating and planting purple sweet potatoes!

the leaves are actually delicious; in Taiwan we eat those in the mountains.

I watched videos about sweet potatoes and have 20 containers with massive vines coming out I started to panic not wanting any of them to perish. I cut my sweet potato in half and lay both halves cut-side down in the water. The roots will grow near the cut and the slips grow form the other end. This way there's no wrong direction.

@@temitopeoshokoya4906 change it if it gets smelly or slimy or colored.. sweet potato seems to be easy to grow.. mine is growing slow, but only very basic care is needed.
If you cut them, which part do you put in water? With cut in water directly or uncut part in water?
You can also put the leaves in a smoothie, stir fry or smoothie. I love eating the greens raw. They have more of a crunch than spinach.
I found purple sweet potatoes at my local Asian market. They were super cheap. I bought three (two to eat and one to grow). The first one rotted because I did it wrong. To be fair I’ve never grown potatoes. The second try is super success full so far. I also did a normal sweet potato and it seems to be doing great. I’m so excited!
I bought it yesterday at Asian Market, but it was $3.99 a pound. I thought it was kind pricey . I am eating two for the first time and and I love the taste. The other two I will plant them.
i put 1 random sweet potato in water, did not rot and its growing now. it had no slips what so ever.. i believe the plant will adapt on which is bottom and which is top, i don´t think the plant really cares..
The leaves are good for fish soups with ginger, onion, garlic,salt and pepper. So yummy.

Thank you for the super detailed tutorial. It really helps for a total beginner like me. I grew up eating the sweet potato leaves in south-east asia, not knowing how to plant them until I am living abroad alone and have found my sweet potato sprouted without knowing what to do. And here I am inspired by your tutorial! Thank you!
In California I start them in May indoors using last year's tubers. Then as soon as the nights do not get too cold, say above 60, I plant them outdoors. I use some bonemeal. I harvest when the leaves start to get shabby in Oct or even as late as Nov. Stop watering two weeks before. Allow tubers to "lager" for a month before eating as it will improve flavor.

I recieved a purple sweet potato for Christmas and it stayed in its plastic wrap for about 2 months. It started sprouting in the bag so we put it in a water filled container. It now has beautiful vines spread all over the counter it is on. Thank you for showing how to take slips off to plant new plants. We wanted to plant more for decorating as they are beautiful but were afraid of hurting the tuber.
I mean...I bought some sweet potatoes from Kroger & accidentally forgot about them and now they have slips growing over a foot long lol. You can probably get away with growing slips more often from the supermarket than you would think.
I also started two lemon trees from grocery lemon seed. :)
Ooo. I started a blood orange tree from seed. The germination is super slow but when I accidentally knocked my pot over I saw that it was coming out of the seed. I’m so excited

I started the light green sweet potatoes. planted them in my flower beds along side a 41/2 ft walk way + with some marigolds,zinnia, cosmos. elephant ear & kiwi vine trellis. 😂😂😂
I ended up with NO walk ways.. and delivery persons wouldn't Walk to My front door because of the jungle .it was amazing.... I love sweet potato vines..thanks..
my walk ways are 4 1/2 ftx 30 ft each...but the4 potatoes vines took care of that dead space...😉

I love homemade French fries dipped in balsamic vinegar dressing. Sometimes I combine poppyseed dressing with balsamic vinegar, so good!
Whats fascinating is that most of these sweet potato varieties originated into America, made their way into asia and then eventually made their way back to the US. Apparently purple sweet potatoes have been grown in the carolinas for a long time.

I actually threw my sweet potato in the garden, oh my god its everywhere . but you taught me a great deal - how to know the top from the bottom .I mostly appreciate the loving way you told people that its costing you $13.00 and some without demanding that they pay!?! lol . but i think people should just send you $ 20.00 or more its just so kind of you ! I live in the UK and got some purple sweet potatoes from USA in a store nearby . They taste awesome ! Already started to grow a few leaves so left it in the sunniest window with a plastic botlle on top ( for extra heat and moisture retention ) .Looking forward to plant them out , no earlier then May ..All the best !

My windows face East north east, but I still have a huge hibiscus tree and lots of jasmine ,asparagus fern, bay tree, norfolk pine, patchouli, begonia, spider plant, jade, snake plant, yucca, palmetto, spathiphyllum, kalanchoe, orchids, gardenia, agave, peperomia, maranta, dracaena marinata, peyote, dwarf orange, plectranthus chinese evergreen, ivy, christmas cactus, some kinds of succulents, and a money tree. They know I love them to pieces and they all do well. Plants and crystals...what more could you want except maybe a chicken and of course a doggie.:)

Awesome walk-thru! Happy to have found your channel. I didn't know you could grow sweet potatoes as beautiful plants until my grandmother gave me one already in water, no growth yet. A week later and that thing had 2' long vines (or slips as I now know!) Jumped online to see what the heck to do w/ it bc it's out of control !!! Very impressed by this plant, I must say. -CHEERS

That's great to know Summer... I have a habit of buying a sweet potato to make and by the time I get to it it's already sprouted. Today I went to bake it and sure enough it had slips growing on it lol, at the pointed side btw, so I stuck it straight in a jar with a little water and letting it grow. For some reason whenever I try to grow it in well-draining soil it does well for awhile then dies off so I'm keeping it in water this time.😁
my kind of gal. i have some sweet potatoes on containers here in the Philippines. here, sweet potatoes are "poor man's food". in first world countries, they seem to be raving about it.
the leaves we boil and eat with shrimp paste. the tubers we cook by frying and eating with sugar, boiling or broiling in hot charcoal.

I have been growing plants in my room for many years, from plants I've taken from outside and stuff that I have bought or propagated from succulent cutting etc. How do you avoid mold when rooting plants in wet environments like potatoes. I tried to root a potato and it rooted a little and than got all moldy and nasty.

I use the sweet potato greens in my green smoothies. I'm actually devoting a plot to try growing Okinawan sweet potato greens on a trellis.

@@TruthLove333 The sweet potatoes are doing great. I'm going to harvest them in the next couple of weeks. The trellis idea didn't work. The vines didn't grow long or fast enough to make it worth it. I just harvest the greens off the ground to keep them from taking over adjacent beds.
Take some straw or lawn clippings and stick the sweet potato in it or put it in a strainer, then put it in a well ventilated area with full sunlight, and water once a day,just enough to get it damp. Allow the water to fully evaporate and dampen it again.
Mine started to root in about week and sprouted about 8 days. Don’t over water because the potato is a tuber and tubers have all the moisture and nutrients it needs. You could also stick it in cheap topsoil.
Edit: it works a lot faster when the potato is in contact with soil.

You can harvest sweet potatoes every 3 months, that means, you'll have sweet potatoes the whole year around but you'll have to have them in separates containers if you wanted to harvester every 3 months.
No you cannot. Especially here in Michigan.
I know this is an old post. But, can't you just put the whole sprouted sweet potato in a pot of soil so you don't have to keep changing the water?

I have just cut up a sweet potato with slips and placed it in my flowers pots and in time the vines just start growing.

I am growing a sweet potatoes houseplants. Was going to take some of the slips & plant them in our garden this year. But we decided not to do a garden this year , due to my husband fixing to have back surgery.

Thanks for the well explanatory video on how to achieve starts. Do you have any information on when to start planting them in the grown. I live in the Deep South of Texas
I plan on growing this in a 7 gallon grow bag. Most likely indoors. What other edible plants/spices/veggies/fruits can I place in the same bag? How many shoots can I grow in the bag without overcrowding it?

At 9:33, you talk about planting in a loose medium to not shock the plant.
What if I where to plant these in my leaf pile that I've been watering? just last years leafs with some sticks in it. The pile is pretty loose and not so decayed since I just started to water the pile.

what plant's work symbiotic like corn and beans? can you graft different eatable plants together? make a symbiotic plant. have even more diversity in a small space.
Come and visit Philippines Summer you'll get a lot of those purple color potatoes. The leaves and the stems are edible to. We use to boil them in water and drink it as a tea mixed with calamansi/small green lemons w/ more citrusy flavor and honey. They are good in blood circulation. We also use it for salads mixed with tomatoes, red onions, garlic, ground pepper paired w/ fried fish called Galunggong you should tried it. We also use it just like spinach mixed in soups just boiled it in water with onions, tomatoe, garlic and ginger salt and pepper to taste.
Good video Summer! Curious how long you have kept the same sweet potato for making slips. You say it is possible for it to continue for years? Please update on this if you can. I have not heard of them lasting more than the first dozen or so slips. Thanks.

Have you encountered white spots developing on your sweet potatoe leaves? I've had great growth but within the past week my sweet plant has been a growing issue of white spots, undercurling and leggy vines. I'm not sure if it's a mite or humidity issue and was curious if you have experience this at all? If so, how did you resolve?

Does it only specifically work with sweet potatoes, or can you do a regular red or white potato?
How do you get the slips on the original tuber to be so lush and green? I grew this mainly to green up our apartment - no garden space to grow it (unless I put a 5 gallon bucket on my fire escape - ssshhhhh, don’t tell). It grew really leggy and viny, and lost most of its leaves. Is the key to keep pulling slips out before they get too long? What will happen if I cut those vines shorter?
No need to wait or guess at which side is up. Lay it flat half burried in some soil and it’ll sprout just fine.
I just bought a sp vine from Lowe's called, Spotlight Sweet Potato Vine -are these the same thing?? Lol Mine has like 4 skinny leaves & is a neon (yellow) color, not green o.O

How often do you change the water for the purple potato rooted in the hyacinth jar with plenty of leaves on top? There are so many roots, it is hard to fit them back into the jar when changing the water. How do you handle this? Afraid of breaking roots.

I stuck my purple sweet potato in a little water in a glass and it is growing slips now. But l just put about 1 inch and kept it at that level.
Hi. To Mr Gill, Perez and Roxie. The sweet potato vine is ORNAMENTAL only. I bought mine from Home Depot, this year, for a hanger in my container on the front porch. They are beautiful and the run EVERYWHERE just like the potatos will which are used for food.
You can NOT start just a vine from a potato, it will replicate potatoes. 😏. Good luck finding some this late they are very popular.

Its 7.33 pm n I'm on my way home from work in a bus caught in heavy traffic jam in Mumbai. I was looking for a video that shows,me how to cut the slips and plant. Providentially I came across yours..as,for three weeks the sweet potato I put in a plastic container with water..developed stems n leaves n is growing almost like a creeper.. You said we can saute the leaves..but I want to grow. No garden space. I live in an apartment. How to grow in an earthern pot please ! Trying gardening for the first time. Im well over the hill. Did not try greens in my green days..now hay days..hahaha !!!!

After you cut the vine from the potato and place in water can it live there permanently or do i need to plant it in soil once the roots are big enough?
I tried growing Molokai purple sweet potatoes last year in the UK. These were from slips like the ones you've shown in your video. I planted 2 of these in a medium sized potato sack. Eventually there was quite a luxurious growth of leaves on the top and I thought I was doing well. After about 100 days I decided to dig down and see if there were any sizable potatoes. There were no tubers formed at all only a massive root system. Should I have waited longer or do you think it's a waste of time trying to grow them in a comparatively cool climate? Thats an interesting question. See, that's what I'd like if I try this. I wouldn't mind having one potato for just a foliage indoor plant but have it not produce tubers in its planter pot. Would there be anyway to fertilize it to emphasize green foliage and root production but less so on producing tubers? But then a potato vine's whole purpose is to produce tubers isn't it? So would the plant eventually deteriorate if its not producing tubers?
Well, I know very little about these plants apart from my own experience trying to grow them (without much success) outside in the garden. If you're only interested in the green foliage and aren't interested in obtaining tubers then go right ahead. I would have thought though that the whole point of growing sweet potatoes was to develop tubers which could be used in the kitchen and eventually eaten as they're supposed to have antioxidant qualities and are beneficial for health. I have used some Growmore fertilizer but it made no difference to the outcome. I would recommend Miracle Grow All Purpose Plant Food. I'm going to have another go at growing these but may try another method ( growing in the greenhouse probably). I'd like to get some advice from the good lady in this video but I'm sure she's far too busy.

Sweet potato vibe is NOT the same as a Slip, vibes are decorative plants that's one thing ND is different from an actual potato plant. I can't write a really long answer.

I live in an aparment, I have access to grow light. How do I use a potato grow bag to grow potato in door. Whats the best substrate to use and do I need a heating pad? I now have slips that I need to plant.
I've been saving a red potato and it's growing the little starts of a plant growing but I have a big bruise on it now is it still okay to plant that?
I eat the leaves raw. They have replaced lettuce in my diet and the potatoes produce so much greens I don’t eat enough greens to make a dent in my 6 Sweet potato patch.
Video lady over complicated the process. You can stuff a potato in the dirt, in a pot or whatever, and it will grow. Up or down doesn’t matter the leaves will find their way up. If you start one in water, you can just sit it in any cup of water. You don’t need a $3 pot or a $1 cup. Any cup is fine. Coffee cup. Dixie cup. Just let it sit in water. And if the whole potato isn’t completely submerged it won’t rot. The eyes will pop out of the water. You probably even could completely submerged a potato in water and it’ll still grow. I am convinced that if I threw a potato on my lawn it would sprout and take over my yard but I will have to try it.

Hi came across your UA-cam page today an i like all the plants you have and the advice thank you because i have plants that i dnt know the name of them lol. I love plants i have a lot of them but not as u do lol but any way I know how to make sweet potatoes slips but i been trying to find the white sweet potatoes to get slips for by any chance do they have the white sweet potatoes their. Here in st. louis,mo you cant find them they get brought out so fast I cant catch them lol
You can buy OHenry and Bonita slips (both white sweet potato's) from Louisiana. Check out the LSU Agcenter Sweet potato research station ;)
Could you take the slip off and keep growing it in the water instead of planting in soil?
