Hey dude thank you so much for making Knave! I just bought it on your itch.io page and just reading the rules and their hack-able simplicity, I've fallen in love. Keep up the great work
Cmike here, I'm starting to DM and am making a series about what I'm learning as a beginner DM and how I'm trying to find my style of storytelling, by "using" my friend's in a off camera adventure as my workshop. So this video speaks so many truths to me. Love it, you mad scientist you!!

All I knew was a handful of staple monsters and a loose grasp of how the game actually worked. So I made my own super loose game logic and basically told my friends "You can do whatever you want, so long as you can roll it." It may have been the most far-off thing from DND but it was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had, it might help that I am pretty creative, do video game design, and have a plethora of monsters I've made at my disposal but who knows.
That happened for my first ever game of 5e :) i wanted to play as smough from dark souls 1, and we went through the entire character creation provess until we arrived at weight. I rolled max on it and we messed up the multiplier so i think he got... several tons? Every "streneous" action i took had a 1/20 chance to cause an earthquake, and then i rolled to see how bad it was on the rivhter scale (d10). First ever encounter and i ended up burying the town we were heading to in a category 8 earthquake. After that i ended up straight up creating the grand canyon after my character stumbled down a hill. Good game, but we only played one session.

Having the players involved in map creation is an idea I've been playing with for when I eventually run my first game, so I'm happy to hear someone else's opinion on it! I only thought of having a hometown, never about where the players would like to go so that's a super interesting idea I might just steal. Thanks for the video!

This video gave me the idea of deleting almost 50+ hours of a gunsligner oriented D&D campaign and creating my own tabletop RPG as well. Thank you so much for sharing your passion, very encouraging for me as an artist! And huge thanks to Kave as well for allowing to understand basic tabletop rpg concepts ❤️ can't wait to see where both our games will grow
The best thing in this: you do sound like having fun while designing your own RPG system. It would be interesting to hear more in-depth info on how you approach(ed) various aspects of this. E.g. balance. Or cutting out content/ideas (if that is/was a thing at all).
Omg this is the only video I've seen, and I already love you! I was hooked when I saw you hit the books, I was like "oh dang he's All In. Yeehaw!" Also your art style and aesthetic are super cool, and your creative process is very inspiring! Now I want to try smashing words together and seeing what happens!!!
Maybe if you shot it and it collides with a object or creature it rapidly exoands into bouncy or sticky foam maybe even immobilize the target. What do you think
@@nathanex5122 Yeah, just imagining a venom-wad slapping into someone and then turning into a sticky foam. Sounds lethal, even without the movement-snare effect. I was originally only imagining it sputtering and foaming from the caster’s hands as they were preparing the spell, becoming an extra foamy mess once it collided with the target is much cooler. I guess it could do both, even! 😁
5:00 I love the idea of spell books being unique things. I'm picturing beginning characters having a mass produced basic spellbook, or a family spellbook that's been added to for generations, and on their adventures they might acquire a more advanced spellbook from another mage for completing a quest, or they might find an ancient book of spells deep within a dungeon. Scrolls in DnD are kind of like that, but the way you put it is so much more personal and now I really want to figure out how to incorporate that idea into DnD.
Wow! That's whole darkness and craziness sound so awesome, I just want to see more of that later! Also, FYI, there's an app called "Foundry VTT", where you can play and customize existing RPG systems. But you can also create your own system, so you don't need to think about dices and math
I keep coming back to this series to be inspired. I love the way you think about game design, and the way you’re sticking to your style gives me confidence in my own! Best of luck with Arcane Ugly going forwards!
Now I really want to play this game lol. I could just imagine the possibilities. The idea of the different starter weapons having weird effects and bizarre spellbooks with funny names gives me some serious adventure time vibes. I'm looking forwards to it! And if it's simple enough to play, I could totally see myself playing it with my younger brothers. Keep it up my guy!
this is super cool, I really like the idea that the monsters in this world are adventures who have done too much magic or been cursed so much that they are now just monsters, I think the kitbashed models could really help to sell that idea... anyway, i love the video keep up the good work!
This looks brilliant! I love the aesthetic you're going for with this game, a simpler rules set with lots of space for ridiculous shenanigans and crazy magical mishaps. Very Chaos of you. Love the video
I love the absolute head-first dive into OSR gaming! Also, the moment you mentioned a class-less, level-less system where you level up by magic items, Knave was literally the first thing that came to mind, so glad to see that it was the obvious choice for you too!
So glad i found your channel dude! mixing some of my most favourite hobby's! and your mini work and how you went about creating your own table top rpg is truely inspiring! Cheers from the netherlands!
This feels very akin to dungeon crawl classics in certain ways, recently one of my absolute favorite systems. I love the process you went though in creating this and think it looks incredibly interesting!
Hi Trent. I've just started my own journey in game design and a UA-cam channel, and my friend just pointed me to your channel. Just wanted to say your work and broad creative exploration is super inspiring, I'm really enjoying all the playful ways that you're coming up with, documenting and expressing your ideas. The little lightbox frame for drawing on the opposite side of the paper is a neat visual treat, and your game sounds fantastic! Definitely following your work and hope my channel compliments yours in the space of making games! Thanks and looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!
This video was really awesome to watch. It was interesting as an rpg enthusiast, but most importantly it was educational. Sooo many great ideas. And good thoughts on books and... just great work, thanks for sharing, I'm excited about your rpg, all your ideas fit my needs (drop in/out games, consequences, wild magic etc) I'd like to play it already with my friends.
This sounds awesome! I wanted to do a DnD session with my family while they’re all in the house, and this sounds a lot more accessible to them than DnD and super fun.
the idea that I can't get out of my head is a rules-lite system that you could play on a long car trip. No maps, minis, or dice! character sheets on clipboards. very theater of the mind type game. the closest thing I've found is Dungeon World. I'll definitely check out Knave it seems awesome! if anyone has any thoughts or recommendations on my idea please share them.
I know this comment was posted a long time ago so you likely won't see this or care about this but here goes anyway. If you've never heard of City of Mist I definitely recommend you go check out Runesmith's video on it. It a very cinematic, rules lite system that doesn't require minis or anything although I think it still needs dice (sorry I'm not completely sure). I've never played it myself and I don't really know too much about it but it sounds like it could be useful for you! Love your idea btw! Something like this would be AMAZING for me as I get sick doing basically anything in cars that isn't just sitting, talking and listening to music. Anyway, sorry for the long comment, good luck!
@@remarkablysquare3216 hey thank you for commenting. Yes I have heard of city of mist it does look like a really cool game. My wife gets carsick too quite often she uses a sea band. Something to distract people from their car sickness would be useful 😁

If I find anymore cool game systems I'll make sure to comment them here, but right now that's the only one I know of that relates to your idea (and you already knew about it so :/). This reminds me of an rpg I made to play with my family called Myth & Magic (M&M) where all challenges were resolved by pulling m&ms out of a bag. Also, all spells were created on the fly by mashing together 3 different different words on a table. It was incredibly weird and a great time.
For monster creater I just remembered these kids books that are in 3 parts and depending which part you flip the animal changes, so you might get a bear, bunny, frog...one with monsters would be great.
I'm so hyped, this game sounds awesome. I've been looking for a good combat-heavy/rules-light rpg, and not only does this fit that bill, but the theme is so alluring.
Really dig this. Been running Knave for 1hr lunchtime games, and while its good it definitly needs tweaks to make your own. The spell creation system for Maze Rats is fun too if you havent seen that (similar to mashing words together, but split into magical traits, utility, etc.) Keen to see how this system comes together!
Your videos are neat. Your cinematography is novel. I just keep rewatching these videos... Love the art... The video effects.. And your review of knave...
I this is very cool seeing someone else doing the same thing and looking for that type of game play as well. Very creepy actually how close everything you are doing is so close to what I am doing. Can’t wait to buy it when it’s out! I love small zine RPGs good to see more getting out there.
yay! runehammer, will toats look up Knave. love ALL your work, kitbashing, creative process analysis, sense of adventure. well done, very good, 10/10, excellence, works well with others, a fine rolemodel for peers, ace-pants (I'm trying to get traction on this last one, so I'll repeat: Ace Pants.)
Bro, I'm making my own rpg from scratch, I can't wait to see more from you on this. I'm big on google docs for my story and game mechanics. I'm trying to make things simple and out of the box, but in an expansive world where you can do anything you can imagine. Cosmic horror / science fantasy is my general direction rn.
Sounds excellent. The more folks who are interested in roleplaying, the more variety in rules there needs to be, especially the quick to learn fast to play kind of rules. Interested to see what you cook up.
Id love a bibliography list off all the games you found and bought for research. I've got a small shelf devoted to unique, quirky, or small print games that I really want to add to.
Recently had an idea for a sci-fi tabletop game inspired by things like Warhammer, Infinity, the Halo Series, and Gears of War. You know mixing some war horror with sci-fi and adding quite a bit of future tech and futuristic wonder in general (think like city of tomorrow type wonder) but always wondered how to figure out to go about it. Gonna do a bit more research but this video helped quite a bit just in overall pushing forward my view of how best to go about it
The simplest rule to circumvent lots of dice roles and calculating I ever saw was a card result system. Simplest Form is just 'success/failure' and then it all depends on the players description of the action and how sensical and believable it is for their character. You an scale that up with more variations instead of failure and success and to not have to make cards, you could just make a list with a die table. Also the most engaging and immersive, since it's just roleplay after roleplay, even in normally rule heavy situations. Also there is a whole category of 1 rule page pen and paper games, but I bet you saw then when getting books.
@@Miscast sadly I can't give you a name, I only heard it being described, but never found out from what game, but I believe diceless or dice light games are a niche of their own
I remember trying to make a tabletop game. It was supposed to be all Hard Sci-Fi (Where all the Tech needed to have either a Real-life counterpart or otherwise have solid & consistent rules) and extremely homebrew friendly. I might still make it eventually, but for now it's a bunch of loose ideas I have to wrangle.
I am such a nerd for the Warhammer Fantasy world that I just play their RPG (with some modifications). But I really liked your monster-creation. Of that I want to see more.
Been running Runehammer's ICRPG all year. I recommend it to anyone looking for something simple to run and easy to hack. Also, keep going on that nurgle army! Gotta make it to at least 7 videos to call it complete
You should have a growing weapon A rusty sword that grows as you do and you can upgrade withenchanments that can be temporary or last for the rest of the game Ex: You find a bow with a rather strange engraving in a language nobody can understand because it is older than language itself. You pick it up and you realize that it’s magic c ue the player being able to choose from a set of abilities near his/her level like after you fire an arrow your next arrow can be twice as powerful but will give you blank amount of damage or it’s just fire not the arrows but the bow and later on you can craft or find certain gems or stones with the same engraving as was on the bow. These stones or gems or scrolls or whatever you choose can upgrade the bows stats by just giving it better flat damage and maybe giving the arrows poison or something like Ichor from terraria but also allowing the player to choose a new ability that can stack with the old or something that can be completely new maybe the new bow will turn you into a wolf rabbit hybrid for 3 turns after you fire 3 arrows. Sorry for my bad English and hopefully you take some of my ideas and add them into your amazing game that I can’t wait to buy once it’s completed.
I couldn't find your game pdf... So I got a copy of knave and hacked it up as you video shared... Only using my instincts. I love what you inspired here

Oh my god, I wanna play this soo much
Id love a bibliography list off all the games you found and bought for research. I've got a small shelf devoted to unique, quirky, or small print games that I really want to add to.
Very invested in this dude, please keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do! More to come!
I love the wacky magic feel, its kinda like adventure time which is a good thing
Gonna do a bit more research but this video helped quite a bit just in overall pushing forward my view of how best to go about it
MORK BORG! HELL YEAH! Myself, my wife, and my little sister have been doom-metaling our way through a ton of MB since quarantine.
Magic always being risky reminds me of CoC's magic system, though I guess it's closer to everyone being a wild magic sorcerer in D&D.
I kinda want to buy this I love the concept . Please make sure you sell this! I would 100% buy it!!!
Interesting, I'll have to experiment with that. I've seen a couple of 1 page games in my hunt yes, I might dig a bit more now though.
I'm very interested in watching the next episode of this.
Hey, this came to me as I was getting ready to playtest my own TTRPG. Ya did good, UA-cam content
Been running Runehammer's ICRPG all year. I recommend it to anyone looking for something simple to run and easy to hack.
Also, keep going on that nurgle army! Gotta make it to at least 7 videos to call it complete
Wicked! Yeah great book, I've stolen a lot from it for my D&D sessions. Nurgle army is still happening, probably the next video you'll see a build :)
I'm actually making my own Tabletop wargame/RPG. Glad to know Knave is a simple system!
You should have a growing weapon
A rusty sword that grows as you do and you can upgrade withenchanments that can be temporary or last for the rest of the game
Ex: You find a bow with a rather strange engraving in a language nobody can understand because it is older than language itself.
I love what you inspired here
Neat! Good luck man. I’m also currently in the process of creating my own RPG system in which all of the players are sorcerers. A system that is primarily built around magic.
After watching your video, I am overflowing with inspiration!
Lovely! The spell names are awesome. 🙌
Hahah cheers mate! Great to hear from you
Miscast “waves, and lurks back into the darkness” :)
So cool to see a shout-out to Runehammer and ICRPG. Loved the video. Instant sub
I definitely hope you're planning on sharing this rpg when you've got it all set up. I really love the idea and would love to share it with my friends
Very specific question, but what font are you using for the header of the Adventurer's Sheet at 4:00???
This is just, cool sounding and I've never watched you before and now I'll check out your channel
