  • How to diagnose a misfire on a 1990 -1995 Toyota 4runner/pickup 3.0 (3VZE) and other vehicles. This is done on an engine with a distributor. This same procedure can be done on any vehicle with a distributor. When you remove the plug from the distributor for each cylinder you will either hear a RPM change or not. If you do not, then you have found your bad cylinder.

This case turned out to not be anything with the ignition but a burnt exhaust valve on the dead cylinder. I pulled the heads and repaired it.

95 4runner 3.0L v6 151k miles. I just bought this runner a couple days ago. Guy said he took it in and the diagnostic said it was the upstream o2. I found the sensor for 50 bucks and saw it was 2 bolts to replace. Bought it. Replaced it. Still not running right. We changed rotor - cap - plug wires - plugs. Cylinder 4 still misfires. Reading a lot of head gasket nightmares about this particular motor. Uncle thinks maybe a bad valve. What do you think? Are either of these expensive to fix (from a repair shop not DIY)? Half tempted to take my 4.8 vortec motor and tranny out of my rust bucket chevy and drop it in there if its going to cost more than 500 to fix.

6 is the easiest one to get to. Be happy it's not #1 like mine was. New plugs fixed everything though:)

Hey man. Got a question for you. I have myself also a 3.0. I could say it's doing the same thing like in that video. When i first got it, i changed the plugs and plug wires thinking that the rough idle my go away also. It got better. A year later, i changed the distributor cap and rotor and it remained the same. In your comment you said that you just changed the plugs.. Would i need to change the plug again for that one cylinder ?? thx

alexbaargaal if my memory serves, I had a fouled plug due to sea foam (I overdid it) and I replaced all the plugs because that's what you really should do so that they are all the same age

Thx for the reply. appreciate it. I also used seafoam at the beginning, but i use only half of it. So you would change them all AGAIN ?? I kinda have the same thing.. in my case it's number 5. Do you think that it could really be a bad fuel injector ?

alexbaargaal I am not sure. I got rid of my runner a year ago due to rear main seal leaking excessively and I got an outrageous quote to fix it so I bailed

Symptoms of a misfire generally include a rough idle, poor performance, rich smelling exhaust, and yes bad fuel mileage. The biggest one in my case, and all other engines I have felt with, is a rough idle.

I've just finish rebuilding/overhauling my engine at a shop but put together by me. I just got 91 4runner v6 running yesterday and notice I have what appears to be a similar problem. I've known this trick you demonstrated for so many years but forgot about it. Your video was a good reminder on the perfect moment for me. I thought a timing light to set the timing properly may be what I need to do but now watching this video I now think it's a slightly burned spark plug wire. Nice.

These motors need OEM Toyota genuine plug wires..with the included wire holders. trust me on this.... in the past all the other kind I tried didn't work well. The egr pipe i put slice of heater hose to act as insulation as the wires rub up against it

What are the symptoms? Lower mileage? Lower power?...

How do you fix it if it's not the plugs?

Some head work or a wore for that cylinder could be a bad connection on the dizzy there too

This should be titled "diagnose a cylinder misfire caused by ignition"
