That video is one of the finest examples of an automotive repair and tutorial video ive seen. You are professional cover all details. I learned so much .I have 98 4runner 3.4L same error code. Man I'm lucky to have the same exact problem.
Nice scanner, blue tooth and all. I just purchased my first used Vantage. Can't wait to learn how to use it. With you, Paul and Eric O. I will learn quickly. Just hooking up the meter has been tricky. I'm pretty amazed that a light can turn a driver on. I don't get that but I'm a newbie. :)
I have a 99 Tacoma 3.4l. Have a similar problem. Misfire on cylinder 4 and 6. Did a seafoam cleaning in the air intake and added to oil and gas. Runs perfect now.
Ah, the legendary 3.4! Wonderful engine. Nice view out your window. Maybe you should analyze that particular injector, if everyone says it fails. Maybe too much heat for too long, maybe just fouled and expanding metal seizes up injector. Maybe a bottle of Gum Out fuel system cleaner. Hope you’re liking the new job!
cylinder 3 injector is just below the throttle body coolant line. Mine had a very very minor coolant leak that would drip periodically my truck is a 1997. Cylinder 3 injector plug connector was very dirty. I replaced the injector and cleaned the plug as best I could. I have another injector plug ordered and will swap it out soon.
Awesome this is precisely what my 02 4 runner is doing. It randomly misses but super rarely and in my case it’s not causing a CEL. it’s happened twice now in about 1,800 miles. I’m sure it’ll get worse just hopefully not before spring when it can be down all summer if need be as I have a Mach 1 to drive.
Hi Ivan. How is that new scanner comparable to the Verus as far as scanning features?? Is it better than the autel I have seen you use on previous videos?? By the way, excellent diagnostic.
Is it possible that tiny debris caught in the injector's micro filter could create a fuel blockage? This would explain how the resistance was in spec, and perhaps also why a cold start would run just fine.
So basically you could have removed the hood from the vehicle and had a not parts required fix? Haha glad to see you using a test light and piercing wires! Make Dan proud lol. I was happy to see it finally act up and catch it on the scope. The way it works here is I will have the scope hooked to something for hours, give up, remove the scope then it will act up haha.
Yeah Eric I was about to take it for a spin to get the engine bay nice and toasty. As soon as I close the hood and put it in gear it started misfiring! There's your problem, lady! LOL
Duck for cover Ivan, the haters will string you up for "piercing or "probing" any wire, they just won't understand that sometimes it is the only way it can be done.
You were perfect on your resistance numbers but they're only perfect at about 68°. Is there a formula for resistance in relation to temp? Just completed this exact job this morning on a tundra. Nice video
As a quick test do you ever skip scoping and just switch injectors and coilpacks around to see if the misfire moves cylinder? If the misfire stays with the cylinder, then throw on a scope/ compression etc
Depends on how easy components are to get to. In his test here he literally pulled a fuse, how easy is that? The injector is buried under the intake plenum so not worth pulling it. Plus the scope catches it while running. Sometimes I will swap components on something like a four cylinder COP or the Ford 5.4 because it's so common.
Nice video and nice use of the scope in the diagnostics. Without it, you would only be guessing on that repair. I personally do not like to use only a resistance test as they can easily burn you in diagnosis, unless f course you have an obvious open in that injector. I've used the scope like this many times and always ohm the injectors to see where they are. Most of the time they are very close to spec and still faulty.
The resistance check was'nt very definitive. The scope is your only man to visually intercept the problem.Having learned some previous history about injector failure in this model also helps.Landed a nice catch there.
By the time I had the ohm meter setup it already cooled down and had continuity again! Judging by the completely missing current ramp, looks like it was an open circuit.
Great video bud, you hit all the areas needed to properly 100% percent diagnose the problem, well done. Can you tell us a a lil more about that scan tool you got there. Also how did you and Erics bike race go, any footage? Btw thanks for taking the time to make the videos i know they are a lot of work sometimes even more than the repair of the car...lol
I’m getting the same code and misfire but once the engine heats up on mine, the misfire goes away. It’s worse if I put the vehicle in reverse when still cold.
Hi Ivan Glad to see another Video. Can you give alittle more detail on the new test meter or is it to new for a report? Does it have a scope? Thanks Welcome back.
Only had the Launch for a few weeks. Kicks ass on Euro stuff, OK on other brands. For example it couldn't bidirectionally turn on the fuel pump on this truck, while the Autel and Verus can no problem. They do sell an add-on scope module for the Launch, but I already have the Verus and the PicoScope :)
The injector wire you probed could have been tested at the PCM/ECU connector. You have high dollar diag tools, so pulling the pin and adding an extender and clamp the connection could have avoided the poke. The computer is easy to get to, one bolt and pull the side kick panel (at least in the older pickups). I only hope you sealed the poked wire, if not there could be future problems with that wire. As for the comment below about disconnecting the injector from the harness, you could have done it at the PCM connector as well since the wiring doesn't splice to anything else and the only common link would be the PCM. Either way great video, would have liked a part 2 showing the basic steps of replacing the injector (just trying to get a time estimate for myself on a T100 I'm fixing).
Did you ever get the ohm reading with it heated up? Another great one buddy. Your right this is a common issue with these and you laid out the perfect way to Diag it. I love watching your videos. I learn something new every video. I'm honestly kind of shocked that ETCG agreed to let you and Eric O come to the meet up lol. Don't embarrass him to bad. Lol.

Nice to see you back, Ivan. Considering all of the required labor to replace 1, and all the same age- I would've dropped in all 6 injectors "while in there". Maybe a length of fiberglass header wrap around each would help with the heat? What a poor engine/manifold design to begin with.
If this was an old GM with shorting injectors, absolutely. But one OEM injector for this thing is almost $200! And I've only seen the #2 go bad oddly enough. We'll see if any of the other 5 originals have the same issue...hopefully not!
For what it's worth, after Vanya and I replaced the #2 injector on my '96 4Runner, it's been smooth cruising for the past two years! Don't know how to explain it, but it seems that it is always the #2 that goes.

Good video, nice information. But man I am anti wire piercing. Only because it causes so many problems due to moisture and corrosion specially if you in the northeast or close to beaches. If you have to pierce a wire then you can use dielectric grease to seal it back up. That may slow corrosion process down.

For correct injector resistence measure you HAVE TO DISCONNECT the harness and measure directly on injector pins. This is not only for injectors. It is for any device. Resistence is always measured OUT OF CIRCUIT. Never let the multimeter receive any voltage on the resistence measure part of it.
What if the injector is under the intake manifold and you can't get to the pins? Don't worry the circuit was in fact disconnected, as the ignition key was OFF :)
hi thx for the video....
Of the four personality types, I'm betting this guy is an Analytical-Analytical.
nice scan tool.
Good video, nice information. But man I am anti wire piercing. Only because it causes so many problems due to moisture and corrosion specially if you in the northeast or close to beaches. If you have to pierce a wire then you can use dielectric grease to seal it back up. That may slow corrosion process down.
Same cylinder on my 2003
gud day my good people, pls i want to know more about japanies motor
I see two issues here: not using load pro and piercing wires. Both big no no;) Good video and free to watch.
Seemed like a lot of minutes looking at squiggly lines on a screen ... probably a handy, useful tool for a pro but ...
Sounds familiar, eh? :)
