Reminds me of TMS's previous work before Sonic X, Project ARMS. The English Release by Viz Media/Ocean Group (From 2002-05) was based off of the Broadcast Version while the Italian Release (which came out in 2006) by Yamato Video was based off of the Special Edit Version on Japanese DVD. The Special Edit had some of the offmodels fixed up and the The 2nd Chapter had a different logo. The dub still had some of that left in. I remember the „We should rename this show into Eggman X“ joke from the episode where Sonic supposedly goes haywire.
There's one other thing worth mentioning. At the end of episode 47 in the original Japanese version, there was Japanese text that translates to "To be continued." No other version, not even the International version had this.
Makes sense. The international Yu-Gi-Oh footage with the famous "textless cards" actually had those cards edited straight from the studio, featuring edited artwork for the cards that 4kids couldn't possibly have had, edited artwork that would later feature in the english TCG by Konami (or even had earlier featured on english Yu-Gi-Oh videogames released before 4Kids even acquired the show). 4Kids definitely did some edits of their own, but I always knew some edits just came from the studios.
So your saying NAS were the ones who made the international Yugioh card graphics and NOT 4kids entertainment? That makes a lot of sense since the Uncut DVDs done by them and Funimation kept the Japanese card designs and the English dubs for the Yugioh movies and specials translate the cards using the official TCG information.
@@retrogamer6403 I can't say it for sure, but yeah, I think the animation studio already sent the textless cards version to 4Kids. Cards like the Exodia pieces, for example, already had an international design by konami, with the background star replaced by a spellbinding circle, used in Forbidden Memories (a dec 1999 videogame), years before 4Kids acquired the show (sep 2001). And then it shows on the 4Kids version with the spellbinding circle international artwork.
Okay, care to explain how the altered artwork coming from japan means that the entire cardalteration also came from japan? Especially considering some shots were actually missed and still have the japanese card-layout visible.
@@lpfan4491 The international card layout has been consistent throughout several company changes. And in Arc-V, the international pendulum cards actually have extended artwork to make-up for the more square-ish frame.
4Kids somehow made some good decisions like what the fuck was I suppose to react to a blank sign on top of another or the fact the paper at least has some lines to indicate that there are writings.
You missed the animation changes they did on DVD. Chris's odd face expressions from the Gamma the wanderer episode or the shining windows tuned down in episode 52.(before Amy runs after Super Sonic)
The Chris edit was expected to be fixed as he was running with a weird looking expression which oddly even though it was corrected on all versions outside the original broadcast later on the same animator who made him look like that is left intact in some of the Shadow Saga episodes, as for the windows turned down I can only assume that was due to the saying "Don't watch T.V in a dark room and instead watch it in a well lit room instead" a lot of bright areas were lowered in the Japanese version which are different to the international versions in fact too many to mention.
I still wish you made a note that in reruns of ep 16, the blank signs that sonic and Chris held were digitally removed later on. Thank you for your work!
Not only that but so was Sonic's sign for this TMS just looped the same frame of his arm lowered before he held up the sign you can see the outline on his lowered arm is missing which is after when they edited Chris holding his sign frame where they gave him a slick hair curl... what is pretty odd is as Hensama showed the original 4kids master that left that frame intact but edited the text also where it's stated it was the international version this means 2 masters exist for this episode one with the sign and one without. Also a fun fact this one sticks out to be the most recognized 4kids edit aside from the time they edited the background before the Sonic Boom scene of Sonic.
Ah Hensama skipped the hardening test edits between broadcasts ones worth remembering is episode 3 where Dr Eggman's robot Missile Wrist explodes the Japanese version had a white fade out light before the explosion while the International Japanese and other dubs had a white blink and a white flash of the explosion this wasn't unfinished animation but a custom edit to follow broadcast restrictions at the time this can also be seen in episode 4 when Chris is falling to his doom the Japanese one added a black boarder on both sides to tone down the brightness of the white and blue beams of light while the international one had it without the filter this can also be seen earlier when Sonic is jumping off the building which once again has a filter in the Japanese version only before fighting Eggman's bird robot speaking of the battle against that bird robot the yellow flashes of it's impacts against Sonic are static in the Japanese version but pierce your eye in the International Japanese and English versions, I can't remember any other main edits to the overall footage except the motion blur on Sonic and the backgrounds moving slower than usual... also great comparison of the sign changes but as thought we can't find out what Season 3 had in the Japanese version as it's using the International French masters until episode 78 that's why it was only brought up so we can see the Japanese text on the Chaotix agency door. We can see a bit of Japanese in one of the next episode previews where Vector is attacked that the sign had an arrow while later the text is removed in the actual episode.
On a side note I always wondered if the reason why the International French version was brighter having that white tint was due to NTSC to PAL colour change, this is also what the Season 3 Japanese version that existed for years that was compared in this video was used as their was no international one till 4kids released their ones that had the normal default pallet colours, speaking of the French dub it's pretty amazing how they managed to fill in some of the blank text sure it would be impossible to fill it all in but they did quite a good job adding stuff like title cards and some text in some places that was needed... one mystery that remains unsolved was were the Season 3 French international masters unfinished for what we see in the Japanese version that was created as we have no way to watch the Japanese actual version footage its hard to say what was different between episode 78 being the only one where we thankfully had an unaltered version to compare. We may never know sadly....
This just makes me hate the 4Kids dub even more! While the TMS International version has some admittedly unnecessary changes, 4Kids basically had all their work laid out for them! All they had to do was add extra English translations and adapt the script into English! That's all! And yet, they failed! It's a shame how fans of this series can make better examples of how an English Dub of Sonic X should be than a professional dubbing company.
Something to note is that 4Kids uploaded the textless Openings and Endings on their youtube channel at one point. I remember seeing the 1st ending and saw that the sign that appears in the last part of the ending is completely blank. I knew that was a TMS edit for the International version.
That's what is really sad is the International version is sadly the true version of Sonic X, if it wasn't for that one we would have never got a proper frame rate version of Sonic Drive (Japanese Opening) as it seems TMS still never made a unfiltered one and consisted of using the 2003 version that was shown way back on broadcasts, even their youtube channel is just a remux of two different masters for Sonic Drive it seems Japan really are against stuff moving faster than 1 frame as you see in the robot exploding before the name of the show appears in Japanese.
I should mention episode 78 actually had a LOT more animation revision; Vanilla's facial expression during the dinner scene was revised from discomfort to a worried smile, as-is Vector's snout movement near the end of his scene.
So they just released a bluray in the US with the original Japanese audio and official english subtitles. Based on your comparisons in this video, it appears to be the actual Japanese version and not the international version.
Think you can do a censor comparison of Digimon Adventure? I saw the original Japanese version and noticed scenes that at first was the Mandela effect on me, but it turns out they were removed from Saban's localization.

My dude, you good? Sonic X is a mixed bag but all around decent show but like how many times did you have to watch this 70 episodes long show for this project. Hats off to you mad lad.
I just discovered this series so this might be a super late comment, but I love how you use those FoxBox Sonic X promos in every video! Those are so charming and I feel like people don't remember them as much as they should. Besides that I'm really glad you made this video! I was so puzzled watching the show on Hulu in Japanese where credits were missing. Because I mainly watched this show on Hulu, I never even knew so much of this text was even there, like with Sonic talking to the Cheetah. However, there is an odd inconsistency you forgot to mention that can be easily missed. Normally on Hulu the openings/endings are clean. But, if you watch the first few episodes of the Metarex saga in Japanese, there's actually a proper English credits sequence created for the international version! I've only seen a couple of these videos so far though so if you've mentioned it previously, my bad.
For all Europe and Oceania countries except France and Italy, a new intro was created when Sonic X was broadcasted on Jetix. But in Italy they also had a new intro for Sonic X.
It's in the french DVD version, all episodes have the 3rd ending except episodes 1 to 13 and 15 to 26 (episode 14 also has the ending 3). Unfortunately it only plays from the chorus (and it's an instrumental version)
I once found a version of the final scene(s) of the final episode on UA-cam where the characters were all captioned with their names, which revealed who the seedling was supposed to be! Where did that version come from? I remember an earlier episode in that same season where a strange blank rectangle appeared, as if it was supposed to contain text conveying someone's thoughts, but I couldn't find a copy where it was filled in with anything. And there was no Japanese broadcast of that season to check how it was "supposed" to be...
The version of the final scene you saw was the Web-Rip of episode 78 being the only one that was deemed not worth changing for a higher quality oversaturated version to be shown like the other episodes were, and yeah their is a lot of blank text in Season 3 that we may never know what was placed there due to the fact at the time their was no high quality version made for the 3rd season but to be honest seeing the unchanged episode 78 makes me wonder why they would go for washed out PAL masters when they are not aware of how much is removed.
While 4Kids got lot of things wrong, but i'll do admit that managed make pretty banger theme songs back in the day (shame that same cannot exactly be said about the actual music scores in the actual episodes, usually being either too bland or overly dramatic) Themes like the original Pokémon theme, TMNT 2003 themes (Seasons 1-5 and BttS, Fast Forward f*ckin' sucks period) and in some level Sonic X US theme. Still rememberable after 25+ years or so.
Sorry one thing, but if TMS has already made a localization ready version available, why the fuck 4Kids forced the whole west to take that crap. I'm proud of France who said no, in their version Sonic declares to Amy that he loves her. However, I do not know why France has had the opportunity to do so, I know that it is a very liberal country and without prejudice.
@@CosmicSponge2004 I'm surprised there was a lot more scenes that where just cut out bc of time reasons I'm assuming. They should've made the dub for CN.

Just for clarification, does this mean the Sonic X that's on Hulu has the full set of original episodes as they were shown in Japanese? Give or take a few text scrubs which I can live without. Or are there still removed and edited scenes and whatnot like Molly "going away"? I loved this show as a kid, but I haven't done anything Sonic related in many years and I'd be interested to rewatch the show in its original form
@@LizardOfOz69 I think some of the best decisions 4Kids made were censoring Rouge's cleavage, and making Tails and Cosmo normal friends instead of love interests. What do you think of those?
@@robertlesley9112 Tails and Cosmo were meant to be. I hate that change as well as every other change regarding censorship of love, death, or anything else that is a big deal.
@@RiddleSnowcraft There were no proper companychanges tho. The dub has always been made by the same team.
@@dblibruary Cream was sleeping with Amy that night when Super Sonic suddenly appeared. Amy didn't want to wake her up I guess or left the lights up.
For episode 16:
TMS' UA-cam upload of its English dub removed the signs completely.
I have most if the not the whole original Jetix Metarex Saga on VHS.
Upload it!!
@@Hensama How ? I'm not familiar with VHS conversion.
E-77 with a picture of Mr.Stewart. That made me laugh, it makes no sense XD
They probably meant to put lucky on it but maybe they were in a hurry for a deadline and just slapped stewart's face with a number on it haha
probably a placeholder while they looked for an official render or a screenshot of the show which could be used as an alternative.
Dude... Please use some basic punctuation, that was a complete mess and really hard to read...
*unprofessional dubbing company
That's what all dubs should be. Not unnecessary censors.
Something to note is that 4Kids uploaded the textless Openings and Endings on their youtube channel at one point. I remember seeing the 1st ending and saw that the sign that appears in the last part of the ending is completely blank. I knew that was a TMS edit for the International version.
Also you forgot to notice the pot that was holding Cosmo in the last episode, cause that was updated as well.
@@VSVoidSpartan a video about updating all the animation would be unique too
That's what is really sad is the International version is sadly the true version of Sonic X, if it wasn't for that one we would have never got a proper frame rate version of Sonic Drive (Japanese Opening) as it seems TMS still never made a unfiltered one and consisted of using the 2003 version that was shown way back on broadcasts, even their youtube channel is just a remux of two different masters for Sonic Drive it seems Japan really are against stuff moving faster than 1 frame as you see in the robot exploding before the name of the show appears in Japanese.
@@dblibruary apparently the discotek Blu ray sub release will hopefully fix that
@@bluebaron6858 Indeed it will be great to have the definitive of all the variants of the shows existence upscaled to SD HD on Blu-ray ^^
I should mention episode 78 actually had a LOT more animation revision; Vanilla's facial expression during the dinner scene was revised from discomfort to a worried smile, as-is Vector's snout movement near the end of his scene.
That's suck that americains couldn't hear Live and Learn in their version of this famous moment.
7:11 I’m french and I was confused that there was a blank paper on there, I thought it was to hide the fact that the dvd player was stolen
Ah now I remember the international version
So they just released a bluray in the US with the original Japanese audio and official english subtitles. Based on your comparisons in this video, it appears to be the actual Japanese version and not the international version.
Yes, the people releasing it already said that months ago...
Think you can do a censor comparison of Digimon Adventure? I saw the original Japanese version and noticed scenes that at first was the Mandela effect on me, but it turns out they were removed from Saban's localization.
I guess 4kids wasn’t as bad as we once thought.
Then again, “not as bad” doesn’t mean “not bad”
Yeah, some of the changes they made were actually better then the International/French version.

Love these videos.
according to the sonic wiki, theirs a version of season 3 that has t.o.p as its outro, but I haven't found that one anywhere.
Look up Sonic X Ending 3 TOP and you'll find it
It's in the french DVD version, all episodes have the 3rd ending except episodes 1 to 13 and 15 to 26 (episode 14 also has the ending 3). Unfortunately it only plays from the chorus (and it's an instrumental version)
In Season 3 there’s Hikaru Michi instead of T.O.P.
This is high level work and it was super interesting to me. Great work!
The version of the final scene you saw was the Web-Rip of episode 78 being the only one that was deemed not worth changing for a higher quality oversaturated version to be shown like the other episodes were, and yeah their is a lot of blank text in Season 3 that we may never know what was placed there due to the fact at the time their was no high quality version made for the 3rd season but to be honest seeing the unchanged episode 78 makes me wonder why they would go for washed out PAL masters when they are not aware of how much is removed.
that furry purple creature looks looks like the blue furry aliens from the jetsons movie
While 4Kids got lot of things wrong, but i'll do admit that managed make pretty banger theme songs back in the day (shame that same cannot exactly be said about the actual music scores in the actual episodes, usually being either too bland or overly dramatic)
Themes like the original Pokémon theme, TMNT 2003 themes (Seasons 1-5 and BttS, Fast Forward f*ckin' sucks period) and in some level Sonic X US theme. Still rememberable after 25+ years or so.
5:00 This is actually a bit of a fourth-wall joke: Chris's sign says "Good kids won't try this at home!" and Sonic's says "What, I'm not a good kid?"
Man, this or State of Play? I wonder what to choose....................
*THIS, no doubt*
Well, this is awkward.
The video skipped out a bit in the first chaotix episode.
Around 55% of it is 4Kids being stupid. The rest is USA TV Standards for TV-Y7 & Fox

Or are there still removed and edited scenes and whatnot like Molly "going away"? I loved this show as a kid, but I haven't done anything Sonic related in many years and I'd be interested to rewatch the show in its original form
Hulu has no cuts whatsoever aside from text removal but that’s about it
For Sonic X, which do you think are best edits/decisions 4Kids made, and why?
Every time they added stuff that TMS refused to change accordingly, like pictures instead of nothing.
As for things I like about the 4Kids version, I like certain dialogue changes that make things funnier/better-sounding.
An example of this is what Eggman said to Dark Sonic in Black Narcissus’s base.
Sub: “Sonic, don’t disappoint me. I’ll pretend I didn’t see anything. Go disappear into the smoke.“
Dub: “Listen, Sonic; I’m really disappointed in you. From now on be careful not to let your temper get out of control, or one of these days you may find you’re always angry, just like another hedgehog we know.”
The worst "edits" is them removing 4th wall moments.

So as many noticed if stuff looked brighter in the final versions would you call the broadcast and DVD releases unfinished?

God dammit. Despite being french I'd never seen the french version of Sonic X and.... sounds like it's the SAME VOICE ACTORS AGAIN.
I swear to god, every single 2010s or older japanese-animated show dubbed in french has the same voice actors... it's especially noticeable with the main characters. And from that few lines I heard here, it sounds to me like it's the same guy again. Okay I like his voice, and the group of VAs I'm thinking of are great actors, but god damn it, you don't need to hire them for EVERY SHOW.
Do you have any info on the insert songs in the Japanese version? I swear, there were a bunch of songs I distinctly remember being used in the Japanese version in certain scenes, but when I rewatched some of them on Hulu, the songs were gone, usually replaced with a variation of The Shining Road. Is that an international thing? Also, great series. Loved these things!

RCS has retired anyway, but I agree he wouldn’t be a good fit.
