Your email was from 'no reply' so I am answering here: Hello ! The 'midi thru' issue that prevented me from hearing the mini grand while playing my controller was in Protools in one of the drop down menus. I'm not near my computer now but it should be easy for you to find. It says 'midi thru' - and when checked off I finally could hear the virtual instrument on the 'Instrument Track' in real time as I played my controller. For some reason this little detail was not mentioned in any of my 3 Protools books. As soon as I UNcheck it, all sound stops coming through as I play the controller. Ok. Thank you again for your previous help. It did help me get the issue resolved in part because there were things in your video and previous email answers that were also helpful. Ok thx! Kurt

Does anyone know how to fix this? When I play something in kontakt it works fine but then after 30 seconds my playing dosent pick up anymore but then it starts working again after a minute. Please help
Hi. I'm a newby with Pro Tools First. This was a great tutorial for using a Midi kbd, but is there a video on how to play directly into my DAW using my performing kbd? Including how to set the I/O?
Sorry for the late reply. Might need more information before I can help. When you refer to your "performing keyboard", do you mean a stage piano of some kind? If so, all the information on USB or Midi cables is the same. In regards to I/O within Pro Tools, it should take care of itself if you set up the tracks and plugins up as shown in the video.
Thanks for the tutorial. I am using the free version called Pro Tools First. For inputs, I do not have grand piano. I just have Xpand!2 and set it to Grand Piano inside the XPand!2 settings window. Then, I connected my Yamaha CP88 electric keyboard. I can hear computer sounds through my keyboard headset. I clicked the red recording button on both the track and the overall project, but when I started playing notes on my keyboard they did not register in Pro Tools First. Any idea what I did wrong?
Do you have a video about how to use instruments in the Air Creative Collection? Would love to see tutorials on creating guitar, bass, and drum tracks using Air Creative.
Hi, I’ve followed your tutorial step by step, but my midi kb still have no sound in the pro tools first. I want to know is my sound card’s problem?(I use the built-in sound card) or is something have to set up, thx.
Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Have you got the issue fixed yet? What is the brand/model of your MIDI keyboard, and are you using a recording interface of some kind or just the built in sound card?
Great vid as you have left no one behind. However I for SOME reason can’t get the keyboard to play the virtual instruments in pro tools 11. It records midi data from the motif xs8 and I can get that data to play the mini grand virtual instrument. However I can’t actually play my keyboard and make the mini grand make sound. I did not put a driver in the computer. However the fact that it records midi data and will play back my keyboard or mini grand makes me believe I don’t need to download a driver. Am I correct? Any idea? I have books and am going around in circles. Thank you. Your vid was very good.
OK, I recently came across a similar problem. Try going to Setup/Midi/Midi Input Devices. Then make sure your input (The Motif, or maybe MIDI input 1?) is selected.
Ok thank you! I’ll try in the A.M. as my brain is fried at the moment. Lol. So appreciate the speedy reply. I found your video to be one of the very best in that it just gave me great facts and didn’t assume I knew anything. That’s what a good teacher does. Ok I’ll let you know what happens.
👋 Hi. I had that box checked off. No change. I tried another keyboard same thing. Both keyboards recorded midi data and protools 11 digi 002 would engage mini grand on playback. Mouse engages mini grand. No notes depressed or sound when playing from keyboard. However any midi data entered can engage the mini grand after the fact. I did not install drivers. However it is recording data so I would think it’s not a driver issue. I am using standard midi cables. Keyboard to digi 002 to firewire to mac 10.10. I can’t expect you to solve this from where you sit. I appreciate all your help. I AM stuck so if you think of anything I’ll try it! Thx
@@kurtwieting Wow, that's puzzling. You're right that it's a bit hard for me to solve without being in front of your computer. But it sounds to me like the keyboard and MIDI signals are fine, it's most likely an interface/driver issue, or a Pro Tools setting. Or, could it be related to input monitoring?
Thank you . If you might explain interface/driver issue definition? Thank you. The other references I understood. ( are you suggesting i May to install a driver? I did look and apparently the motif is universally accepted w/ protools with an 002 using standard midi cables. Ok thank you . I won’t keep asking questions. Eventually I’ll find the answer and when I do I’ll let you know what rock I found tha magic key under ....🤪
Thank you for this. One question I have is, with everything Xpand offers are the keyboards that do a lot less really worth opening? For example the first grand piano sound and the organ sound. Are they a lot more realistic than the ones on Xpand?
I think I just chose those instruments cause they are so simple and user friendly. Less searching through menus to get straight to useable sounds. Xpand can be a bit overwhelming at first but there's heaps of great stuff in there for sure.
Hi Joe, not really, you need something that you can plug a mic into. Most computers do have a built in microphone input but it tends to be low quality. You'd need a special adapter to convert an XLR microphone connector to the tiny one on your computer too. It's "possible" but not ideal. Even a cheap audio interface is better than using the computer audio connections.
Can I record from piano to pro tools Directly without any instruments? Cuz the instruments change the piano sound when I use them. I want it to be the same sound that came out from my piano. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP
Of course you can. This means you want to record AUDIO, not Midi. This video is about a completely different subject. Connect your Keyboard to your recording interface using an audio cable (like a guitar lead). In Pro Tools, create a blank audio track, make sure the input of that track is set to the same input on your audio interface. Then you can start recording.
Excuse me, how do you have so many instruments to choose from? I only have Click II and Xpand!2 in mine. It's so frustrating, I spent all this money, I just want to play and record!! Thanks, great video too man, this is my first, but won't be my last, cuz I'm a subscriber now. Holla!
The reason he has more instrument plugins is that he likely bought them or got them in some sort of bundle. Xpand!2 and Click II are default instrument plugins that come with pro tools but the others are not.
Hi! I wonder if you could help me with a little problem i have with pro tools. After i have recorded instrument track with my keyboard, and i want to cut the track little bit from the beginning, ( to take away the quiet part) the sound of my song is changing almost every time. The playing sounds like, that i havent used the pedal at all. All the notes ends like in a wall, and it doesn´t sound natural.. Before i cut part of the song it sounds normal.. And the same thing happens sometimes when i push with the mouse somewhere on the track.. Can you help me? Thanks! I have a pro tools first..
This is a tricky problem to explain in text. Midi records everything coming from your keyboard, not just notes but also pedal movements. It's possible that you had your sustain pedal pressed down several bars before you started playing. Therefore, when you cut the beginning of your track you inadvertently removed that pedal control. You can put it back in with the mouse, but you'll have to set the track view to "controller/sustain", then you'll be able to see and edit the sustain pedal data. It's usually either on (128) or off (0). I hope that helps, or at least points you in the right direction so you know what to look for.
@@HighRoadMusician Thank you very much for your answer. It was very helpful, and now I can change the pedal how I want! :) Do you know if there is in pro tools first some button, if I want to cancel something what I have edited? Like repeal? I haven't found yet.. One more thing: When I first time started to record with my keyboard in pro tools first, something weird happened to the program..All the text in the program came much smaller, and I don't see the whole text in the up menu, just part of it.. And it still looks the same. It has also started to work little badly sometimes.. For example sometimes it doesn't open the project or save it. Do you know if there is anything I could do for that? Thank you for the answers! :)
> Do you know if there is in pro tools first some button, if I want to cancel something what I have edited? Like repeal? Window/Undo History. Apart from that just the usual Undo command or Ctrl + Z. As far as font size goes, no I've never heard of that. Font size in Pro Tools usually matches your Windows text settings. If you want the font to be bigger you may need to change your screen resolution in Windows. Hope that helps!
Um... I don't know? If you're referring to my screen capture footage I'm using OBS software with my screen at 1680 x 1050, my camera is recording in Full HD 1920×1080 and then I edit and output the whole thing to Full HD as well. Does that help?
When I go to the instruments it only gives me two options which are “Ableton Live(mono)” and “Click II (mono)” and neither will let me play it. Am I missing something?
First of all, make sure you've created the right kind of track, an instrument track not an audio track. If that still doesn't work you may need to log into your Avid account and download the extra instrument plugins which should have come free with Pro Tools.
Thank you for your reply via email. I did try the buffer size solution previously. I even maxed out buffer size ( and avoided latency by plugging headphones directly into keyboard)- and still ended up with the same result. I also always have the CPU usage meters on my desktop during sessions. I'll try allocating this second keyboard I'm speaking of ( I swap two back and forth) in its own MIDI STUDIO setup vs having two keyboards going into the same midi ins of my 002. ( virtually of course - not possible in reality) Sometimes I find trying things that would seemingly make no sense - sometime work. I DID NOT have this problem before utilizing this second keyboard. However, it would not seem to be the keyboard itself, as it plays beautifully when in pause - set to record mode- ( so I can hear mini grand). It's curious - I appreciate your input. ( pun?) I realize you are not in front of my setup - so there's not much that can be done from where you sit. If you think of anything else - great- but i am aware this comments section is not a blog/ forum ... so you don't need that(!) Ok ! Looking forward to your next video.
I've downloaded and installed Xpandi2 and MiniGrand piano but when I go to instrument track to access the plug ins I've installed i can't seem to access them they aren't there. please help
If you can see Xpand!2 in your plugin list then yes, it should work as shown in my video. Just follow the steps and make sure you've set it up correctly. New/Instrument Track, add Xpand!2 plugin and away you go. If that doesn't work then check the description for a link to my other video "Midi Keyboard Not Working?"
I have connected the midi.cable to roland drums...why am I not getting sounds or any midi reading on the tracks when i press record? I have the virtual drum already selected.
Prob. Solved. It apparently is very important to open up a midi device’s own dedicated MIDI STUDIO set up. Once I did that for my second keyboard, it all worked perfectly. Apparently plugging two midi cables ,even virtually into the same virtual input causes confusion.
I have done exactly what has happened here and it works but after a few seconds it holds whatever note I was playing then freezes and then I can play again I have no clue how to fix it
actually got same plug in up, came here to find out how to connect my keys! had it record enabled, but nothing? edit: I have in and out midis but plugged in wrong 😆😆😆 say no to drugs kids! thanks!
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME,,,,,,, I just got a NORD stage keyboard and the sounds are way better than the Instrument Sounds in Pro Tools. I s there any way I can get the same sounds from my own keyboard?
I don't know if Nord have software instruments available to use in DAWs like Pro Tools. But if they do, that would be the easiest way to get your Nord Sounds in Pro Tools. However, if you just want to use the your local Nord Sounds with Pro Tools, then you'll need to use a mixture of Midi and Audio cables. 1) Connect the Midi inputs and outputs from your computer your Nord. (Or if you're using a USB connection, that will be taken care of). 2) Connect the Audio Output (Line out) from your Nord to the Audio Ins on your Recording Interface. 3) Set up a Midi track in Pro Tools which will send MIDI information to your Nord. Make sure whatever channel you choose is matched on the Nord. For instance, if you have a synth sound on the Nord you want to use, and it's on Midi channel 2. Make sure the MIDI track in Pro Tools is "sending" to MIDI channel 2. 4) Set up an audio track in Pro Tools for the Nord sounds to come back "in". 5) Set up your monitoring so that when you play or program a note on your MIDI track, it goes out to the Nord, back in to the audio track and you can hear it in real time. You've now created a Midi send/Audio return. There are a lot of links in the chain where things can go wrong, so expect to do some problem solving. It's likely that you'll think you've got it set up right but you still can't "hear anything" because of one step that's incorrect. But
My keyboard already has sounds in it... It isn't silent when connected to the daw like yours.... So will that make a problem in the process u showed to record it?
Hi Siddhanth, the sounds in your keyboard are referred to as "Local MIDI". You can still use your keyboard as shown in my video, but only if you turn Local MIDI off, or turn the volume down to zero on your keyboard speakers. My video is about using your keyboard to control sounds within Pro Tools. So if you don't turn your keyboard speakers down/off then you'll be hearing two sounds at once, your keyboard AND Pro Tools at the same time.
Any idea why the mini grand and controller work flawlessly in pause prior to recording but once it's recording I get bizarre phrasing , squished notes, and pedal snafus. This is apparent in real time. As well as it is recorded. Prior in pause / it's perfect
My first instinct is that record mode uses more CPU/RAM resources than when paused so you could be running out of computer power. I'm not in front of Pro Tools right now but I think if you go to Windows/System Resources or System Meter (I think?) it will show you CPU and Hard Disk meters. If CPU is maxed out you may need to adjust some buffer/playback settings elsewhere. Try that and see what happens first.
If your keyboard only has audio output, then it won't work. You need a MIDI output of some kind (USB or 5 pin plug) to control the plugins in pro tools. However, if you just want to record your keyboard directly (not MIDI), then you can just use a guitar lead and record it to an audio track.
@@mrfdiaz2032 OK. So if understand what you're saying, then you've got a special Midi interface cable that has USB on one end and two 5 pin MIDI plugs on the other. One plug is IN, and the other is OUT. But you're saying that you're keyboard only has an "out" so you're not sure what to do with the unused plug? Just leave it unplugged. You don't need MIDI going back into your keyboard, you just need it going FROM your keyboard into the computer. If that's your setup, then there shouldn't be a problem. Everything should work as shown in the video. If not, check the description for a link to a troubleshooting video called "Midi Keyboard not working?". Could just be a few settings you need to change.
Windows detects my Yamaha p45 as a “Yamaha usb MIDI device” yet to the best of my ability I can’t get pro tools to detect it. I’ve tried plugging it in to many different USB ports on my computer, I’ve tried two different cables, nothing works. Any suggestions?
When I click the red square button to start recording with my keyboard I don't get sound in pro tools. My audio interface is AudioBox USB 96. I'm depressed even though I know that it is something simple to solve I don't know about it
In the description of this video, you'll find a link to a video I made called "Midi Keyboard Not Working?". Try that first and let me know if it doesn't work.

I'm from melb I noticed your Aussie accent.
Hi Shaarz, I'm finding your description a little hard to follow. But if you're using a Roland EM15 keyboard, then you'll need a Midi to USB adapter cable like this: www.jaycar.com.au/usb-midi-interface/p/XC4934 Pro Tools can accept audio from the Scarlett and Midi from the cable at the same time.
@@Acujeremy Unfortunately I don't have a video on that subject specifically. The Drum Programing video is very close though. You would just load up a bass/keyboard instrument plugin instead of a drum plugin, and then insert notes into the piano roll editor in the same way. But instead of hearing drums, you'll be hearing bass/keyboard. Of course, you need to know how bass and keyboard parts work first. There's an assumed level of musical knowledge there.
@@HighRoadMusician I can read music and do have music knowledge. Is there a way to do something like enter notes on a stave for specific instruments like a bass or organ, and then have it play the instruments digitally?
Oh great, yes, ProbTools has a staff editor but honestly when it comes to MIDI the piano roll (grid) editor is the most intuitive. Either way, you can just punch the notes in with a mouse and play them back with any instrument sound you choose yes.

Thanks, short and sweet is always best right?
Thank you!! Super helpful!
You're most welcome Will. Glad you're getting a lot out of it :-)
Thanks for the tutorial.
I haven't done any yet but that's a good idea. Any particular instruments you're interested in?
Hi again, I would certainly be interested in doing videos on this, which instruments are you most interested in?
not sure how you can press the record on the track, considering it says you need an input and output assigned.
It sounds like you may have created the wrong kind of track. Did you create an instrument track or an audio track?
Really helpful video
Hi, I’ve followed your tutorial step by step, but my midi kb still have no sound in the pro tools first. I want to know is my sound card’s problem?(I use the built-in sound card) or is something have to set up, thx.
Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Have you got the issue fixed yet? What is the brand/model of your MIDI keyboard, and are you using a recording interface of some kind or just the built in sound card?
@@HighRoadMusician I can do it with Ableton live. My MIDI keyboard is Arturia mini lab II, and I just have the built in sound card.
Thank you so much!
Eventually I’ll find the answer and when I do I’ll let you know what rock I found tha magic key under ....🤪
thanks for the video!
Great video, thanks. Is there a way of recording vocals without an interface hardware?
Hi Joe, not really, you need something that you can plug a mic into. Most computers do have a built in microphone input but it tends to be low quality. You'd need a special adapter to convert an XLR microphone connector to the tiny one on your computer too. It's "possible" but not ideal.
Even a cheap audio interface is better than using the computer audio connections.
@@HighRoadMusician Thanks for the info.
You can sing into your phone’s voice memo app (hold a pop filter up to your phone) and then send that audio file to your computer
Hi, if you paid for Pro Tools then you should be elligible for free virtual instruments. Check the Pro Tools website for available downloads.

Thank you very much for your answer.

Thank you for the answer! It was very helpful. :)
Hey, why is your graphic quality much better than mine?
Um... I don't know? If you're referring to my screen capture footage I'm using OBS software with my screen at 1680 x 1050, my camera is recording in Full HD 1920×1080 and then I edit and output the whole thing to Full HD as well. Does that help?
Genius! Thank U!
Damn you a good person :D
When I go to the instruments it only gives me two options which are “Ableton Live(mono)” and “Click II (mono)” and neither will let me play it. Am I missing something?
First of all, make sure you've created the right kind of track, an instrument track not an audio track. If that still doesn't work you may need to log into your Avid account and download the extra instrument plugins which should have come free with Pro Tools.
@@HighRoadMusician I am having the same problem. I have downloaded the linked plugins but there are no instruments
arturia doesn't automatically insert the downloaded plugins to Protools. How do they connect?
Thank you for your reply via email. I did try the buffer size solution previously. I even maxed out buffer size ( and avoided latency by plugging headphones directly into keyboard)- and still ended up with the same result. I also always have the CPU usage meters on my desktop during sessions.
I'll try allocating this second keyboard I'm speaking of ( I swap two back and forth) in its own MIDI STUDIO setup vs having two keyboards going into the same midi ins of my 002. ( virtually of course - not possible in reality)
Sometimes I find trying things that would seemingly make no sense - sometime work.
If you think of anything else - great- but i am aware this comments section is not a blog/ forum ... so you don't need that(!)
Ok ! Looking forward to your next video.
I've downloaded and installed Xpandi2 and MiniGrand piano but when I go to instrument track to access the plug ins I've installed i can't seem to access them they aren't there. please help
This might help? www.gearslutz.com/board/avid-pro-tools/865925-virtual-instruments-not-showing-up.html
can i do that without a subscription? All I can see from instrument of input is Xpand!2. and it doesn't work at all.
@@HighRoadMusician Thank you for the recommendation but it seems like I've watched it before. Is there any other problems that you could think of?

I have connected the midi.cable to roland drums...why am I not getting sounds or any midi reading on the tracks when i press record? I have the virtual drum already selected.
In the description you should find a link to a video called "Midi Keyboard not working?". Try that first and see if it helps.
Prob. Solved. It apparently is very important to open up a midi device’s own dedicated MIDI STUDIO set up. Once I did that for my second keyboard, it all worked perfectly. Apparently plugging two midi cables ,even virtually into the same virtual input causes confusion.
Awesome news! Glad you got it figured out. Sounds like a pretty complex set up you've got there.
I have done exactly what has happened here and it works but after a few seconds it holds whatever note I was playing then freezes and then I can play again I have no clue how to fix it
actually got same plug in up, came here to find out how to connect my keys! had it record enabled, but nothing?
edit: I have in and out midis but plugged in wrong 😆😆😆

Or if i try the same way of yours it'll work as per the sounds i select in pro tools
@@HighRoadMusician Thank you very much sir! It feels great to get a reply from you!
Mi piano just has an OUT plug , how can I make it work then?
If your keyboard only has audio output, then it won't work. You need a MIDI output of some kind (USB or 5 pin plug) to control the plugins in pro tools.
However, if you just want to record your keyboard directly (not MIDI), then you can just use a guitar lead and record it to an audio track.
@@HighRoadMusician I meant an OUT midi plug , (5 ping plug) but that left me with one midi cable hanging out( I got the out and in MIDI usb cable)
@@HighRoadMusician alright thank you :)

Hi Shaarz, I'm finding your description a little hard to follow. But if you're using a Roland EM15 keyboard, then you'll need a Midi to USB adapter cable like this: www.jaycar.com.au/usb-midi-interface/p/XC4934
Pro Tools can accept audio from the Scarlett and Midi from the cable at the same time.

How can one add keyboard tracks without using any keyboard?
You'd have to enter every note with the mouse. Here's an example of how to do drum programming with a mouse: ua-cam.com/video/PUyR9FhMB6w/v-deo.html
@@HighRoadMusician Hey thanks for that. But I was wondering about adding keyboard and bass sounds with the mouse.
Either way, you can just punch the notes in with a mouse and play them back with any instrument sound you choose yes.
once a year I come here and afterwards my I can use my keyboard in protools
