I always assumed Daniels' uniform with all the piping was some sort of functional garment specifically for time travel. Like there is tech in the uniform that stabilizes the (insert technobabble here), which is why it looks so funky.
They shouldn't even be wearing cloth at this point in the future, uniforms should be made out of programmable matter, or nanites, or some kind of futuristic material that is technological at its base, and allows for things like personal shields, and other things, like the technology should be built into the uniform and able to do all kinds of futuristic stuff. That has always been my problem with costumes in Star Trek, they should have technology built into it, and by this time in the 32nd/33rd century, it should be an entirely different kind of material period.

I have a hypothesis about the reason Starfleet changes uniforms so often. I think its so that if something goes wrong and a temporal agent loses track of where they are in the timeline, they can ascertain the time period at a glance.
That's some good head canon. I imagine the temporal division infiltrating Starfleet's Administrative Division over and over throughout the years to advocate for new uniforms all while trying to not mess up the overall timeline. There's a decent workplace comedy in there somewhere.
So I guess the Temp agent never did his homework or the Temp war was just a really long and bad meeting between Federation officers with different officer uniforms and they lost the track of time. I guess Bajor had a lasting influence on Starfleet. That admiral's uniform kind of reminds me of the pre-Federation Bajoran uniforms. Even the commbadge harkens back to Bajoran.

And another note, what is with these designers and their fear of division colours? I know blue has always been the Federation colour, but can we please diversify Discovery's pallet to include something other than blue and grey?
The middle reminds me so much of the uniforms used for the first 6 episodes of Crusade before the reshoots took place which replaced them with the black uniforms.
There are background characters in the promo in a blue or grey uniform with a dark blue stripe like the one on the right. There was also another walking with a golden yellow uniform beside them. So they do have other colored uniforms and different color stripes.
Remember that Sena Tal was a Trill and the Trill (according to episode S3E4) are not part of Star Fleet. It may be that Admiral Tal was an ambassador to Earth.
Five pips is a Fleet Admiral and in some Star Trek episodes/movies the head of Star Fleet. In the Kelvin timeline movie into the Darkness, Admiral Marcus has 5 insignias on each of his labels. He is the head of Star Fleet.

Senna Tal was an Admiral. Vance is the CnC. There is more than one rank within the Admiralty; if there wasn't it wouldn't be a chain of command, it would be a shelf. These represent just two of those ranks, and we also know that Admirals have historically had some flexibility in exactly what their uniform looks like from early TNG (I thiink we see four different admiral uniforms in the first few seasons). I love the Bajoran look to the admiralty uniforms, which also shows a little in Willa's and the Hologram uniforms (is Willa a sentient hologram? Like the Doctor? The Doctor's PHP came from a previous century, so...).
I like the left uniform in regards to a security division but would look better with shipboard red, blue and gold where the darkest parts are at the top. Given the state of the galaxy the security division could (theoretically) be given a more independent division prominence!
Another good video guys, I like the new uniforms and lack of colour more military looking. Like the Uniforms from later DS9 series onwards through the TNG films. Grey shoulders and rest black. Due to Starfleet being in dark times during the Dominion war etc. Then reintroduce more colour in the uniforms in less dark times 🖖

No one said he was retired, he was still doing Starfleet things 12 years ago,...and died a year ago trying to leave. No one said retired so i doubt it. Older uniform maybe...but that would be odd.
In the sneak peak, Saru says that the Federation and Starfleet are now truly two separate entities. So I wouldn't be surprised if the uniform from the left (grey and black) is for the Federation, maybe civil security, while the two others are Starfleet uniforms. Or maybe there are different unforms for officers and rank-and-file (or high ranking officers and lower officers). We have seen that before in the movies (Wrath and so on), but also in TNG, when they transitionned between the Season 1-2 uniform and the Season 3 uniform. The rank-and-file were wearing the season 1 uniform while the main characters were wearing the new uniforms. But I am more in favor of the first hypothesis.
Love Georgiou's hairstyle 🥰 One nice thing about Season 3 is at least I'm interested in seeing the next episode. There also is a art book coming out that I already pre-order -- a lot to dislike in Discovery, but unlike Picard it is (increasingly) watchable with some interesting ideas and a lot of money being spent (not always wisely or necessary) on production. 😐
Over thinking it and then forgetting something. Star fleet and the federation are not in communication with each other. Different uniforms shouldn't be an issue at this point.
The problem with these uniforms is that they look more like costumes, rather than functional military uniforms. The Admiral looks like he's wearing one of those little jackets that Elizabeth Bennett and her sisters wore over their regency-era dresses in Pride and Prejudice.
I'm not really feeling the new style of uniforms for 3189... What I'm looking forward to is seeing HQ being a space station and not on a planet and the Starfleet ships, of which two have been seen in the sneak.

My issue basically comes down to...these uniforms actually look TOO Starfleet. Let me tell you what I mean: This is 900 years later!! 800 years after TNG/Picard! Do you realize how much time that is? Is there any military uniform or clothing of any sort worn TODAY which even remotely RESEMBLES the uniforms and clothing of 900 hundred years ago? 900 years ago was the year 1120 AD! The King of England was Henry the 1st! Go take a look at what he was wearing, what his soldiers were wearing. The iconography and so on. Would they still be using the Starfleet delta after 900 years? I would be astonished if they did. I had the same criticisms when, on "Voyager," we met the crew of the USS Relativity--from the 29th century--500 years later! (500 years ago was 1520; the King of England was the infamous Henry VIII.) And yet, the Relatively crew wore uniforms which were cut like TNG-era uniforms made out of a slightly different material and color, as they operated touchscreen LCARS which looked like the exact same touchscreen technology they had on Voyager. There was barely any difference stylistically or technologically. That struck me as unrealistic back then and strikes me as unrealistic now. Furthermore, why are they (the Discovery crew) shocked and stunned that the Federation has essentially fallen?--after 1000 years!!!?? It's astonishing that ANY of it still exists. These are the things which are striking me as a disconnect.
First impressions on the new Starfleet uniforms seen in the Discovery trailer is that they are all waaaay too gray. But that being said, it's not bad. And I think this might be hinting that Starfleet isn't as good as it used to be. I think it's going to be a far more nebulous organization. Sort of a desperate times call for desperate measures attitude that will be in play and that Discovery will have to contend with. Now on the pic that you guys show at the beginning, I think the uniform on the left looks like an homage to the really form fitting spandexy suits from TNG seasons 1 - 2. I do like the Admiral's uniform. But again, I just have an issue with all the gray. The uniform on the right looks more like the Picard uniforms... it's just that it again has a lot of grays and some of the lines are way too bold. I also don't like the broken delta. They need to stop with that and go back to the solid delta.
I think 5 pipes with two lines would definitely be a Fleet Admiral's rank. I think that the most military look of the Starfleet uniform may be a clue to what the state of Starfleet is....exploration may not be the primary goal of Starfleet in 3189.
Looking at The Thumbnail the First Thing I Thought was it's Bajoran, Even the Insignia Pin Looked Bajoran, It doesn't look like Starfleet at all, It's Very Bland, and Dull, It Looks also like Uniforms From Stargate Atlantis.
White/Grey Looks like the standard duty uniform, with Colour stripe down right hand side to signify division and Triangle Rank Pips on Left and Right of collar. - Can't see if this is the case on the new uniforms at starfleet HQ. White/Black we see in the interview scene are probable Starfleet security. Perhaps Section 31, although to be honest I'm getting sick of them so I hope not. There's a somewhat Russian / Babylon 5 quality to the uniforms. They're different, which I like. I think I can get used to them
I'm a little surprised that the uniforms have some semblance to ones from 900 years ago. Heck, I'm surprised that clothing in general hasn't changed much in the following centuries.
Captain Foley is correct. Chubby guy lile me wouldn't look good. the Bollero jacket works best with slim bodies. It may work for some chubby depending if the use a dark tone for the underneath garmets. To balance it out.
Anybody else feel like Starfleet is being portrayed as good, to setup a twist where they're grey, if not all out bad. That trailer hints that Starfleet will have a mission for Discovery (Presumably because they do not have the propulsion capability) - I Imagine when they undertake this mission it will be morally questionable and they will have to make a decision between their orders and their principles. At this point, it wouldn't surprise me if the Burn was an inside job / Accident. Perhaps an unintended effect of an experiment gone wrong, such as the subspace rupture in the Lantaru Sector following the Omega experiments. - Alternatively, perhaps the dwindling supply of dilithium became and issue and starfleet rolled out a fleetwide alternative that had a cumulative effect as more and more ships entered high warp - Perhaps this lead to a saturation that exploded all the active warpcores. After this episode I wouldn't be surprised if this involved "Dark Matter"

At first i thought they were bajoran federation-ish and they somehow managed to look less futuristic compare with the space police uniform ,the alien David uniform, hell even the nightmare TOS motion picture at least look like they're in a utopia future. but maybe it's just me...
The admiral appears to be played by Oded Fehr. A great actor, he'll make a terrific addition to the cast. I hope he's not just a one-off but becomes either a regular or at least a recurring character. The uniform on the left looks like a neoprene wetsuit. Like Stuart said, that kind of uniform doesn't look great on everyone - and they're also universally hated by actors. I hope it's just a pressure suit or some kind of protective outfit that won't be seen regularly. The poor actor wearing it looks like she's been covered in heat-shrink tubing. And not in a good way. White uniforms for medical personnel WERE used prior to Discovery - in TMP and TWOK, McCoy and Chapel both wore a specialty white medical tunic. Of course, in TMP Kirk wore a white short-sleeve captain's tunic, and throughout the movie era there was a white engineering radsuit, so medical wasn't the only section using white uniforms. I really like the white medical uniforms in Discovery, but I think it's a foregone conclusion that Strange New Worlds will likely use the standard blue sciences uniform for medical, possibly with a short-sleeve variant like McCoy's classic blue TOS medical smock. Of course, I could be wrong; they might go with a white version of McCoy's medical tunic, which would be cool. Side note: I hope the doc on SNW is Phil Boyce. He was a very cool character in The Cage, and served as Pike's friend and confidant the same way McCoy did for Kirk. Seems like they're going to play up the Pike-Number One relationship and the Pike-Spock relationship, but they still need a CMO on the show. Oded Fehr's uniform really has a 'dress uniform' vibe to me. I like the subtle shoulder boards much better than those on Admiral Tal, but I would have preferred the TNG style split collar. This one looks like a choking hazard. I really like the combadge on Admiral Tal's uniform. Very nice, sleek design. I hope it turns out to be the standard for all 32nd century uniforms.

There also is a art book coming out that I already pre-order -- a lot to dislike in Discovery, but unlike Picard it is (increasingly) watchable with some interesting ideas and a lot of money being spent (not always wisely or necessary) on production. 😐
Over thinking it and then forgetting something. Star fleet and the federation are not in communication with each other. Different uniforms shouldn't be an issue at this point.
They almost look like they get transported into them or they get grown/clamped down around them.
They could be some form of programmable matter or are transported/ replicated directly onto the wearer.
The problem with these uniforms is that they look more like costumes, rather than functional military uniforms. The Admiral looks like he's wearing one of those little jackets that Elizabeth Bennett and her sisters wore over their regency-era dresses in Pride and Prejudice.
I'm not really feeling the new style of uniforms for 3189... What I'm looking forward to is seeing HQ being a space station and not on a planet and the Starfleet ships, of which two have been seen in the sneak.

@@lordhoot1 Its been there since the launch of discovery. To me its more symbolic that these series are detached from the golden age of trek, thus the dividing line in the delta. I just don't get why they wont embrace the solid delta.
My issue basically comes down to...these uniforms actually look TOO Starfleet. Let me tell you what I mean: This is 900 years later!! 800 years after TNG/Picard! Do you realize how much time that is? Is there any military uniform or clothing of any sort worn TODAY which even remotely RESEMBLES the uniforms and clothing of 900 hundred years ago? 900 years ago was the year 1120 AD! The King of England was Henry the 1st! Go take a look at what he was wearing, what his soldiers were wearing. The iconography and so on. Would they still be using the Starfleet delta after 900 years? I would be astonished if they did. I had the same criticisms when, on "Voyager," we met the crew of the USS Relativity--from the 29th century--500 years later! (500 years ago was 1520; the King of England was the infamous Henry VIII.) And yet, the Relatively crew wore uniforms which were cut like TNG-era uniforms made out of a slightly different material and color, as they operated touchscreen LCARS which looked like the exact same touchscreen technology they had on Voyager. There was barely any difference stylistically or technologically. That struck me as unrealistic back then and strikes me as unrealistic now.
Furthermore, why are they (the Discovery crew) shocked and stunned that the Federation has essentially fallen?--after 1000 years!!!?? It's astonishing that ANY of it still exists. These are the things which are striking me as a disconnect.

First impressions on the new Starfleet uniforms seen in the Discovery trailer is that they are all waaaay too gray. But that being said, it's not bad. And I think this might be hinting that Starfleet isn't as good as it used to be. I think it's going to be a far more nebulous organization. Sort of a desperate times call for desperate measures attitude that will be in play and that Discovery will have to contend with. Now on the pic that you guys show at the beginning, I think the uniform on the left looks like an homage to the really form fitting spandexy suits from TNG seasons 1 - 2. I do like the Admiral's uniform. But again, I just have an issue with all the gray. The uniform on the right looks more like the Picard uniforms... it's just that it again has a lot of grays and some of the lines are way too bold. I also don't like the broken delta. They need to stop with that and go back to the solid delta.
I think 5 pipes with two lines would definitely be a Fleet Admiral's rank. I think that the most military look of the Starfleet uniform may be a clue to what the state of Starfleet is....exploration may not be the primary goal of Starfleet in 3189.
Looking at The Thumbnail the First Thing I Thought was it's Bajoran, Even the Insignia Pin Looked Bajoran, It doesn't look like Starfleet at all, It's Very Bland, and Dull, It Looks also like Uniforms From Stargate Atlantis.
I would pay genuine gold-pressed latinum to see Cpt. Foley in a Disco uniform.
One would think that physical fitness would be a solved problem by 3169, which ought to render the fitted uniforms a bit more palatable.
White/Grey Looks like the standard duty uniform, with Colour stripe down right hand side to signify division and Triangle Rank Pips on Left and Right of collar. - Can't see if this is the case on the new uniforms at starfleet HQ. White/Black we see in the interview scene are probable Starfleet security. Perhaps Section 31, although to be honest I'm getting sick of them so I hope not. There's a somewhat Russian / Babylon 5 quality to the uniforms. They're different, which I like. I think I can get used to them
I'm a little surprised that the uniforms have some semblance to ones from 900 years ago. Heck, I'm surprised that clothing in general hasn't changed much in the following centuries.

Captain Foley is correct. Chubby guy lile me wouldn't look good. the Bollero jacket works best with slim bodies. It may work for some chubby depending if the use a dark tone for the underneath garmets. To balance it out.

Anybody else feel like Starfleet is being portrayed as good, to setup a twist where they're grey, if not all out bad. That trailer hints that Starfleet will have a mission for Discovery (Presumably because they do not have the propulsion capability) - I Imagine when they undertake this mission it will be morally questionable and they will have to make a decision between their orders and their principles. At this point, it wouldn't surprise me if the Burn was an inside job / Accident. Perhaps an unintended effect of an experiment gone wrong, such as the subspace rupture in the Lantaru Sector following the Omega experiments. - Alternatively, perhaps the dwindling supply of dilithium became and issue and starfleet rolled out a fleetwide alternative that had a cumulative effect as more and more ships entered high warp - Perhaps this lead to a saturation that exploded all the active warpcores. After this episode I wouldn't be surprised if this involved "Dark Matter"

At first i thought they were bajoran federation-ish and they somehow managed to look less futuristic compare with the space police uniform ,the alien David uniform, hell even the nightmare TOS motion picture at least look like they're in a utopia future.
but maybe it's just me...

The admiral appears to be played by Oded Fehr. A great actor, he'll make a terrific addition to the cast. I hope he's not just a one-off but becomes either a regular or at least a recurring character.
The uniform on the left looks like a neoprene wetsuit. Like Stuart said, that kind of uniform doesn't look great on everyone - and they're also universally hated by actors. I hope it's just a pressure suit or some kind of protective outfit that won't be seen regularly. The poor actor wearing it looks like she's been covered in heat-shrink tubing. And not in a good way.
White uniforms for medical personnel WERE used prior to Discovery - in TMP and TWOK, McCoy and Chapel both wore a specialty white medical tunic. Of course, in TMP Kirk wore a white short-sleeve captain's tunic, and throughout the movie era there was a white engineering radsuit, so medical wasn't the only section using white uniforms.
I really like the white medical uniforms in Discovery, but I think it's a foregone conclusion that Strange New Worlds will likely use the standard blue sciences uniform for medical, possibly with a short-sleeve variant like McCoy's classic blue TOS medical smock. Of course, I could be wrong; they might go with a white version of McCoy's medical tunic, which would be cool.
Side note: I hope the doc on SNW is Phil Boyce. He was a very cool character in The Cage, and served as Pike's friend and confidant the same way McCoy did for Kirk. Seems like they're going to play up the Pike-Number One relationship and the Pike-Spock relationship, but they still need a CMO on the show.
Oded Fehr's uniform really has a 'dress uniform' vibe to me. I like the subtle shoulder boards much better than those on Admiral Tal, but I would have preferred the TNG style split collar.
This one looks like a choking hazard.
I really like the combadge on Admiral Tal's uniform. Very nice, sleek design. I hope it turns out to be the standard for all 32nd century uniforms.
