I am the concept artist who helped create the designs for #5 2389 Starfleet Uniforms for Flashbacks in Picard S1. So glad you guys liked them so much!!
Imagine how advanced Starfleet technology could be if they didn’t funnel so much of their budget into radically redesigning the uniform approximately every 19 months 😂😂😂😂😂
@@claywilliams6480 the high collars make them look stuff. High collars also tend to make people look older. It tends to make people seem to have no neck or short necks just like old people tend to have. A low collar such as the early tng or tos uniforms tend to give a more youthful look even on older people.
The TOS movie design is still my favorite. The colors are designated by the various departments: White - Command Grey - Science and Security Gold - Engineering Green - Medical Red - Trainee Black - Cadet In fact, this is a carry-over from Motion Picture. If you look at the colors behind the Starfleet emblem on the uniforms, you’ll see the colors mostly match for each character’s department,
For me, the best overall design was Spock's uniform. it wasn't a onesie, it had a top shirt/jacket with pants and the black collar. The all grey/tan/white onesies were the worst.
@@ForceMaximus84 yes, those are nice dress uniforms, but impractical for duty use. The Monster Maroons are a bitch to make, I own one. They should have had a more informal duty one though. Scotty was the only one that wore one, he had the black vest over his turtleneck. Even in STTMP Kirk had his short sleeved white shirt with the grey pants. Spock's uniform with the black collar was better than the other grey onesies.
Agreed with #1 ranking. Have loved the neatness and the austerity of the 2373 uniforms since they were introduced. The new uniforms for ST:Picard are good as well, they're like a much improved version of the early DS9/Voyager uniforms.
I’ve always viewed Starfleet as a military institution so I generally agree with your #1. I’ll admit my bias probably comes from being active duty, but flamboyance is the last thing you want in that context.
Trust me: The ST:MP ones were iffy looking at the time too Voyager had Grey/White variant uniforms for team competition which deserved a bit more attention I think.
I actually love the 2009 Star Trek uniforms. I feel the repeating Insignia pattern in the material is somewhat futuristic. It honors the source material while still updating it to be its own thing.
I always thought they had other priorities in the delta quadrant than to update their uniforms. In fact, they using the old uniforms even we clearly see that Earth based personnel changed to the gray shoulder uniform for me shows that the producers were paying attention to continuity. They are stranded in the Delta quadrant, old uniforms for them.
You think they’ve got the replicator power to replicate everyone a new set of uniforms when they have to strictly ration replicator power as it is? Nah fam, old uniforms do just fine.
No. Those are just re-tooled future Next Gen designs, cut to fit tighter. Yuck. Then again, you’re not going to get me liking anything that came after 2005 anyway.
My top 3 favorite Starfleet uniforms in no discernible order are probably the Enterprise jumpsuits(because of practicality), the Picard ones just before the most modern ones, and the updated TOS Captain Pike uniforms
I actually think the Kelvin uniforms (2009) looked more closer to the TOS uniforms than Discovery Pike's. And I think one uniform that could have been mentioned was the stripped down version of the TOS movies uniforms as worn by the crew of the Enterprise C in TNG"s "Yesterday's Enterprise". Overall, a great video.
I forgot to vote but my 4 choices are: 1) L (wrath of khan) 2) G (first contact) 3) Q(pike, enterprise in discovery s2) 4) E(next gen, s3-7) 5) M(discovery) I added 5 choices because the 4th place was a tough choice. Last is definitely the motion picture uniform. Haha.
The DS9 Uniform had the same color under shirt/ What made the color look different was the way the set was lit. The lighting made the shirt look grey. Also the Tv you were looking at also made a difference.
The “current” ST: Picard uniform are so identical to the DS9/VGR suits. The difference(if they had) are a small blunt pattern down the chest and the ranking pips are down on the left instead of the turtle neck area. I guess they wanted to knock over the Star Trek Online suits which looks phenomenal. The suit would have work if more color patterns where added like around the waist, wrist or side areas. The flashback ones should have been used and would have worked too with the “current” jumpsuits together.
Quite happy with these rankings. My favourite uniforms took the #1 and #2 positions. The only difference is I rate the All Good Things future uniform much higher.
Kirk's admiral uniform from the STMP is excellent. The only one in the movie. I rank the red uniforms from the Wrath of Khan onward as number one; TNG and DSP late season gray as number two with Star Trek Contact/Nemesis; the Pike uniforms from Discovery; the Discovery uniforms; and the Discovery uniforms from Terra Prime. Those are my favorite uniforms. The other unforms from STMP and the first seasons oft the TNG are pajamas respectively leisure suits and pajamas in space.
No matter what people think about the TMP uniforms, I personally thought Kirk’s grey and white admiral’s uniform was cool. Make a person look like they have a V shaped torso. And his wearing of a white, short sleeved tunic on the bridge was unprecedented as no one had ever thought of short sleeves being worn before or since.
Tbh I prefer the Discovery blue uniforms. They look the most like space uniforms with the jackets and boots and I really (I mean REALLY) like the gold, silver, bronze color coding over the kindergarten coloring of red, yellow, and blue. Not to mention the medical whites look extremely sharp. They should have stuck with the blues and found a way to phase these in to the rest of star trek. It just looks more real.
The wrath of Khan rank system looked like aliens designed it. Also, Mr.Scott had a lot of uniform issues. On #3 movie Scotty had an orange colored shirt. On Star Trek 4, his shirt was White, where did he get it from?.. Also, during the demotion of Kirk scene, Scotty shows up in Full uniform , rank: Commander, shirt color , orange. Scotty was promoted to engineer Captain on Star Trek 3 . Then on Star Trek 5, Scotty is engineer Captain on the Enterprise - A all the way to Star Trek 6. His engineer vest also had an empty slot on the right shoulder for a missing Captain rank pin.
Late to the game, but here's my take: I love designs that clearly show the Divisions, that is why the TNG uniforms, are my favorite, and that is why the all-blues of Discovery season 1-2-3 and the red TOS movie uniforms are near the Bottom of my list. PS. The Discovery season 4 uniforms look great aswell imho👍🖖
You keep using the word "Militaristic" as if that was bad. Why? This is StarFLEET .. a Space Navy. As such, it had better be militaristic, or the taxpayer of those times should get a refund.
2:15 I’m not a fan of the jersey style from 2009 and into darkness, but the more formal and clean version in beyond is the best modern update to the TOS look so far. The beyond version should be separate and at a higher place.
What I don't understand is that the Voyager Crew weares the "casual" DS9 uniform of the 2370s whereas any other ship in starfleet uses the TNG uniform🤔
The top two were exactly where they needed to be, my two all time favorites in exactly that order. I absolutely love the First Contact/late DS9 uniforms. It’s unfortunate that Picard and Lower Decks are all but ignoring them. (At least Data was shown wearing it in a dream.) But it’s sad that the best of the uniforms seem to be among the shortest lived of the Starfleet uniforms.
Sci-Finatics the grey ones were wartime uniforms, they were dealing with the Klingon/cardassian war and fighting both the Borg and the Dominion so they cut down the color for when they were on planets. But as soon as the wars were over they could change uniforms to have more color and be brighter once again
I think you could combine ones of certain eras to speculate on bridging eras but mixing every one together would be a mess. I'd like to see a uniform that bridges the red TOS movie uniforms and the uniforms seen in Season 1 of TNG.
So the entire reason starfleet color coordinates it’s uniforms with the personnel’s MOS (a core component of the world building) is because the show happened to come out around the same time as color tv ?
In Discovery and Strange new worlds, the helm and ops officers seem to wear the wrong colour and badge. Should be command level officers, ie Paris, Crusher, Mayweather and Sulu.
Not a big fan of the Discovery/Kevlin/Enterprise uniforms nor the late Ds9/late TNG films. I know it was voted # 1, but I always felt it didn't have enough color. I loved the VOY/Early DS9 as well as my # 1 pick - TNG seasons 3-7
I guess the bell hop uniforms of future Star Fleet in season 3 of Discovery weren’t out yet. No great loss there. I may have liked them better if they didn’t remind me of the grey uniforms forced on the crew on the Babylon 5 follow up Crusade. (Crusade’s far superior black uniforms remind me, functionally, of the Enterprise uniforms.)
Why didn't Deanna keep her Red and Black Jumpsuit. It would've been cute for her to wear her Red and Black Jumpsuit. Give her a red Miniskirt Uniform with the 4 adorable pips on her uniform.
This was very fan serving a great video! My favs were actually the #1 which surprised me actually it won out on the votes lol; I will say the J.J. And the Enterprise episode : "In a Mirror, Darkly" proved to me without an once of doubt that the TOS uniforms still have it ! Tho the officer uniforms in ST2-6 and TNG uniform follows right after for me.
The _"Picard"_ ones are basically just a more beautiful and intricate version of the _"Voyager"_ uniform, made with nicer materials(not on a shoestring budget). I'm guessing we all like the _"Voyager"_ ones more, simply out of nostalgia.... But yeah, I'd have to go with the *Enterprise* crew from _"Discovery"_ being my Number One pick.
I actually liked the uniforms in Star Trek the motion picture! One because they did not seem so much militaristic which searching for new lifeforms you don't want to give the appearance of we come to take you over! I know actors complained about them but... I don't like the replacement uniforms in Rath of Khan as everyday uniforms they to me seem more for dress occasion so at a ceremony yes, everyday no! I know I'm going against the grain but I also like the first uniforms in Next Generation! More body fitting like and more to what people who have claimed to have seen Extraterrestrials up close as wearing body fitting uniforms with insignia! just sayin! Peace
I don't agree with your order...Number 1 is my least favorite...For me number one is TNG...Then voyager...Then the original series...Four is formal looking uniform from original series movies...Fifth the Enterprise series...And the rest you can throw in any kind of way...
On a different topic I was watching the last Episode of Enterprise and I had a thought. Good point!
Not much different from today's military.
Yep, Doc Faust has got it right, Star Trek is just imitating today’s military!
Star Trek Beyond actually don´t have the same uniforms that are shown in 2009 and Into Darkness! The Beyond uniforms look a little bit more "classy"!
I couldn’t agree more, I like the high collar and no weird prints

1 Wrath of Khan
2 Enterprise
3 First Contact
I guess I prefer more realistic/utilitarian designs
The uniform that debuted in Wrath of Khan will always be the best.
TOS, my favorite was Captain Kirk's green wrap around tunic with rank insignia on the shoulders
I’d prefer the uniforms from later DS9 and TNG movies they should of been featured in flashbacks on Picard outside of data
*should HAVE

The "Picard Pull" is almost as famous as the "Riker Leg". This list was pretty awesome.
I think the ranking is good, I like them all I can't say I dislike any complete uniform, but your right about the collars, the less the better.

Really hate how much the uniforms change.
The real military haven’t changed their design much in 100 years.

The First Contact - Nemesis uniform might actually be my least favourite. 😆 I find it too drab for my taste.
I’m definitely more a TNG S3 - 7 guy.

TOS female uniforms going up as high as censors allowed are the best. Dr. Helen Noel OMG yum.

I would have thought so too, but public opinion said otherwise.
