    The thing that baffles me the most is how this Wii, which was advertised as the "Family Edition", only came with 1 WII REMOTE?
    Honestly it wouldn't've mattered if they removed the GC compatibility as long as it came with at least 4 Wii Remotes so a family of 4 could all play on the Wii together out of the box, instead of spending extra for 3 extra Wii remotes. If Nintendo had done that, I feel like this variation would've actually seen some sales.

    Fun fact: They did NOT sell these types of Wiis in Japan whatsoever. They just did not introduce this one (RVL-101) there, so no Japanese Wiis ever have a chance of being GameCube-portless.
    Also, White and Black Wiis can be RVL-001 (GC compatible) or RVL-101 (not GC compatible). You can tell just by the logo orientation, but you have to be careful if you're in the market for a Wii. A Red Wii will NEVER be GC-portless as it was only ever sold before they started introducing the Family Edition-style Wii, and the color is exclusive to 001. So at least if you buy a red Wii you will easily know what you're getting.

My grandparents have a Wii and they used to live at a trailer camp during the summer in the 2000s and 2010s, and they'd always bring their Wii with them. AMD bought out ATI in 2006, they then started phasing out the ATI name for their graphics chips. The previously known "ATI Radeon" graphics chips would be phased to simply, "Radeon" or "AMD Radeon." That was in late 2010, while the Wii Family Edition was released in late 2011. Nintendo had a WHOLE year to change the molds to have the AMD logo on it, but they either were too lazy, production had already started, or the chip was still technically made by ATI, and not AMD, probably the latter

    5:58 this is just my guess but I think the reason why this is it's because with the family edition I've seen some models where it's basically an original model Wii motherboard without the GameCube ports installed. In fact where the GameCube ports go is a separate piece & if you remove it On some models you can see the GameCube port holes. Even looking at the mother board you can see where the ports were going to go.
    The reason why it can't play GameCube games is because of the disc drive itself. Not the actual console.
    I imagine you could probably add the ports to the console & swap out the disc drive with one that is GameCube compatible. It should work & make it a backwards compatible family edition Wii.

    • @xJC2x
      @xJC2x Місяць тому

      @@LETxMYxNUTSxGO it's pretty much the same shell but with a new coat of paint. The only difference is where the GameCube ports were is now one long piece of plastic that screws on. The whole console itself is literally an original Wii but without native GameCube support. I've seen people make them GameCube compatible. You just need to add the ports & swap out the disc drive. Even though it shows the GameCube disc on the disc channel on the family edition. The disc drive is the only thing stopping it from playing GameCube games. The Wii disc drives are interchangeable so you can swap it out & it'll work with no problem.

    Fun fact, the family edition's motherboard is actually identical to post-launch Wii systems. It actually has the solder points for a GameCube controller ports, and is fully compatible with Gamecube games (in terms of chipset), it is just a software lockout. These later releases actually have better power management, and are frequently used by modders to create "GameCube Handhelds"

      @@ZenithKnight I can confirm this myself, since back when we first got a family edition one, we noticed the panel where you put the memory cards and controllers was screwed on, so when they were unscrewed, we saw the slots for where they would go, but there weren't any internal components to plug them into. Yet for some reason the data management center still had the Memory Card section.
      In hindsight, a bunch of this stuff highlights how cheaply the Wii as a whole was made.

  • @PkGam

    Yeah, this was a weird one. It's basically an early prototype version of the Wii Mini, but with the same form factor (sans color) as the original. But yet not as stripped as the Mini. Sort of like a "middle ground" since it still had internet compatibility and an SD card slot. But as you noted: People who complained about that already had a full-featured Wii, lol! So it was kind of like something for those who didn't care about the loss of Gamecube stuff for any reason. Like maybe they still had a Gamecube or didn't care about the games that had Gamecube features.
    This unfortunately did lead to some confusion though as some thought it "did" have Gamecube compatibility until they got a disappointing surprise. Some people were able to return it in time, but others found out too late and the return window closed. That's kind of an issue with console revisions compared to handheld ones because with handhelds you were usually getting an upgrade of some kind with a few exceptions while with consoles the aim is generally to just make it cheaper by removing stuff from it. Neither ideas are bad in themselves, but it's that lack of model revision consistency that didn't help matters.

    I have this version of the Wii. I HAD to have it because it's blue...that was my sole reason for buying it, otherwise, my siblings and I already had a launch model Wii.... I still have my blue Wii, still with the box and all of the inner-fixings. I actually used it a lot when I went off to college, left our family Wii at home, and I used it a lot until the Wii U came out a year or two later. I've considered modding it and getting some use out of it, it's basically been in the box for 12 years since the Wii U released, but my Wii U and its internal vWii are modded, so it doesn't even make that much sense to put the work into doing the Wii itself as well. I did fire it up a few months ago just to make sure it still works, though - since I think Wii's have capacitor issues if they aren't used for some time, seemed to be working fine. I thought about selling it at one point, but they really aren't worth much at all - even CIB.... I think the receipt is still in the box as well - which I believe I only paid like $90-$100 for it. This particular version in North America was a Black Friday/Holiday timeframe release for that discounted price. I think after that and for quite a while, they sold the blue Wii as a Skylanders bundle, you could only get them as stand-alone consoles without any sort of a pack-in for a really short amount of time. But even with that being the case, nobody wants them...they aren't worth a darn to anybody except those of us who have them for no logical reason. 🤣

    Scott "handheld revisions are usually better" not really, we went from the DS lite to the DSi and they removed GBA support, we also went from the GBA with the comfortable vertical design to the SP with the cramped horizontal design and they removed the headphone jack, then the Gameboy Micro was built for ants, the PSP go removed the UMD slot and the E-1000 removed online functionality.

    • @crazynaut223
      @crazynaut223 2 місяці тому +3

      I'll give you the micro and PSP Go, but the DSi introduced a proper menu with tons more features and downloadable games, which at the time I could argue made up for no longer being able to play the games from a system that just about discontinued. And you mentioned the DS Lite, which itself vastly improved over the original. And I dunno what you're on about the SP, it may not have been quite as comfortable but the beautiful screen and clamshell design almost unanimously cement it as one of the greatest redesigns of any console.
