Finally! EKV - Catherine the Great (the name of the band comes from the famous Russian empress). This is what many of us have been waiting for. EKV is one of the most popular bands in the ex Yugoslavia. The song that you just reacted to, Rob, is both wonderful and sad at the same time, because it's called "A couple of years for us", that is. they say "there are only a few more years left for us...". Prophetic words about Yugoslavia, which soon fell apart, literally a few years after that song. Prophetic words for the members of the band themselves, who, one after the other, died in the following period, some of them very terribly. Only the drummer from that concert remained alive, he is a famous actor today, who never in his life wanted to give a single interview about one of the most popular bands from the 80's in ex-YU, Ekaterina Velika or Catherine II the Great, of Russia.
Those people were extremely hard working musicians. Their everyday rehearsals lasted for almost 12 hours every day. They sounded live much better than on the records. They were deep, talented but also very sad people. Their end was tragic. Almost every single member of the band died either of drugs or from cancer, or from aids... A huge loss for our rock scene.
Hey man love this video,i just want to say drummer of the band at that time is Srdjan Zika Todorovic, one of the best actors of Serbia& Former Yugoslavia.
"Weltschmerz" mentioned in their music, is a feeling of world weariness, sadness about life arising from awareness of evil and suffering, kind of world-pain, sentiment that can be found in many famous poets, philosophers and writers such as W Blake, C Baudelaire, O Wilde, A P Chekhov etc., and that feeling of sadness and inevitability of fate is characteristic of their music and their beautiful lyrics. Btw, they were stoned all day, just like you :)
probably one of most artistic new wave band from europe (without uk). poetry and expression of Milan, lucidity of Megi and forethought of rhythm section. theirs sublime style was too high for crowd during this tragical years of transition when " rnr" goes to caffes from halls. fortunately - music gourmets got their channel. thank you Robk
Milan, the frontman of EKV, was also the co-founder of the band ŠARLO AKROBATA in 1980, which is said to be the best band in that era in ex-YU. The band had 3 members and was involved in experimental post punk / new wave music at that time, they had one album and broke up in 81. They left a great influence on music and future generations, even today when listening to their music, you realize that nothing more alternative has ever been made. You should listen to the songs "O, o, o", "Oko moje glave", "Niko kao ja" etc... From that band, 2 of the most important bands of the ex-Yu emerged: Disciplina Kičme and Ekatarina Velika
EKV was the greatest Yugoslavian band! Searh the biography of the members, thay were genius fulfilled their destiny and stay in Yugoslav rock-and-roll history forever. We talk about them with respect here in ex Yugoslavia. Great musician and great poets❤Milan Mladenović -vocal, gitar Margita Stefanović - keyboard Bojan Pečar- bass Srdjan Žika Todorović -drums
The song describes the moment when the band members found out that their first drummer, Ivica Vdovic, (who was also a drummer in the previous band 'Sarlo Akrobata'), and a friend above all, was diagnosed with AIDS, and became the first officially registered case in Yugoslavia. The following text of the song prophetically speaks of a slightly wider picture of society (of which they are also an integral part) and pessimistically concludes that we do not have much time left. Only 3 years after the publication of this song, the war in Yugoslavia started, everything went to hell, and 6 years after the creation of this song, the singer, Milan Mladenovic, died of pancreatic cancer. After him, in just a few years, the other members of the band ended up in the same way, some because of problems with heroin, and some because of heart problems caused by heroin.
EKV is among so many great rock musicians in ex Yugoslavian area in top five if not at the top, despite mot being that popular at its time. Evey new generation keeps being cought by EKV. Happy for you thet you felt them :)
All due respect to the reactor, but no foreigner will ever understand the greatness, importance and magic EKV had. Their songs were anthemic - they embody the hope of generations who fought the system, only they did it with words who pierce hearts decades after. It's not just an old-school rock. Ok reaction, but missing the heart of it all. Sorry. Just my take

A spookily clairvoyant song, since only a couple years later the ex -Yu war indeed started, and they really only had a couple of years for them at the time, like Milan the singer knew :-(
Ok Robk Reacts, I'm glad you comment on bands from Ex Yugoslavia. Admit that everyone you commented belongs to the London scene. EKV is one of the best bands in the world.
Rob, if you want to react to their concert like you said in the video, ie. if you want to understand their music, you first have to understand the philosophical concept called "Welshmertz", which denotes a deep sadness about the insufficiency of the world, which is threaded through their entire music and lifestyle.
Milan Mladenovich as the frontman is considered the founder of the "black wave", more precisely a group of young artists from the early 80's who wanted to show their talent through innovations and creative texts that are almost poetic. got the name Katarina the Second, which finally changed its name in 1982 to Katarina Velika (Catherine the Great) - (abbreviated EKV), a group that left its stamp and cult status, whose songs you simply have to be careful if you dare to perform them live, because it was Milan Mladenovich who was considered the strongest male vocal of Yugoslavia. He died in 1994 from pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, all the other members have passed away, except for the drummer from the recording, Srđan Todorovich, who is also a great Serbian actor ! PS: This song is almost prophetic and the lyrics of this band almost always have a double meaning. This song talks about the premonition of the collapse of the state after the death of the President of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, as if it were said that everything will become unsustainable, including all those beautiful and human things !
