Rock the Casbah: Rachid Taha, Mick Jones (The Clash), Brian Eno live at Stop the War concert

- Great live version of The Clash's Rock the Casbah at celebrated Stop the War Coalition gig on 27 November 2005, featuring The Clash's own Mick Jones, world music superstar Rachid Taha and legendary musician/producer Brian Eno. A DVD of the whole concert, which also featured Nitin Sawhney and Imogen Heap, is available from Amazon.
It was September 1981, and Taha bumped into all four members of the band just before they were due to play at the Théâtre Mogador in Paris. Taha gave them a copy of a demo tape by his band, Carte de Séjour. "They looked interested," remembers Taha, "but when they didn't get in touch, I thought nothing of it. Then, a few months later, I heard Rock the Casbah." He cackles mischievously. "Maybe they did hear it after all." The incident has since gone down in French rock legend. - The Guardian, 2003
Wait wait wait.
He did this first?
Are lyrics similar?
They give him credit?
Looong time Clash fan, just discovered Taha, never heard this.
No.
Taha was just thinking its crossover french/arabic rock band just give them the idear of the track.
The best Clash cover ever... GREAT. RIP Taha man.
Actually it's the other way around 😉
I've never heard a bad version of this song
Good old Mick - What a legend still rocking ......May it never end
It was September 1981, and Taha bumped into all four members of the band just before they were due to play at the Théâtre Mogador in Paris. Taha gave them a copy of a demo tape by his band, Carte de Séjour (Residence Permit), an outfit from Lyons who combined Algerian raï with funk and punk rock. "They looked interested," remembers Taha, "but when they didn't get in touch, I thought nothing of it. Then, a few months later, I heard Rock the Casbah." He cackles mischievously. "Maybe they did hear it after all." The incident has since gone down in French rock legend. - report in The Guardian, 2007

"Who's Mick Jones?"
"I don't know. Whats a Casbah?"
THey can't handle the Clash

JOU KING OF RAI MUSIC
Who's the drummer? He is very impressive.
When the drummer rolls to start the song and Mick Jones is pounding that guitar, after all these years it takes me back to that special electric, energy sound that made the Clash so Loved in Punk Rock music history. Fantastic Thanks for the Video! ""Surely I Do Like It"".
I assume that the instrument that looks like a lute is a north African instrument that I am not familiar with. What is it?
it's arabic , it's called "Oud".
Thank you!
Thanks...
It's an Algerian Mondol.
Janet Steinman exactly north African Andalusian mondol - algeria
Tahoe's not quite right, but more than you give him credit for (at least according to Taha). Taha saw the Clash as a teenager and says he gave Strummer a demo tape for his band (not sure if it was Carte de Sejour or an earlier band), which blended punk and rock with traditional North African melodies. He never heard anything, but a while later they came out with Casbah and he figured Joe had given the tape a listen and got some inspiration. Taha doesn't call it a ripoff, though.
Yes because the casbah only exist in algeria
Yes in fact he has a Back2The Future Delorean time machine, so he rode it back to 1982 when Clash recorded Casbah, came up with the riff which The Clash ripped off, then went back to 2004 and did his version!
Une grande perte pour la musique Algérienne s'en est allée Rachid tara 😢. Paix à son âme 😢Condoléances à sa famille et ses proches d'une fan Belge 😢🇧🇪

Who were the 69 tools who downvoted LOL
Faudel👍💪RAI
The Boys brought me here
This is pretty bitchin'. I wouldn't mind an Eno/Mick Jones collaboration in this lifetime, and if they chose to do it with these dudes, it'd be pretty rad. Kind of reminds me of "Remain in Light"-era Talking Heads.
I don't see Brain Eno dancing. I think you mean Mick.
I don't understand why you're getting downvoted. It indeed appears in a the guardian article that is quoted on wikipedia.
CHEB KHALID 👍💪
поет никак а припев отлично!!
She appears to be starstruck by Mick's too-cool presence.
Did Eno call him "Nick Jones"? Lol
I read that The Clash actually ripped off the riff/ melody for "Rock The Casbah" from Rachid Taha.

Also I'm confused by the song having a dig the religion of islam in general or dictators of islamic countries or what exactly?
