  • I have this thing stripped so much for the airbox replacement I thought I might as well measure the valve clearances while I'm at it. This bike used to be mine back in 1995 and it went through ten owners, it has a valve check history but can it be believed? There is only one way to find out.
I do these for a bit of fun, no need to like /subscribe, I have a day job.

Very useful but is there a shim change follow up?

There is, using the Triumph shim removal tool. ua-cam.com/video/l9v68sRz9bs/v-deo.html

@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff tThanks Yerry...Doing up a 1996 Triumph Trophy 1200. Got sight unseen. Done quite abit so far. Had it running but a popping sound from the exhaust. Sump contaminated with fuel. So had carbs off and apart, cleaned, and new airbox, just waiting for a missing needle spacer. So seems a shame not to check valve cleance etc. But a bit daunting.

@@links2lincs256 good luck, I went through a similar process with this one. Using the shim removal tool allows you to change the shims without removing the camshafts/cam chain etc. so it is a lot less daunting. It can be a little tricky in places but once you get the hang of the tool it ends up being quite simple.

I've found you can use the shim adjust tool another way where the bar is secured as usual but the leg to depress the bucket is put in place and snugged down to allow the shim to be extracted, instead of having to turn the lobe again.
