Trump is aspirational to bigoted, ignorant abusers because they need to believe being a bigoted, ignorant abuser is a winning strategy. They need to believe in a world where someone like them can succeed or at least avoid punishment.
I’ve always said that the ONLY thing that’ll break up his cult is if be stopped being a bigot. The only thing for certain.
I rather think he reenforces it by telling them they’re right to think whatever it is they think…. Today… depending on whichever way the wind is blowing.
The right always supports communism because they are all psychopaths.
Possibly the most telling thing Trump has said in his entire "political career" is when he remarked recently about how his base doesn't seem to care about lowering taxes anymore---but when he denigrates "transgenderism," they give him standing ovations, even though "five years ago, people didn't even know what that was." He explained his grift to their faces, and they laughed and nodded along. All he ever does is tell them what he thinks they want to hear, because he has no ideals of his own. He's like if ChatGPT had been trained on nothing but Fox News and InfoWars transcripts.
Trump doesn't actually have any ideology. People call him a Fascist, but that isn't actually correct; fascists have an ideology... it's a vile and evil ideology, but still an ideology. Trump certainly is a _demagogue,_ but not a Fascist demagogue. All Trump actually cares about is self-aggrandizement and ego. The only kind of ideology I could really ascribe to Trump that would even come close to fitting would be Nihilist Powermonger.

Funny thing is I used to be a Republican (yes kids, there USED to be liberal Republicans!) and got off that train because I thought the GOP had become too radical, anti-intellectual, and bigoted way back in 1994 with Newt and the Contract On America (yes, they called it the Contract With America, I'm calling it what it was). Oh, to be that innocent again.
Anyhow, it's interesting to me that if Trump simply would've come clean at the get-go, said "sorry, these were taken by mistake, by all means take them to the Archives!" he wouldn't be in nearly the hot water he is in. But he is fundamentally incapable of admitting error or being mistaken so thoroughly that he's made himself a world of hurt rather than admit fault, to the point of doubling down on it and hiding the documents from even his own lawyers.

All he had to do was RETURN them. If he _geniunely_ believed he won the election then he would have been confident of proving it sooner or later, which would make those documents HIS again! There are so many times he just could have admitted 'ignorance' or being wrong about that would have perhaps even won support from some Conservative Democrats in the end but _Nooooo!_ He knew he lost and it killed him that _Obama's VICE PRESIDENT _*_BEAT HIM!_*
Considering the "guests" Mar-a-Largo hosts and the fact that he enjoyed showing off the documents to as many people as he could, I sincerely doubt these were kept "by mistake." He took them and kept them on purpose in order to show off. I'd like to think he'd be sensible enough to try and sell them, maybe, but that'd be something a competent person would do.
And the worst part is, even if he's convicted and sent to prison, he can still be President and be in a position to do this again.

Unless he’s convicted of Insurrection or Rebellion, which bar you from running for public office under the plain text of the 14th Amendment, unless and until overturned by a 2/3 supermajority of congress. I’m holding out a small but of hope that the other half of Jack Smith’s prosecutorial mandate will result in such a conviction over Jan 6th, though I’m definitely scared it might not. Impeachment could’ve barred him from running too, but the Republicans were too chicken-shit to follow the facts and politicized what even their leaders said should have been a slam-dunk removal.
Let's be perfectly clear, so long as Trump lives, we can not allow a Republican to win the White House. I have zero doubts that the very first act said Republican makes after taking the oath of office will be to pardon Trump, at which this starts all over again.

Exactly!!! I grew up in south jersey, near Atlantic City. Back then, to the people in NY/NJ he was a joke to point and laugh at in the tabloids. That is, unless you were trying to do business with him, then it was no laughing matter…. he was an s.o.b. to cuss about.. he severely damaged or destroyed a great number of small family businesses in the AC area during the trump casino years. The rest of country saw him playing a (fictional) savvy businessman on tv… and apparently quite a few believed that he actually was that character. If only the people of NYC and AC (and Scotland!) could somehow convince the maga crowd that they’ve been duped by a disgusting con man…. but I guess it’s too late for that now. We need a verdict of guilty in an insurrection case so he can’t ever hold office again… scary times we are living in…

Minor correction, Steve:
The reason Trump keeps losing lawyers has almost nothing to do with the certainty of his guilt. Defense lawyers join up for that job knowing they will have to provide the best legal advice they can for a client who may be guilty as sin.
No, the reasons Trump sheds lawyers are:
1. Repeatedly refusing to heed professional legal advice
2. Refusing to pay his lawyers their agreed-upon fees
3. Repeatedly asking his lawyers to help him do more crimes or cover up crimes he has already done, both serious ethical violations that in addition to prosecution, could see them disbarred and banned from practicing law in the future.
When a client commits one of these transgressions against their lawyer, said lawyer is in their rights to fire their client.
Edit: So to summarize, the former host of "The Apprentice" is running out of lawyers because he keeps getting fired. Which... Honestly, is on par with learning that lawyers can fire clients from watching SovCit cases? I can't tell which is more entertaining.

Yeah, I'm still angry at Comey for announcing the Hillary email investigation being reopened and doing it one week before the election in violation of FBI protocols. The election was already razor thin and that may have been enough to push it from Hillary to Trump, meaning that if Comey had kept his fat mouth shut and followed ethical procedure, several hundred thousand American would still be alive after COVID and our politics might not be such an absolute dumpster fire.

You don't focus nearly enough on organized religions complicity in driving Trump's agenda. I have Hispanic family members who aren't racist, generally good people and will justify anything Trump does in the name of their God. This has been the most disturbing part of Trump's run in that he knows how to take advantage of institutions that rely on faith and are extremely ignorant and it also shed light on just how ignorant the religious groups in this country are. In a lot of ways he DID take their lunch money by being a millionaire begging for donations. Their lunch money is paying his lawyers while he jets back and forth between the resorts he lives at.

The photocopier in the hallway photo is disturbing, returning the files seems almost irrelevant if they were so easily accessible in close proximity to the copier. More folks think the bathroom is interesting but that hallway shot doesn't seem to get much attention.
While I know nothing about how US national security intelligence handles security leaks, not being american, if it is _anything_ like corporate-sector intel any documents are considered compromised the moment they leak and recovery is just to confirm which ones it is. I'd be surprised if the Pentagon hasn't already retracted all plans and covers dependent on them.

I think that the biggest reason, why Trump can't get any lawyers to defend him, has to do with his history of not paying them.
I haven't been able to figure out how anyone chooses to do business with him after SO many bankruptcies, after SO many unpaid debts, after SO many former colleagues thrown under the bus.

I hate that this country is governed by two categorically right-wing parties. We, as Americans, are nescient of the fact that our political system is which has been subsumed by corporatocracy and right-wing extremism, which was engendered by embracing Neoliberalism during the 1980s under Reagan-a Neoconservative war criminal without whom politicians like George W. Bush and Trump would not exist.
Americans believe that the sole determinant of a person’s political affiliation is their disposition toward “controversial” social issues, like abortion, gay marriage, trans rights, racial equality, etc. even though these social issues are considered fundamental human rights in every other fully industrialized nation in the world. A person’s political affiliation, in actuality, is contingent upon their socioeconomic views, which is why the Democratic Party is a staunchly right-wing party; they, like their Republican contemporaries, support military interventionism in other countries, while steadfastly opposing the creation of an actual social welfare state in this country, to the extent that right-wing parties which exist in other industrialized nations, like the UK Conservative Party, the CDU (In Germany), and the Australian Liberal Party, would be characterized as leftist parties in this country, while the Republican Party could not exist in these aforementioned countries, because it’s a fascist party which would be banned. Also, we literally do not have any leftist parties or politicians in this country, which is why it’s so risible that Republicans accuse conservatives like Joe Biden of being “left-wing extremists.” Even Bernie Sanders is only a Social Democrat, and would be considered a centrist in all other industrialized countries. Thus, liberals are too demonstrably ignorant and vacuous to vote for a social democrat, like Bernie Sanders in 2016 and 2020, or Marianne Williamson in the impending general election, which will allow a reactionary like Trump, or a fascist like DeSantis, to trounce Creepy Joe in 2024.

Shows that our elected officials need to have more instruction on proper handling of classified material just as it is pounded into us when serving in the military.
ANY government employee granted a clearence (at ANY level) recieves precisely what you did in the military. Many years ago as an employee of NASA Office of Space Sciences I was granted a clearance and my experience was EXACTLY as you described. Also, we were ASSURED IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that if we violated those rules the punishment would be SWIFT AND SEVERE!!!!
Or that those who seek to hold the position of "Commander-in-Chief of the United States Armed Forces" must himself (or herself) have served in the military at some point. Being dishonorably discharged from said military must also serve as a disqualification from eligibility (with some wiggle-room for exceptions, in instances of blame for their superior's misdeeds and so forth)

Yep...as a soldier and then as civilian contract worker who handled classified information daily, I can say mishandling classified documents was something you did NOT want to do/be accused of because the Federal government (military included) take it VERY seriously.

I used to be a Republican. I went to young Republican meetings and voted for every Republican candidate Rush Limbaugh told me to vote for. When Trump won the nomination and I was so incredibly baffled! How could anyone fall for this noted liar and conman's bullshit?! The day after the primaries I went down to city hall and reregistered as an independent.
Trump was the perfect representative of the Republican Party when he started his campaign in 2015. He represented all of the racism, corruption, stupidity, criminality, and hatred for America and Americans that are the guiding principles of the Republican Party. If you were baffled, it's because you didn't pay attention to what the party actually was while you were a member.

Any respect we may have earned in the eyes of other nations -PFFFT- gone. And if his mere election didn't already accomplish all of that, his actions as President further cemented it in stone, showing the rest of the world that we are never to be trusted with any agreements we make.

I think to some degree, if only on a subconscious level, the people who support Trump do so because they know he ISN'T fit to be president---at least, not in a conventional sense; They dislike and distrust our federal government and want someone to torpedo it from the inside. They also just like that he kicks down at marginalized people, because it makes them feel better about themselves. He's popular with an ideological minority whose political power has been unfairly augmented through decades of their elected representatives rigging the system. And unfortunately us Americans seem to care more about likeability than we do about actual qualifications and policy, statistically speaking. It infuriates many of us, myself included, on a daily basis, and I can't apologize enough for the fact that we created Donald Trump and unleashed him on the rest of the world.

The details surrounding this "classified documents" situation brings up the question "why the hell did he keep these documents in the first place?" Considering all of the stupid things he's done regarding them, I can only conclude he kept the documents JUST BECAUSE HE WANTED TO KEEP THEM. Their subject matter wasn't why he kept them...he just wanted to keep them. Trump is a billionaire real estate baron -- a billionare with mountains of debt, but a billionaire nonetheless -- and he can buy pretty much anything he wants. To a guy like him, mere possessions are unimportant. A Lamborghini? Big deal, he can buy one of those whenever he wants. To someone like him, it would be truly special to own something unique, something no one else could ever have...such as top secret Presidential documents. This would be a souvenir of his Presidency unlike any other! As such, the mere owning of these documents would be what he wanted. Endangering national security by revealing these documents was just a side effect. He wanted them, he took them, and they were HIS....as far as he was concerned. Yes, this was a crime and unbelievably stupid; but I'm suggesting this as a possible answer to the question of "why?"
Extortion and blackmail. He tried to spur a coup. He wouldn’t be against trying to hold government secrets hostage in order to demand to be put in power (i.e., made dictator for life).
His desire to keep them can most likely be explained this way. They're official federal government documents with the erection causing words "President Trump" all over them. This is a guy who would proudly hang his arrest warrant in a gold frame just because it's about him.
My grandma may she not rest in peace made every excuse for Donald Trump she even donated most of her stimulus check to him it's absolutely sickening. Even after mara logo even after the tear gas incident and January 6 she fully supported him with till her last day. And I will never stop talking about it
