I started following a geology teacher, Nick Zentner, during Covid. He helps quiet my brain so I can sleep and I learn a bit about geology before I fall asleep.
Granite, along with a lot of other rocks, is volcanic in origin. There was a lot of volcanoes or a big one with feeder dykes there. Lidar has helped them find what are actually the remains of massive calderas that were unnoticeable from the ground or from flying over.

Nice chimney technique on the descent, climbing granite is the best. If you don`t already have it, pick up a copy of "The Vertical World of Yosemite" by Galen Rowell - some light reading for those days when climbing isn`t an option. Stay safe!

Another viewer referred here by the Trek Planner. You’re doing great work. Very enjoyable. Not intending to be critical, but I don’t think you’re correct about the age of the rock in the Dells. Aren’t they about 1.4 billion years old? Vishnu schist at he bottom of GC is about 1.8 billion, as I recall.
