Plenty of kittens were had believe me. I certainly wouldn't do it in poor weather. In fairness though the track is not hard at all in good weather with low water levels, its just very rocky so decent tyres are a must I would say. Nothing I recall that would scratch the vehicles either. Take it steady, don't put a lot of unnecessary strain on the vehicle and just let your Disco do its thing. Great fun, you wont regret it . I would definitely advise a second set of wheels with chunky-er tyres. I do this myself on my Disco 4 I have 18" Compomotive PD1881's on her fitted with Cooper ST Maxx tyres for this kind of stuff I did Sarn Helen in her earlier this year while it was open and restrictions were temporarily eased. Made it look easy really. Normally 20" rims for motorway and normal road cruising, you don't need compos per se, but you should be able to get an 18" rim on those RR's but check out what the smallest size is, I would be inclined to think 18". The other thing I would suggest is you invest in a set of rock tree sliders. If you slide sideways a bit, and, it can happen, the metal slider will take the abuse, and not your car door. You can also get them coated so can be used to provide a rung up into the vehicle too. Some people go a bit crazy with underbody protection sump guards, steering guards the full works most of this stuff is a con IMO, rock tree sliders and a compressor guard are really all you'd need.
I agree about wheels and tyres. Don't think we will risk it again until we have a second set to switch over to when we need to. Thanks for the info, appreciate it.
neither vehicles worth that much now though know what you mean. Doing the track in a luxury vehicle somehow made it all the more fun yet wrong at the same time if you know what I mean.
Nice to see standard equipped cars doing the Strata, as opposed to aggressive tyres and lifts, which just are not necessary. The aggressive MT tyres just dig holes and are a menace. Well done for showing how it should be done - nice and gentle, with no damage to the road or vehicle.
Mud Terrain tyres don't damage the ground any more than any other types of tyres, and are certainly not a "menace". Have you ever driven a vehicle with MT tyres, because I suspect you have not. Tyres only dig holes when they are spinning, and a grippy tyre is less likely to spin. More damage is done to lanes by unsuitable vehicles with unsuitable tyres, spinning and skidding whilst trying to drag themselves along, than by properly equipped vehicles that just roll over the ground. And as for suspension lifts which you also say "are not necessary", I wouldn't want to tackle anything rougher than this lane (which is quite easy going) without one. These vehicles were near the limits of their abilities with their standard tyres and ground clearances. If there'd been any deep mud they would've certainly got stuck. You saw in the video how the back end of that Range Rover was dragging on the ground whilst climbing out of The Bomb Hole. He only just made that without damaging his car. And if that water crossing had been a bit deeper then that could've been a very expensive drive, Anyone who knows anything about offroading will tell you that a standard vehicle, even a Range Rover, will only take you so far. If you want to do it seriously, a modified vehicle is very necessary.
@@keithrushforth4019 Some valid points there Keith. Lets not forget though this was green laning in nice dry weather which is very different to off roading. The two vehicles were within their capabilities for the conditions. If you are doing serious off roading then mud terrains, winches and lifts etc are a must for sure. Unfortunately most of the damage done to our fantastic green lanes is not down to the vehicle or its modifications its down to the person behind the wheel. Drive it right, with consideration, and all is good. Thanks for taking the time to comment, hope you enjoyed the video overall. Cheers
@@WindinyourSails Your so right about the driver being the key. I just had to take issue with the comment about MT tyres being a "menace". People underestimate the damage done to lanes by water erosion. If you drive a lane, and then come back and drive it again after a spell of heavy rain, you can see the difference.
You'd probably puncture a tyre even if they were all terrain because the sidewalls are too small. You need at least a 65 profile for off roading. Tracks in the UK are pretty scarce I believe? We've got literally thousands of 4wd tracks everywhere in Australia. That was a pretty track, nice scenery and a good number of water crossings. The bomb hole looked steep on video which means it's really steep, well done for novices. Cheers.
Thanks for watching. You are right about tyres and weak side walls. Ideally need to downsize the rims to 18 inch and fit proper chunky tyres. I watch a lot of OZ overlanding and 4X4 channels, you are so lucky to have so many tracks to choose from. Wild camping is also something you seem to be able to do a lot of.
@@WindinyourSails not many people go 4wding in Range Rovers here because the environment is very demanding on cars and they are too urban to take the punishment. I have proper tyre and rim sizes, proper pressure and still had 3 flats in one day on a week long remote trip. Last time I saw a Range Rover on a tame track near Sydney it was stopped with a wrecked tyre. If you want to see a killer Range Rover in real tough Aussie action, then look up AllOffRoad 4x4 Adventures with Stephan Fischer. David Belantonio drives an old one and it's a beast. He has an Isuzu diesel motor in it for better reliability.
@@WindinyourSails I had a set of Duratracs on my Disco that were total rubbish. Puncture after puncture after puncture.. on near new tyres. I tried them because I originally had the MTR's (not kevlar's) .. that were brilliant. Now running Toyo 'Open Country' .. very tough side wall so they need to be aired down a lot more than other tyres to get them to bag out. Nice relaxing day out ... cheers from Oz (Down Under)
@@davidhuett3579 I think its one of those situations where if we have a bad experience with a product we think the product is rubbish but someone else may have a good experience and think the product is great. Guess the best we can do is study the technical specs, make an informed choice and keep our fingers crossed we have a good experience. Thanks for commenting - would love to go wheeling down under.
Nice L322.. like the white interior, just know I would have it looking horrible in about 2 weeks. Thanks for posting - where do you buy those support helicopters?
Glad you liked the video. Yes the light cream interior is much nicer than black in my opinion. As for the chinook in support, we do like to be prepared for every eventuality 😂
So glad found this clip, rrs 5.0 s/c 2011 owner since 2012. Do you recommend using the Gap IID tool or similar program to raise the suspension even higher than factory off-roading height for better 4slow offroad clearance? Would that cause any wear/tear on the suspension system at all? I know it might suffer abit of stability or comfort but only short/temporary height raise for some very specific terrain.
To be fair, I would be surprised if you struggled with all the modern traction aids you get now. I did this route years ago in a old mid 90's Shogun LWB. 😁
It was more the tyres on the L322 that were arguably unsuitable. It had stock Pirelli Scorpions with a fairly low profile on big rims (fairly low profile). Decent all terrain tyres on a smaller rim with higher sidewall and sidewall reinforcement would have been much more suited. Not saying you couldn't get away with stock road tyres but as the track is quite rocky you run the risk of a sidewall puncture which is exactly what happen to the L322.
Nice vehicles.. maybe get a slightly older landrover next time so you don’t have to worry about the paint work!!!!! 👍🏻 well done though you looked like you enjoyed your day
@@WindinyourSails For those rubber band thin tyres, going in with standard PSI or a bit more is the right idea. There is simply not enough side wall on the tyre to risk deflating it.
@@mikeb53 We actually went with 30 and 25psi on the RR and RRS respectively. Considering how easy we were going I wasn't concerned about debeading or wheel damage. Also provided a little more comfort and puncture resistance as you'd know. As you've pointed out we didn't exactly have nice tall tyres like a defender so it would've been silly to go any lower.
It would be a very different type of trip for sure and not one that should be considered, even if we were not in lockdown. It would be impossible to not damage the lane at such a time. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I’ve Done strata many times in land rovers and a few enduro motorbikes, taking both these through the bomb hole is impressive, the camera never shows the true angle...
Hi glad you enjoyed it. Happy for you to use some of our content. Please send me a link to the edit when you have done it so I can review prior to public release. Thanks
Excellent. Loads of ground clearance, Terrain response was brilliant (cant imagine how good the new ones must be). Engine purred, loads of torque so hardly any revs needed to tackle pretty much all of it. I have seen lots of videos of others doing this track and most of them seem to give their vehicles loads of revs and go much faster. Our experience in both vehicles was much more sedate. I think the fact they were both automatics helped as you have much more control. Hope you enjoyed the video.
Must be loads of tracks north Wales that you could try. We picked this track as its solid ground and therefore unlikely to get stuck. Not sure we would have tried a boggy track for our first time. Best advice I can give is take two vehicles if you can - just in case something breaks. Other than that just go for it, you wont regret it.
Very well. Not much difference. Sport had better tyres and therefore better grip. L322 with more torque tackled the inclines with lowered revs marginally better. Both very capable tho. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

If you are considering going this time of year be prepared for a lot of deep water crossings and some mud though most of it is hard rock/gravel. I would also recommend going with more than one vehicle.
When you say "we do have recovery gear onboard" and a Chinook fly's over, I was very impressed

Good day out 👍🏻😎
Yes very enjoyable. Glad you liked it, thanks
What's amazing is the range rovers actually made it to the location to begin with.🤣 Great job guys 👍
Managed to get home as well without any electrical faults lol. Thanks for your comment.
@@mikehzz9848 Ill check that one out. Cheers
If your after some tyres to leave on I recommend copper AT3 4S. Good wet handling and good off road too.
I have AT3 4S on my Discovery 2, great looking and great performing tyres.
Yes I heard they are good. Also been told about Duratrac.
@@karol190PL got them on my NP300. Road holding is as good as the conti cross contact roadies that came with the car.
Watch the laird doesn't catch you lol
Nice L322.. like the white interior, just know I would have it looking horrible in about 2 weeks.
Good trip
Thanks for watching
To be fair, I would be surprised if you struggled with all the modern traction aids you get now. I did this route years ago in a old mid 90's Shogun LWB. 😁
I got one now it's a beast shogun all the way
Good effort guys :) We do all sorts of 4x4 tours in the uk you may be interested in, can find us on Facebook or website :) happy laning
Thanks, I'll take a look at your website.
what tyres were you classing as silly road tyres on RRS. Just curious as may give this is go in my l494 with 21s (whats the worst that can happen)
@@WindinyourSails thanks. Mine are 21" scorpions. Have been considering a set of 19s for off-road duty.
I can’t believe yall did that on street tires.
Neither can we. Bit reckless really but shows it can be done at a push. Thanks for watching.
dope range rovers are sick
what size tyres on the Range Rover Sport? thank you!!
Nice vehicles.. maybe get a slightly older landrover next time so you don’t have to worry about the paint work!!!!!
👍🏻 well done though you looked like you enjoyed your day
Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you liked the vehicles and the video.
me and my friend did that in standard series land rovers. my 88" on 205s and his 109" on 750s.
Great tack isn't it. Thanks for watching.
Did you guys go in with the standard air recommendations or added a few more psi?
went with standard psi. not sure if that was correct thing to do or not.
I wonder what’s it’s like after the current rain you guys have received? Nice video.
It would be a very different type of trip for sure and not one that should be considered, even if we were not in lockdown. It would be impossible to not damage the lane at such a time. Glad you enjoyed the video.
@@WindinyourSails, fully agreed. 👍👍👍👍
It hardly ever stops raining between Tregaron and Llandovery. When it does, it snows.
Ça c’est une belle piste 4x4
I’ve Done strata many times in land rovers and a few enduro motorbikes, taking both these through the bomb hole is impressive, the camera never shows the true angle...
Thank you for watching and commenting. That Bomb Hole is a steep one!
Often overlooked these l322's, £70k luxury with defender ability back in the day.
just as good today for as little as £3k
love em, good vid. 🙂
Totally agree, thanks for watching, glad you liked it.
1x range rover and 1x discovery in drag
Hi there, I really enjoyed your video, I am putting together an off road compilation of the L322, and wondered if you would like to be included?
Hi glad you enjoyed it. Happy for you to use some of our content. Please send me a link to the edit when you have done it so I can review prior to public release. Thanks
@@WindinyourSails Thanks, I'll be sure to credit you as the source of the clip also.

Lads the sport with the 2.7 or 3ltr has any1 used a different engine other the the stock engine
Great video! which Tyres do you have on the black Range?
They are Pirelli Scorpion zero 255/50/R20. A good tyre but not for this sort of terrain. Thanks for watching.
@@WindinyourSails Good, aren’t they!
I am stunned the Sport was that good offroad ❤
It's the same car just different look to it
@@pascuionut8655
The Sport is the same underneath as the Discovery 3. The L322 is a little different.
Both vehicles are great off-road machines. Thanks for commenting
How did the 3.6 tdv8 cope overall??
Brilliant
Thanks, Glad you liked it.
great vid
would love to attempt the in my stock RRL322
im looking for something similar in north wales
Must be loads of tracks north Wales that you could try. We picked this track as its solid ground and therefore unlikely to get stuck. Not sure we would have tried a boggy track for our first time. Best advice I can give is take two vehicles if you can - just in case something breaks. Other than that just go for it, you wont regret it.
How did the 2.7 sport compare to the newer tdv8 L322???
Very well. Not much difference. Sport had better tyres and therefore better grip. L322 with more torque tackled the inclines with lowered revs marginally better. Both very capable tho. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Good!
Im superised the newer range rovers are capable of half feights in this video mk1 would done it easier as it was designed for it
What maps did you follow and where did you stay ? Guess it take a couple of hours to cover the track
Hi. We used ordnance survey paper map and Viewranger App on our phone. Viewranger is excellent and well worth getting. We have our own place to stay in New Quay so used that as our base. I would definitely allow 2 or more hours, especially if you stop for a brew up. Thanks for watching
If you are considering going this time of year be prepared for a lot of deep water crossings and some mud though most of it is hard rock/gravel. I would also recommend going with more than one vehicle.
