I remember visiting Tokyo back in the 80's and being blown away by the cutting edge design of everyday objects. From scissors and flasks to fashion and now the toilets are becoming somewhat common in the US.
The US realized you can just sell the same thing forever and make it worse quality, and people will keep paying for it even if you increase the price. Why innovate?
Picked this stove up almost 3 years ago in Japan and am very satisfied with it. It's either in my truck or rucksack when hiking, hunting, or fishing. To date, I experienced no problems with it.
Hey Luke, thanks for the video! I know this would take a LONG time, but if you ever get around to it, it would be awesome on your website if you made “top” lists for each item category. Like your picks for “Best overall stove, best budget stove” - that kinda thing. I wanted to look at the stoves you’ve reviewed and I think there was 70+ in the category. Even if I watched the videos on all of them, it’s still hard to gauge which are better performing than others. You’re the man with the experience, I’d love to see how you pit items against each other!
Hi everyone. Mine has just arrived in the post here in Australia. I ordered mine on eBay from one of the many vendors in Japan. I ordered it on December 8 and was notified estimated delivery would be December 18. This seemed impossible with the impending Christmas postal stampede. Anyway, it arrived on the appointed day by courier, and i am pleased to say, I love it. I couldnt get over how small the packaging was. Let alone the stove.... its tiny. I have a butane canister out in the garage. I am about to test it, but just looking at the quality, i know it will be ideal for my motorbike and car camping trips. I already have isopropane stoves for the colder months. PS. I only found and purchased this stove because of your reviews. Thank you so much 👍🏆
bought it out of curiosity, loving it for daily home use since it's perfect and efficient for heating small objects such as moka pots. Mostly use it for a single cup moka pot that's impossible to heat well through anything but camp stoves and a butane bottle lasts many, many cups.
I bought this stove over a year ago based on a previous review of yours. I agree, the stove works great and I really like it. I built a coffee station (using a Stanley lunchbox) and this is my primary stove. When it gets colder I swap it out with a vintage Coleman single burner gas stove - I swap them based on the weather.
@@kurtmyers I've used the 2-burner suitcase for coffee at -20F. The only difference I noticed was it cooled off quicker, so I could pack up and hit the road quicker.
Excellent review brother 👍 That stove is definitely unique indeed. Very original design for sure. Thanks for keeping it real as always Luke... much appreciated.
Outstanding review! Your observations and thoughts were on point and extremely helpful. I came away with a good understanding of the stove, and how, where, and why it would be useful. Thank you!
Luke another outstanding review on the Soto stove. We have purchased some of the gear you have recommended in your channel. I was the one that sent the Puerto Rican coffee to you. I hope it was to your liking and Susie too.Thank you for been honest and trustworthy on your reviews no one could ask for a most honest man as yourself. God bless this man and his family always keep him safe in his camping adventures. 🏕 Thanks again for such outstanding content, advice and teaching that you do. Alex R.Alejandro US Army Veteran
I'm on my second one, Luke, after seeing your review of them. It's lasted an entire year of motorcycle camping without issues! I will note that the first one I had, wound up with heavy winds pushing lit butane back down the system and lighting the button on fire. So to run it in 10+ mph winds, much less 20 or 30, you're going to need something as a wind break. Other than that, it's worked perfectly for me, up here in the Pacific Northwest!
I am glad that I found this video, I am car camper but I just ordered this stove for a quick kettle to make coffee, etc. Nice channel, I just subscribed.
Hi Luke! I'm so glad you did an update on this, and yes I'm going to say it too, COOL stove! I saw your preview three years ago, and the stove seemed SO interesting to me, I promised myself I would get one eventually. Sooo. . .last year I got one on Amazon. I think they were around $100 at that time, but I splurged and got one anyway! Everything you say about the stove is spot on! The case is NICE. The only experience that differs from yours is that my lighter has never failed to light the stove on the first hit. (unless I did something dumb, like turn the gas off after lighting instead of on!) I also use those covers on my butane cans. Luckily our Walmart does carry the butane cans, but are out of stock a lot. I know, I bought a couple myself! VERY reasonable! The only problem I seem to have is putting the burner on the can. I am going to try the method you used in this video! But I too, would for sure recommend this stove, especially since the price is much lower! If they released this stove in the U.S. I bet the price would come down even more.
I have the same stove. Love it, but as you said, comfortable for one person; pushing it for two. That heat shield and the butane bottle's close proximity is what limits your pot/pan size to about a 3" radius. Pretty sure I've tried an adapter and extension to separate the bottle from the burner, but as I remember, that caused some sort of stabilty issue by removing the bottle as support point.
I bought this stove for the same money you did right after you did your first review of it it has been a loyal companion ever since the weight does not bother me love the stove
Unique is unique. Definition - being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. No most, no very. Simply unique ..... the only one of its kind. Unique.
I had been interested in this stove since seeing it on your channel. I'm currently on a trip in Japan and picked one up in a Mont-bell store for 7800 JPY (~$51), as well as a new tent. I'm excited to try them both out after I get back home!
VERY cool. You can easily make a thermal can cover from reflectics and some gaffer's tape. The reason they reduced the BTU for this model is because if you trap too much heat under the pan, it can cause the fuel canister to explode. Encouraging the use of larger pots/pans is a problem. Better to limit the size so that the pot cannot extend over the fuel and cause a problem. Some stove designs have a heat driven disconnect that pops the fuel can off if overheated. I love Japanese engineering, and wish we could find more of it. I would love to see them create a similar catalytic heater for very small spaces and emergencies. Kovea, another great Japanese company, makes the Cupid stove, but honestly, even that is too big. After just a few minutes you have to shut it off, and then the cold comes back. Better to have a very small heat delivery that you can adjust and keep constant.
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY brother thank you for sharing your adventures and your gear testing and shared everything that happened during the testing

Your videos on this stove made me want to buy one of these. It is a very cool stove and it has worked great for me. I get it out and use it just for fun most of the time. It is definitely a product that is just fun to use. Highly recommend it if you can get your hands on one!
A good rule of thumb (heuristic) is that pure butane stops useful vaporization at 32F (0C). If you are pedantic look for the vaporization pressure vs temperature curve. Best bet in colder weather is keep it under you jacket a while before use.
Thank you for this _excellent_ video. Based on your extended use of the stove, you gave a very thorough review including pros and cons. The following is totally IMHO. Looks like a well-designed, well-made, fairly rugged stove suitable for one to two persons in warm weather. Below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, use a different stove, including but not limited to Coleman fuel, propane, or campfire. Based on experiences I have had or witnessed over the past 60 years with a variety of stoves and fuels (butane, isobutane, propane, Coleman fuel, alcohol, Esbit, charcoal, campfire), I would restrict my dependence on this or any butane stove to warm weather only. Again, thank you for this _excellent_ video.
I owe you an apology, Luke! I watch you all the time, I thought I was subscribed! Lol, just realized I wasn’t and made sure to now… you definitely deserve it!
Thanks for the expanded review. I've seen you use it in quite a few videos. It's such an interesting design. I like the folded form with the case. It would be easy to pack. No funny shapes. I like the cheap gas. I like the apparent stability. I have a few stoves from tin can alcohol to Esbit, a $15 Chinese "pocket rocket", an ooold Optimus 8R, and an older 3 burner Coleman. I love them all in different contexts, but that Soto I think might be the most useful and easiest to work with.
That little stove is cool: I have a newspaper grill. It comes in a box, 2 grills connected by two rings. It pulls out of the box reverse sets up, looking like a little trash can with holes in it. Do you take 12 full size sheets of newspaper wrinkle them up throw them inside open the grid things, put four burgers on it, close it, lift the grills like the top of the newspaper set the grill on it and it immediately start cooking. Noticing the insides cooked you just flip the thing over and when the newspapers are done burning the burgers are fully cooked and so juicy. 😋
This stove have been around Asia markets for many years and have been well welcomed . I have read in those years a report with photos that the user stated the burner head melted. It may be as Luke said ,there was a old version with higher output. Under certain circumstances the burner head overheated and melted. So Soto hake a new version with lower output.
Oh yeah, I remember this! Very cool stove! I'd probably make my own cozy for the butane out of reflectix. Just because it's easy. I made a freezer bag cozy a few years ago (thanks Darwin) lol.
Can't agree more! I have this stove for quite some time now (as my secondary stove). Getting the gas canister in the right position may be a bit tricky, but the entire experience is satisfying. Absolute joy. Having said that, for hassle free set-up and cooking, I still prefer my primary stove (SOTO ST 310 (some called it the spider stove).
I have used this stove for 2 years for 100% moto camping. It’s just works on so,any levels. I have tried about half a dozen different solutions. From trangia to jet boil, this is a quality stove and you can find butane cans anywhere in t he world. Device: set it up a couple of times at home, you don’t want to be getting to camp late and tired to figure out how the spring or can hook up works.
I still prefer my Soto Amicus and not for the lower price. As opposed to the Soto Windmaster, it's all one piece for much easier storage yet it still has 4 legs, a built-in igniter and does the job perfectly for me, every time I use it.
I cover my butane cylinder with a neoprene sleeve for a 24 Oz Nalgene bottle. To be honest, I bought it because I thought that was what you were using! Great video.
Luke, I’ve been a follower of your channel for a very long time. I don’t remember you doing a top 5/10 video of your favorites. Would you consider doing one? Not just stoves but an overall “what would Luke choose?”kinda video. I’d think we all would be interested in what you would choose out of all the products you have tested.
Nice stove. Cold butane is an issue and I've had problems in cool weather with a butane in the past. Still, I'd love it, but my wife would not be impressed with me getting a 7th camping stove.
Not like you’re getting a 7th wife :) you picked one and proxies correctly :) I sell my least fav Then get new one :) That’s my plan usually anyway Take care bud
I love this stove since seeing you use it. It’s cool and yes very hard to get even in the UK. I would absolutely buy one if I could justify the expense!
This looks really interessting. I dont go camping yet, so I dont know how easy it is to get butane if you are on the road here in my country, so I am aiming for a multi-fuel stove. If not for that fact, I would consider buying it. Having the case function as a heat director is fascinating
@@davids5006 I live in germany, but the long term plan is to go camping in rural scandinavia and the baltic states, where my main concern lies. I dont really want to buy a different stove just because I visit a different country.
I use a canister stove daily, in winter I just sit the canister in some water as mine has a hose connecting it to the stove! That stops it icing up , works great. Maybe a wet cloth might do the same job, I found the water doesn't need to be warm either.
Don’t feel bad :) Yoire a good Dad who’s thinking of time with his Son . Ps used fire maple a bunch in all sorts of circumstances and it’s great / jjst enjoy your time and don’t worry about the best gear :) God bless ya
I'm gonna buy it. I only wish you got a commission. Amazon also sells a small foldable Soto aluminum table that what looks like it would go perfect with the table.
Soto is selling Butane Propane mixture gas canisters as well as other outdoor gas canister vendors like Iwatani. With those gas, ST-320 works fairly well until 32 degree and start to decrease performance below it.
Soto's customer service is also very good. I emailed the US customer service rep when my Soto Pocket Torch XT lighter stopped working and they sent me a new one no questions asked.
Something that is unique is one of a kind and cannot the compared to any other thing. No adjective such as more unique, less unique, or most unique can be applied to it. It is either unique or it isn't. I had a good English teacher who taught me that. She was unique. You can say most unusual.
Looks solid and love the inherent stability but the butane is seasonally limiting. If they developed this further with a multi gas, all seasons unit like the WhisperLites it would definitely be on my shopping list.
Japanese camping equipment has been attention since 2015 as the comic book Laid-back Camping, going all heated up when the animation version live date back in 2018 which is told by a friend of mine who lived in Japan ten years ago and saw all of these happening. People in Japan suddenly interested in camping, whether solo camping or group camping, mixing up the traditional culture of the world's top-level customer service and thinking, and Japanese disciplines together, they got almost the best camping world. So envy all of these in Japan. Those unique lightweight and great designs, like the UNIFLAME foldable fire stand, 笑S (laugh's) foldable BBQ box etc, are very easy to find even I visited Japan last year in 2023 Feb, everywhere from 300 yen shops to outdoor stores, or maybe Muji also targeted the camping market. A friend of mine in Tokyo also joined some camping activities there and tried the foldable BBQ box, he states that just prepare small firewood and light it up, and you have a perfect 4-person size BBQ area safe for using wood fires and cooking with BBQ style.
I am a motorcyclist and it seems perfect for my application. One concern is the size of the butane canister but depending on the how long they last it may not be a problem.
Every commercial kitchen/restaurant equipment store has those butane canisters, as they power the portable standalone burners used by professional chefs for on-site work. They might not sell them in small quantities that a hiker might want, but if you have a place to store a whole case, they're very cheap.
About $150-$180au, not bad. I like the stability of the can being on the side and not the can under the burner. Anaconda has the butane @$13 a pack of 4
I remember visiting Tokyo back in the 80's and being blown away by the cutting edge design of everyday objects. From scissors and flasks to fashion and now the toilets are becoming somewhat common in the US.

This looks really interessting. I dont go camping yet, so I dont know how easy it is to get butane if you are on the road here in my country, so I am aiming for a multi-fuel stove. If not for that fact, I would consider buying it. Having the case function as a heat director is fascinating
What country are you in?
@@davids5006 I live in germany, but the long term plan is to go camping in rural scandinavia and the baltic states, where my main concern lies. I dont really want to buy a different stove just because I visit a different country.
I use a canister stove daily, in winter I just sit the canister in some water as mine has a hose connecting it to the stove! That stops it icing up , works great. Maybe a wet cloth might do the same job, I found the water doesn't need to be warm either.
This thing is awesome, and I feel bad for just getting a fire maple as my first cheap stove to test the waters doing two day hikes with my son.
Don’t feel bad :) Yoire a good Dad who’s thinking of time with his Son . Ps used fire maple a bunch in all sorts of circumstances and it’s great / jjst enjoy your time and don’t worry about the best gear :)
God bless ya
@@Lightandlovetoyou I’m definitely trying, but for the price, this would’ve been a cool stove to test the waters with, haha
Sounds like a nice stove to keep on a side-by-side (utv) for trail riding meals.
Something that is unique is one of a kind and cannot the compared to any other thing. No adjective such as more unique, less unique, or most unique can be applied to it. It is either unique or it isn't. I had a good English teacher who taught me that. She was unique. You can say most unusual.
Totally agree - drives me mad when people try to qualify unique !
Well, that was unique
Nice review. Very thorough. Thanks.
I already have a Soto Windmaster. Now, I think I'll buy this too. 😅
I would definitely like to pick up one of these.
Got a clone on Ebay. Works great for a fraction of the price. I'm very happy with that stove, and it's super compact.
That work n out looks good on you
I am a motorcyclist and it seems perfect for my application. One concern is the size of the butane canister but depending on the how long they last it may not be a problem.
Look for the half-length butane cannisters.
Excellent video
I like the idea of this for an emergency kit
They sell a table and a wind screen for the exposed side on Aliexpress. I made my own windscreen for it but the table is priceless.
Fantastic review. On my list.. thanks 😊
Japan is windy! Like the stability. Will keep an eye out for this one. Rules r strict for fires outside of beaches.
Every commercial kitchen/restaurant equipment store has those butane canisters, as they power the portable standalone burners used by professional chefs for on-site work. They might not sell them in small quantities that a hiker might want, but if you have a place to store a whole case, they're very cheap.
I like and would use this stove camping! It is COOL!
it's cool! yes I would purchase and use.
I have a Campingmoon adapter and it adapts this stove to other fuel canister types.
About $150-$180au, not bad. I like the stability of the can being on the side and not the can under the burner. Anaconda has the butane @$13 a pack of 4
Pretty cool, I do like white gas stoves the best. I have an old Savea, I think it's Swiss made. Like a rocket at full blast.
Argh!, You have just reawakened my serious "mountain equipment addict" condition. 🤣
