Even tho I personally don't mind the current models and there's been official proof that they can look good imo, I still love your interpretations of them(barring some small nickpicks for some). I'm fine if they keep or update the models either way. All I would want is them to make the current models more animation friendly if they decide to keep them. Frontiers was a step in the right direction in that regard.
Yea I highly doubt they would change the models entirely but I feel like if they evolve the ones they have now and actually animate them properly that would be cool. I’m actually just now thinking about it but wreck it Ralph 2 is actually a good example it’s the best I’ve seen the modern design portrayed. Thanks for watching the video!

i love tails' eyes because it reminds me of the first version of him in my opinion the best version because he looks like a kid, hes orange, body is tiny and his limbs are short and thats what you did but his torso is bigger but that doesnt matter that much hes still a cute kid
@@danspex. I have some ideas, like make him have just goggles, he's moustache should be red(as if he's irish), spendax suspendor with egg buttons around his orange coat, ect.
For tails I'd suggest giving him those black lines on the wrist of his gloves to make them seem like work gloves! Basically the gloves he had in his classic design
Ok, I have some thoughts regarding Knuckles. I think your design has the right idea, but I'd go about it a little differently. In regards to the arm thing, I think for the flexibility in animation and the consistency with the other characters I'd make his arms noodly. to get around the issue of them not looking sturdy enough, I'd make them get thicker towards the hands. (this is something I'd like to do with the rest of the cast, but for them it would be a very subtle effect, similar to the SA2 models, while with knuckles it's more exaggerated.) I also couldn't help but notice that his hand's look a lot smaller in your design. (I'm not sure if this was intentional). I would keep his hand's absurdly large because I feel like without that he doesn't pack the same (heh) punch. Lastly, If we're making his torso bigger I might want to make his quills slightly longer so we don't lose that flow they have with the rest of the design. Your design gives the impression that his head is a little far back and I think this might be a reason why.
I really like your designs, especially Knuckles. But I like Tails' white fur being a little beigeish but just a tiny bit so it's still bright and almost white; also I do like orangeish Tails more than yellow Tails. I would like to see another video, with Shadow, Silver, Metal Sonic, and Blaze, but you can just do whoever you like.
0:28 I would say the models are outdated and mostly overstayed their welcome but it is sonics most iconic look and I do love the model only thing is it’s been sonics model ever since Colors and I really don’t want sega to try something with sonics model again I mean think about Boom for a second nobody liked how he looked especially the bandages
I'm actually mostly fine with Sonic's Boom design. I have more of a problem with Boom Knuckles. Not to mention people mostly just complained about Sonic's scarf and sports tapes on his arms. Get rid of those and people would have stropped complaining about that Sonic design.
Love the darker colors you used for sonic and tails and the knuckles redesign is perfect imo hope you do a part 2 maybe do shadow,Rouge,Silver and blaze could be fun either way great video man!

Your Color shading and characters proportions reminds me of the satoshi okano art of sonic for the modern sonic designs ( Artist for the Japanese version of sonic 3D blast). The darker bolder colors and the body proportions allowed for some expressive posing and dynamic expressions. Makes it have a retro look but more defined for modern audiences. Great work
As a VERY struggling aspiring character designer, this actually piqued my interest. I didn't expect to like this video (take that as you will), but I learned a lot, and I love to learn so like, yeah. I'm very bad at designing characters to look distinct from one another, so this helped for any future endeavors. Anyways, side tangent, I gotta mention how good the current 3D models can look/do look in 2D art. Tyson Hesse and Yuji Uekawa really let these designs show, while adding tidbits of their flare to it to make them look stylized. For example, look at TSR: Overdrive, Chao In Space, and even Sonic Frontiers Prolouge: Divergence. The Sonic Channel art is also a really good example. Also, gotta mention Evan Stanley, gotta be some of the best interpretation of these 3D models to 2D art. Also, fan renders and the CGI cutscenes done by Marza, and formerly Blur, are AMAZING in terms of posing, expression, and overall liveliness when it comes to these models that can often look very dead. The Sonic Unleashed opening, Night of the Werehog, Black Night and Secret Rings CGI, the Sonic Lost World opening, and nothing beats the absolute beauty of Sonic 06 CGI, which both studios worked on, actually. Also, the promo animations for Sonic Frontiers and Forces look relatively eye-catching and filled with detail. Sucks that we didn't get to see them in-game, I'm still mad about that. Anyways, I've talked WAY too long about stuff no one cares about, so goodbye for 1000 years. :))

I think peak sonic design would be a mix of modern and boom, boom sonic has some actually good changes, like reducing the size of hands and feet, making knuckles actually strong and not just red sonic with even bigger hands, and giving each character some unique trait like Sonic's bandana or Tails' goggles and tool belt. It makes them individual and not just templates of the same lanky body and different colored shoes
I've seen a blue shoe'd Tails floating around quite a bit. I wonder what lead to its resurgence? (I know it was a concept design but I'm just wondering why artists are starting to color them blue all of a sudden.)
@@mill2712 Both orange from Tails and blue are complementary colors, you can see that by Sonic and Tails matching eachother visually. It became popular because of fanarts and a false concept art.
These designs look amazing, with the tails design I completely agree with the spiky stupid things, it's hard to draw and makes me more unable and make it annoying and a burden for drawing him, I will use these in drawings, you should defenitly do shadow, silver and eggman next, mabey metal sonic since he looks barely anything like sonic now
In my fanfics, I've done some region based prevailing genetics work to help characters from similar areas have hints of similar features. This will be important when I convert the books into visual mediums. For example, on Christmas Island the people are fierce and independent to a fault. They're all edge lords, so they will have harsher, sharper features. Sonic will reflect this in having a wider angle in his forehead between his eyes, giving him something closer to a V shaped face. Amy's family on the other hand comes from here and there, but mostly in areas where it's easier to live and people have softer, rounder, and basically cuter features. She will have a narrower angle to the same spot between her eyes, making them more parallel with each other.
I'd love to see more redesigns, these all have so much more character to them. If they were 3D rendered and given the same sort of soft shading that gets effected by dynamic lighting as has been drawn on a number of IDW Sonic comic covers (like one of the R1 variant covers for the 5th anniversary edition oneshot), it would be an absolutely perfect combination. These designs are the perfect stylistic evolutions of the current models and I hope to see more!
I love these designs so much. They feel nostalgic and have such a lively punch to their models. I definitely do prefer these over the modern sonic models.

You nailed it with all of them... except Sonic, I feel like he has too much body and too little leg, his whole thing is he runs fast, so I feel like the original limb to body proportions of the current model would work better.
Minor detail at 9:48: I noticed that Knuckles’s head isn’t as “flat” as his official design. Kinda resembles how the S&K (or S3/S3&K) sprites portrayed him.
Ooh these are surprisingly pretty nice! I especially like the darker fur colors. Guess I’ll give one nitpick for each character as well though just in case any of them stand out to you if you continue this series (which I hope you do) - I do think you should make sonics shoes a bit more pointy at the front. The strange bump in the ends just don’t give me sneaker vibes. - like other comments mentioned something does feel a bit weird with tails eyes. Ironically I think it would help if you rounded out the tops of them a bit more - I think the back of Knuckles head is a bit too big or perhaps it’s just the one dread behind us arm that’s throwing me off… - I’m sorry but with Amy it just looks like you gave her a bigger… chest. I know you said that the main change was to the Prime dress that fixed the back but I think I’m that case you should have made the pose to show that change or also included a back profile. That way it doesn’t just look like the only change you made to her was giving her bigger… chest

OMG I love your designs!!! EVERYONE looks AMAZING and more like they're Adventure designs and i LOVE THAT 💗💗💗💗. Actually, i like both Amy's dresses, the backless one is iconic but the Prime one looks great too, is better for combat i think so fits the character.
These are pretty good overall but Sonic here looks downright great. Adventure’s my favorite game, and I think part of that is kinda like you said where that model felt like it had a good mix of the classic look with new element. Also I like how much more cartoony everyone looks here, as it both looks nice but I could also imagine them let the animations be more exaggerated without looking off.
I think frontiers had a good design for sonic, specifically the in game model. Idk why they don’t just use that for promotions since he’s basically a shorter more classic looking modern sonic. And the fact that they weren’t lazy with the animations in that game opposed to Forces, it looks pretty solid. If he had more energetic expressions, I honestly think he’d be the definitive sonic model. I love your art tho they’re all perfect

I Like all these Upgraded designs, But one Nitpick for Amy, I think she should wear shorts underneath the skirt since we REALLY don't need to see that underwear like thing we saw in 06 and the mobile games, but what color should the shorts be? I've been thinking Black(that's the most common color I've seen for that) or a dark Crimson(to match her red dress)
I really loved that philosophy of slight enchantments and evolution vs a total reinvention that doesn't even resemble what it once was. Truthfully, I don't know much about character design but I do know a bit about franchises I love and I often feel that in today's world, companies and cooperation are dead set on completely reinventing franchises to the point where they barely resemble what they once were. Consequentially, this new iteration ends up having little to nothing of what made me love the original incarnation so much. But that's why I loved your point, I think it is a true lesson that should not only be applied to character design but other areas of media as well. I really hope that not just Sega hears it, but any and all media corporations that are considering making changes to beloved franchises.
I like the ideas of these, and really like Amy's look, but Sonic just rubs me the wrong way. Idk if it's just cause I'm used to the old proportions, or if this version just needs to be in motion, but he just doesn't look right too me. Maybe it's the chest cause that immediately stood out. It's not bad, just not what I prefer
I'd change Amy's dress to something else, one thing that particularly bothered me about her design, is how in Sonic Adventure you can see her panties during gameplay.

3:30 I think the top of his eye isn't round enough there, and his brow isn't big enough, and his mouth looks a bit strange, but it looks right with your design. I think you also got the colours right, and the look of the spikes does look really good, much better than the modern official renders. The mouth and the way the eyes curve into the mouth part also looks really great, and also the pupils looked a bit too circular on the official renders, and once again your design looks better there. Your Tails design looks really good as well, but I think the tops of his eyes could be a bit rounder and slightly bigger, and his tails also look better than the official renders. I think his proportions, next to the other characters, are really fitting for him (because he's literally 8, and the others are 12-16 lol) Knuckles' eyes kinda looked a bit too big compared to the size of, and his socks literally looked like *short hollow green cylinders,* and I agree with you about his proportions. Your design really makes his eyes look a lot better, his socks actually look like socks, and I really like his proportions on your design. Also his muzzle area was kinda too big in the official renders, but looks much better on your design. Your Amy design looks *SO* much better than how her current render looks, she looks much better with bigger eyes and slightly differently shaped pupils. I completely agree with 10:48, the image on the right definitely looks much better. It's really a shame how the characters' eyes look so much worse in 3D than they do in 2D... Your designs and the IDW characters look so much better in that area. I absolutely love your designs, and I think they would look really awesome in an official game, much better than the current official designs!
The reason they still have those designs is because they're conceptually good designs. You've admitted the fanbase is able to use those designs effectively. Not to mention Sega has talented animators. But for some reasons they're being restricted; especially infamously with the eyes. Really, I have more of a problem with the people in charge of the renders. Also, can we please give Modern Sonic back his longer quills? Shorter quills don't work for him.
I like the redesigns, but I'd just like to point some things out. Sonic: I feel like taking some inspiration from Heroes/Shadow and their more round versions of the upper body would work better. Amy: She's actually a lot younger than Sonic and shouldn't be as close to his height as she's seen here. Knuckles: I think bulkier gloves with sharper points would drive home the fact that Knuckles is actually meant to be fast.
These design proportions changes we’re definitely a good call. I think knuckles quills feel a little weird but aside from that these designs are solid. I think tails is my favorite of the bunch.
@@danspex I feel like the cast’s massive gloves have been a full on issue since day 1, it only got so much worse when Sonic moved to 3D. Animation has always struggled with these designs. It’s easy to have nostalgia bias, but this/something like this is what really needs to be done. Sonic Boom’a designs had issues, but at least they served as designs that were much more animation-friendly. With it’s failure, I’m doubtful Sega would be wanting to give a significant redesign a chance just yet. Would be neat to see these designs be used, heck even if it’s just in a fan-game.
Oh my God, these are great! They look more alive, Knuckles having a bigger chest and thicker limbs just feels right, and I also like Sonic not being that light-blue colored. They look very child-friendly, and I don't know what else to say. They're perfect.

I would honestly look pass sonic's model if it had any sort of cartoony shading like in breath of the wild, something like that would really help the models feel good.

I like these redesigns, they look more like animals rather than literal barbie toys like when I got back to being a Sonic fan I realized that all of the characters have overly reflective eyes like they're made out of metal or something, like I get that eyes do reflect like but this is a bit too much don't you think, Sega? Also I really like what you did with knuckles, I never really realized the issue with his design until the movie came about, like sometimes when I see people playing as him I assume that his strength comes from his gloves, but it makes a lot of sense with him just being more muscular And about the socks, I have recently learned that they're socks because I thought they were a part of their shoes, now that you gave them their cloth-y appearance they became instantly recognizable as socks Sega should really consider remodeling the cast because they're outdated and kinda painful to look at at times XD
These are amazing and I like these much more than the current official models. As for suggestions, I'd like to see your take on all of the characters, but some highlights are: The Chaotix, Shadow, Cream, and Dr. Robotnik.

Honestly, your designs, the original modern designs. The prime designs and the movie designs are not going to lie . Look the same. Yeah, there are some things different, but still, they all look the same.
I really like the designs for the main cast, especially sonic cause is very close the Dreamcast sonic. Honesty if Sega makes Frontiers 2 or just another open world sonic game, they all should have new designs
Interesting. I'm doing about the same adjustement you did (except the banana quills, I like them), altough I choose to make Sonic body sligtly taller (3 heads tall instead of 2 and half heads tall) so it can move better. For the rest, smaller hands and foot, rounder shoes, longer torso+shorter legs, round eyes. About the same choices you did. I'm doing them in 3D aiming for animation. Not an expert in 3D either but I'm learning (hopefully).
I'm honestly surpirsed you didn't go to town with giving the Sonic Characters accessiories, normally when i think of someone redesigning Sonic Characters i think of them giving them sports wear. Much like Sonic Boom, Their still pretty Amazing designs all in all.

FINALLY SOMEONE NOTICED!! i always hated how knuckles was skinny and didnt hav a big build, cuz you know HES SUPPOSE TO BE STRONG!! i liked his design in sonic boom cuz atleast his big build was emphasised (although sonic team did do knuckles dirty with his personality in sonic boom). love the redesign of knuckles
i love tails' eyes because it reminds me of the first version of him in my opinion the best version because he looks like a kid, hes orange, body is tiny and his limbs are short and thats what you did but his torso is bigger but that doesnt matter that much hes still a cute kid

@@danspex. I have some ideas, like make him have just goggles, he's moustache should be red(as if he's irish), spendax suspendor with egg buttons around his orange coat, ect.
For tails I'd suggest giving him those black lines on the wrist of his gloves to make them seem like work gloves! Basically the gloves he had in his classic design
Or how about making them other colored rubber gloves(like Boom's)? But not a bad idea, honestly.

Ok, I have some thoughts regarding Knuckles. I think your design has the right idea, but I'd go about it a little differently.
In regards to the arm thing, I think for the flexibility in animation and the consistency with the other characters I'd make his arms noodly. to get around the issue of them not looking sturdy enough, I'd make them get thicker towards the hands. (this is something I'd like to do with the rest of the cast, but for them it would be a very subtle effect, similar to the SA2 models, while with knuckles it's more exaggerated.)
I also couldn't help but notice that his hand's look a lot smaller in your design. (I'm not sure if this was intentional). I would keep his hand's absurdly large because I feel like without that he doesn't pack the same (heh) punch.
Lastly, If we're making his torso bigger I might want to make his quills slightly longer so we don't lose that flow they have with the rest of the design. Your design gives the impression that his head is a little far back and I think this might be a reason why.
I really like your designs, especially Knuckles. But I like Tails' white fur being a little beigeish but just a tiny bit so it's still bright and almost white; also I do like orangeish Tails more than yellow Tails.
I would like to see another video, with Shadow, Silver, Metal Sonic, and Blaze, but you can just do whoever you like.
Tails according to his original sprites and artwork was meant to be orange, never Super Sonic levels of yellow.

0:28 I would say the models are outdated and mostly overstayed their welcome but it is sonics most iconic look and I do love the model only thing is it’s been sonics model ever since Colors and I really don’t want sega to try something with sonics model again I mean think about Boom for a second nobody liked how he looked especially the bandages
I'm actually mostly fine with Sonic's Boom design. I have more of a problem with Boom Knuckles. Not to mention people mostly just complained about Sonic's scarf and sports tapes on his arms. Get rid of those and people would have stropped complaining about that Sonic design.
I like that these designs are more subtle- while still showing some more personality in shape and depth.

One thing that strikes me is how Amy lost her back quills in the transition to modern designs. She doesn't even have short quills, just none.
Love the darker colors you used for sonic and tails and the knuckles redesign is perfect imo hope you do a part 2 maybe do shadow,Rouge,Silver and blaze could be fun either way great video man!

Your Color shading and characters proportions reminds me of the satoshi okano art of sonic for the modern sonic designs ( Artist for the Japanese version of sonic 3D blast). The darker bolder colors and the body proportions allowed for some expressive posing and dynamic expressions. Makes it have a retro look but more defined for modern audiences. Great work
As a VERY struggling aspiring character designer, this actually piqued my interest. I didn't expect to like this video (take that as you will), but I learned a lot, and I love to learn so like, yeah. I'm very bad at designing characters to look distinct from one another, so this helped for any future endeavors.
Anyways, side tangent, I gotta mention how good the current 3D models can look/do look in 2D art. Tyson Hesse and Yuji Uekawa really let these designs show, while adding tidbits of their flare to it to make them look stylized. For example, look at TSR: Overdrive, Chao In Space, and even Sonic Frontiers Prolouge: Divergence. The Sonic Channel art is also a really good example. Also, gotta mention Evan Stanley, gotta be some of the best interpretation of these 3D models to 2D art.
Also, fan renders and the CGI cutscenes done by Marza, and formerly Blur, are AMAZING in terms of posing, expression, and overall liveliness when it comes to these models that can often look very dead. The Sonic Unleashed opening, Night of the Werehog, Black Night and Secret Rings CGI, the Sonic Lost World opening, and nothing beats the absolute beauty of Sonic 06 CGI, which both studios worked on, actually. Also, the promo animations for Sonic Frontiers and Forces look relatively eye-catching and filled with detail. Sucks that we didn't get to see them in-game, I'm still mad about that.
Anyways, I've talked WAY too long about stuff no one cares about, so goodbye for 1000 years. :))

I think peak sonic design would be a mix of modern and boom, boom sonic has some actually good changes, like reducing the size of hands and feet, making knuckles actually strong and not just red sonic with even bigger hands, and giving each character some unique trait like Sonic's bandana or Tails' goggles and tool belt. It makes them individual and not just templates of the same lanky body and different colored shoes

@@mill2712 Both orange from Tails and blue are complementary colors, you can see that by Sonic and Tails matching eachother visually.
It became popular because of fanarts and a false concept art.
I kind of want to see his back half of his shoes green to complement Sonic's red shoes, which also ties in altogether.
These designs look amazing, with the tails design I completely agree with the spiky stupid things, it's hard to draw and makes me more unable and make it annoying and a burden for drawing him, I will use these in drawings, you should defenitly do shadow, silver and eggman next, mabey metal sonic since he looks barely anything like sonic now
In my fanfics, I've done some region based prevailing genetics work to help characters from similar areas have hints of similar features. This will be important when I convert the books into visual mediums. For example, on Christmas Island the people are fierce and independent to a fault. They're all edge lords, so they will have harsher, sharper features. Sonic will reflect this in having a wider angle in his forehead between his eyes, giving him something closer to a V shaped face. Amy's family on the other hand comes from here and there, but mostly in areas where it's easier to live and people have softer, rounder, and basically cuter features. She will have a narrower angle to the same spot between her eyes, making them more parallel with each other.
This is by far the best redesign, simple and less change yet better than official.

I'd love to see more redesigns, these all have so much more character to them. If they were 3D rendered and given the same sort of soft shading that gets effected by dynamic lighting as has been drawn on a number of IDW Sonic comic covers (like one of the R1 variant covers for the 5th anniversary edition oneshot), it would be an absolutely perfect combination.
These designs are the perfect stylistic evolutions of the current models and I hope to see more!

You nailed it with all of them... except Sonic, I feel like he has too much body and too little leg, his whole thing is he runs fast, so I feel like the original limb to body proportions of the current model would work better.
His Knuckles design reminds me a bit too much of Boom Knuckles.
Minor detail at 9:48: I noticed that Knuckles’s head isn’t as “flat” as his official design. Kinda resembles how the S&K (or S3/S3&K) sprites portrayed him.

Guess I’ll give one nitpick for each character as well though just in case any of them stand out to you if you continue this series (which I hope you do)
- I do think you should make sonics shoes a bit more pointy at the front. The strange bump in the ends just don’t give me sneaker vibes.
- like other comments mentioned something does feel a bit weird with tails eyes. Ironically I think it would help if you rounded out the tops of them a bit more
- I think the back of Knuckles head is a bit too big or perhaps it’s just the one dread behind us arm that’s throwing me off…
- I’m sorry but with Amy it just looks like you gave her a bigger… chest. I know you said that the main change was to the Prime dress that fixed the back but I think I’m that case you should have made the pose to show that change or also included a back profile. That way it doesn’t just look like the only change you made to her was giving her bigger… chest

OMG I love your designs!!! EVERYONE looks AMAZING and more like they're Adventure designs and i LOVE THAT 💗💗💗💗. Actually, i like both Amy's dresses, the backless one is iconic but the Prime one looks great too, is better for combat i think so fits the character.

These are pretty good overall but Sonic here looks downright great. Adventure’s my favorite game, and I think part of that is kinda like you said where that model felt like it had a good mix of the classic look with new element. Also I like how much more cartoony everyone looks here, as it both looks nice but I could also imagine them let the animations be more exaggerated without looking off.
I think frontiers had a good design for sonic, specifically the in game model. Idk why they don’t just use that for promotions since he’s basically a shorter more classic looking modern sonic. And the fact that they weren’t lazy with the animations in that game opposed to Forces, it looks pretty solid. If he had more energetic expressions, I honestly think he’d be the definitive sonic model. I love your art tho they’re all perfect

Frontiers did have some pretty solid expressions from time to time. The cutscene where he talks to sage on chaos island is a highlight for me.

I Like all these Upgraded designs, But one Nitpick for Amy, I think she should wear shorts underneath the skirt since we REALLY don't need to see that underwear like thing we saw in 06 and the mobile games, but what color should the shorts be? I've been thinking Black(that's the most common color I've seen for that) or a dark Crimson(to match her red dress)

I really loved that philosophy of slight enchantments and evolution vs a total reinvention that doesn't even resemble what it once was.
Truthfully, I don't know much about character design but I do know a bit about franchises I love and I often feel that in today's world, companies and cooperation are dead set on completely reinventing franchises to the point where they barely resemble what they once were. Consequentially, this new iteration ends up having little to nothing of what made me love the original incarnation so much.
But that's why I loved your point, I think it is a true lesson that should not only be applied to character design but other areas of media as well. I really hope that not just Sega hears it, but any and all media corporations that are considering making changes to beloved franchises.

I like the ideas of these, and really like Amy's look, but Sonic just rubs me the wrong way. Idk if it's just cause I'm used to the old proportions, or if this version just needs to be in motion, but he just doesn't look right too me. Maybe it's the chest cause that immediately stood out. It's not bad, just not what I prefer

I gotta say I love your redesign for sonic in particular manly from those shoes, the feel more like shoes instead of those boots.
3:30 I think the top of his eye isn't round enough there, and his brow isn't big enough, and his mouth looks a bit strange, but it looks right with your design. I think you also got the colours right, and the look of the spikes does look really good, much better than the modern official renders. The mouth and the way the eyes curve into the mouth part also looks really great, and also the pupils looked a bit too circular on the official renders, and once again your design looks better there.
Your Tails design looks really good as well, but I think the tops of his eyes could be a bit rounder and slightly bigger, and his tails also look better than the official renders. I think his proportions, next to the other characters, are really fitting for him (because he's literally 8, and the others are 12-16 lol)
Knuckles' eyes kinda looked a bit too big compared to the size of, and his socks literally looked like *short hollow green cylinders,* and I agree with you about his proportions. Your design really makes his eyes look a lot better, his socks actually look like socks, and I really like his proportions on your design. Also his muzzle area was kinda too big in the official renders, but looks much better on your design.
Your Amy design looks *SO* much better than how her current render looks, she looks much better with bigger eyes and slightly differently shaped pupils.
I completely agree with 10:48, the image on the right definitely looks much better. It's really a shame how the characters' eyes look so much worse in 3D than they do in 2D... Your designs and the IDW characters look so much better in that area. I absolutely love your designs, and I think they would look really awesome in an official game, much better than the current official designs!
The reason they still have those designs is because they're conceptually good designs. You've admitted the fanbase is able to use those designs effectively. Not to mention Sega has talented animators. But for some reasons they're being restricted; especially infamously with the eyes.
Really, I have more of a problem with the people in charge of the renders. Also, can we please give Modern Sonic back his longer quills? Shorter quills don't work for him.

I like the redesigns, but I'd just like to point some things out.
Sonic: I feel like taking some inspiration from Heroes/Shadow and their more round versions of the upper body would work better.
Amy: She's actually a lot younger than Sonic and shouldn't be as close to his height as she's seen here.
Knuckles: I think bulkier gloves with sharper points would drive home the fact that Knuckles is actually meant to be fast.
These design proportions changes we’re definitely a good call. I think knuckles quills feel a little weird but aside from that these designs are solid. I think tails is my favorite of the bunch.
This heavily reminds me of the Team Sonic Racing character reference sheets.

@@danspex I feel like the cast’s massive gloves have been a full on issue since day 1, it only got so much worse when Sonic moved to 3D.
Animation has always struggled with these designs. It’s easy to have nostalgia bias, but this/something like this is what really needs to be done.
Sonic Boom’a designs had issues, but at least they served as designs that were much more animation-friendly. With it’s failure, I’m doubtful Sega would be wanting to give a significant redesign a chance just yet.
Would be neat to see these designs be used, heck even if it’s just in a fan-game.
Oh my God, these are great! They look more alive, Knuckles having a bigger chest and thicker limbs just feels right, and I also like Sonic not being that light-blue colored. They look very child-friendly, and I don't know what else to say. They're perfect.

I would honestly look pass sonic's model if it had any sort of cartoony shading like in breath of the wild, something like that would really help the models feel good.
It would be cool to have a sonic game with cell shading or anything to make it stand out

like when I got back to being a Sonic fan I realized that all of the characters have overly reflective eyes like they're made out of metal or something, like I get that eyes do reflect like but this is a bit too much don't you think, Sega?
Also I really like what you did with knuckles, I never really realized the issue with his design until the movie came about, like sometimes when I see people playing as him I assume that his strength comes from his gloves, but it makes a lot of sense with him just being more muscular
And about the socks, I have recently learned that they're socks because I thought they were a part of their shoes, now that you gave them their cloth-y appearance they became instantly recognizable as socks
Sega should really consider remodeling the cast because they're outdated and kinda painful to look at at times XD

I have to say, at first I was skeptical with every design when shown first, but after every thought explanation I was actually saying "Why, of course! It's so obvious!"
Reallt like the design, one thing is : maybe for knuckles, make the spikes a bit longer, since he's supose to be able to glide by "traping the air" in his spikes

I really like the designs for the main cast, especially sonic cause is very close the Dreamcast sonic. Honesty if Sega makes Frontiers 2 or just another open world sonic game, they all should have new designs
Interesting. I'm doing about the same adjustement you did (except the banana quills, I like them), altough I choose to make Sonic body sligtly taller (3 heads tall instead of 2 and half heads tall) so it can move better. For the rest, smaller hands and foot, rounder shoes, longer torso+shorter legs, round eyes. About the same choices you did. I'm doing them in 3D aiming for animation. Not an expert in 3D either but I'm learning (hopefully).
I'm honestly surpirsed you didn't go to town with giving the Sonic Characters accessiories, normally when i think of someone redesigning Sonic Characters i think of them giving them sports wear. Much like Sonic Boom, Their still pretty Amazing designs all in all.
