That tip about highilghting your unexpected spending on your bank statements is gold. And that each unexpected item will be connected to Approval, Control, Power, or Comfort = my mind's blown. That's an insanely helpful insight! Thanks Ted Talks and Dave!
Fun fact: Back in 2017 Dave sat me down to walk through some basics of money management and personal finance. He got me set up with a simple, easy to use spreadsheet to track monthly expenses (both expected and unexpected). I’ve been using it ever since and owe much of my ability to navigate personal finance to him!
The part about "not feeling safe in my body" is EXACTLY how anxiety feels. Dave is the real deal. I appreciate how he horizontally integrates money dynamics into all facets of life. We try to divide the world into clean categories, but the reality is that MONEY and FINANCES are tangled in all aspects of our lives. Awesome talk, Dave.
Such a powerful connection between psychology and money. No wonder Budget Captain has such a big impact for people and especially those that might not don’t even realize they live with these invisible barriers every day. The panic attack that brought me to my knees…
You put true meaning to the word PERSONAL in personal finance, leading with empathy and understanding without shaming ourselves for the decisions we make. Absolutely love it 👏🏽
Great message Dave! There’s deeper issues at play and if we take time to do the work we can better understand the why and how to tackle it going forward
Our emotional ties to money drive so many decisions and this was such a great reminder of that. I love that a tangible exercise was proposed to give a clear takeaway. Such a well thought out message. Thanks for sharing Dave!!
So many people overlook the emotional side of finances and focus solely on the practical side. Great job combating this and giving actionable steps to get started.
Known Dave since his time as one of my favorite instructors at USAFA. Amazing man and a great guide for financial education. He’s helped me personally and I’m so excited to see this success!
Absolutely love this message, Dave! Your talk goes past the typical mechanics of saving and drills right down to the core of how to actually make real long term changes in our money habits. Everyone needs to hear this, no matter their net worth.
A practical process for identifying our own "invisible barrier" with solid steps to eliminate it and move forward confidently on our individual financial journey.
Looking at your bank statement with the check point system & framework you laid out Dave was eye opening! I never thought THAT in depth before. I'm going to do this exercise & see what I come up with. THANK YOU! Great speech
Those underlying beliefs around money mess with us -- and love how these are pointed out to dispel the idea and conversations we have with ourselves about being bad with money. Deeply appreciate the vulnerability and willingness to undo the shame we too often cart around. Thanks Dave
GREAT TED talk! My wife and I had about an hour of conversation about our childhood regarding the CRAZY fact Dave shared that most of our fears about money are fully developed before the mere age of 7 years old!!
An excellent talk! We often don’t even understand what’s keeping us from achieving our financial goals- making more money isn’t necessarily the answer.
This is such a great talk! Unpacking the emotion behind money is something that so many of us avoid. Dave confronts it head on. And the best part is that he gives us a brilliant path forward!! I loved this talk. A must watch.
Excellent! This content should be taught at every age and stage of life. How money holds us back can be silent but is significant. Kudos to you David Won for your dedication to such important work.
This is such a powerful talk, Dave! I've thought a lot about my past experiences and childhood and how they are tied to my behaviors and actions as a father, husband, and CEO. But I've never thought deeply or reflectively about it concerning money habits. Thanks for all the time and energy you put into this!
So good!!! Loved hearing your personal story - it’s easy to think that saving would always be the right thing to do but it’s so much deeper than that! Great food for thought.
We ALL could do better with this topic and Dave has practical and vulnerable ways of helping with what we need even if we don’t know it. Side note-I was there live to see Dave present (something inside a living) and he rocked it! 👊🏼🔥
Dave has always been a guru in my eyes when it comes to finances, money, and fiscal savviness. More than that, ever since meeting him back in my college days at the Air Force academy, he has shown an equal, if not, exceedingly greater aptitude at caring for and wanting to help others. This video is a small sample of all of these things I have mentioned. Extremely excited to see Dave be able to share his story and expertise with an ever-growing audience!
Dave, thank you for sharing your story! So much valuable information here. It really leads to a deep inward look at financial habits and where they came from.
Wow! So many practical ways to rethink money. I really liked the idea of going through the last three bank statements with a highlighter and asking those three questions. Great job Dave!
Incredibly relevant to our world today, excellent message Dave! Unfortunately anxiety and money often goes go hand in hand and this video helps to address this common issue.
I love the activity of looking at your bank statement telling you a story. Sometimes the "unhealthy spending" is the LACK of spending. Hoarding the money from a place of fear and lack. Your talk offered great insights!
Couldn't agree with you more! Overaggressive spending can be just as bad as overaggressive saving - the underlying emotion driving all of it can be extreme fear to extreme greed or anything in between.
Thank you for sharing your story Dave. Identifying and understanding the why behind irrational money habits is truly life changing! Keep up the great work!!!
As someone who grew up just down the street from Dave and went to elementary, middle and high school with him, I didn't know that he had this experience. It reminds me of what my GrandPa went through with the Great Depression. One thing I wish Dave had said is that, like most things, the more willing you are to learn about it the better off you will be. I understand that he is referring to the emotional aspect of money, but the more you understand how debt and capital operate and have built our world, the more you can use this to your advantage, and to the advantage of those around you by helping to build the world into a better place. As they say-you are the five people who you hang around the most.
Erik my man! Thanks for tuning in. You make some great points but from my experience, knowledge wasn't enough to make a difference during this time of my life. The deep rooted behaviors took over and I had to get to the bottom of it to free me from those chains.
Dave is so talented when it comes to digging down to the deeper, softer sides of money. You almost never hear people talk about money in this manner, it's a totally different game. Keep up the great work Dave!!
Wow, Dave this talk is a game-changer! Thank you for being so vulnerable and starting it off with the story of buying your first house then having a panic attack. It's the moment you realize how our emotions and childhood shape our approach to money. And the way you connect the dots between our financial habits and our deepest fears and dreams. You have a gift for making complicated stuff super accessible and relatable. Seriously, if you want to look at your finances-and maybe even your life-a bit differently, give this talk a watch. It’s inspiring, eye-opening, and might just be the nudge you need to rethink your money mindset.
Well spoken and powerful emphasis on the courage to take charge of our finances! I’ve known Dave since he was a young officer. His expertise shined when he identified some major errors in our budgeting, spend plan, and execution log. And here he is today shining a beacon of light to inspire us all to grasp our finances and pay attention!!!
Incredible Insight during this talk! Dave presented some great insight into our minds and the way we think about money. So thankful for people like this who can speak into our lives and edify us through their insight. 10/10! Thanks Ted talks and Dave!
Two items found really interesting is when you mentioned the study highlighting our financial habits are established at such a young age. The second was reviewing your bank statement. I know i have looked back over my statement and did not realize how serious some of those comfort items added up to be. Really interesting perspective on overcoming financial stress.
Thank you for tuning in! It's crazy (not crazy) that our habits are formed at such a young age. Our brains are sponges and we absorb so much from literally everything around us - and those are passed on from generation to generation.
What a great message for us all! "True forgiveness happens when your emotions no longer want justice!" Dave's TedX talk about money is so much more than that. Thanks for sharing your personal story, Dave! What an incredible Ted talk!
Your remarks were insightful and thought provoking, Dave, particularly the subconscious influence of early life and family experiences upon our perspectives of money. I can see this true within my own life and within our family now, as our kids are growing. Introspection and awareness can help us recoginze and then respond to shortfalls that confront us. Thank you for sharing, and to TedX for enable Dave to share. Well worth the time.
Dave, thank you for sharing your story! It takes a lot of courage to open up about personal struggles, especially when it comes to money and mental health. How our past experiences can shape our subconscious behaviors without us even realizing it... that's what we should all have more awareness about! You reminded me that we all have invisible barriers to overcome. Wish you the best in your journey going forward. - Fenil P.
Awesome talk by Dave! Amazing to think about how many of our financial decisions are impacted by our subconscious. And the activity of using prior bank statements to analyze spending was genius
Enhorabona, Dave! Excellent presentation and I love the Bank Statement exercise. Keep sharing, my friend - you're helping people in an area they so want to get to right.
Awesome insight into the psychology behind our relationship with money! Understanding our subconscious relationship with money is vital in achieving true financial freedom!
Great presentation Dave! I really enjoyed it. Loved the advice about going back 3 months and reviewing your statement to remove emotion. Never would have thought of that but my rationale definitely changes the further back I go. Nice work man! Thanks for the great TED talk!
Thank you Cody! Glad you enjoyed it and took a lot of valuable lessons from it. In order for us to do better financially, we need to first look inward.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and making this so relatable - greatly appreciate the tips you have given and they make so much sense! Can’t wait to try!!! Thank you thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Great insights on the foundations to start addressing society's money misbehavior. I hope there are follow on talks to build upon these foundations. Keep it up, Dave!
Very well done! Sound advice. Only by first examining the emotional reasons behind your spending habits can you make better decisions in the future that are more in-line with your goals.

Agree, @BrandonGrill2767!
This was great! It definitely dived into a deeper understanding of our internal money issues that a lot of us are not aware of.
Thank you for shaing this Dave! So helpful to encourage people to adopt a different mindset when it comes to money. Well done!
Thank you so much for your support and tuning in!
This speech was incredibly insightful and also practical! I can’t wait to implement this practice into our financial lives. Thank you Dave!
Thanks for tuning in Shaun!

Excellent way to look at money. It’s not just about budgeting. The highlighting the bank statement idea is great. I’m trying that this weekend!
Thank you so much for your support and tuning in!
Amazing talk! Nobody is just born being bad with money. There’s always something that causes us to think and act the way we do.
There's always a root cause - and it's much deeper than one can imagine. Thank you for your support!

The panic attack that brought me to my knees…
We all have those invisible barriers - need to knock them down in order to achieve true financial freedom.
A powerful talk. Addressing the real issues behind money habits will allow you to unlock your full potential.
Excellent work Dave!
Thank you so much! True freedom comes when the underlying emotional and behavioral aspects of money are addressed.
I will forever be checking my credit card statements 90 days back. I love that exercise. So helpful..

It's more emotional than I could have ever imagined. Grateful to have had the opportunity to share my story. Thank you for the kind words!

What happened to my second comment? Follow up on the investigation?
The advice you give is rudimentary at best and you take advantage of vulnerable people by selling them unhelpful “programs” and budget tools
If no one teaches the rudimentary, how does anyone start learning anything?
Great perspective and testimony on how we are all viewing money wrong….And how we can change that.
Great Job!
Thank you sir! Grateful for the opportunity to be on that stage and share my story.

Awesome talk.
