  • Filmmaker George Lucas talks to Charlie Rose about the mythology behind "Star Wars" and why he thinks the movie's message is so universal. "What makes a hero, what's friendship, what's the idea of sacrificing yourself for something larger... They're all really basic things. So you say, well, you don't have to make a movie about that, it's very obvious, but it's actually not." The interview was filmed live on stage at Chicago Ideas Week on Oct. 17, 2014.

    You should watch The Mythology of Star Wars with George Lucas and Bill Moyers - that's one of the best STAR WARS documentaries that goes to the heart of the saga ..... Myths are lost language of the soul - it evokes certain ideals within us that are deep embeded - ideals of love, courage, friendship, sacrifice. As one native saying says: "Tell me a fact and I'll learn. Tell me a truth and I'll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever." That's why STAR WARS is loved by so many people - it's a modern myth and we need these stories as a humanity.

    This is why George Lucas, and Star Wars, is genius. It’s deeply complex, yet still easy to understand. On the surface, it may have some pretty basic themes and ideas, but underneath, it’s interesting, deep, and intricate. But it’s not made in a way to be pretentious, because it appeals to most everyone and is set up in a way that it can be appreciated by everyone.

    • @lorenzor124
      @lorenzor124 Рік тому

      He is not genius!
      He stole the ideas from the Biblical stories (which were real) and simply inverted them, like all good Satanists do. Good becomes evil, and evil becomes good. And he did a marvelous job bamboozling hundreds of millions of people. He tuned it with Eastern mysticism and New Age crap (absolutes are not true, and only the Sith use them).
      The real 'star wars' was the expulsion of Satan and his rebel messengers by God, eons ago.

So basically, great idea, not a great execution.

    • @Pajamalamalamalama
      @Pajamalamalamalama Рік тому +1

      @@white-dragon4424 There's a difference between director and a filmmaker. George's direction relied on the actor's interpretation and understanding of the material. It's a detriment in that it may lead to some awkwardness, but the strength in that style is that every line spoken by the actor is something they believe to be true and that makes it easier for the viewer to buy in to what's going on or what's being said. The awkwardness comes from the fact that the performance is personal and real, and real people are sometimes awkward. George isn't the best director or the best filmmaker. No one is, really. But it's hard to deny him as the purest, most popular auteur of our time.

    A true retelling of the stapled good vs evil. As a child I can recall seeing Empire, closed in a dark bathroom with a VHS so I wouldn't get distracted. As soon as I was finished, we drove to Abingdon (nearest Cinema) and saw Attack of the Clones. From such a young age I've been fascinated by this story and it's roots. I hope more than anything else that the stories shared in our time and times last live to teach our youth to preach it better to their children. Because frankly, we're doing a terrible job.

    Lucas got lucky with his first three movies. He was working with people who had the guts to question him and help steer the movie into the right tracks. It's inspiring, though, when people can take the pain caused by bullying and turn it into empathy for other people, which leads to standing up for anyone who we see being bullied. George Lucas seemed to take it a step further still, as he wrote from the point of view of an isolated person who overcomes difficulties and becomes a hero who helps other people. George helped a lot of people over the years, including older, semi-retired actors whose retirement years were made better by the influx of cash. :-)

      This is completely untrue. Watch any interview from Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan, and all the other people “who are the real creatives that made the quality of Star Wars” and they will tell you that George was so involved in every single step from concept design to set building to character Candace to consistent cinematography. And NO, he was not just super involved and these various people forced in all the good of Star Wars. Read the making of Star Wars books, and you will see how Marcia Lucas and the other editors dis not save the movie in the edit, quite far from it. She wanted to keep the schemes with Luke poking at the battle from bellow in, but LUCAS TOOK THEM OUT. Kasdan had good dialogue polish which is neat (and Lucas admits this, as he constantly shows how generous he is with credit, like giving Leigh Brackett credit for empire writing when she was doing a polish (little to plot imput) that would not be used AT ALL. He only gave her credit to be nice as she passed away), but George came up with 99% of the story and situations and atmosphere that make Star Wars Star Wars, like I dunno everything that goes into a movie other than nice dialogue. There are countless examples, but just read the making of books. They have everything you need to see how much of a visionary Lucas was from a narrative level to a production level. And yes, I wrote this horribly. Maybe I need a polish, I ask Kasdan.

    My dilemma: I always assume all those things are known to everyone and therefore common currency. It's surprising when you encounter people and certain recurrent motifs engage them organically while you see them as deliberately set mechanisms. I guess, as per Mr. Lucas, these recurrent things are not in everyone's awareness and thus they are more susceptible to engagement with them...Interesting in saying "not in a contemporary mode where people could argue about it," defying this is the thin line that separates distinction and allegory. Once a viewer perceives allegory the whole game is up.

    Without the the light side of the force, there is no dark. Without the dark, no light. Both must exist for either to be a thing, much like good and evil.
    Free will to choose the light side of the force would mean nothing if the dark side wasn't an option. Which is why the wars will rage on in the galaxy. But in the hopes that good will triumph over evil always... if there is no war to be won, than good cannot triumph. There is nothing.
    So what about the balance in the force? What does that actually mean? Should evil be as powerful as good? Did Ankin bring balance by destroying the Sith, or destroying the Jedi earlier?
    I really don't know, in case you can't tell, I'm philosophizing on the go, and most of this is above my current level of thinking. For now I'll just go enjoy a lightsaber duel.

      He was saying that religion in its myriad forms is one way of reaffirming values that we have instinctively. The reason human society exists today is because, at any given point in human history, enough people decided it was easier and more beneficial to get along. That holds true no matter how far you go back, even unto the time when we were first climbing down from the trees. We fluctuate between periods of strife, yes, but no matter your creed or calling, every social paradigm is founded on the concept of fellowship. Whether your values comes from religion or from Star Wars makes no difference, because the values are fundamentally the same.

    This is a serious question to all the die-hard Star Wars fans out there:
    In your opinion, why is Star Wars so successful and why do you think it became a pop culture phenomenon?

    • @musicalnotextr
      @musicalnotextr 9 років тому +6

      It came out at the right time; the summer of a year in the 70s; when movies tended not to be bombastically fun and simple: an action movie about good guys battling bad guys in space. THAT'S ALL IT REALLY WAS. And then it had 2 great sequels; making a cohesive trilogy! Add some revolutionary marketing, merchandising, and multiple parodies (plus more "conversation" by the even more financially successful prequel trilogy). That is why Star Wars was so successful.

    • @enterbalak
      @enterbalak 9 років тому +4

      musicalnotextr Bit more than that, when it come out.. nothing looked as real as it did.. and Star Wars movies created a new way of capturing and making Sci-Fi universe aswell as Movies in general. It took it a step further and set the bar.
      It also improved the Sci-Fi genre which cool costume designs and creatures that also seemed very well thought out. What did they have back then? Doctor who? a Alien dressed as a trash can or something? StarWars for alot of people at the time made Sci-fi cool and fresh!

      HangDeath True, the special effects were also very revolutionary for their time. They still look pretty good today; modern blockbusters could take a cue and realize that computers don't always make everything better; just look at the STAR WARS prequels.

    • @musicalnotextr
      @musicalnotextr 9 років тому +3

      FriendlyCroock Hey, he asked why it became a pop culture sensation, not why it was so great. I don't understand why you would be offended anyway. The 70s were a time when the movies weren't necessarily known for being a "fun event", especially space movies (see 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY; interesting movie to be sure, but watching it requires a bit of effort due to how cerebral it is). STAR WARS on the other hand was a movie set in space, but it didn't have the complex sci-fi mumbo jumbo tacted on to it (unless you count midichorians or politics in the prequels). It was a movie about a crack team of heroes fighting an oppressive empire that spans the galaxy. It had samurai sword fights, western-like shootouts, and World War I-style dogfights... IN SPACE! How could it not be fun? It may not have been written by Chris Nolan or anything, but it was exciting, a spectacle, and refreshing for the time. And it did hint at an interesting lore and mythos that was explored even further in EMPIRE and JEDI. That's why it was such a hit in the first place. And let's be honest: it's legacy wouldn't be what it is without its merchandising. As corporate and "evil" as that sounds to the cynical, it was inspiring for the children that got to own and play with STAR WARS toys and own STAR WARS stuff, especially since STAR WARS had themes of hope in times of getting beaten down and the merchandising were ultimately subtle reminders of that (plus it allowed kids to come up with their own ways to have fun, to tell new stories and even to make fan films of their own).
      I'd like to think that what I said above actually glorifys STAR WARS, so I ask why do you have a problem with this?

    Lucas has a bloated idea of his intellect and importance. He is a child of the zeitgeist - more lucky than creative and intelligent - and would have easily been lost to time without the almost-forgotten but critical editing work done by his then wife, Marcia Lucas.

      Thank god there's someone sensible here. Yes, he had an idea to make a modern Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers type movie, and did so by poaching movies like Hidden Fortress, 633 Squadron, Dam Busters, and Where Eagles Dare. To make it happen it took a fantastic bunch of expert SFX hippies, John Williams, Ralph McQuarrie, movie editors like Marcia, cameraman Gill Taylor, and tons of other talent. Where Lucas really shone was his abilities to run the business and make deals.

  • @rainbowthrustars

    JFC George Lucas is delusional to the core. He did not even create star wars all on his own. The idea was his of course, I guess since a child I'm sure he liked fantasy and stories and adventure, but the whole thing that star wars became what it became is due to a lot of talented people who helped him the first three movies together.

    • @bjornvanweiden
      @bjornvanweiden 9 років тому +6

      Whats the delusion? No director makes a movie by themselves. They use talented people to help them. They just direct! DIrect the art in the way they want it.
      You can say all you want about the prequels but the fact is that they were all mayor suceses. Kids and teens loved the movies! I didn't love them and alot of older fans didn't, but more than enough people did.
      So you can say what you want about the man but in the end of the day he is resposible for the most sucessfull film series in human history. That's no delusion, that's fact man.

      Tjacksun He actually didn't write the whole script himself. He only wrote the entire scripts of the prequels, and they sucked. During the originals, he had help writing the first script and was only co-writing Empire and Return. It's funny because the movie not directed by George Lucas is the best Star Wars film, Empire Strikes Back.
