Hate to interject with facts but the current state of Hollywood film making owes as much praise as it can heap on George Lucas. True, the prequels weren't as good as everyone assumed they'd be but to say Lucas doesn't know what he's doing is ridiculously short sighted and just exposes ignorance. When you think highest quality theater sound, that would be THX. Lucas developed that. When you think highest quality special effects whether they're in camera or digital, that would be Industrial Light and Magic. George Lucas started that. When you think best quality sound recording and editing, Skywalker Sound. Guess who? That's right little learner, George Lucas.
Every big budget blockbuster owes Lucas a debt of gratitude. Before 1977, Hollywood had never seen something as big as Star Wars. Every studio turned him down except for 20th Century Fox. Even they were schooled in blockbuster marketing because they foolishly signed over to Lucas all aspects of his film beyond theatrical release. There's a reason why you stores are flooded with really cool film related toys, guess who started that all? Oh, you're learning, good for you.
Oh yeah, a little franchise called Indiana Jones, that was a lot of George Lucas too.

      1. jaws was also important in the inception of the blockbuster 2. merchandising has only led to rampant consumerism and infantilization of adults so that’s not really a boon to Lucas imo. but i will add lucas’ spirituality as he imbues it in his work is very important to the films and society at large. shame that aspect didnt carry over to any of the trends he kickstarted.

Charlie didn't seem to catch George's self-referential joke about being able to "go back and fix mistakes", i.e., his tinkering with the Star Wars films, and neither did the audience. And Charlie's chuckling in strange places, as if he's not really following George's lead...but at least he mostly just lets him talk, which is great, as George is in a pretty talkative mood. But it would've been a much better interview for us SW fans if Charlie had known the right questions to ask. If they are truly friends, GL might have been more forthcoming, and maybe would've elaborated or shown some reflective growth about things like the prequel hate and the aforementioned endless tinkering with the OT. Still, interesting. It was fascinating and inspiring to listen to George talk about his life. He seems like a very down to earth guy who just had incredible drive to do things his way, and that's pretty badass. I'd love to see him finally really do one of the experimental "tone poem" films he's been talking about for years...that would be awesome. It would be amazing to see him become an avant garde experimental cinema artist for this chapter of his life. Bravo, George, and THANK YOU.

GL was a great visionary when he did THX1138, American Graffiti and Star Wars. The problem with Lucas was that after the massive success of SW, he from being a filmmaker to entrepreneur. Not that that is a bad thing, but that he lost his sense of movie making. Still, he was an innovator. THX surround sound, he was owner of Pixar before seling it to Disney, and he was one of the men behind many old movies being remastered. Yeah, he should've co-wrote the prequels and hire someone else to direct the films, but in my opinion they are entertaining.

(You know they don't paint them with accurate colors...or didn't up to the ninties...film responded oddly to the the paintings and gave them a cast that needed to be corrected)

When the Lucas Art Museum wasn't going to be built in Chicago it should have been built in Toledo, OH. Makes perfect sense because where is Toledo? Lucas County, of course! Ohio named an entire county for him! And they had to be visionaries because George Lucas was born May 14, 1944 and Lucas County, OH was settled June 20, 1835. See?!?! 109 years before George was born, someone in Ohio knew a future filmmaker and all-around smart businessman was going to be born and make films that would change the film industry! :-D

Rey can choose her own. George Lucas's father wouldn't pay for his art school. His father wanted GL to sell office supplies. How boring is that.

Its just not that simple. People grow and evolve. And in George Lucas'case - fail to get filmmakers who would and could challenge him to board the prequels' productions and having to surround himself with what turned out to be yes men.
I truly so not believe he did this all on purpose. It must just be that the journey took a turn on him or he took a wrong turn in it and the rest is history. Making movies is hard, especially when you don't have a proper red team poking necessary holes in what you came up with

So, Lucas sold Star Wars for a billion dollars (at least.) He announced that he would be spending it on education for the future because people badly needed to be better educated. I've been waiting to see if he'd keep his word. Haven't heard a thing, besides this film museum. Not that it's a terrible idea, but it won't save the human race. What about paying for scholarships for gifted young idealists? Or founding an organization to fight to change the public education system to better work for right-side-of-the-brain artists and thinkers and/or fight against abuse in schools? Or founding schools for artistic minds, greatly encouraging creative minds and setting an example for others? Or funding filmmakers to make educational documentaries about the issues which he deems most important which people are not appreciating (from his view?)
Instead, a film museum with 'architecture of the future' is the way to go? How much of this is about making a positive difference in the world and how much of it is George stroking his own ego?

+Dylan Burgess What I find strange is that, whilst thats true, he did become a sell-out. Coppola said it pretty early on, and it makes sense when you look back at Jedi, or at the prequels and compare them to his previous work. Everything inches toward merchandising and business as opposed to story. He kinda just became the corporate entity he hated.
I mean his producer left before Jedi because he didnt agree with the toyetic approach, and I believe him, why else if youre gonna make so much money?
Anyway, he made the best decision in a long time by selling the company with Kathleen Kennedy at the helm. Hes no longer at fault for any problems and people who love the property get to work on it with free reign. If it works out, people will love him again too. I guess maybe the wisdom came with age. Lucas really needs to review his history...and his...logic. I think he was trying to tie Walter Benjamin's idea of art and mechanical reproduction with the invention of the printing press--claiming that these resulted in the diminishment of the narrative art form in the twentieth century??? Even though the 20th Century was arguably the novel's greatest heyday, as well as giving rise to, well, story-based cinema... Lucas loves to affect this lax intellectual tone (almost like William Buckley but without the accent), but there's no substance behind it. He speaks in vague, while grand, generalizations, knowing that nobody will ever challenge him. If you were a regular guy, spouting this tangled nonsense, people would think you were high.
