Very interesting. I discovered when trying to backup my save off a bootleg Ruby cart that it's save was actually embedded in the GBA ROM dumped from it, luckily someone over on pokemonproject already documented and wrote a small program to extract them. pkSploit's ROM rewrite feature makes me tempted to see if I could implement something similar for these carts via DS/Lite homebrew.
an easy way to extract the saves is also to just dump the rom (which will also contain the save like you said) and open in an emulator such as virtual boy advance. There you can save in the emulator and it should generate a new .sav file as normal
To install drivers, also you can go to devices and printers/manage drivers/ actions/ add legacy hardware, to not go through the disabling unsigned drivers feature

BV prints his own shells for the Gen3 Joey (which they come with standard), and I'm not sure if the Joey Jr. has a shell yet. So anything you would print would have to be designed on your own. Hope this helps!

So I've noticed that practically every video about this shows it off with GBA games. Does it work the same with GBC games? Also, on the site where you can buy it, it says "currently supports ROM dump of all GB/GBC/GBA Carts and Read/Write SRAM to all GB/GBC Carts" and I also noticed on the program under Cart Type there is GB(C) Generic. Would this mean that I can overwrite ROMs on GBC cartridges too? Do they have to be Chinese bootleg as well or can they be official Nintendo copies? (I'm sorry if I may seem troubled, but ever since I saw a certain ROM Hack recently I've wanted to play it on my gameboy color, but in the original game's cartridge not a flash cart. I will probably still get a flash cart, but I would like to know if this can do what I want it to.)
easy, get a ds with a gba cart slot such as a ds lite then get an r4 card, next add the backup app onto the r4 card and use the backup app which will give you a rom and a save file.
So Kyle I have my Joey Jr. that came in today, with 2 flashable GBA carts from him also (which came preloaded with Pokemon Sapphire and Pokemon Emerald). I was able to dump my authentic carts to my PC no problem, but when I try to drag over roms like magical vacation patched in English (or even regular roms) onto those flashable GBA carts they dont work. I'm confused as to if Joey Jr. actually can flash games onto the cart other that what was on the EEPROM originally, is this the issue? Or some user error on my part?
Hmmm, try using the Joey Gen3 software with the Jr., rather than drag and drop in Windows. I believe that should allow for reflashing ROM's. Hope this helps!
I recently got Zelda Minish Cap to run on a bootleg cart with an SRAM patch but it wont hold the save and i think thats because i need to install a battery into my bootleg cart?
Hey Kyle, are we also able to rewrite GB games like this? I want to rip my OG copy of Saga 2 and apply a patch to it to get the most legit experience for the game.
Thank you for your tutorial. At 21:51, how come you choose to read 64Mbit when the console states the ROM size to be 256Mbit? Aren't you omitting 3/4 of the data? I'm not sure the emulator test is sufficient, because a partial ROM file could be playable until the game attempts to access the part that was left out.
David Revelj Good catch! When reading GBA carts, the auto-detect feature in the Joey software is almost always wrong. That's why I encourage the trial and error approach. Also, when the emulator tries to load the game ROM file into RAM, it will be able to tell that the ROM dump is incomplete based on the signature in the header and footer of the hex file (I think that's how it works). Basically, there's a marker that says when the end of the file is. Hence why an overdump is just junk/irrelevant data; It's not even read by the emulator anyways because it believes that the end of the file has been reached.
The only carts that take up that much space are the ones that have movies on them; the vast majority of carts take up 4-16 mb of space, and only Mother 3 and Kingdom Hearts take up 32 mb. so 64 is still quite generous
I know this is an old video, but is there a cheaper alternative to the joey? I'm not ready to shell out 50 bucks for a JJ when it's price is supposed to be 25 bucks
Unfortunately, the current semiconductor/silicon shortage is jacking up prices for everything, so the Jr. is the best deal you're likely to find for now. Thanks for watching! If you have any other questions, you can reach me via www.kyleawsm.com.
My brother has bootleg Pokemon LG/FR GBA games. So I flashed my authentic game ROM to his bootlegs for him after converting to SRAM save-type, and it actually saves now without deleting his file later on at a random point. Only problem is every time the game starts up it says: "Save file is corrupt. Will load from the last point." It saves and loads flawlessly but for some reason this message always appears. Any way to get rid of this message? Its not a big deal, just annoying for resets (And not to be confused with the "dry battery, save will load" or " save file will load okay" messages). Thanks for the video!
@@bluue5756 Same with 7zip. I think it's better because with 7zip installed you can right click on a file, select 7zip... then it brings up a dialogue box for starting the decompressing.

I'm just trying to do a little research and find one of those online printing companies that will do it good and cheapish. Waiting on it to leave Australia anyway so I got time, thanks for the reply!
Do you think this would allow us to rewrite our real GBA games over reproduction carts? I doubt we could reproduction e legit carts because of the ram and memory issues... But being able to do timer events again would be great if our current carts are damaged
KyleAwsm,
How would i go about using Zadig to update my Joey Joebags Gen 3?
Hey man, i know this is a tough question but i want to make my own Pokemon Emerald homebrew with this. Is it possible? Can i buy a cheap GBA game with RTC and reprogram it to work exactly same as Emerald? Will it have RTC and Pal park(pokemon migration) etc.?
how do i get this cart reader thingy its not on ebay so how am i sumpost to get it i found this ghc game (game boy color) and i wanted to modifie it so i can play it on my gba but i need this ting so plase help. send me the link where you got yours please
Can you tell me how the ROM chip is programmed in the factory and can we use thrm like a flash drive?
Im trying to do the same thing with a GBC rom hack and it works only it won't save your game. If anyone knows a way around this let me know.
Are you sure it's not just a faulty battery on your GBC cartridge? I know that can/will cause a game not to save.
@@baseballnathan97 no I tested the battery before attempting to do this and it saved fine.
Does adding a battery and flashing to the cartridge allow it to pass the DS checks? I would like to trade from gen 3 to 4
easy, get a ds with a gba cart slot such as a ds lite then get an r4 card, next add the backup app onto the r4 card and use the backup app which will give you a rom and a save file.
U sure u arent canadian? U r real nice. New sub!
Thank you so much Kyle!!
W0LKO You are most welcome! :) Thanks for watching!
After flashing an original ROM of the game, will this make your GBA read bootleg cartridges as an original cartridge?
may i ask when the tutorial for reading/writing savefiles is comming?
This
I know this is an old video, but is there a cheaper alternative to the joey?
7zip also works with .rar files
I would personally use winrar as it even allows 7z and basically every file type
@@bluue5756 So does 7zip lol
@@bluue5756 Same with 7zip. I think it's better because with 7zip installed you can right click on a file, select 7zip... then it brings up a dialogue box for starting the decompressing.
Daniel Le Coz same with WinRAR guess both programs are the same!
@@32BitLink Neat, I didn't know that. But I'll still be using 7zip because it can be installed using ninite
this guy young. you can get nes ems too
This is great! Would be cool to buy import games and flash english translations onto!
Dumb question, can you rewrite a bootleg Pokemon Ruby with an authentic copy of Pokémon Ruby, or will it not work?
your video is great, I like it a lot so it is possible to rewrite another game boy color game on an original game boy colors cartridge? thank you for your answer and your video.
Is it possible to reprogram a Pokémon bootleg cartridge to be recognized by Pal Park in Pokémon Platinum?
PS. Loved your video and if the joey can solve the issue of my question then I'll buy one
I'm trying to make a reproduction cartridge of Shantae using a donor GBC cartridge and a reproduction label. Any suggestions?
hi kyle is there anyway you can make me a cartridge and if not can you forward me where to get such service I want final fire pro wrestling for gba its a japan version of fire pro wrestling 2 on gba the reason I want the custom pathed version is because it provides a gm mode that the us version lacks I have the website from where to get the game if you can help me letme know
Is there a way to to super nintendo. I would love to play killer instincts on my gba sp.
Can I remove japan version from oryginal cartridge and install form pc English version? Like Pokemon Crystal Japan swap to English ver?
This is so cool. But I thought this was going to be about making your own Gameboy color and Gameboy advance games on your Computer making them into a workable rom file. And putting them on a physical cartridge you can put into you Gameboy. This is still cool though. However. The alternative is even better. Do you know if there is a way to do this?
Check out my friend GamingMonsters on here - He made some tutorial videos about programming custom Gameboy games in C. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching, and cheers! 😎👍🏻
i bought a few gameboy and gbc pokemon games. they came on what looks like gba boards. although they are back ROM flashes so red and yellow dnt save. crystal uses the battery for saving and silver saves without a battery.
do you know if anyone is offering a service to reflash my obvious bootlegs? or do i have to fork out $75+ AUD just to get these to work.
if so might aswell get a flash cart instead.
Also if your not too bothered like me....just turn auto updates off and only update if you really need to. I have a old laptop that I'm not bothered about updating so you don't need to re install
